What Canon compact digital camera should I buy -- either A4000 or A2600?

Q. Which should I buy? ...it is between the Canon A4000 IS or A2600?

Technical Benefit Differences of A4000 IS the A2600 lacks I see:
1. More zoom range (8x vs.5x)
2. Optical Image Stabilization/Intelligent Image Stabilization
3. Better Macro Capability (1 cm vs. 3 cm)

Technical Benefit Differences of A2600 the A4000 lacks I see:
1. Longer Battery Life (ECO Mode -- up to 30% more pictures per battery charge)
2. Wider Aperture (f/2.8 vs. f/3.0)
3. Lower Light Exposure Sensitivity in Low Light Mode only (ISO 6400 vs. ISO 1600)
4. Digital Image Stabilization -- Yes, an added feature the A4000 lacks; but greatly inferior to Optical Image Stabilization/Intelligent Image Stabilization

The physical size, dimensions, and weight differences, are very minor to me; both relatively small. Other than these differences above, they are technically the same compact camera. The A2600 is this years (2013) new Canon compact model release -- highest model of the newest of the A-series. The A4000 IS is last years (2012) Canon compact model release -- overall highest still for this years A-series lineup.

This is just an opinion question, but if you could justify your answers as to why YOU would pick one over the other with reason, that would be great! I am stumped. I am torn between these two. Thanks!

If you ask what kind of pictures I generally take, I take all kinds like landscapes, portraits, close-ups, night scenes, action, etc.. Yes, a general use camera.

No need to enumerate what you shoot. It is expected for all cameras to do them all anyway.

Judging from those spec differences, I'd go for the A2600. Battery life would be a huge issue and it would be nice to see Canon actually address the shortness of it once and for all. Wider apertures allow for longer shooting pleasure after the sun has gone down. It also helps blur backgrounds more easily for closeup portraits.

Although I personally avoid going higher than ISO 1600, it's good to know there's more in case I really need it. Image stabilization would be great though for making razor sharp shots but it's not really that important as I am confident my hands can still hold on steadily.

First off, the XX12 is not suitable for astrophotography. You need a telescope that can be polar aligned and tracks. The XX12 does neither, since it is a altitude-azimuth mount, instead of a equatorial type mount and has no drive motors.

You can use a web camera for doing simple lunar and planetary work. Then you can capture a few seconds worth of video and then stack the frames up to get a picture.

But if you want to look at cameras, you need to figure out a couple things -

Do you want to use an off shelf DSLR camera? That you can use during the day as well as night?

Or, a dedicated camera that is for astrophography only? And do you want the camera to do color or monochrome?

A DSLR is a a nice choice for starting out, since you can dual purpose it. The problems with it are that you need to be able to control the shutter for minutes (most only go to 30 seconds) and it needs to have low electronic noise. The preferred DSLR's to use are from Canon. A dedicated DSLR for astrophotography is Canon's 60Da (about $1660), but they do make other cameras that are cheaper.

They have a wide amount of support from 3rd party vendors for camera and shutter control. One of the easiest to use is Nebulosity -

I have a orion xx12 telescope and i am not really ready for the photography side of astronomy yet BUT my grandfather is absolutely set on buying me a camera for my scope so i have agreed to getting 1 but which kind is better a digital or a film camera and also which make is the best for this job

I'm 16 and my parents want to know what I want for my bday that's coming up, and i don't think im getting a car until I get a job, so I want to find these for a little less somewhere. Like under $500.

The fact is, to get one of these cameras, you should spend a little bit more (like 100$). You will need lenses, accessories, and memory (if you don't already have something adequate enough). Although, at just under 500 dollars, you can get this:

It doesn't include much (one single starter's lens), and don't get me wrong, it's still great, but definitely far from the best!

If you're looking for zoom, which most people do look for, you won't find some giant zoom range in lenses in your price range.

Personally, I think you'd be better off with a compact for the moment, develop your photography skills a bit more and stack up some more money; then buy one of these DLSRs...you won`t regret it!

The fact is, to get one of these cameras, you should spend a little bit more (like 100$). You will need lenses, accessories, and memory (if you don't already have something adequate enough). Although, at just under 500 dollars, you can get this:

Need help with what video camera I need!?

So I'm not an expert in video camera specs, or what I need and where to look. I like to edit, and shoot videos. I'm also not willing to spend $3000 on one of the new 2010-2012 model professional JVC, Panasonic or Sony video cameras, so I'm looking for a model around 2004-2009 that will only cost about $600-1200 (but more likely $800). I want a shotgun microphone attached, and a great focus feature. It can be used or new, but if it's used, it can't have any damage to the lens or to the parts or have any broken features. If you can't find me any models, could you tell me what I should be searching for? What keywords? Because when I search up something like "2008 Sony professional video camera" it gives me home camcorders or new models, or models that are worth like $3000 (because the posts were made at the time the cameras were released). I would much appreciate it if someone could help me out. Thanks :)

Canon PowerShot A1300 16.0 MP Digital Camera with 5x Digital Image Stabilized Zoom 28mm Wide-Angle Lens with 720p HD Video Recording Great camera for the price. Purchased the camera in May 2012 to shoot family events, friends ect. You could not ask for a better price vs performance camera. Very simple to use, excellent picture and video quality. I would suggest getting a cushioned camera case that includes the USB thumb drive reader for $10, the case is perfect for travel and storage when not in use. The USB reader is a great option when offloading the memory card.

I am trying to get into photography. I will basically be teaching myself the different aspects of camera settings and probably even the editing. I just want a new hobby that I can learn on my own with hands-on experience and reading a few articles and tips online, etc. So, for the professional and/or seasoned photographers: what type of camera should I invest in? I know cameras aren't cheap but nothing too expensive, and very user-friendly since I will basically just be learning as I go. Suggestions on cameras and other equipment/resources are appreciated!

Here are 3 DSLR cameras you should consider:

Sony SLT-A57 w/18-55mm zoom, $698.00. *

I checked the prices of a few advanced "bridge" cameras and their prices are right up there with a full-fledged DSLR so in my opinion a DSLR is a far better choice.

Regardless of which camera you buy you'll need to seriously read & study the Owner's Manual that comes with it.

You will also want to become more than just acquainted with these 4 components of photography: Light, Composition, Exposure and Depth of Field. Here are sites that will explain them to you:

Don't expect to learn all of this in one afternoon. It will take much, much longer than that for you to become knowledgeable but you will learn as you go. But first you have to be willing to take the time to actually study them.

Here is the secret:

Train yourself to actually THINK about Light, Composition, Exposure and Depth of Field BEFORE you release the shutter. The worst advice given in here goes something like this: "Just go out and shoot and shoot and shoot and shoot! Take hundreds of pictures! That's how you gain experience!" NO! it isn't unless all you want to do is take snapshots. Good photography requires thinking and if all you do is point & shoot point & shoot point & shoot then you aren't thinking. A chimpanzee could do that!

So train yourself to think about Light, Composition, Exposure and Depth of Field. Its far better to come home with 40 or 50 really good images than it is to come home with 300 mediocre snapshots and end up deleting 99% of them. The goal is quality, not quantity.

All of my examples were made because I was thinking about light, composition, exposure and depth of field. They were also made using one of my vintage Minolta 35mm film cameras. I shoot in Aperture Priority and my camera was on my tripod for these examples. Actually, my camera is seldom off my tripod but that's mostly because I shoot landscapes and nature.

THINK about Light.

THINK about Exposure.
THINK about Depth of field.

THEN release the shutter.
