which is better? canon EOS 1000D digital SLR camera or 500D?

my friend has the 1000D, but today another friend told me that the 500D is good. i need one with a fast shutter speed, because i mainly take action shots.

If it is action shots you are after then I would avoid any of the amateur 'Rebel' series of Canon bodies. For the price of the 500D you can buy a Canon 40D. I use one myself and after upgrading from a 350D (which I loved) I could never go back to the Rebel series.

The 40D has a very fast frame rate (6.5f/s), better AF system, faster AF system, much better build quality (magnesium alloy body and larger grip), larger and brighter pentaprism viewfinder compared to the tiny dark pentamirror viewfinders in the 1000D/500D bodies, higher ISO settings, faster shutter speeds, twice the battery life, etc etc...

I could go on, but I am sure you get the idea. Forget the entry level amateur bodies, if it is speed you are after then there is no doubt that you are better off with a semi-pro 40D. And if you are looking at a 500D (I would seriously not bother with this camera) then you can certainly afford a 40D.

Go into a store, handle them all and you will see exactly what I mean.

So you have a choice.. a plastic bodied, slower amateur entry level body with a small viewfinder and less spec. Or a far better Semi pro model with far better specs and built for speed (this body was made for action shots)

I will leave the choice up to you, it seems obvious to me, hell I would rather have a 20D than a 500D, just for the ergonomics and large viewfinder alone.

Hi, I recently bought the following camera :Canon IXUS 117 HS Digital Camera in Black - Exclusive to Jessops

And I am now rtying to find a suitable case. any sugeestions would be good, I have seen the following on amazon but just don't know which one would fit best & really don't want to waste time & money by ordering the wrong one again & again.

The best thing to do is take the camera into your local camera shop and see what they have that fits it properly.

The 117HS (according to Jessops) is 93.1mm x 55.8mm x 19.9mm (3.67"x2.2"x0.78"), you could compare those dimensions to some of the other cameras that you listed to see if they are comparable.
