Answer
People so often ask: "Which one is a good camera to buy?"
Here is my 10 cents on the subject:

Point & Shoot cameras are wonderfully handy because of their small size.
When light conditions are ideal, they even take really nice photos - all of them do.

However, they all DO have limitations - they don't do very well in low light situations (i.e. noisy photos, hard to avoid blur, etc). The little onboard flash is very harsh at close range, and doesn't reach very far.
Many of them have no manual functions, so you are limited to only very basic photos, you can't compensate for unusual situations, or do many fun "tricks" and special effects.
P&S's also suffer from frustrating shutterlag and many of them chew through batteries rather quickly.

However, if you're ok with all those limitations, then go ahead and pick one, most of them (the same type and same price range) are rather similar. Personally I would pick either a Canon or a Nikon, and would certainly stay away from Kodak.

A higher end P&S will give you more manual options and better quality. Many of those even give you the option of adding a proper flash (which makes a big difference to your flash photos).

Don't worry too much about megapixelsâ¦. there is a limit to how many pixels you can squash into a tiny P&S sensor before you actually LOSE quality rather than gain it.
Don't worry about digital zoom, in fact, don't EVER use it. It simply crops away pixels, i.e. destroys information. The only real zoom is optical.

Decide which features are important to you, and look for cameras that have that feature.
Then go compare a few models on www.dpreview.com .

The very best thing you can do for your success is to borrow some books and learn about photography. A bit of knowledge will make a much bigger difference to your photos than your choice of P&S camera can.

For what it's worth - if I was in the market for a P&S camera right now, my choice would be a Canon Powershot SX10 IS http://www.usa.canon.com/consumer/controller?act=ModelInfoAct&fcategoryid=144&modelid=17630

P.S. forget about your rule #5 - no camera can handle being shaken without blurring the photo.

Recommend a great P&S digital camera?

CFP

Replacing my Casio dropped one too many times. Need a P&S with minimal lag time to take great pix of the toddlers.
Thanks Selin5 for a terrific detailed answer, but my question is bit more precise. I am looking for the best point and shoot with least amount of shutter lag, although probably all p&s's have this to some extent. I have researched cameras online extensively, but hard to get visibility to this issue, unless I am just looking in the wrong place.

Olympus VS Canon digital camera?

Flaca

I had asked a previous question: Is 8.0 megapixel better than 14?

The answers were pretty much what i researched so I thought I'd add the actual cameras.

I have an Olympus FE-280-8megapixle. I luv taking my camera when I go places like functions and outings w friends etc. Because I like taking pics., for my b'day I was given a Canon SD780 12megapixel (thought is was 14lol) and was told I would get MUCH clearer pics etc. But after the mixed messages, I'm thinking I should keep my Olympus and return the Canon and spend the $ on something else...:)

What do you think and what would you do?

Answer
as I said On Your last question Its not all about the megapixels. But that doesn't mean the twelve megapixel canon is worse. It has to do wit h the overall build of the camera. I looked up both of the cameras and it seems like the Olympus is a better camera

What was the feature that provided low light / infrared on a Lumix digital camera?

canon digital camera 14 megapixel on : Canon EOS 60D 18MP DSLR Camera, Nikon D3100 14MP Digital SLR Camera ...

Pureiron

I saw some photos from a Lumix digital camera taken in very low light (a bar). They were black and white, with almost an infrared feeling to them, and sharp (not that grainy).

Can anyone tell me which model might be able to do that, or what the feature is that allows this on a point and shoot?

Thanks.

I think you should go with Canon PowerShot SD1400IS 14.1 MP Digital Camera

What is the best digital camera out there?

Shroomy

I am looking for a really good digital camera that an amateur like myself can easily use.
I prefer something from Canon, Nikon, or Samsung, but I'm not too picky about the brand.
The price doesn't matter as long as it's not too expensive.
It needs to be something that doesn't die right away, and I would like it to be pretty small.

Thanks!

What megapixel is good enough for a digital camera?

canon digital camera 14 megapixel on Buy Canon PowerShot SD1400IS 14.1 MP Digital Camera Best Price | PRLog
canon digital camera 14 megapixel image

Jay Pee

We're planning to buy a digital camera.. And i just saw this cheap digital camera called "Polaroid Q20 14.0 MP" Is 14 Megapixels perfect for even taking pictures at night?

Answer
Avoid "cheap" cameras. First of all, there a few things you seem to be misinformed about here:
Megapixels do not really matter unless you are making large, poster size prints, for example 11x14 and up. 14 Megapixels is more than enough for any average camera user. Secondly, megapixels have no effect on image quality or how the camera takes pictures "at night". NO camera takes good pictures at night without good lighting- cameras rely on light to form a picture. The only thing megapixels effect is the size of the image in pixels.
Also, stay away from polaroid cameras. Get a Nikon, Canon, or Fujifilm.

I am thinking about getting a digital camera or SLR camera. Which one do you think is better?

Ayyyy

I am opening up handmade clothes website. I need a camera that takes very good quailty picture.

SLR Camera
1. Canon - EOS Digital Rebel XS 10.1-Megapixel Digital SLR Camera
2. Sony - A390 14.2-Megapixel Digital SLR Camera

Digital Camera
1.Canon - PowerShot SX30IS 14.0-Megapixel Digital Camera
2.Sony - Cyber-Shot 14.1-Megapixel Digital Camera

Answer
You seem to be familiar with the difference between the 2 types of cameras, so I'd imagine you also are aware of the kind of shots you will want. Personally, I'd go For the Canon Rebel. If you haven't already be sure to check the reviews & prices on Amazon before making a choice. The 2011 models are just starting to be released now & you can get some great deals on the older models. The XS isn't the most current model out now for Canon. The T3i was released very recently it has 18 megapixels & a price to match. Whatever you get be certain that it allows you to expand for the future with additional lenses & accessories.

The digital SLRs or Dslrs, as they are known will provide plenty of future flexibility. The digital units or point & shoot cameras, you mention are what you will live with, since the lens they come with is the only lens they'll ever have.
