Answer
If youâre looking for a point & shoot, user friendly digital camera, I have to say, I like Canon. Nothing against other the other brands. I prefer Canon based on personal experience and their reputation.

Consider the Canon PowerShot models, the A630 or the A640. These compact models have helpful pre-set shooting modes that you choose for the particular picture situation you are about to shoot. Like: auto(matic), portrait, nighttime, landscape, indoor, snow, beach, kids & pets (subjects that wonât keep still), and more⦠You can also be creative with these models, where you can choose special FX settings as you are shooting a pictures and have the option to program/set your own manual setting, so check the specifications. You should bear in mind, with physical size of the camera, (subcompact/slim/flat vs. compact), you compromise features that are available on the compact/slightly larger models.

I own the Canon PowerShot A620. My favorite feature of this model is the vari-angle (flip and twist) display/LCD screen. It protects the screen when not in use, and helpful for odd angle shots. Especially if you want to take a picture of yourself, or yourself with others. Picture taking is instant! I have found lag time is not an issue, with this camera, compared to my first digital camera. They now have an updated version of my A620⦠the above mentioned A630 and A640. Here is a review and its features (keep scrolling to see the vari-angle screen), up close and personal:
http://www.dcresource.com/reviews/canon/powershot_a630_a640-review/index.shtml

Here is where I go to shop on-line for the best price for digital cameras. (Which I found to have considerable better prices than going locally to your nearest digital camera dealer). Just type in your camera model in the âsearch keywordâ: http://lowpricedigital.com/category.asp?master_category_Id=1000 Buy soon or check daily, for prices changes daily amongst merchants. Also check if the camera is being sold ânewâ or ârefurbishedâ.

If youâd rather buy from the store, check the usual places, Best Buy, Circuit City, Wal-Mart, Target, and camera stores. Even consider Office Max, Office Depot, CostCo/Samâs Club---any store with a camera department.

I hope you have better luck this time!

What is the difference between these Canon PowerShot digital cameras?

chardonnay

I want a new digital camera, and Canon PowerShot was recommended to me. It's for casual, vacation picture use.

What's the difference between the Canon PowerShot SD1200-IS and the Canon PowerShot A1100-IS. The latter is cheaper, but will it be lower quality?

Answer
Canon PowerShot A1100is does not come with low quality. The difference is A1100 use AA batteries make it bulky

Good digital cameras?? Canon sd600?

autumn

I'm looking to buy a new digital camera and would like to stick around the $200-275 range. I've heard great things about the Canon SD600 and was wondering if anyone was familiar with this one??

What other digital cameras out there are nice? I'd like something relatively small, with a larger screen on the back....just something that takes good quality pics. Any suggestions?

Answer
Canon's SD models are an excellent choice if you want an ultra compact camera, with great image quality & features.
The SD600 was a very popular model in it's time.

However, I would recommend Canon's newer SD model (SD1000), which is available in your price range. It has the newer & faster Digic III processor (including face detection) and a better battery life than the SD600.

SD1000...7.1MP, 2.5" LCD, with viewfinder
It has a battery life of approx. 210 shots...The SD600, 160 shots.

You would also have to buy an SD card (1-2GB recommended). Look as Sandisk Ultra II or Extreme III as a fast and reliable brand with a lifetime warranty.

good luck...

Canon 30d?

sekp1987

I was originally going for a 40d body ($1200-body only! ouchies). Then I thought nikon d80. ($800-900 body only) THEN I thought XTI. It's a lot cheaper and good for beginners. But now I think a 30d might be a good idea. It's been on the market for a few years thus, former beginners are wanting to upgrade and sell.

Anyway, I heard that when you're not a super pro photographer, megapixels only mean so much. (30d has 8mp vs the usual 10-12+mp of entry level dslrs). I figure I'd try to get a less new camera so I can get a good lens or two or three. I've read the xti vs 30d vs 40d vs etc etc stuff so I'm pretty comfortable with the knowledge I have.

The going used price is $600ish via craigslist/good winning bid on ebay.

The going refurbished/open box/etc camera is about $700 or so.

So do you think it's a good idea to buy a 30d at about those prices? Or maybe you know of where I can get a better deal.

OR, if you have any suggestions at all or comments/wisdom, that's cool 2
I mean, just because it's old and not being made any more doesnt mean it's not good. Right? That's what I've been told anyway.

hey, that is the link to the canon eos 30d, they have " new " ones there, they aren't used or refurbished.

i would say that the canon eos 30d is a good camera, it has 8 megapixels which is good, it has a big screen which is convinient for displaying your work, it looks and feels more pro, that the canon xti. i would say that the 30d, has much more features, and would be better in the long term

when you buy something off of ebay, be careful some of that crap they sell is so cheap because smtn is wrong with it lol, but i wouldn't say that in all cases though.

hope i helped

Digital camera recommendations?

channigan3

I've never had a "real" camera (just the disposable ones), and my fiance and I will be married this June. We wanted to buy a good digital camera to take on the honeymoon. We aren't photographers, but we'd like a good camera for some nice photos. Can you give advice regarding the best one to buy with the best price (or refund/rebate, etc.)? Thanks!

Answer
If youâre looking for a point & shoot, user friendly digital camera, I have to say, I like Canon. Nothing against other the other brands. I prefer Canon based on personal experience and their reputation. They have an awesome line of cameras that can fit any kind of budget and offers different features depending on type of photography usage.

My advice for those shopping for a point & shoot digital camera, you may want to consider the following: 1) 5 mp this is best for most users. 2) OPTICAL zoom with at least 4X. (Digital zoom shouldnât be high priority in a digital camera). 3) camera ought to have an viewfinder. Some models are doing away with the viewfinder. It is very helpful to have, when the subject is difficult to see in the LCD/display screen on a very bright day, or to conserve battery life. (Continuous screen use, suck up battery life). 4) Uses AA regular or rechargeable batteries. Some models have specialized lithium ion batteries, where you charge it while in the camera. With AA, you can always pick up a spare if you find yourself caught with low batteries and are not able to charge the camera/lithium ion battery quickly. 5)And a PLUS, can take video/movie mode. (Which most do!)

Canon has an awesome line that can fit the bill. Consider the PowerShot models, the A630 (8mp; 4x optical zoom) or the A640 (10 mp; 4x optical zoom). These models have helpful pre-set shooting modes that you choose for the particular picture situation you are about to shoot. Like: auto(matic), portrait, nighttime, landscape, indoor, snow, beach, kids & pets (subjects that wonât keep still), and more⦠You can also be creative with some of the models, where you can choose special FX settings as you are shooting a pictures. Which camera do you recommend? the Canon 5d Mark II or Nikon D700?

David Jane

thanks James for that in depth comment. It certainly does fit in my budget,& thats why im considering it. the d700 is the 1 im aiming for, but its more expensive.i like the AF points on the d700, the faster FPS,apparently better performance in low light, better build quality etc.i also consider the prices of lenses. in my opinion, canon lenses are cheaper, &if im going to collect them, lets just say, i can have 5 lenses for the price of 3 nikon lenses. currently i have a dx format nikon d60 with kit lens and tripod. so im still amateurish, but i can definitely say either camera will be a major step up. the only thing that is a stumbling block for me is if im to outlay so much money, i want quality. so, thanks to ur meaningful comment, im leaning even more to the canon based on best quality for the buck. ill have to sacrifice some nice features of the d700 for the money but i think on my skill level, i wont notice that much of a difference. of course,i can always buy the d700 later.

Answer
Canon EOS 5D Mark II 21.1MP Full Frame CMOS Digital SLR Camera
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001G5ZTLS?ie=UTF8&tag=0610-20

Review: Pros:

Crazy high ISO performance
Fantastic amazing image quality you have to see to believe!
Great menus, sharper, brighter, easier to read then 40D
Video, did someone say video? I love it! You will need a tripod!
Fantastic rear LCD that you can check actual photo sharpness
Super low light high ISO photographic tool with 25,600 ISO!!!
Feels great in your hands, the grip texture is easy to hold and is well balanced
Low 50 ISO allows photos at F/1.2 aperture out in bright sunlight for shallow DOF

Cons:
No Built in popup Flash
A little slower shooting then the 40D
Very demanding of lenses, high end L lenses are a must have
Huge files: you will need larger memory cards and a larger hard drive
Ultra large bright sharp viewfinder makes my 40D finder seem dim and tiny
Hum... I'm thinking..

This was my first full frame camera. Prior to it I had owned and operated a 40D, 30D and Rebel XTi. I am a wedding and sports photographer primarily, so I have been able to test the 5D Mark II out under both of these conditions.

For basketball I used it with AI Servo, Center Point focus, but went into custom settings and enabled the AF assist dots. It worked like a dream, focusing faster and more accurately than my 40D ever had. While no, the FPS aren't ideal for sports, if you can lock on focus like this from the start, you can still achieve amazing sports photographs. Plus the fact that I was able to shoot at ISO 4,000 and not have noticeable noise was just incredible. The shots auto-white balanced correctly too which normally in the arena I shoot at is not what happens on my 40D.

My first wedding all I could say all day was wow. I was getting available light photographs I never would have dreamed of before. The new screen also made it incredibly easy to determine if something was in focus or not. When I would switch between my 40D and 5D2 I found out just how spoiled that screen had made me, since the 40D screen looked terrible to me now when previously I thought that had a great screen. I sure was wrong! 920,000 pixels is definitely the way to go on this LCD. I primarily shot with center point (one shot) for my focus and it nailed focus every time. I did a mix up of manual, aperture priority and some program (Program mostly for the formals)

What else do I love about it? The 98% view finder is awesome. I like being able to use UDMA cards in it...

Video! Although I'm not a video / motion person by nature, I prefer stills, I've been testing out the video quite a bit. At Christmas I took a few short clips of my nephew and was really happy with how they look. It's very neat to be able to take high definition video of a little kid and have that awesome affect of a wide aperture blurring out the background. The only downside is that the files are huge. My 1 minute clip was over 300MB, but that's what I get for shooting in 1080!

The batteries this camera use really do hold a charge for a while. I used mine with the battery grip at the wedding, and the two batteries after going for over 500 shots (maybe close to 600 shots that day?) still had about 72% charge each left on them. I could easily have shot 3 times that much and still have had left over charge on the batteries. Also the new battery info screen is really nifty since you can see what serial number battery has what charge, making it a lot easier to keep track of.

So far I've used a 35 1.4/L, 135 2/L, 70-200 f2.8/L, 50 1.4, and 100 2.8 Macro on this camera body and all have performed wonderfully. I don't miss the pop up flash that my 40D has since I never used it anyway, I always throw my 580 EX II on top when I need flash.

This camera really is a gem and I highly recommend it if it fits in your budget!

I've got a Canon EOS 5D digital camera. What kind of lens?

yueyeyoona

My husband has this camera and he is always saying he wants a new lens for it. I want to get it for Xmas but I don't know ANYTHING about cameras. He wants a lens that can zoom far and do close ups, because his doesn't. What kind should I get? I think the brand on the lens he has now is "TAMRON"?

Also, if anyone knows a good camera shop or place I can get one in Los Angeles.

Thanks!!

Answer
I sure hope hes not using a Tamron on a 5D, that would pretty much destroy any image quality the camera had to offer. The thing about a nice full frame camera like that is that they bring out every defect in a lens and so require either Canon L series lenses or some of the good EF mount single focal length (prime) lenses to really shine. Within that selection I dont think there is a really a good do it all sort of lens that zooms really far and does macro. Does he only have one lens right now? My suggestion if he wants a really far zoom lens thats going to be the proper quality and good for wildlife and such is the EF 100-400 f/4.5-5.6 IS USM L lens made by Canon. This lens does cost around $1100 but thats the least you will want to spend on a zoom lens for a full frame. You could go for the 70-200 f/2.8 USM which is way better in low light for things like concerts, but does not zoom nearly as far, 200mm vs 400mm. You will have to decide which would be best for him. For macro lenses there are two choices: EF 100mm f/2.8 USM macro and the EF 180mm f/3.5 USM L macro lens. If you have the money for the 180mm lens great, if not the 100mm lens is fantastic and many photographers swear by both for macro and portraits. I own that lens and can attest to its sharpness and good image and build quality. The 100mm f/2.8 lens costs around $450 or so. Unfortunately expensive cameras require expensive lenses, and you are going to have to pick between a zoom and a macro. There is no good quality zoom lens that happens also to be good for macro. You could look into extension tubes, but thats a whole other question.

What Canon compact digital camera should I buy -- either A4000 or A2600?

Q. Which should I buy? ...it is between the Canon A4000 IS or A2600?

Technical Benefit Differences of A4000 IS the A2600 lacks I see:
1. More zoom range (8x vs.5x)
2. Optical Image Stabilization/Intelligent Image Stabilization
3. Better Macro Capability (1 cm vs. 3 cm)

Technical Benefit Differences of A2600 the A4000 lacks I see:
1. Longer Battery Life (ECO Mode -- up to 30% more pictures per battery charge)
2. Wider Aperture (f/2.8 vs. f/3.0)
3. Lower Light Exposure Sensitivity in Low Light Mode only (ISO 6400 vs. ISO 1600)
4. Digital Image Stabilization -- Yes, an added feature the A4000 lacks; but greatly inferior to Optical Image Stabilization/Intelligent Image Stabilization

The physical size, dimensions, and weight differences, are very minor to me; both relatively small. Other than these differences above, they are technically the same compact camera. The A2600 is this years (2013) new Canon compact model release -- highest model of the newest of the A-series. The A4000 IS is last years (2012) Canon compact model release -- overall highest still for this years A-series lineup.

This is just an opinion question, but if you could justify your answers as to why YOU would pick one over the other with reason, that would be great! I am stumped. I am torn between these two. Thanks!
Let me add...

If you ask what kind of pictures I generally take, I take all kinds like landscapes, portraits, close-ups, night scenes, action, etc.. Yes, a general use camera.

Answer
No need to enumerate what you shoot. It is expected for all cameras to do them all anyway.

Judging from those spec differences, I'd go for the A2600. Battery life would be a huge issue and it would be nice to see Canon actually address the shortness of it once and for all. Wider apertures allow for longer shooting pleasure after the sun has gone down. It also helps blur backgrounds more easily for closeup portraits.

Although I personally avoid going higher than ISO 1600, it's good to know there's more in case I really need it. Image stabilization would be great though for making razor sharp shots but it's not really that important as I am confident my hands can still hold on steadily.

Atrophotography which camera to use?

Q. I have a orion xx12 telescope and i am not really ready for the photography side of astronomy yet BUT my grandfather is absolutely set on buying me a camera for my scope so i have agreed to getting 1 but which kind is better a digital or a film camera and also which make is the best for this job
In the catalog i got with the telescope has a bracket that is for the orion xx12 anyway i should really ask this question in about 5 years time because i only had the scope for 2 months or so and i (would rather have a shed for my scope) just need a camera for now really because my granddad is bugging me that i should be able to photograph the likes of saturn and such so just to experiment with what could i get for 250pounds that would be a good starter.

Answer
First off, the XX12 is not suitable for astrophotography. You need a telescope that can be polar aligned and tracks. The XX12 does neither, since it is a altitude-azimuth mount, instead of a equatorial type mount and has no drive motors.

You'll be wanting something more like this -

You can use a web camera for doing simple lunar and planetary work. Then you can capture a few seconds worth of video and then stack the frames up to get a picture.
http://www.telescope.com/Astrophotography/Astrophotography-Cameras/Orion-StarShoot-Solar-System-Color-Imaging-Camera-IV/pc/-1/c/4/sc/58/p/52175.uts

For alt-az and deep space work, you can only expect to get no more than 30 seconds of shutter time before image rotation sets in -
http://calgary.rasc.ca/field_rotation.htm
http://www.astronomyasylum.com/telescopemountstutorial.html

But if you want to look at cameras, you need to figure out a couple things -

Do you want to use an off shelf DSLR camera? That you can use during the day as well as night?

Or, a dedicated camera that is for astrophography only? And do you want the camera to do color or monochrome?

A DSLR is a a nice choice for starting out, since you can dual purpose it. The problems with it are that you need to be able to control the shutter for minutes (most only go to 30 seconds) and it needs to have low electronic noise. The preferred DSLR's to use are from Canon. A dedicated DSLR for astrophotography is Canon's 60Da (about $1660), but they do make other cameras that are cheaper.
http://www.engadget.com/2012/04/03/canon-eos-60da-dslr-astronomy-night-shooting-price-release-date/

They have a wide amount of support from 3rd party vendors for camera and shutter control. One of the easiest to use is Nebulosity -
http://www.stark-labs.com/nebulosity.html

For a dedicated astro camera, they come to two flavors, color and monochrome. Color is the easiest, since it does it all in one shot. But is suffers in resolution - the amount of detail the camera can see. Since one 1/3rd of the ccd element is covered by either a red, green or blue filter (your eye works along the same lines).

Monochrome cameras have better resolution, but you need to take images in red, green and blue filters and then combine them for color. Which can be very time consuming and has a high learning curve for getting it right.

What will the best camera for me under Rs.10000 ($200)???

Answer
Your best digital camera purchase (under Rs.1000/$200) will be the best point-and-shoot camera you can find selling for about $189-$199. Here's how: Go to a large electronics store in your area that sells many brands of digital cameras. Tell the sales person that you want to buy the best digital camera that sells FOR NO MORE than Rs.1000/$200. Tell the sales person that you are most interested in digital cameras made by Nikon or Canon, maybe Sony, maybe Olympus - but that you're mostly interested in cameras made by Nikon or Canon. Tell the sales person that you want a camera that has about 12 mega pixels (mp), but NO LESS than 10 mega pixels.

The sales person will show you all the cameras in your price range. Ask the sales person to explain which cameras are the best in your price range AND WHY. The reason you must keep repeating the price is because the sales person will try to get you to buy a more expensive camera. If this is your first digital camera (yes/no?), you DO NOT want to buy an expensive camera; buying a more expensive camera comes later when you're certain that "art photography" is really something you want to do. Right now, you want the best point-and-shoot your money can buy.

Extra things you will need to buy: a good-sized memory card (2GB or more) for the camera. Most memory cards that come _with_ the camera are much too small for serious photographers. Next, a sturdy leather holster that _securely_ holds the camera on your belt (if you're a man) or fixes somehow to your purse strap (if you're a woman). You DO NOT want to carry your camera in a pocket. You DO NOT want to carry your camera in your purse. But, if you seriously want to learn photography as an art, you DO want to carry your new camera with you ALL THE TIME. The camera holster and memory card will cost you another $30 to $40.

FINALLY: It's nice to have a digital camera to take pictures. But, if you want to become a serious photographer, you will soon learn that you DON'T "take pictures" because a serious photographer "MAKES IMAGES." Learning the difference between "taking pictures" and "Making images" takes time, study, and effort. A good photographer's best piece of photographic equipment is inside his head, not in his hands.

Which camera is better for what I need?

Answer
When picking a P&S camera, the most important factor to consider is the optical zoom range. This is something you will have to live with until you buy your next one.

The Canon has a 10x optical zoom and the Nikon only a 4x. As you may surmise the Canon will give you a lot more in the way of options when shooting your child or anyone else or anything else.

What criteria are you using to choose the camera? Price? Pixel count? Something else?

What you may want to do is compare cameras with similar optical zoom ranges and then look at what they cost and which features they each have.

What is the best Camera to get that cost $100or less?

Which Camera? canon 50d, or XSI?

Trell W

Okay.

i can get a Canon Rebel XSI but i know eventually i will out grow this camera, and purchase a more expensive camera but i was wondering if i should buy the Rebel XSI NOW? or just wait, and buy the Canon 50D, i am a beginner, so any help would be appreciated.

Canon 50D problems... From camera to computer?

Amanda H

I am a new owner of a Canon 50D and am experiencing some issues with it. My fiance's sisterinlaw did something with my settings, and I know she set it to RAW mode (the extension on my images is .CR2) but here is my issue:

On my camera, the images I take look extremely sharp and vibrant, but when I transfer them to my computer, they are dull and dark and full of noise. I am viewing the images in the regular Windows Photo viewer but have also tried Google Picasa and the same thing happens. (for example, I went to my fiance's firehouse yesterday and took some pictures of the fire engines and the red color looked rich and vibrant on my camera, but then transferred to my computer, the images were dark and dull and had a LOT of noise.)

Any help would be GREATLY appreciated, I am really disappointed that these fire dept images did not turn out the way I had hoped!!!

Answer
The reason the RAW files don't look quite as bright and vibrant is because RAW files are unprocessed. It is also possible the camera was set to Neutral or Faithful in the picture styles menu which truly will make images look flat and full.

While I too once used Google Picasa to process my RAW files, I stopped because I just didn't like the way it handled images. The last version I used, had a weird habit of making it's own edits without any input from me which drove me nuts.

All of this aside, if you want your images to come out just as they did when the camera was set to JPEG, use the software that came with your camera (Digital Photo Professional). That software can read the Picture Style settings in your camera and produce JPG images identical to those that would come straight from the camera.

DPP is included for free with all Canon DSLRs. The current version is version 3.8 (PC) or 3.8.1 ((Mac). However, your 50D probably came with an earlier version but, it works the same way. The interface hasn't changed much in three years. I own both a 40D and a 7D so I've seen several different versions. You'll find documentation for the software included on the CD that came with your camera or you can download it by going to the support/downloads page for your camera at http://www.canoneos.com.

For what it's worth, I know quite a few professionals who use DPP for all their RAW image processing before editing photos in Photoshop. I am not a pro but, I use DPP anytime I need to process a large batch of RAW images for the web. I like it because the workflow for that process in DPP is much simpler than using Adobe Photoshop CS4. That said, I still use Photoshop when an image is special and I plan to produce a large print.

Please no hate comments

Answer
Hey,

Canon and Nikon are the best. Don't be too -which brand- person, because it depends on the specific camera model mostly.

For your first time, 1000$ and below is a good limit. I recommend Canon EOS XSi, T1i, T2i and Nikon D3100, D5000 and D90.

Out of those, I'd get the T2i or D3100.

Answer
Your photos look like they came from a point and shoot camera because you are using auto settings...like a point and shoot camera.

Buying a more expensive camera or more lenses does not give you better photos. Using a camera better gives you better photos. You need to learn how to use your DSLR like a DSLR...on full manual mode.

The most important accessory for a person moving from a point and shoot to a DSLR is a good book that explains how to use ISO, aperture, and shutter speed in manual mode. All advanced amateurs and professionals use their DSLR cameras in full manual mode as it gives them the ultimate creative control over their photos. A book that many people recommend is called "Understanding Exposure." This book is cheap, short, and easy to read. Please learn how to use your DSLR in manual mode. Otherwise you are no better than those other fools who spend hundreds or thousands on a DSLR and then use it like a $50 point and shoot. If you use ANY camera on auto mode like a point and shoot, your photos will always look like they came from a point and shoot.

Finally, to get better at photoshop, you have two choices: Read a bunch of books and experiment, or take some classes. It is a VERY complicated program, and no one is going to sit here and give you lessons.

digital camera?

Q. im going to buy a digital camera and ive never bought one... i dont know what kind to get. i would like for it to be under 150.
Or tell me what cameras not to buy.

also can you tell me what kind you have and do you like it?

Answer
Avoid off-brand cheap cameras like Fujifilm. Instead, stick with Nikon, Canon, Sony, or Kodak. Even it you pay a bit more, you'll have a camera you can use for years.

Consumer Reports recommends this camera for under $150:
Kodak EasyShare M853 - $120

Here's why you'd like it so much:
8.2 megapixels resolution
included battery pack good for 300 photos before recharging
3x optical zoom
digital image stabilization
uses the popular SD memory card for storing pictures
most popular JPEG file format for still pictures
video mode for short video recordings

This kind of resolution, unheard of a few years ago in a camera this price, is so good you could get clear prints up to 30 by 40 inches from it. Some people prefer cameras that use AA batteries, but in the long run a rechargeable battery pack is cheaper.

Resist the urge to zoom in closer when taking pictures by using the digital zoom. Most point and shoot cameras have optical zoom (what the lens is doing for you) and digital zoom (what the software is doing for you). You can enlarge the picture later if you like, and the resolution will still be good.

What is your opinion on Canon digital cameras?

money

I bought a Canon digital camera 4 years ago and it broke down 1 month ago. to repair it will cost me $200. is it normal?

Answer
Canon is a good company, but nothing lasts forever, you have to realize it. If you cherish your camera you can repair it but better get another one, I would advise another Canon as you already have the software and the gadget for it.

Can I use my Canon Power Shot SD1200IS digital camera as a webcam without downloading software?

I was just wondering, and if I do need software.. what do I download?

Answer
Can this camera be used as a webcam?

The quick answer to this VERY common question is "No".

The more detailed answer is this: yes, sometimes it is possible, but it just isn't a good solution!
You would need to have the right camera, cable, software and drivers.
Then you need to set it all up to work, which can be a big pain.
Even if you DO get it working, you are now causing wear and tear on what might be a fairly/very expensive camera.
Webcams start at about $20.oo. They do the job well, they are usually easy to set up, and they can STAY set up - you won't want to quickly grab your webcam on the way out the door, only so you have to start setting up all over again next time you want to use it.

Check out the websites of Logitech, Creative, and Microsoft.
All make good webcams.
Check the features carefully if you want to have those fancy video effects, because not every cam supports them.
Figure out which models you like, then google for the best price.

If you are still determined to use your still camera, then read your manual - if it is possible, it would be a good selling point, so the manual will tell you how to do it.

If you did a quick search here on YA, you would find MANY instant answers to this. http://answers.yahoo.com/search/search_result;_ylt=AmaFlWzXh9x2Nk8d3RJ4v0C0xQt.;_ylv=3?p=camera+as+web+cam

I am looking for a digital camera for travel.?

jennibean

I am going to be doing a lot of traveling this year and I want a good digital camera that has a good zoom and is great for taking pictures. Everything from landscapes in Ireland and Scotland, to architect in Germany, to beautiful pictures in the Caribbean. I am just starting out so I don't want anything crazy expensive. I was hoping to stay around $300-$350. I had been looking at the Canon PowerShot SX30. Any ideas or suggestions would be great.

Answer
the fog in ireland and scotland. the spring rain in germany, the sand and salt air of the caribbean, plus the banging around of all that travel.
four simple words - waterproof, shockproof, dust proof and freeze proof.
drop the camera once or get moisture in it and picture taking is done (i know from experience)
not trying to scare you, ok i am. just don't want to see you take a great trip and have nothing to show for it.
Canon D10 or the Panasonic Lumix TS3, they take nice pictures and you don't have to look out the window to see what the weather is like or wrap your camera in 6 layers of towels to keep the sand out.
the D10 has 640x320 video and 3x zoom, @ $250
the TS3 has 1080 HD video. 6x zoom and 3D picture capability but its pricey. @ $400
i have a TS2 and i love it. 720 HD video, 6x zoom. great pictures @ $260
this is just my personal opinion but if i was taking this trip i would spend the few extra bucks and get the Panasonic Lumix TS3. the rest of the waterproof cameras use digital image stabilization (higher iso) and creates noise (snowstorm). pretty sure Canon and Panasonic are the only 2 that have optical image stabilization to reduce noise.

Canon Powershot or Sony Cybershot digital camera?

Kim32

I'm trying to decide between two digital cameras: the Canon Powershot SD1200 IS (about $230) and the Sony Cybershot DSC-T90/P (about $300). I mainly just want a camera to bring out with friends, take basic shots when I travel, etc. but I also need a great macro setting for photographing jewelry I sell online.

Is it worth the extra $70 to get that fabulous touch screen and extra megapixels, or is the Canon more than enough? Thanks!

Answer
Hi there,

Firstly I will just let you know that I am a major fan of both these brands.

Canon are market leaders and the Powershot SD1200IS is one of my favorite cameras. They come in a great range of fashionable colors, so if you are going to be using it when going out with friends you can be sure to impress with it.

The photo quality is very good also and for photographing items it would more than likely get the job done for you considering you had the lighting etc correct.

Sony also make very good cameras but between the two brands there is not much difference I would say. If anything with Sony you are just paying a premium for the brand name, however to some people that have trust in a brand like Sony they may be prepared to pay that bit extra.

Also not sure where you have seen these prices? I have seen these models cheaper elsewhere online.

Hope this has helped, all the best with your new camera.

How can i get good Quality Image from Canon A590 IS digital camera?

Gobinath P

Hi all...
Last month I brought one New Canon AS590 IS Dig cam. But still I am getting poor quality image only. Then I donât know the proper setting also. Please any one give the right setting for Good Image. Please.

Answer
First try it on Auto or green mode. Take it around with you on a walk and take lots of shots. Keep it at one focal length (zoom setting). Composition and holding the camera still is the most important thing to learn.

Read the manual to see how to use it in dim light, night or other situations like action shots, close ups and tough lighting situations (snow, night, aquarium).

whats the best point and shoot digital camera ONLY BASED on IMAGE QUALITY? Nothing else matters.?

id like to buy a point and shoot camera that can offer the best picture quality (sharp pictures). I dont care about ANY other features

Answer
The absolute best, most-detailed reviews of digital cameras are on http://www.dpreview.com.

You can get access to all of the reviews, by rating, at this link:
http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/default.asp?view=rating

The higest rating is "Highly Recommended." Cameras that have received this rating in 2007 and 2008, that are point-and-shoot (NOT digital SLRs):

Canon PowerShot A720 IS (1/9/2008)
Fujifilm FinePix F50fd (12/5/2007)
Canon PowerShot G9 (10/26/2007)
Canon PowerShot A570 IS (10/22/2007)
Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ8 (2/7/2007)

I was actually surprised to look at this list. I did not expect a Fuji to appear, and I did not expect there to be no Nikons among the top. I note, however, that Canon has three models on the list, which is not a surprise.

Follow the link above, and you can click right through to the detailed review, including standard sample images.

3x optical zoom
digital image stabilization

i am looking to update my digital camera. i want one that has a Carl Zeiss lens, under $300-$350 of price and is 8 megapixels and up. one of my choices is the Sony Cyber Shot DSC-T200, 8.1 megapixels..it has the touch screen LCD and such. i was wondering if anyone else knows what cameras maybe by Canon could offer the Carl Zeiss lens for a digital camera. also suggestions about camera models are accepted as i am confused on what to get and when.

Answer
You might want to drop the Carl Zeiss requirement as you'll most likely end-up with a Sony digital camera, which, like what the other answerer said, costs a lot more.

Canon, Panasonic, and Casio are very good and dependable digicam models. Panasonic, from the Nov 2007 issue of Consumer Reports magazine, makes the least repair-prone cameras. And they also offer Leica lenses with wide angle of 28mm.

Canon is a good camera maker per se, be it SLRs, or point-and-shoot, you can't go wrong when them. Casio cameras have innovative features like voice recorder, photo-id/passport photo maker, document maker, etc. All these brands use the more popular (and much less expensive) SD cards.

Other manufacturers like Nikon, Olympus, Fuji, Pentax, Samsung, etc, have shortcomings either in picture quality/features, or media (e.g., xD cards). Nikon's compacts are not rated as high as their SLRs.

Also, please note that, unless you print large photos all the time, the megapixels really do not matter. 7MP should be decent enough for occasional blow-ups. You might also want to take into account that more large photos in your computer's hard disk means more space requirement.

Sony's touch screen feature is nice but will probably leave you with a screen full of finger marks all the time. So you have to make sure you bring along a wiping cloth so you can see the screen during bright daylight.

Bottomline, try out the other brands before commiting to a Sony.

Also check websites like dpreview.com for more info on the latest.

Answer
People so often ask: "Which one is a good camera to buy?"
Here is my 10 cents on the subject:

Point & Shoot cameras are wonderfully handy because of their small size.
When light conditions are ideal, they even take really nice photos - all of them do.

However, they all DO have limitations - they don't do very well in low light situations (i.e. noisy photos, hard to avoid blur, etc). The little onboard flash is very harsh at close range, and doesn't reach very far.
Many of them have no manual functions, so you are limited to only very basic photos, you can't compensate for unusual situations, or do many fun "tricks" and special effects.
P&S's also suffer from frustrating shutterlag and many of them chew through batteries rather quickly.

However, if you're ok with all those limitations, then go ahead and pick one, most of them (the same type and same price range) are rather similar. Personally I would pick either a Canon or a Nikon, and would certainly stay away from Kodak.

A higher end P&S will give you more manual options and better quality. Many of those even give you the option of adding a proper flash (which makes a big difference to your flash photos).

Don't worry too much about megapixelsâ¦. there is a limit to how many pixels you can squash into a tiny P&S sensor before you actually LOSE quality rather than gain it.
Don't worry about digital zoom, in fact, don't EVER use it. It simply crops away pixels, i.e. destroys information. The only real zoom is optical.

Decide which features are important to you, and look for cameras that have that feature.
Then go compare a few models on www.dpreview.com .

The very best thing you can do for your success is to borrow some books and learn about photography. A bit of knowledge will make a much bigger difference to your photos than your choice of P&S camera can.

For what it's worth - if I was in the market for a P&S camera right now, my choice would be a Canon Powershot SX10 IS http://www.usa.canon.com/consumer/controller?act=ModelInfoAct&fcategoryid=144&modelid=17630

P.S. forget about your rule #5 - no camera can handle being shaken without blurring the photo.

Consumer Reports for November 2006 has ranked the Canon Powershot A620 as the best compact digital camera. It is becoming almost a legend for longevity at the top of various consumer lists. It looks like this model has been replaced by the A630, which I would expect to be just as popular. The A640 appears quite similar and shares the "600" series numbering, so I guess it's just another upgraded version of the now-classic A620. It looks pretty much the same except for baing a 10 MP camera. The continuous drive is a little slower, but the files are larger, so that's no surprise. I own a few Nikon DSLR's and I'd buy the Canon A630 or A640 for myself.

With this camera, you will find the memory card is a cute little token of thanks from Canon, but not much more. Buy a 1 GB Sandisk Ultra II or Extreme III card. You will NEED the increased capacity and write speed to fully realize the benefits of your camera.

If you want to trim the budget a little, the Canon Powershot A430, A530 or A540, are all great choices. You will still need a decent memory card as discussed above, though.

Will you list the Canon Digital SLR camera models for me, in order?

I am having trouble with my original REBEL 6.3 mp. Err 02, Err 05, telling me the wrong number of pics left to take. Telling me 'card full' when it has just been formatted an is empty. Under the canon loyalty program I can get a REFURBISHED Xs for $319; an Xsi for $399, or a T1i for $419. comes with 90-day warranty. Seems they've changed memory card size and battery size too. At what model did these changes take place? Or should I buy a new T1i with 18-55 and 50-200 for $880. Your thoughts will be appreciated.

I'm a Nikon user, but here's my two-cents.

Sounds like you have an older Canon (XT, XTi, etc) like my brother has that uses CF memory cards. Now, unless you have a huge collection of CF cards like I do, and/or several extra batteries for your older Canon DSLR, I wouldn't decide on a replacement camera for those reasons only.

My thought are that you should go to a camera shop and handle each of the models currently available. See which one fits you and your shooting style.

Then, (and I have to admire Canon for their Loyalty program - good work, Canon) I'd choose the "shoe that fits" you.
