best compact digital camera...?

i'm planning to buy a new camera, but i'm not the greatest expert on finding the best quality one... i'm looking for one that's preferably under $200, 14 mega pixels, and takes high quality pictures. any brand will do! :)

Answer
1. Under $200 is great, thanks for telling us your range!
2. 14MP is really big, mega pixels means the amount of pixels in a photo, which is the size. It has absolutely nothing to do with image quality.

I found your soul mate:

http://www.target.com/Canon-PowerShot-14-1MP-Digital-Camera/dp/B0035FZJJ4/ref=br_1_2?ie=UTF8&id=Canon%20PowerShot%2014%201MP%20Digital%20Camera&node=318708011&searchSize=30&searchView=list&searchPage=1&sr=1-2&qid=1287533511&rh=price%3A15000-19999&searchBinNameList=target_com_primary_color-bin%2Ctarget_com_category-bin%2Cstyle_name%2Ctarget_com_brand-bin%2Cprice%2Coptical_sensor_resolution_derived%2Coptical_zoom_derived%2Cdisplay_size_derived&searchRank=pmrank&frombrowse=1

This is an amazing camera, it's won many awards for the best of 2010. This is such an easy camera to use, I'd go all for this.

Second- my favorite brand.

http://www.target.com/Sony-CyberShot-14-1MP-Digital-Camera/dp/B00328HR94/ref=br_1_13?ie=UTF8&id=Sony%20CyberShot%2014%201MP%20Digital%20Camera&node=318708011&searchSize=30&searchView=list&searchPage=1&sr=1-13&qid=1287533511&rh=price%3A15000-19999&searchBinNameList=target_com_primary_color-bin%2Ctarget_com_category-bin%2Cstyle_name%2Ctarget_com_brand-bin%2Cprice%2Coptical_sensor_resolution_derived%2Coptical_zoom_derived%2Cdisplay_size_derived&searchRank=pmrank&frombrowse=1

This has so many features!

Then the famous dual-view camera:

Good luck shopping!

What camera should I buy?

Q. I'd like to start a YouTube channel that consists of vlogs and tutorials, and I'd like to get a new camera...what camera is available that takes HD/high quality video and is less than $300?

Answer
A digital slr camera would be best serving your purposes.
Here is a list of all the good camera brands under 300:

http://www.amazon.com/gp/search/ref=sr_nr_p_36_0?bbn=281052&keywords=camera&sort=popular-srp-rank&qid=1328641376&rh=n%3A172282%2Ck%3Acamera%2Cn%3A%21493964%2Cn%3A502394%2Cn%3A281052%2Cp_36%3A10000-15000&rnid=386442011&low-price=200&high-price=300&x=11&y=9&tag=faumioe-20

My favourite is the Canon PowerShot S95 10 MP Digital Camera with 3.8x Wide Angle Optical Image Stabilized Zoom and 3.0-Inch LCD.
You will find a good barrgain here:

canon digital camera 7.1?

In this camera, can the camera make the picture black and white and have an object just be in color?

Answer
Which canon model camera, and which line? the next time you ask a question include that little tid-bit of information. It'll allow us to answer your questions more clearly. So, having that said, i may be unable to fully answer your question. So, usually if you just have a little 7 megapixel, slim and slender canon powershot camera, you can't do this. The feature that allows you to do such is " color accent ", singles out a color, and everything else is in black and white. If you want to get this feature, you'll have to spend quite a bit of money, at least 200$ in my opinion. So, i have a canon powershot s3IS, it has color swap and color accent, but it was a three hundred dollar camera, and i guess that feature could have been expected. There's a newer version of this camera that canon powershot s5IS, which is about the same, and has all of the same features
Remember: if you can't afford a canon camera that can do such, you'll have to pay to get a software. ( i haven't heard of a free software which let you do as such)

Try Photoshop Maybe

canon digital cameras?

Q. hey i've been looking to find a new digital camera. i love taking pictures of things whether it's my friends and me or flowers. i want something w/ nice zoom and that makes good quality pics. i also would like a canon camera...i think they're really good. can anyone tell me a nice canon digital camera that isn't too much money? i mean something below like 400...300 would be my highest probably! i like slim and small so that it fits in my purse and i also said that i like nice zoom...any ideas? thnx :-)
ya well i just want something that has better zoom than the crappy sony one i have now! i'd be happy w/ 4 or 5x zoom it doesn't have to be like 10x or whatever! i need better zoom because i take closeup photos of flowers and other things like that...i think i'm pretty good
but the sony makes the pics come out all fuzzy and everything...my dad's works much better
plus i'm going to france w/ my school in two years when i'm in tenth grade so i'd want something small and not too big so i can put it in a little purse or something

Answer
I LOVE my Canon PowerShot A620. It's a 7.1 mp camera which takes awesome still shots, and just as awesome video. Great for vacation and home use. A great all-around camera.

I had a Sony, and I gave that to my daughter, and purchase the Canon PowerShot A610 for my teenage son. The Canon A610 is exactly like my A620, but is a 5 mp digital camera. They both take GREAT pictures, but my favorite thing about the camera, is the vari-angle LCD screen. It is very easy to use, and a camera you can grow with.

I'm a bargain hunter. I purchased both NEW Canon this past late spring. My son's was under $200 and mine was $204. Just Google or Yahoo! Search for Canon A620, then for the merchant with the best price, and order on-line. The price is waaaay better than going physically to the stores. If you need it right away, just upgrade the shipping. It's still cheaper than buying at the stores. No matter what model camera you're searching for, better prices are on-line.

One of my favorite settings our A610/A620 has is,called "kids&pets". Typically you use these on the subjects that usually has a hard time keeping still. But I also use this setting when taking pictures of my soccer team during game play. I've also taken pictures of my kids, nieces and nephews jumping in the air, a la cheerleader jumps, with great results. Lag time is very, very, very minimal. (i.e. delay from pressing button to actual camera capturing the shot).

I don't know if you'll find these models at the stores. They have newer models, the A630 (8mp) and the A640 (10mp), they boast more mega-pixels. But 5mp, more than suffices for most users. What I did was physically touched and feel the camera at the store, then go on-line to purchase.

Here is the link if you'd like to check out the specs on these Canon cameras: http://www.usa.canon.com
and go to 'products' to 'consumer products' to lead you to the cameras. Check out the zoom on this and other Canon models.

While you're searching on-line, you'll also find many reviews on these cameras. All raving about the camera. You'll also find information on these cameras in Yahoo! Tech.

Hope this helps.

canon vs nikon for basic digital camera?

xhugsnotdr

my last 2 digital camera's have been nikons, and i know everyone raves about them..but honestly..for me they haven't been that great. i've had my current one for almost 2 years now, and the picture quality comes out horrible now. i'm thinking about buying a new camera, and i was thinking about getting either this one: http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=8800577&type=product&id=1205538350143
or
http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=8740348&type=product&id=1202429848939

i know i put another nikon in there, but i've heard good things about that one from several people. i just want it for basic use and good quality pictures. help!

Answer
There is really no difference between similar levels of P&S cameras, so whether you use a Nikon, Canon, Casio, Pentax, Panasonic or Fujifilm, what is important is your technique .... not the camera

My guess is that there could be some issues ... 1) you are hand holding your camera at shutter speeds that are so slow that camera movement does not cause blurry images 2) assure that your cameras ISO is not set to "auto" ... as you know, shooting at high ISO's show a lot of noise, especially in the dark areas

Canon 7D vs. Nikon D300?

Alex

which one do you prefer the most and why ?
is 17MP really matter vs. 12 MP.

Answer
Canon EOS 7D 18 MP CMOS Digital SLR Camera with 3-inch LCD and 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM Standard Zoom Lens.
http://www.amazon.com/Canon-EOS-7D-28-135mm-Standard/dp/B002NEGTU6/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1260071382&sr=1-2&tag=commentglitte-20&linkCode=ur2&camp=1789&creative=9325

By any measure, the new Canon EOS 7D is a worthy successor to the EOS line of APS-C sensor DSLRs. I believe it finally levels the playing field for many Canon shooters envious of Nikon DXXX shooters.

I am an advanced amateur photographer who has owned the 20D for the last 5 years and will use it as a backup body now. With each Canon announcement of a successor to the XXD line of DSLRs, I was tempted to upgrade but resisted each time up until now. This was partly due to budgetary constraints, but I felt mostly that each new model was only an evolutionary modification rather than a revolutionary one. If there's one thing to keep in mind in this fast-moving world of DSLR photography, then it is that DSLR bodies come and go (and depreciate quickly in value, like most electronic goods) but excellent glass will nearly always be sound investments (high-quality lenses maintained in good condition may appreciate in value).

The 7D appears to be a game-changer for many Canon photo enthusiasts like myself who prefer or can only afford to shoot with an APS-C sensor body. Nikon shooters have had an excellent choice of a crop sensor body in the D100/D200/D300 (now D300s), but for Canon shooters, the top-of-the-line equivalent was trailing in the feature set department. Now most of the features that were absent in the Canon XXD body as compared with their main rival are present in the 7D.

Notable features:
- 18 MP APS-C CMOS sensor
- Dual DIGIC 4 processors (a first for a prosumer Canon DSLR)
- Maximum 8 fps frame rate
- Maximum ISO 12,800
- VF with 100% coverage and 1.0x magnification (a first for a Canon DSLR)
- 19-pt AF (all cross-type with f/5.6 or faster lenses)
- 63-zone metering system (measures focus, color, and luminance)
- On-demand grid lines in VF (a first for any Canon DSLR)
- Built-in electronic leveler in 2 planes (a first for any Canon DSLR)
- Built-in wireless flash trigger (a first for any Canon DSLR)
- HD video in 1080p (30/25/24 fps) and 720p (60/50 fps)

I have had the camera for over a week now. My initial impressions are mostly positive thus far. Additional thoughts in the form of updates will be forthcoming once I get an opportunity to capture more images under various conditions (indoors/low light, outdoors, action, etc.) and get my act together to type it up. So far, I believe that the IQ, VF, LCD monitor, and handling are all vast improvements over the 20D. Taking photos at high ISOs and achieving low noise captures is all the rage these days. I feel that random photos I've taken at ISO settings up to 1600 are completely usuable. In the past, I felt comfortable shooting with my 20D mostly south of ISO 400/800. I shall pixel peep some more and shoot at even higher ISOs to see where the happy medium for me shooting with the 7D lies. Tolerance for noise, I feel, is very subjective.

Limitations:
There is a steep learning curve with this camera. The 7D is packed with new features that I have yet to maximize to my advantage. Coming from a 20D rather than a more recent line of XXD body makes things even more challenging. A careful read of the user's manual is critical.

If ultimately low noise captures at high ISOs is most important to you, then a FF sensor body is the way to go rather than an APS-C sensor body. A larger pixel pitch that captures more light (at the expense of lower resolution) will help maintain low noise levels at very high ISOs. This is a key reason why the small-body FFs, such as the Nikon D700, Canon 5D/5DMkII, and Sony A900/A850, are so revered. Any of those cameras will likely outperform the 7D at high ISOs in terms of low noise captures. Moreover, they provide less DoF than APS-Cs at equivalent fields of view. However, the obvious downsides are their cost and need for big, heavy, and expensive glass.

The 7D should not be viewed as an HD camcorder replacement. Although useful to have and with slightly more shooting options as compared with the version currently offered in the 5DMkII, video capture in the 7D still suffers from lack of continuous AF. Unfortunately, the jello phenomenon (from rolling shutter) and monoaural sound (external stereo mic input is available, though) make for a less than harmonious package.

*** Please be aware that some information about potential problems with the initial batch of 7D bodies has surfaced on photography forums and elsewhere (including here on Amazon). They include difficulties with the new AF system (particularly in AI servo mode, though some users have had trouble in any AF mode) resulting in OOF photos, as well as ghosting (residual preceding images captured in subsequent images) under certain sho

honestly though, even though it is a cool feauture you can easily do the same thing on photoshop and you aren't limited to one colour. I've seen some amazing photos like a person standing in front of a crowd of people and they are in colour, like all of them while the crowd is all in black and white.

which digital slr to buy? or non-digital?

I'm looking to buy an SLR camera, but I am on a /very/ tight budget. $300 or less. Is it better to go digital or film? Which cameras do you recommend?

Answer
Canon makes the best Digital SLR in the world today.

I myself own one (Canon Rebel XT) and now they have come up with a new model Canon Rebel XTi I'm sure this one is much better than what I have.

I'm completely satisfied with the features and functionalities of my canon and would highly recommend you to buy this.

You may use the Canon's official website to find out more about the latest models in digital SLRs
http://www.usa.canon.com/consumer/controller?act=ModelDetailAct&fcategoryid=139&modelid=14256

OR you can check out the reviews at
http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/canoneos300d/

The following is the official Canon site regarding the product information. You can pick the camera of your choice of a product released in the year 2000 all the way up to 2006.

Happy clicking!!

Is it possible to download the camera required for this camera?

Bucephalus

Alright, long story short, this is the camera I am buying, however, it looks like a cd-rom is required to be able to use it. (Installing something before my computer will read the camera's images or some such thing); however, my computer's disc tray is broken and I can not currently afford to fix it. Would it be possible to download the required programs for this camera anywhere or even from the official website. I have looked, and admittedly, it's late and I may have missed something, but it didn't look as though I could download the required software. And yes I saw the drivers/software tab on it. Just nothing to actually DOWNLOAD the program.

http://www.usa.canon.com/cusa/consumer/products/cameras/digital_cameras/powershot_a4000_is_blue?color=Silver
Ha, just noticed the silliness of the title. I look like a moron. Please disregard that.
@Looney: If you had payed any attention, rather than skimming, I did say it was late at night, AND that I saw the software/download area, HOWEVER, there was no DOWNLOAD button.

"And yes I saw the drivers/software tab on it. Just nothing to actually DOWNLOAD the program."

Answer
firstly you wont need the bloatware to use your camera as you can use windows programs to both download the pics and view them from the camera and they are built in already.

Second, just get someone else (or the shop) to download the program and copy into a USB stick. Use you this to transfer all that you (dont) need to your PC.

Good luck

What is the best digital photography camera under $300-$400?

sharpie_sw

What is the best digital camera i can get for under $400? i need something that can take good quality pictures because i am going to be using for photography. i want something that has more than 8 megapixels and can focus well. i don't want to spend more than $400 right now, but if you have any recommendations that are a little more than that let me know. i am just looking for a good camera.

thanks!

Answer
Canon S5IS is 8mp, has IS and a huge zoom range (36-432mm on a 35mm camera).

Downside is the relatively large size, its not a pocket camera.

Street price is a little over $300 these days.

The Canon G9 is 12mp but breaks your budget at mid-$400s.

Any SLR above 6mp will break your budget if you want to add anything beyond the kit lens.

What type of digital camera should I buy for under $400?

Lindsey

I have had several digital cameras but I need a new one because my last one broke. I don't need anything professional, just one that will take good quality pictures. I'm traveling to Spain in the summer, so I want a camera that will be good in different settings (outside, museums, bars) and I would like for it to be able to take video too. I just don't know the differences between the brands for digital cameras and I was looking for some guidance. Any suggestions? Thanks!

Answer
Hey Lindsey!
You can get a VERY nice camera for $400. I recommend canon's and Samsung's.
First, the Canon's. The SD780 IS, is Canon's newest camera, and the most compact camera on the market. It has 12.1 megapixels, and a 2.5" LCD screen. This camera comes in amazing colors. Gold, Red, Silver, and Black. This camera's price from Canon is $249.99.
Next, I want to show you some Samsung's. Samsung is a Japanese brand, and Japanese brands are known for their amazing technology.
First, I recommend the Samsung DualViews. The Samsung DualViews are the newest camera by Samsung. They are absolutely awesome, with 12.4 megapixels! They have a screen on the front and the back, so you can take a picture of yourself, or you and your friends. They have excellent ratings everywhere I have seen, and are a good quality. You can choose from two models, one at $299.99 and one at $349.99. You would love this camera.
Next, I want to show you another Samsung. The Samsung HZ15W. It is a 12 megapixel camera that has an amazing Schneider ultrawide lens. This camera is better for higher quality pictures. I definitely recommend this one also.

Good luck Lindsey, and I hope you find what your looking for! :)

Best LENS for taking LANDSCAPE photos on a Canon 450d digital SLR camera?

AtWittsEnd

I am thinking about buying a CANON 450d digital SLR camera (which comes with a bog-standard 18-55mm Lens.

I am a Graphic Designer and need to take mostly LANDSCAPE shots (beautiful scenes of local landscape and coastlines) with a Camera that will give me the Highest Quality Image Resolutions to thus be eventually used in high quality printed Large Brochures, A2 Posters, etc.

I am not a photography expert and so need some advice on Lenses:

1. Is the standard 18-55mm Lens reasonably ok for my purpose?

2. Should I purchase a new Lens that will give me better LANDSCAPES results/capability/panoramics/etc?

3. If yes, then What Type/Make/Specs/ImageStabilisation/Price of lens would be best?

Many, many thanks for any help!

Answer
The kit lens is reasonable good, but not the best.

You might want an ultra wide angle lens like the EF-S 10-22mm.

Here are some good landscape lenses and reviews:
http://the-digital-picture.com/Canon-Lenses/Canon-Landscape-Lens.aspx

Good Canon digital camera?

I already have the zoom and standard lens from my rebel g camera which I assume would be interchangeable with a digitial camera??? so am wondering what a good digital camera model would be (also Canon) that would give professional type results. I need high pixels so that I can submit photos to a professional stock photo site.

Answer
The previous poster's recommendation would be good if you did not need a digital SLR, but you will need one if you want to use those lenses. To answer your first question, you will be able to use them as long as they are EF mount lenses. You can tell by looking on the lens box most of the time.

Again, to use your lenses, you will need a digital SLR. Canon offers several high megapixel options at varying price points. Depending on your definition of "high megapixels", here are some recommendations. Let's just say you need 10 megapixels or higher.

There is a digital SLR available from Canon at every level (entry level, prosumer, and professional) that is 10 megapixels or higher.

10 megapixels: 400D ($800), 40D ($1200), 1DMarkIII ($4500)
12 megapixels: 5D ($2600)
16 megapixels: 1Ds Mark II ($7000)
22 megapixels: 1Ds Mark III ($8000, ships in October)

If these are all out of your price range, you may have to give up lens interchanging capability for a conventional digital point and shoot. The A640 (10mp) and Powershot G9 would be worth looking at, too.

what does ELPH stand for in reference to digital cameras?

mariner111

Answer
ELPH does not refer to any digital camera, it refers specifically to a line of Canon Digital Cameras. Basically its the combination of Elf + Photograph = ELPH. Here's wikipedia's way of saying it more technically:

Canon ELPH can refer to the following:

* Canon's Digital ELPH series of cameras
* The Canon ELPH series of APS cameras
* The original Canon ELPH camera introduced in 1996

"Elph name The name 'Elph' appeared in both mixed case and upper case in earlier Elph cameras, but recent cameras have standardized on upper case only, leading some to erroneously blieve 'ELPH' refers to the acronym for Electronic Physics. In actuality, it is a combination of the word 'elf' (for a camera that is small and magical) and the word 'photograph.' Besides being memorable marketing, the use of a non-standard spelling of 'elf' makes it a defensible Copyright."

Canon PowerShot SD750 Digital ELPH Camera?

frogz92

is the Canon PowerShot SD750 Digital ELPH Camera
a good camera. i want to buy it so i would like to see what you have to say before i go spend money on it. just tell me what you like and dont like about it. thank you

Answer
For the price, it is a good little camera, but it is lacking either a view finder or IS. You need at least one of those features to assure sharp images shooting in low light situations without flash.

For about $30 more you can get a great camera that has both.

Digital Cameras??

Laaa

What should I look for in a camera? (megapixels, zoom, flash....so on)
I want a good quality picture; clear, nice colors... etc.
I want a camera the snaps fast and has good options.
Basically like those professional cameras, but cheaper and smaller.

Any suggestions? (Needs to have a rechargable battery, I don't like the ones that you need to buy batteries for)

Answer
Canon has always been a great company for me. Check out the "elph" series, they're pretty nice. Just make sure not to get fooled by the "digital zoom" nonsense. Optical zoom is what matters, digital is simply enlarging the pixels; you can do it on your computer when you upload them.

Semi-pro Digital SLR - Canon or Nikon..?

Muse

Which camera manufacturer do you prefer and why do you like them better?
Thanks for all your posts - here are additional details... I guess I am leaning towards Canon. However, I only have a Canon PowerShot S2IS. I have used a Canon Rebel SLR in the past. I would say my photo skills range from basic to intermediate depending upon the category of discussion.

I have developed a talent for subject composition and am working on my technique. Want to take my hobbie/skill to the next level...

People have requested to hire me, so I would like to have the appropriate equipment to get the job done and start my own business: Fashion, Product, Portrait, HeadShots, Nature.... I like the Image Stabilization of the Canon, but Nikon has some pluses too...I am wondering which will give me better overall pics in these above mentioned categories.

Money is always an obstacle, and I am trying to get by for around $3,000-$3,500 total equipment to start... (don't laugh!).

I was even contemplating using my powershot as my back-up camera...

Thanks!!!

Answer
First of all, the canon does not have image stabilzation. The Lenses do, and Nikon also has VR lenses

The very minimum you can get buy with is a canon 40D. The Nikon d300
is also a good bet.

I would say, for your price range,

get the nikon d300, an 18-200mm VR lens and an SB 900 flash

My projected cost for this would be

1500 for the camera 600 for the lens and 500 for the flash.

The camera is pretty high end, and can certainly be used for weddings and portraits...and everything else. The SB 900 is the top of the line flash and the 18-200mm
lens has gotten some decent ratings...and also will give you an excellent wide angle to pretty decent zoom (200mm on the d300 will be equivalent to 300mm

so that brings us to 1500+600+500= 2600. Now, for the remainder,
I would suggest getting a secondary flash..the sb 600, which should be about $200.= 2800. Finally i would suggest getting the 60mm f2.8
MACRO lens which will enable you to focus at 1:1 for close up product shots and on the d300, the 60mm range will give a perfect range for nice portraits as well, and its a FAST lens at f2.8...that's probably an extra 500 bucks...bringing us to 3300.

Try going down to your local camera store and suggest that you got this suggestion as a start up, and see what they tell you. I think that you will find that my prices are pretty accurate. The reason I suggested getting the secondary flash is due to the fact that Nikon has an excellent wireless flash system. Using two flashes will give you more control over your lighting..

I regularly talk to camera store guys. One told me he was shooting weddings and so forth with a canon 40D which is a great camera, and like I said, the very minimum you can get buy with. Its a bit cheaper than a Nikon d300, but another camera guy I talk to, and not just a salesperson but a true EXPERT and camera fanatic LOVES his Nikon d300...says there isn't anything he has found that it won't do, and he does a lot of fast action photos in low light.

I'm surprised other people didn't recommend flashes...for what you want to do, I really think you need the two flashes...
....you certainly need at least ONE top of the line flash...which is the SB900 from Nikon. Canon also has wireless flash systems as well.....

Sure you can get the L lenses and the 70-200mm f2.8 lenses and so forth, but not withing your budget. I'm trying to get you a pretty good startup here withing your budget.

One of the first answers listed lenses that would cost about $4000 minimum.

Please suggest me a good Digital camera to buy?

mkjijull

Hi,

I am planning to buy a digital cam.
my budget is around 200$. 9000 INR.
Preferred make - Cannon & Nikon.

I have chosen three models

Canon IXUS 220 HS Point & Shoot(12.1 Megapixel,Optical Zoom: 4x, CMOS Image Sensor,with 2.7 inch LCD, 10665 INR)
Canon IXUS 115 HS Point & Shoot(12.1 Megapixel,Optical Zoom: 4x, CMOS Image Sensor,with 3.0 inch LCD, 9210 INR)
Canon A 3300 Point & Shoot(16 Megapixel,Optical Zoom: 5x, CCD Image Sensor,with 3.0 inch LCD, 8725 INR)
becoz all these models comes under my budget.

The third model which i have mentioned has most of the options but its still less in price, Why?

Also suggest me any good models which are cheap and best.

All i need is when i shoot a image or video and transfer to PC it should be in good quality. I dont mind the image quality in 3.0 inch LCD in the camera.

Answer
Why is Canon A330 less expensive?
- Shoots lower definition video (720 vs 1081)
- Does not have HDMI
- Slower maximum shutter speed
- Slower continuous drive (.8 fps vs. 3.4 fps)
- Lower ISO range (1600 vs. 3200)
- larger
Here are the 3 specs side by side

10 megapixel Kodak and Canon digital cameras?

Woudl the additional $200 be worth it for the Canon if the pixels are the same? And what makes Canon so much more expensive and are they really worth the aditional cost?

Dude, Canon smokes Kodak in this department. Now I am not sure where you are looking for cameras, but you may want to check out this place: www.digitaldealz.net, I saved a buttload of money when I bought my Canon Rebel. Good luck!

what's a good digital camera to learn photography with?1?

Alicen1ndr

well i joined deviant art a while back and looking at all the photography there made me want to learn how. right now i have a mediocre camera but i don't like taking pix with it; it has a P and M mode but it was obviously designed for point-and-shoot purposes, and my dad got this amazing camera for christmas it's so great i'm not really sure what it's called but the strap says Canon EOS Digital. the features i like the most are the manual focus and zoom. the problem is i'm too young for a job and i want to get the camera by like september. so i calculated that if i make the purchase in september i will have roughly $280..that doesn't go far towards a camera :( but there's a small possibility that i can get another few hundred, but i'm really not sure. i could also maybe borrow half the money from my parents; i've done that before. so with the price range being between $300 and $650 dollars, what do you all reccommend? (ps i want it to be digital)
txx!!!

Check this (Almost DSLR) FUJIFILM S1000fd camera - FinePix 10.0-Megapixel Digital.
Life time Warranty (Parts & Labor).
Wide-angle shooting, a 12x optical zoom and picture stabilization mode combine in this camera for exceptional shooting performance, even at a distance. Plentiful scene modes, autofocus and automatic white balance controls make this camera a snap to operate. You may be able to find it on the Internet for a lower price.

While most of the cameras out there are really good, I would choose Canon over Nikon because it seems like more camera for the money. Some would say Canon withholds their best technology for high end cameras and Nikon implements their best at all levels. Before you decide, read all the text and links in the information below because it will help you know what to look for in a camera.

In new cameras, look for a viewfinder (LCD invisible in bright sun), optical (not CCD) image stabilizer, and check battery prices. High mega pixel settings take longer to process and may not be needed unless required for very large pictures. Maximum print size for a 3 mega pixel setting is 8 x 10 inches. What gives a camera its picture quality?
The short answer is that it is mostly the skill of the photographer that produces high quality pictures. The lens and camera are very important, but the ability to set the scene, adjust the cameras settings, and hold the camera very still or use a tripod with auto or remote shutter actuation when required is what gets the great pictures.

My camera has 5.2 mega pixel, but I use 3 most of the time because it gives great results, is faster, and takes less memory. Also, it only has a 3 x optical zoom and 7 x digital zoom. I never use the digital zoom because making pictures larger works better on the computer. This is an old camera, but everyone is impressed with the quality pictures it takes ... like magic.

Who makes better digital cameras Sony or Canon and why?

Alice

I'm looking for a new camera and I've always been a big fan of Sony products, my mom has a Canon Powershot and I had a Sony Cyber-shot T70 I think, both camera are nice. But I want your opinion.

Answer
For the most part, the quality of the image is essentially the same. Sony actually makes Canon sensors for the most part. Sony does use a better quality lens through - Ziess. They've been making glass for a long, long time. So if you're in the market for good glass, make sure that the sony you're looking at has Ziess written on the lens.
Canon's lenses are really think glass almost plastic material.

I've been dealing with camera's for far too long.

Which is Best Digital camera company? Canon, sony or Nikon?

Maxtor

I wanna purchase digital camera. but i m confused little bit, that which is best Canon, Sony or Nikon? plz pull out me from this confusion.

Answer
depends on what type of camera you are looking for..
If its a point and shoot I would go say 1. Canon 2. Sony 3. Nikon... if its DSLR then its a toss up between Canon and Nikon and Sony is third place... if its just who makes the best sensors, then its a tie between Canon and Sony and Nikon is a distant third (most high end Nikon DSLRs use Sony sensors)... Canon and Nikon are really good at the lens side of the business, Sony on the other hand is very good at making sensors but pretty weak at the link between the sensor and the lens.

Canon Digital Cameras?

I am looking to upgrade my canon rebel xs to something better. What would be a step up and a good canon camera to buy? I was looking at the t1i or the t2i, something in this price range. I wish I would have bought a better one to being with so I don't want to make the same mistake!

Answer
Although the T1i is a great camera, the T2i is a phenomenally better camera for minimal price difference. I've used the T2i since its release a year ago last February. Jim is absolutely right that the lens will make a bigger difference in image quality then the body of the camera. But if you are heavy into Adobe, the T2i with 18mp opens up a lot of doors towards editing. Also, the 28 - 200, although a good lens, is expensive with quite a bit of barrel distortion. I'd figure out what types of shots you prefer to take and get a lens that works for that use. For macro there are two lenses (50mm 1.8 @ only $100, but not the best quality) and the (50mm 1.7, don't remember price but closer to $350) that are both reasonably priced, but the 1.7 is a much better image quality. If you want a good daily use lens the 17-55 has great reviews. If you are looking more toward telephoto, the 55 - 250 is a good lens, though you'll get near-L series quality with the 70-300mm IS USM lens, but at 2 times the cost of the 55-250. A great all-purpose lens (what I use) is the 15 - 85mm 3.5 IS USM lens. Best place for reviews: dpreview.com

Many of the new cameras come with only an LCD screen which is almost impossible to see in bright sun so you should try to find one that also has an optical view finder.

Check replacement battery prices when buying a new camera. Some proprietary batteries cost almost as much as the camera and may be only good for 200 shots between charges.

Higher mega pixels may not really be the best thing to look for. It is more expensive, takes longer to process, and may not be needed unless you are making a really large picture or blowing up a small part of a picture. Maximum print size for a 3 mega pixel setting is 8 x 10 inches.

digital camera?

Q. What is the best digital camera to buy? My price limit is $300.?
I just want to take pictures of my friends and family. I also need it because I am going on 3 vacations this summer. I want the pictures to be clear. I never had a cam b4 so I don't want a hi tech one I can not figure out... also name the model please

Answer
Canon PowerShot A630--top drawer camera with 8 megapixels (means sharper pictures) and decent zoom (4x). The only drawback is it is a little bulky--won't fit in a shirt pocket. It has a cool swivel viewscreen, though, that enables you to take pics of yourself or whatever without using the timer (which it also has). I've owned one of these for about a year, and have been fully pleased with it--it takes good pictures of everything from my kids to nature to stuff I put on ebay :)

If you are willing to sacrifice a bit of picture quality for a smaller camera (and gain a larger, but no swivel, view screen), go with the PowerShot SD600.

Hope that helps!

canon digital cameras?

Q. hey i've been looking to find a new digital camera. i love taking pictures of things whether it's my friends and me or flowers. i want something w/ nice zoom and that makes good quality pics. i also would like a canon camera...i think they're really good. can anyone tell me a nice canon digital camera that isn't too much money? i mean something below like 400...300 would be my highest probably! i like slim and small so that it fits in my purse and i also said that i like nice zoom...any ideas? thnx :-)
ya well i just want something that has better zoom than the crappy sony one i have now! i'd be happy w/ 4 or 5x zoom it doesn't have to be like 10x or whatever! i need better zoom because i take closeup photos of flowers and other things like that...i think i'm pretty good
but the sony makes the pics come out all fuzzy and everything...my dad's works much better
plus i'm going to france w/ my school in two years when i'm in tenth grade so i'd want something small and not too big so i can put it in a little purse or something

I live in Pakistan, now i need a good digital camera. I can buy a camera in range of 100 dollar to 120 dallar.
Camera shoul make good quality movies and still amages.
What about Canon Powershot A470?
Please help me, it is my time for digital camera.

Answer
All of the major brands are good. Choose a brand that appeals to you. Then you have to think about getting a spare battery, what size memory card, if you want an extended warranty, how much you can afford, what size zoom, if you want manual controls, the size of the camera, finding a reliable place to purchase it, and the list goes on and on and on.......

The first thing to realize is that almost any digital camera will take good pictures. If more people would read the manual more than once, they would be able to take better pictures. Usually, the person assumes it is the camera when it could be them not knowing exactly what to do. Just give yourself more photographic knowledge by doing more reading on the internet.

I really believe buying a camera is an individual choice.
The person needs to read alot of reviews on cameras so they can decide on the features that they really want and need.
Go to the store and hold them so you can see if they feel comfortable in your hands. If possible, take some pictures in the store to check the quality of the pictures.
I can only give a suggestion of what to look for in a new digital camera.
Good Luck

Canon 30d?

sekp1987

I was originally going for a 40d body ($1200-body only! ouchies). Then I thought nikon d80. ($800-900 body only) THEN I thought XTI. It's a lot cheaper and good for beginners. But now I think a 30d might be a good idea. It's been on the market for a few years thus, former beginners are wanting to upgrade and sell.

Anyway, I heard that when you're not a super pro photographer, megapixels only mean so much. (30d has 8mp vs the usual 10-12+mp of entry level dslrs). I figure I'd try to get a less new camera so I can get a good lens or two or three. I've read the xti vs 30d vs 40d vs etc etc stuff so I'm pretty comfortable with the knowledge I have.

The going used price is $600ish via craigslist/good winning bid on ebay.

The going refurbished/open box/etc camera is about $700 or so.

So do you think it's a good idea to buy a 30d at about those prices? Or maybe you know of where I can get a better deal.

OR, if you have any suggestions at all or comments/wisdom, that's cool 2
I mean, just because it's old and not being made any more doesnt mean it's not good. Right? That's what I've been told anyway.

hey, that is the link to the canon eos 30d, they have " new " ones there, they aren't used or refurbished.

i would say that the canon eos 30d is a good camera, it has 8 megapixels which is good, it has a big screen which is convinient for displaying your work, it looks and feels more pro, that the canon xti. i would say that the 30d, has much more features, and would be better in the long term

when you buy something off of ebay, be careful some of that crap they sell is so cheap because smtn is wrong with it lol, but i wouldn't say that in all cases though.

Digital camera recommendations?

I've never had a "real" camera (just the disposable ones), and my fiance and I will be married this June. We wanted to buy a good digital camera to take on the honeymoon. We aren't photographers, but we'd like a good camera for some nice photos. Can you give advice regarding the best one to buy with the best price (or refund/rebate, etc.)? Thanks!

Answer
If youâre looking for a point & shoot, user friendly digital camera, I have to say, I like Canon. Nothing against other the other brands. I prefer Canon based on personal experience and their reputation. They have an awesome line of cameras that can fit any kind of budget and offers different features depending on type of photography usage.

My advice for those shopping for a point & shoot digital camera, you may want to consider the following: 1) 5 mp this is best for most users. 2) OPTICAL zoom with at least 4X. (Digital zoom shouldnât be high priority in a digital camera). 3) camera ought to have an viewfinder. Some models are doing away with the viewfinder. It is very helpful to have, when the subject is difficult to see in the LCD/display screen on a very bright day, or to conserve battery life. (Continuous screen use, suck up battery life). 4) Uses AA regular or rechargeable batteries. Some models have specialized lithium ion batteries, where you charge it while in the camera. With AA, you can always pick up a spare if you find yourself caught with low batteries and are not able to charge the camera/lithium ion battery quickly. 5)And a PLUS, can take video/movie mode. (Which most do!)

Canon has an awesome line that can fit the bill. Consider the PowerShot models, the A630 (8mp; 4x optical zoom) or the A640 (10 mp; 4x optical zoom). These models have helpful pre-set shooting modes that you choose for the particular picture situation you are about to shoot. Like: auto(matic), portrait, nighttime, landscape, indoor, snow, beach, kids & pets (subjects that wonât keep still), and more⦠You can also be creative with some of the models, where you can choose special FX settings as you are shooting a pictures. These 2 models also have the option to program/set your own manual settings. You should bear in mind, with physical size of the camera, (subcompact/slim/flat vs. compact), you compromise features that are available on the compact/slightly larger models.

I own the Canon PowerShot A620 (7.1 mp). My favorite feature of this model is the vari-angle (flip and twist) display/LCD screen. It protects the screen when not in use, and helpful for odd angle shots, especially if you want to take a picture of yourself or of yourself with others. (i.e you and your spouse!) Picture taking is instant! I have found lag time is not an issue, with this camera, compared to my first digital camera. The updated version of my A620 is the A630 and A640. Here is a review and its features (keep scrolling to see the vari-angle screen), up close and personal:
http://www.dcresource.com/reviews/canon/powershot_a630_a640-review/index.shtml

Here is where I go to shop on-line for the best price for digital cameras. (Which I found to have considerable better prices than going locally to your nearest digital camera dealer). Just type in your camera model in the âsearch keywordâ: http://lowpricedigital.com/category.asp?master_category_Id=1000 Buy soon or check daily, for prices changes daily amongst merchants. Also check if the camera is being sold ânewâ or ârefurbishedâ.

If youâd rather buy from the store, check the usual places, Best Buy, Circuit City, Wal-Mart, Target, and camera stores. Even consider Office Max, Office Depot, CostCo/Samâs Club---any store with a camera department.

Congrats and Good luck! (On the marriage and finding a digital camera!)

Canon 550d or Nikon d3100?

Russell Di

i'm producing a short action film this summer and i'm budgeting to purchase either a canon 550d or nikon d3100, my issue is i cannot decide which one i'd prefer to have, i'll be using the 18-55mm kit lens that comes provided with both units as i'm sticking to a camera budget of £460

any help anyone online can offer would be gratefully accepted

cheers all

russ

Answer
Those 2 cameras are not equivalents.
The 550D is the equivalent of the Nikon D5000; the Nikon D3100 is the equivalent of the Canon EOS1100D.
Having said that, the prices on Amazon are pretty much equal

Have you considered the Canon 1100D? Amazon have it for £354 so you will have some change from your budget for accessories.

What's a good digital Canon camera to get? $2k budget.?

Meow

I'm looking to buy a new Canon digital SLR camera. I want to spend about $1,500 on the camera alone, and $500 on lenses/fish eye lens. I need some suggestions on which camera to look into buying. Thank you! (Sample pictures of what the camera takes is super helpful).

Answer
Kirra, you might actually want to reverse your budget numbers. (i.e. $500 on the camera, $1500 on the lenses). I say this because fisheye lenses, especially those of decent quality are not cheap. Also, Canon's current pricing puts camera either above or below your stated budget. The 50D costs about $1100 and may get replaced later this year. The 7D costs about $1700 and is not necessarily the best choice for a first time DSLR buyer. Also, Canon only offers one fish-eye lens at this time (EF 15mm f/2.8 Fisheye, $680 USD) and it is specifically meant for full-frame cameras rather than the 1.6x crop-body cameras that fit your budget requirements.

It should also be noted that the EF 15mm f/2.8 fish-eye, if mounted on 1.6x crop-body (e.g. Rebel T2i/EOS 550D, 50D or 7D), is just a severely distorted ultra wide-angle lens (not a fish-eye). Rather than providing a true, 180-degree FOV as it does on a full-frame DSLR, a 1.6x crop-body only sees about 113-degrees which is similar to the FOV of a 14mm non-fish-eye lens on a full-frame DSLR. There are alternative brands such as Sigma, who make a true 10mm f/2.8 fish-eye for 1.6x crop-bodies but, even that "cheap" Sigma will cost about $650.

If you're willing to buy a used camera, the original Canon 5D sells for $1500 or less depending on the camera's condition. Before you turn away a used camera, keep in mind that the original 5D still beats even the mighty 7D for image quality specifically because of it's larger, full-frame sensor. Unless you are shooting sports, the original 5D may actually be the best camera you can buy given your budget. If you're shooting sports, I'd look at the 50D or splurge for the 7D. Otherwise, with a budget of $1500 for the body alone, there is nothing on the market (from any manufacturer) that will beat the original 5D for raw image quality.

Anyone have a Canon PowerShot SD890 IS Digital ELPH digital camera? Thoughts? ?

KJOY

I just got one today as a replacement for the SD 630 I think it was called and wanted to know what people think of it. Oh and if you know anything cool about them I would appreciate you letting me know because I hate reading owner's manuals. Thanks!

Answer
The SD890 IS is just another one in a long line of Canon's very cool, ultra compact cameras. I would advise you to read the User Guide, thoroughly. How else will you learn to use all it's features and functions, etc. Surely you can't expect someone to tell you how to use it for you?

I would also advise you to attach the wrist strap and always use it, because it's your insurance against permanent damage if you drop it (these little cameras can get a bit slippery at times). Also, you should buy a snug case to protect it (and especially the LCD screen) when you're not using it.

Check out the review links below. They walk through the camera's functions etc...and may help you learn all it's secrets.

Hope you have lots of fun with it...and if I didn't already mention it, READ THE MANUAL!!!!

Serious advice about buying Digital SLRs and lenses?

Paul

I am currently researching digital cameras and Digital SLR cameras. Please, could any experienced photographers recommend specific camera(s) and why you think that camera is superior?

What are the most important specs to pay attention to, such as shutter speed, focus ranges...etc when making such an important purchase? (I'm not only trying to find the right camera, but also a camera that will help me become a better photographer...)

I enjoy all different kinds of photography but particularly macro photography. If I decide to get an SLR camera, what things are important to pay attention to when buying a lense?

If you know of any websites that contain the information I'm asking for, please post that too!

Thanks so much!

Answer
I will start with my personal recommendation for macro photography: Canon 40D + Canon 100mm F2.8 fixed lens. It's a 1:1 aspect ration lens (that means no distortion due to enlargement effect and so) with clear crisp image and excellent colors.

Second, as general recommendations:
- don't run off for megapixels. Megapixels are important if you make large poster-size prints but if you stick to digital medium only it's slightly useful to allow you to cut and crop the image (basically giving you extra zoom for details).
- senzor build (CCD vs CMOS): that's basically Pentax and Nikon vs Canon. Pentax and Nikon cameras have a more natural feel to their images, with slightly more noise (color abberation at high sensitivity) while Canon has crisp clear and sharp images which also have a digital feel to them. I won't get into the 4:3 open standard (Olympus) because it's too poor to stand against the other three.
- on focus, generally you want as many focus points as possible, lately the standard number is 9 AF sensors, but that thing is, in poor light any camera eventually fails and you'll want either a plug-in extra flash (on hotshoe, since plug-in flashes have a red autofocus assist which can light the subject with a red light to allow focusing) or simply go on manual mode.
- overall, no digital SLR will hinder your ability to take great shots, at worst you'll need some Photoshop skills to repair the image (sure it's preferable to shoot a perfect image but no matter how good you are, 98% of your shots will need retouching). Most important thing is usability (for example I love Pentax and Nikon because their cameras have two separate wheels that are right next to your index and shutter finger to control both aperture and exposure time in manual mode, while Canon has another wheel on the camera's back which hinders your ability to quickly set camera parameters in a quick action sequence). You'll just have to try and hold a camera before you buy (try the B&H showroom in NY).
- look around the Internet for sample shots taken with your potential camera and lenses.
- don't buy long lenses just because they have high mm numbers. Rule of the thumb is: for portraits you'll want bright small lenses (50mm f1.2 or f1.8, the lower the f, less light is needed for a good image, that's great for indoors for example - also fixed lenses give you that blur around the main subject, called a bokeh effect), for sports and action and wildlife you'll want long lenses but also small f (400-1000mm f4), for macro you want ... well ... macro lenses (capable of close-range focus, that deliver best detail ... they're usually marked as macro, but theoretically any lens is capable of delivering various level of macro detail - don't trust macro converter filters, they work but they also produce various abberations).
- Also, fast memory cards are needed. For best quality you'll want to shoot in RAW Format. These files are very large and the camera will need to be able to quickly write the files on to the cart and get ready for next shot. SD 140x, CF Ultra III, that's the stuff. Cheap regular 40x or 80 cards will get clogged in transfer (you don't lose data, but you'll find that your camera will refuse to shoot until photos in its buffer get written on the memory card).
- Check out with your friends and see what SLRs they use. I switched from Pentax to Canon mainly because most of my friends have Canons, that means I can borrow their lenses every now and then and I don't need to buy the entire collection of lenses I need all by myself. You go to a concert with a friend, you take your fixed focal lens, he takes his telephoto zoom lens, you can switch between you the lenses as needed and you don't need each to carry both kind of lenses.
- almost forgot about wide-angles: I won't go into physics, but what you need to know is that for regular DSLR, a lens starting over 28mm (like 28-70mm) is a zoom lens and below (like 17-55mm: is a wide angle). A lens below 28mm (when set at its minimum focal range) is able to get a wider field of view (effectively a zoom-out) which is great for landscapes. A greater focal length narrows the field of view, zooming in. The ratio maximum focal length divided by minimum focal length is the optical x zoom you see on some compact cameras (eg 28-70 mm means 2.5x zoom). However in most cases a fixed focal length lens (which basically has a zoom 1x ) is much better than large zoom (large zoom usually mean large f numbers, making low light photography nearly impossible).
And as a general piece of advice regarding camera purchases: don't get carried away by advertising such as "OMG we have a 16x zoom on our camera!!!". A 28-448mm lens has 16x zoom but it's useless for landscapes. If it's also a f4, then I'd take it to the recycling bin. A 17-70mm lens however is a wide-angle, has a little zoom (4.2x) and has decent macro potential. I'd buy it over the 16x any day.

For more details, well, I have a few guides written around the net.

Cheers!

Any reccomended digital cameras that have a very good camcorder function?

ralphnfifi

Looking for one that will take an hour or two worth of decent video too. Thanks anyone.

Answer
Canon Powershot S2 IS. Highly recommended camera (by Consumer Reports) and I've used it to video record from time to time with good results (example, recorded several minutes at the end of the basketball game between George Mason and UConn in the NCAA tourny from second level. Up to 40X zoom, so you can get a variety of views, and horizontal stabilization keeps things fairly clear even at magnification). Length of video would depend on how much memory you put in. Probably want at least a 1G card for the amount of time you're talking about.

what is the best digital camera in canon?

j

I'm not a professional or expert photographer so I have no idea about the ISO, or noise thing. Whenever I read reviews regarding canon g10, that's the usual words i can see. Is Canon G10 excellent? I really want to buy a slr but I cant afford it.

Answer
I recommend Canon Digital Rebel XSi 12.2 MP Digital SLR Camera.
If you do a search on reviews of this camera you will find a lot of first time DSLR buyers deciding to get this camera. I am one of them. After years of Point and Shoot camera use thinking the convenience of carrying them and using them was worth it, I came to the realization that I wasn't happy with most of the pictures I took. They preserved the moment but almost none of them were worth blowing up or printing. Mediocre flash, zoom, megapixels, etc limited me and the pictures.

I love all the features of this camera for the price, especially the dedicated ISO button on top and the menu system is very easy to figure out, and the 3 inch LCD screen. There is also the switch to SD memory cards which are apparently easier to use than CF. It is so easy to take the card out, put it in an SD USB card reader, load the pictures and return the card to the camera, rather than have to fiddle around with opening the little door on the camera and connecting a cable from it to the PC.

If you are contemplating buying your first DSLR you must remember that the camera is just the start. You will need to invest in a quality external flash to improve your flash pictures. And there is the various zoom lens, that now utilize Image or Optical Stabilization, a technology worth the extra cost. I was happy to do all this and I am absolutely satisfied with this camera and the Canon lens and flash as well. I now am very happy with carrying a bigger but absolutely superior camera.

What brand is best for digital SLR cameras? Nikon or Canon?

Q. Or which brand do you prefer?

I'm looking into purchasing a DSLR camera but i'm stuck on which brand to get. I've owned both Nikon and Canon digital camera's and i've noticed that Nikon has a poor picture quality. I'm unsure if that is also the case with Nikon's DSLR camera's. I'm also only an amature photographer that focuses on landscape, marco and portrait shooting. Any Suggestions on lens's would be great too!

Answer
I like canon Compact cameras more then I do Nikon, but in the DSLR run, Canon and Nikon are basically the exact same in every way. Its like Coke v. Pepsi. You have people that like Canon, and you have people that like Nikon

Either way, you will have to buy the camera and an extra lens or two for the macro and the portraits

you will have to tell us a budget for all the equipment, because the cheapest you can make it is about $1000 for what you want to do.

If you are a beginner, you can look at the Nikon D3000, D5000, and D3100 and the Canon Rebel Xs, T1i, and T2i. All of these are under $1000 with one lens

if you are more intermediate, the Nikon D7000 is a great camera, followed by the D300s. and these two are $1500-$1800 with a single lens.

as for lenses, this is a good all-around lens that can do portraits somewhat and can do macro
http://www.nikonusa.com/Nikon-Products/Product/Camera-Lenses/2190/AF-S-DX-Micro-NIKKOR-85mm-f%252F3.5G-ED-VR.html
Canon has their equivalent

then you have probably the best portrait lens:

along with another macro lens.
