What do you think should I buy? Canon 60D or 7D?

I know the basics of photography but I'm still in the learning process. I also want to try out filming. I checked the prices and 7D is more expensive so I figured it's better. But I was thinking if it's better if I buy the 60D since I'm still an amateur. I know very little and I can't decide. What do you guys think?

I've recently had the same decision to make. I have used both cameras, but decided to buy the 60D for my own use. My main reasons:

- 60D is far newer... newer technology is always good in my mind.
- 60D isn't weather proof like the 7D - but will you get your camera wet anyway?
- The 7D is getting old and is due to be replaced with a new model.
- Image and video quality is much the same between the two cameras.
- They say the 7D is better for video because it has dual processors, but I've been using the 60D for video with no processing speed problems whatsoever.
- 60D has the flip out screen - which I have on occasion found useful.
- 60D is cheaper!

Tripod, spare battery, camera bag. No need to buy additional lenses at this stage until you've exhausted what you can do with the kit lens. Ditto filters - hold off until you know what you need. If you have to ask - you don't need them. The only filters you'll likely need are for landscapes and those would be a circular polariser, ND and grad ND filters.

Buy every single piece of L lens that Canon makes. They are the best of the best.

Buying a DSLR on a tight budget is problematic, because nobody really tells you just how much other gear you will need/want on top of the camera.

Even if/when you DO find a DSLR plus lens in your price range, there will always be way more expenses ahead.

You'll want and/or need a few other things such as tripod, filters, a bag, sensor cleaning gear, a second battery, memory cards, perhaps a remote shutter release etc.

That's just the small stuff - I can guarantee you that you'll also want more lenses. You'll probably buy cheap ones at first, then regret that, then start saving for the good quality ones, instead.
You'll also want a decent flash some day.

See how that list just goes on and on?
Owning a DSLR isn't cheap - at least not until you have built up a nice stash of gear. When you look at an advertised kit price, you do NOT see all the other gear that need/want with it.

Just some food for thought........ I'm not trying to talk you out of this, just trying to be helpful in case you haven't thought about all this yet.

Canon 60D Camera Purchase Questions?

Tomorrow, I plan on purchasing a Canon 60D (or at least I'm pretty sure) as an upgrade from my current bridge camera. However, I've got a few questions regarding lenses and accessories.

1) I can buy a kit with either the 18-135mm f3.5/5.6 IS lens or the 18-200mm f3.5/5.6 IS lens. From the little I've read, it sounds as though the 18-135mm lens is better. What do you think? Would it be better off just buying a body and going from there? I'd be interested primarily in travel and landscape/nature photography.

2) Is the 60D really worth the extra money over the T3i? I've held both, and really liked the feel of the 60D more, but is it worth the price difference? Would it make sense to buy the T3i or even a D5100 and save the extra money for a lens?

3) How is the video? I've done some searching for this, because I'll be using the camera quite a bit for my IB Film class.

If you can be any help, or if you could just give me your own opinions, I'd appreciate it. Thanks!

If you prefer Canon, buy the T3i so you have more $$$ to put towards a nice lens. The D5100 & D7000 have much better sensors than the T3i & 60D. Neither the 18-135 or 18-200 are particularly great... If you'll manily be recording video, you should just buy a good-quality HD camcorder such as the Canon Vixia HF G10.

If you are making movies adult or otherwise, you are wasting your money! The Canon EOS 60d is a still camera primarly designed for still (not moving objects-people, scene's,etc.) You definitly need a camcorder. Which one I have no idea, as I am a still camera professional. You will get the results you want in terms of a camcorder (they aren't called movie cameras anymore) in the "camcorder" section of Yahoo answers.

Remember the sensors for still cameras cannot record the long scenes of say love-making. You need the camcorder sensor for that.

I purchased a Pentax Kx DSLR. ALthough I have loved Canon's for many years, I don't care for the multiple focusing squares in the viewfinder. That is why handling a camera before you purchase is so important. It has got to be comfortable, other wise forget it. I also chose the Pentax Kx because I got rid of all my film equipment years ago and was starting fresh. I do not do as much work as I am retired. So the lens that came with the camera and a Tamron18mm-200mm fill my needs.

What is a good starter lens for the Canon 60D for videography purposes?

I just bought the Canon 60D mostly for videography purposes. I am looking to purchase a lens with great wide angle and zoom capabilities. I understand I will have to eventually buy more than one, but I'm looking for one that is well rounded in both departments.

EVERY person filming or taking pictures NEEDS a good PRIME lens such as a 50mm. A 50mm lens can be found for as little as $120 for a f/1.8, I personally would go for a f/1.4 which is about $200 more, there is really only two differences in the 1.8 and the 1.4; build quality and the F stop which is the aperture. I don't know if you know anything about aperture but the lower the F number the lower light you can shoot in (without cranking up ISO). I know you said you want a zoom lens, but at $120 for a 50mm I thought it would be a great addition to your lens collection allowing you to shoot in low light situations. Now a REALLY GOOD lens that is wide angle and zooms (a little bit) is the 17-40mm this is an L lens which stands for Luxury (and are denoted by the red ring on the barrel). The barrel of Canon L lenses are generally made from metal and the optics are superb. This lens isn't too expensive but it will run you a good $800 (these lenses are built like tanks, most are water-resistant, but I'd advise checking out your choice of L lens to see if you can have it out in a light rain). My advice to you is to search the website of your local camera store and look at the selection of lenses, this way you know your store either has the lens in stock, or you know they can get it in stock. Also, going to your local camera store and talking with someone who works there could be very beneficial, not only will they tell you a good lens for your needs, but you could learn some things on how to take AMAZING pictures and video.
