I want it to have really good quality for pictures, I don't really care much about videos.

Also if you could could you list about how much it would cost me?
I live in canada.

Answer
The main thing for quality is MP (Mega pixels).

The higher the mega pixels, the higher the image quality.

Go to a Best Buy or Future Shop and look for the highest mega pixel camera. 10-12 mega pixel is really good, anything above that is like professional grade. The cameras with the large, long lens, are made for professional photography (you can find a 12 MP camera without the large lens).

Next thing, make sure it's a brand you trust. Don't get a brand that you think will break down easily.

Brands I suggest:
-Sony (best, in my opinion)
-Kodak (this company has a profession in photography)
-Canon (sort of a "lower-grade" Sony)
-Samsung (has many, MANY great reliable products)
-Nikon (great overall)
-Casio (to a certain extent)

Next is price. Make sure you look to see you're getting the best deal for what you need. If you have a choice, say between a Sony 12 MP camera for $200, and a Casio 12 MP camera for $100, don't just straight up get the Sony because it's more expensive. Make sure you like it, and it's a REAL need to spend that extra $100. If the Casio works for you, then get it and save $100. Be smart...

What is the best kind of camera to buy- especially for a photographer?

Well, i want to be a photographer just for fun! i don't want to make a career out of it- no way.. but i want to make it a hobby.. i don't really want to go to classes for it.. i just want a suitable camera.. i mean, i have had experience with film and photography... but i want to do something more personal for myself.
thanks for your answers i appreciate them.. but i don't know much about cameras to begin with.. that's why i'm asking.. like i'm not sure what's the best type to get.. okay, i'm someone who just wants to go out and take a pic.. like always have a camera on me.. like those portable ones, you know? but my pockets don't run deep... soo.. i don't have enough money either.. well, if you have any further suggestions please suggest them to me.. help a sister out

I agree with the suggestions that you should consider a larger camera, such as an SLR design. There are also many mid-level EVF (electronic view finder) design cameras that are excellent and may be just the thing for some one like yourself who wants a serious camera - but not too serious!

Consider the links below to Popular Photography magazine. One is their list of "digital super-zoom" cameras; all-in-one designs with excellent picture quality, advanced features and powerful lenses.

The Editor's Choice is for the Olympus SP-550-UZ.

If you like the idea of an SLR design with the ability to change lenses, there are many choices. The entry-level Nikon D40, D40x and Canon Rebel XT are good choices to consider. Sony, Pentax and Olympus should also be on your list of brands to check out.

Do you have any friends with SLR cameras? If they have a collection of lenses you could borrow from, that would be a great way to start!
