which is better? canon EOS 1000D digital SLR camera or 500D?

foolscap90

my friend has the 1000D, but today another friend told me that the 500D is good. i need one with a fast shutter speed, because i mainly take action shots.

Answer
If it is action shots you are after then I would avoid any of the amateur 'Rebel' series of Canon bodies. For the price of the 500D you can buy a Canon 40D. I use one myself and after upgrading from a 350D (which I loved) I could never go back to the Rebel series.

The 40D has a very fast frame rate (6.5f/s), better AF system, faster AF system, much better build quality (magnesium alloy body and larger grip), larger and brighter pentaprism viewfinder compared to the tiny dark pentamirror viewfinders in the 1000D/500D bodies, higher ISO settings, faster shutter speeds, twice the battery life, etc etc...

I could go on, but I am sure you get the idea. Forget the entry level amateur bodies, if it is speed you are after then there is no doubt that you are better off with a semi-pro 40D. And if you are looking at a 500D (I would seriously not bother with this camera) then you can certainly afford a 40D.

Go into a store, handle them all and you will see exactly what I mean.

+++++++

Additional..

Frames Per Second

1000D - 3 f/s
500D - 3.4 f/s

40D - 6.5 f/s

Max Shutter Speed

1000D - 1/4000 s
500D - 1/4000 s

40D - 1/8000 s

Price (body) (UK Jessops)

1000D - £349
500D - £789

40D - £599

So you have a choice.. a plastic bodied, slower amateur entry level body with a small viewfinder and less spec. Or a far better Semi pro model with far better specs and built for speed (this body was made for action shots)

I will leave the choice up to you, it seems obvious to me, hell I would rather have a 20D than a 500D, just for the ergonomics and large viewfinder alone.

which CANON 550D deal should i buy?

AliceMayPr

i've done my research and im a keen amateur photographer, i've seen two deals and would like your advice on which deal is worth while.

when i get my camera, i will be doing sports photography so a zoom lens is needed, is the deal from tescos worth that extra bit of money, rather than having to buy a separate lens with the Jessops deal?

Jessops
Canon EOS 550D with 18-55mm IS Lens
http://www.jessops.com/online.store/products/77142/show.html

Tescos
Canon EOS 550D Digital SLR Camera (inc 18-135 mm f/3.5-5.6 IS Lens Kit)
http://direct.tesco.com/q/R.208-0023.aspx

Answer
What kind of sports? are you talking at night under the lights? or full light of day?
The zoom on the 18-135 is not much zoom compared to most point and shoot cameras. It's definitely a lot more than the 18-55, but...
I shoot sports with a 70-200 f/2.8 and it's not all that much zoom from where I am at on the sidelines of a football field. It is too much for indoor basketball though.
If you are shooting in the full light of day that 18-135 will be ok. I'd look for the 55-250 instead if possible.
If you are shooting at night under the lights or indoors? None of them are going to be all that hot and you will need a flash or better lens.
That jessops price for the T3i converts to roughly $976 USD. that's kind of high. I know Adorama and B&H ship to the UK (assuming that is where you are) It's more than $100 USD less or roughly 61pounds. And that is the kit WITH a memory card, extra battery and camera bag. http://www.adorama.com/ICAT3IKA.html For the same price you are paying you can get the T3i with both the kit lens and the 55-250 lens at adorama: http://www.adorama.com/ICAT3IKL1.html

The tesco's link converts to roughly $1300 USD. That same kit runs $1050 or about 644pounds.
http://www.adorama.com/ICAT3IK2.html
Even with shipping on the kits it's a savings over what you are paying there! I'd go for the first kit from adorama if I were you.

right now i have this camera (Canon PowerShot SX200 IS) : http://www.canon.co.uk/For_Home/Product_Finder/Cameras/Digital_Camera/PowerShot/PowerShot_SX200_IS/

but i want to buy an slr camera and was looking at these two:
1) Nikon D3000 with a VR lens- http://www.jessops.com/online.store/products/76463/show.html?cm_vc=PPZ1

or

2)Canon EOS 1000D + 18-55mm lens (Not VR- i think :/) http://www.jessops.com/online.store/products/75886/show.html

any advice for a beginner?

Answer
I own and recommend the 1000D for its superb photos and build. I've added some lenses but my favorite is my Canon 28-200 for its quick, sharp, accurate focus and metering. This package will run about $1,000.

This is my camera, you're no doubt familiar with this.

Where can I find a good digital photo printers in London?

canon digital camera jessops on Canon Powershot G12 Digital Compact Camera - 4342B010AA - Jessops ...
canon digital camera jessops image

mouse_spin

I have a digital photo I wanted printed, taken on an Canon EOS model camera. The print is for my Dad for his Birthday, and I want it too look good.

I have used the "digital printing services" in places like Jessops and Boots for other photos, however I find they often get the levels wrong, often too dark, or the colours are slighty out. So I'm looking for a professional printers who can print the photo as it looks.

Any help or suggestion on places to try would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!

Answer
Look in your phone book and call shops offering custom printing. Tell them what you want. Take a reference print in and ask them to match it.

Which is the best digital Camera around £150?

Maddy

I am looking for the digital Camera which has nice zoom and nice picture and video quality. Thinking of Canon SX 210 which £149 from Jessops. But not sure is there any other camera which is better than this in this price range.Or I buy this camera. Confuse!!!!!!!!!!!

Answer
âThe S2950 packs plenty of features, such as an electronic viewfinder, manual controls and large optical zoom which all combine to take pleasing pictures with ease. Noise performance above IS0400 isnât great and the zoom on videos is a let down. Overall the S2950 is a good introduction to compacts with large zooms or those who want an SLR style camera without the bulky size and bag of lenses all at a much lower price.â

What is the best Digital SLR I can buy for under a £1000?

Oil & Wate

I want a digital camera that would be suitable for use as a pro photographer?

Answer
The Nikon D300 and Canon 5D are both out of your reach - and that's just for the body.

For image quality, the lens is of greater importance than the body anyway. Focus (pardon the pun) on that first. For general use, and on a budget, I usually recommend the Tamron 17-50mm f/2.8. This lens costs £350. The image quality is almost the same as with the vastly more expensive Canon/ Nikon 17-55mm f/2.8 lenses. The Tamron version just doesn't focus quite as fast, and it's not built to the same high standards (the Nikon version has a metal lens barrel & weather sealing, etc.; the Canon version has Image Stabilization.) Tamron makes lenses for all major camera brands, so you can get one for whatever body you select.

A Nikon D80 costs £480, and a Canon 450D costs £460 (for just the body, prices from Jessops). Try them both in a camera shop and take your pick - they are both excellent. You can find cheaper bodies, even from Nikon and Canon, but I wouldn't recommend them. With cheaper Nikon bodies for example, you won't be able to auto-focus with fixed focal length lenses (if you decide to add one to your collection at a later point.) Other camera brands also produce good entry level bodies, but if you want to start a pro kit, start with a brand that has a pro line of gear. With Pentax, Sony, Olympus, etc, you will eventually run out of upgrade options.

So with a decent lens and an entry level body you´re already up to £820. Add a quality UV filter to protect your lens (B+W and Hoya are excellent), 2 memory cards (for example Sandisk Extreme lll, 2 GB), a spare battery, a cheap card reader, and a lens cleaning kit, and you´ll be very close to £1000.

If you don´t already have image editing software, consider Adobe Photoshop Elements. It´s inexpensive and it does a very decent job.

If you were hoping to include additional lenses, filters, a tripod, an external flash, a camera bag, etc. all for under £1000, you´re out of luck. You would have to economize on the body and main lens, as well as get cheap extras, and as a result you would end up with a bag full of amateurish gear.

What is the cheapest European country to buy Canon Lenses?

James C

I'm Going on a two week road trip around Europe and im looking to buy a Canon 28mm ef F/1.8 usm lens.Which would be the cheapest Country to get it in or is it the same roughly everywhere?

Answer
Look for a used copy before you leave. This is a great lens to have for the entire road trip. You won't find it sold for less retail, and you probably won't find a used copy at all during your 2 week trip.

If you can't find one, consider the Sigma 30mm f/1.4. It's the same price as the Canon and half a stop faster. The Sigma is a bit soft towards the edges, but otherwise very good - sharp in the center, fast AF, etc. For night time street photography, I'd probably prefer this lens. (I personally use a 50mm f/1.4 for this and a 17-55mm f/2.8 for just about everything else.)

If you live in the USA, forget about buying gear in Europe. A used Canon 28 f/1.8 in mint condition goes for $375 (craigslist.org in NYC) and retail it's $420 (bhphotovideo.com). In most of Europe, expect to pay 390 Euros retail (kamera-express.nl - I picked a Dutch website because I live in Holland). This translates to $610. Prices in the UK are a bit higher still: there you can expect to pay 325 Pounds (jessops.com), which works out to $645.

If you're shooting digital, also bring a laptop or stock up on memory cards before you leave. Two weeks is a very short time - you don't want to waste any of it in camera shops, waiting for your pictures to transfer to DVDs.

---
Nathan, the thumbs-down wasn't mine. Although... you know, I can't actually think of too many department stores that carry the Canon 28mm f/1.8.

Canon camera case......which one fits?

Dollybird

Hi, I recently bought the following camera :Canon IXUS 117 HS Digital Camera in Black - Exclusive to Jessops

And I am now rtying to find a suitable case. any sugeestions would be good, I have seen the following on amazon but just don't know which one would fit best & really don't want to waste time & money by ordering the wrong one again & again.

Canon DCC-1200 Soft Case for IXUS 130, Digital IXUS 120 IS & IXUS 100 IS

Acme Made Antik Pillow Case For Cameras - Wet Purple

Canon DCC-60 Soft Leather Case for IXUS 105, Digital IXUS 95 IS & IXUS 90 IS

New Black Leather case with Pouch for Canon IXUS 300 210 200 130 120 110 100 105 95 IS

Thank you

Answer
The best thing to do is take the camera into your local camera shop and see what they have that fits it properly.

The 117HS (according to Jessops) is 93.1mm x 55.8mm x 19.9mm (3.67"x2.2"x0.78"), you could compare those dimensions to some of the other cameras that you listed to see if they are comparable.
