canon digital camera 350d image
Q. I am looking for a digital camera to use as a photography beginner. I'm looking for something just above your regular run-of-the-mill snapshot-type camera, but nothing in the thousands of dollars.
Any advice you can give to this photography newbie is appreciated.

Well, I'm assuming you would buy a camera under $1000. If so, I would recommend a digital SLR. If you're taking up photography as a serious hobby, you will eventually buy a DSLR later on. The digital point & shoot (P&S) cameras are good for casual photo taking (parties, occasions, etc.) and known for their simplicity and small size. But once you learn more about basic photography and the features on a DSLR, you'll be able to take far better photos that are not obtainable on a P&S camera.
With that said, if you want an affordable DSLR, there's 2 to choose from that I recommend:
Nikon D50 and Canon EOS 350D
The Nikon is more affordable at under $700, and the Canon is under $800. All depending on what you want. Just get the basic lens and a high capacity memory card, I suggest 1GB. You can still take really good pictures even if you're a beginner and don't utilize the camera to it's full capacity, because there are a few auto options. But when you're ready, you'll have the right camera to take awesome photos.

What digital camera do you recommend for a high school photography class?
E.C.
I have photography this semester, and the teacher would like us to provide digital cameras with at least 8MP, as well as being DSLR.
I'm going to be shooting a lot of sports, as I'm on yearbook as well, and I'd like to keep it under $200 if at all possible. I'd like something that would last for a decent length of time, as well. Any help would be appreciated :)

Your options are limited but it is possible. One recommendation (possibly the ONLY one) is a Canon XT (350D) with kit 18-55mm lens.
I am from the UK and I have seen these bodies and lenses sell for less than the $200 equivalent in £'s.
Here is an auction in the US I have just found as an example..
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Canon-EOS-Digital-Rebel-XT-8-0-MP-Digital-SLR-/150656356509?pt=Digital_Cameras&hash=item2313d1909d
and here is one that has ended and is just slightly over your budget..

Up your budget to $250 and you will certainly get this camera and lens if you try hard enough. And it is also a fine camera, I used to own one.
