Answer
I'm in the same position as you. From the research I've been doing I highly recommend a Digital Single lens reflex camera (DSLR) Their used by professionals and take very high quality pictures. What makes a DSLR camera different from a compact digital camera is that it's just like one camera using several different lenses, with a non SLR camera the user has to match the angle of view of the "taking" lens with that of the "viewing" lens which can be difficult. The SLR camera makes this whole process much more easier.
Now you have to find which brand or model you want which can be hard because there are so many model's out there that equally good. Two of the most popular brands are Canon and Nikon. Their both Extremely high in quality and are used by professionals. Both brands will give you high quality pictures and both have pretty much the same results.
These DSLR camera's are very good for beginners:
Nikon 3100, 3000, 3500
from reveiws i'v read the 3100 is probably the best out of these 3, heres a link to it
http://www.nikon.ca/en/Product.aspx?m=17310&disp=Overview
Canon Rebel T2i, T1i, Xsi, Xs
and the the T2i is probably the best out of these 4

Also, go out and try these camera's first, so you can get a feel of how they work

Best camera for an amateur street photographer?
hollyyy
Answer
As a street photographer you want something small and discrete. Something that doesnt stand out and keeps you conspicious.
if a camera phone had the optical quality, it would be the ideal street photographers camera. You always have it with you and it is so small you can get almost into anywhere. The only problem with it is that the optics lead to very poor quality pictures that cant really be enlarged.
since the early 30s leicas were the industry standard. They were small. They were portable. They were quiet.
Choices.
The modern leica is the leica M9. If you want something a little cheaper. The leica M8.2 is much cheaper. If you are willing to shopt film, you will have more options. From the class M3 to m7. Alternatively there is the voigtlander bessa series which are a wonderfully cheaper alternative (which is also what i own - voightlander bessa r3m). other digital options get a bit bigger. Te entry level digital slrs. Canon 550d or nikon 3100.
If none of the above suggestions float your boat, you have to think about the micro four thirds crowd. Olympus pen or pansonic gf1
