Buying a digital camera advice?

i'm looking to buy my first digital camera ; i will only really be using it for snapshots however i would like these pictures to be of decent quality. My budget is around £200 / $300 , although i am able to stretch over this a little. As well as a camera that takes photos of a decent quality i'd like one that isn't heavy to carry around and is relatively easy to use.

The main problem with new point n shoots is theyâve abandoned all manual user settings. The auto functions can be fooled shooting different subjects in different lighting even for those snapshots. I see a lot of complaints here and many issues can be traced to someone expecting more than a point n shoot can deliver. The cameras Ive recommended all have the option of some level of manual control to help in difficult conditions.

Fujifilm S2000HD £160. Very easy full auto mode plus the options of full manual exposure and focus. Not a pocket size point n shoot but exceptional features in a compact size.

The announcement caps off a year of production woes for the Japanese company. The affected camera models are the DSC-F88, DSC-M1, DSC-T1, DSC-T11, DSC-T3, DSC-T33, DSC-U40 and DSC-U50. Sony will repair faulty cameras free of charge.

The HX1, SX30IS and HS10 are not dSLRs. Among the three I would prefer the Sony, easy to use, more features.

Sony's dSLR line is the three-digit alpha (a290, a330, etc.). Two-digit alphas are SLT cameras (not dSLRs). Their point-and-shoot lineup has the Cybershot label.

Canon's dSLR line is the EOS-d (1D, 350D, etc.). Canon has two point-and-shoot lines, the more complicated Powershot and the simpler Ixus.

Fujifilm cameras are all Finepix. Their dSLRs are under the S Pro series (S1, S5, etc.) which is currently discontinued.

You really need a fully adjustable camera for "photography". Photography implies that you want to control everything about the images you are shooting and for that you will need either a good used 35 mm SLR or a dSLR camera.

A beginner is a beginner. It does not matter if you are 16 or 60, female or male. They all work the same and are NOT gender specific nor does it matter the age of the user

Nikon and Canon are the most plentiful of all the used cameras, so look for a 35 mm SLR with lens for less than £70.

You may not find a dSLR for less than £152 but maybe close to that. Look for a camera like the Nikon D40 or D60 with 18-55 mm lens or a Canon XT with the same lens.

Is Sony giving Canon and Nikon a run for their money?

Popular Photography's 2011 camera of the year is the Nex-7 and the article says that its closest competition among the runners up was the a77. Last year the top spot went to the a55. It seems IMO that Sony is really coming out with innovations and listening to what consumers want, plus they are focusing more on the consumer and pro-sumer models which is where the biggest market is right now and which will continue to grow as digital camera prices drop.

Dansy, until Sony over take (or take over) Nikon (at the current rate of market share growth that will be in around 6 to 7 years!) you'll never convince people. You will convince them when you use your DSLT to shoot flawless video, or just get the High Speed Sync to work flawlessly off camera with nothing other than the camera and flash unit.

Regards Sony making inroads into non-DSLR cameras, they already account for almost 90% of the sensors used in such cameras (most Nikon's and even some Canon's). *This figure may include the sensor units in mobile phones.

There's a lot more cross-fertilization of ideas among the manufacturers than the users often think. One of Sony's new sensors relies on cross patenting with Fujifilm, Sigma, and Kodak.

** I'm a trained technologist, and now that Sony has a decent range of lenses for their crop sensor cameras I honestly think they are a better starting point than Canon and Nikon. I will admit if Sony want to be take seriously for full frame cameras they really need to work on the lens range for that segment.

Unless you have some basic knowledge about photography - exposure, composition, light - don't expect an $800.00 DSLR to perform any better than a $100.00 point & shoot digicam.

However, if you're willing to devote the time to actually learning about photography, first by reading & studying the Owner's Manual for the camera and then by taking classes or utilizing the sites I list then I'd suggest a serious look at the Sony SLT A55.

The Sony SLT A55 features Sony's Translucent Mirror Technology which allows for full-time continuous auto focus whether you're shooting still pictures or 1080/60i HD video. This technology also allows shooting at 10fps (frames per second). The SLT A55 also gives you 2D or 3D Sweep Panorama and in-camera HDR photography. It also has a built-in GPS.

The SLT A55 uses the legacy Minolta Maxxum "A" lens mount which means you have access to all those previously owned Maxxum AF lenses made since 1985. The SLT A55 has a focusing motor in the camera body so any "A" mount auto focus lens ever made will auto focus on it as they should. The A55 also has Sony's version of Image Stabilization in the camera body so any lens used becomes, in effect, an IS lens.

I'd be rather leery of taking advice from someone suggesting a camera brand when they can't even spell the brand name correctly. Its spelled "Canon" when discussing camera brands and "cannon" when discussing weapons of war.

there are some factors I'm keeping in mind:
1. I have a very fast-paced lifestyle, I'm always out and about so I need something that can withstand a lot!!
2. It doesn't have to be anything fancy, just as long as it takes good quality pictures i'm happy! ; )

Stay away from Kodaks. Their quality has been dropping dramatically inthe past few years.
Look to Nikon, their S series. My Nikon S3 is great for on the go photos. The newest version similar to my camera is the S9. It's easy to use (easier than the Kodaks, Canons or Sonys) and has a help feature built into the camera. It has the best red-eye reduction in the industry (even if you don't select the Red-Eye Reduction Flash)

And for durability:
A) Get a padded camera case. NONE of the small point & shoot digital cameras are going to survive too much banging around if they're naked.
B) Buy your camera from a Ritz or Wolf Camera and get their Performance Guarantee. Even if you shattered your camera once every six months and needed a complete replacement, Ritz/Wolf's Performance Guarantee will cover EVERYTHING except fire or disappeaance (yes,that means water damage, too). Worst case scenario with their guarantee is that they'll give you the origianl purchase price of the camera back as store creditifthey can't fix or replace your camera, within five years. My Nikon S3 was $299 when I bought it about 12 months ago. It was listed at $199.99 on clearance. In 2011, my S3 will STILL be worth $299.
