Please give details as to why one is better than the other. I want clear crisp photos, manual controls for playing with, great zoom and ease of use. I would probably use auto most often but not always. I'm going on a trip and need a good camera this time around. Sorry to tell you this, but generally speaking it is rarely the camera that is to blame for bad images.

You can put a fantastic professional camera in the wrong hands, and it will take lousy photos. A good photographer can coax great photos out of even the simplest cameras.

If you borrow a few books on photography and watch a bunch of tutorials, you will learn a lot.
With some knowledge, you WILL take much better photos and you will learn to overcome (or at least realize) whatever limitations your camera has.

Then there is the issue of using special effects in camera.... the short answer is:

DON'T DO IT !

Imagine if you just happen to take the best photo you ever took - surely you would want to have it in all its glory, right?

Always set your camera to biggest size, best quality (and to color).

That way, you start with the best possible photo as your original.

Then you make a copy and edit it to your heart's content.
You have much better control over any editing on your computer, even something as simple as b&w will look MUCH better when it was processed properly instead of in camera.
You can do all sorts of things to it PLUS you get to keep your original.

well i joined deviant art a while back and looking at all the photography there made me want to learn how. right now i have a mediocre camera but i don't like taking pix with it; it has a P and M mode but it was obviously designed for point-and-shoot purposes, and my dad got this amazing camera for christmas it's so great i'm not really sure what it's called but the strap says Canon EOS Digital. the features i like the most are the manual focus and zoom. the problem is i'm too young for a job and i want to get the camera by like september. so i calculated that if i make the purchase in september i will have roughly $280..that doesn't go far towards a camera :( but there's a small possibility that i can get another few hundred, but i'm really not sure. i could also maybe borrow half the money from my parents; i've done that before. so with the price range being between $300 and $650 dollars, what do you all reccommend? (ps i want it to be digital)

Many of the new cameras come with only an LCD screen. Would suggest that you find one that also has an optical view finder because the LCD screen is almost impossible to see in bright sun.

Check replacement battery prices when buying a new camera. Some Lithium batteries cost almost as much as the camera and may be only good for 200 shots between charges.

Higher mega pixels may not really be the best thing to look for. It is more expensive, takes longer to process, and may not be needed unless you are making a really large picture or blowing up a small part of a picture. Maximum print size for a 3 mega pixel setting is 8 x 10 inches.

im thinking about getting the Canon PowerShot A495 10.0 Megapixel Digital Camera for my birthday and i want it to know if it works with windows moviemaker(im not converting all that file stuff) and is it good quality for youtube videos?( i make videos of beyblade battles on youtube.)

Most of Canon's newer model cameras, particularly the ones that record movies in HD or Full HD, only record movies in Quicktime MOV (H.264). This file type is NOT compatible with Windows Movie Maker.

However, the A495, being the entry level model it is, does actually record movies in the AVI format...which is fully compatible with Movie Maker.

Movies are only recorded in a standard VGA resolution of 640x480...not HD or Full HD.

Here is an excerpt from the official press release...
"In addition to high-quality images, both the PowerShot A495 and the PowerShot A490 are able to capture video at VGA resolution with sound. Both also feature a YouTube⢠upload function in the supplied software package â providing the capacity to log-in and upload directly from the camera to the Internet via a computer. I want a camera that is about or more 8 megapixels, high resolution, video mode, zoom lens, and i want to be able to see what i am taking a picture of at night through the screen... and on top of that i would love it if it were touchscreen... can anyone help me by letting me know what cameras can possibly have all of these features.. thanks!
