I'm trying to pick out a new lens for my Canon 7D digital camera. Any suggestions?

I mainly take portrait and landscape shots. I am looking for a lens that works exceptionally well in low-light. I'm still learning how to use this beast of a camera so I want a lens that is easy to use. I would like to keep it under 1,000.00 and prefer it to not be super heavy. The camera already weighs enough.

We are going to Europe in a couple of months and I would like to take pictures of architecture but also of my family (portrait).

Any input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
Also a fast, accurate, and quiet focus is important to me. Thanks!

Answer
Low light kings are the primes. So you have the 50mm f1.4 or 1.8, the 35mm f2, and the 85mm f1.8. These lens are super fast, and are great for landscape, and portraits. They're all rounder lens, suitable for a majority of situations. The zoom might be annoying, but you can carry another one if you need. The 35mm seems suitable for travel photography, maybe carry a zoom with you.

The 35mm is only $290 on amazon, so you might be able to buy a second lens.

The second lens I recommend is an "L" series lens, Canon EF 17-40mm f/4L, this is a beautiful lens, you can go from super wide to partial zoom, this is a heavy duty lens, so it might bother you while walking around.

If you want, you can get this and forget about the 35mm, and get a 85mm instead. So you have a 17-40 and an 85mm, both might be a little more than $1000.

Carrying a zoom, is better than carrying two primes. Do a little research and you will find the right one!

-Hope this helps.

Please help me in selection of good semi-professional digital camera?

I would like to have camera experts opinion in suggesting me a digital camera among the below three. ( suggestion of any camera model better than the below three is much appreciated :-) )

Got this list from many searches along with reviews.

Budget is <= Rs.15k

1.Canon PowerShot SX160 IS - Maximum shutter speed 1/3200 attracts me here
2.Sony Cyber-shot DSC-HX10V - 18.2 MP and Exmor R CMOS sensor
3.Fujifilm FinePix S4500 - Works good in manual mode

I am just going to start my photography ( much of nature , landscapes ) hobby with not a SLR but at least need a semi-professional camera.

Please suggest me a best one to use long time.

Answer
You have no semi pro cameras on your list.

The models you listed are just cheap compact cameras. Don't be fooled by the appearance on the outside, all of these cameras use tiny, cheap image sensors and optics like any other compact camera.

here are four examples of semi pro cameras.

Canon's 7D, Nikon's D7000, Sony's A77 and from Pentax the K5 II.

All the cameras you listed have poor image quality, especially in low light so if that's all you can afford, just pick the one with the features you want most, honestly no single one stands out or beats the others with better image quality.

Which Canon digital camera model is the best for amateur photographers!?

Hez H

I would like to buy a Canon camera, not a big professional one, I would also like to know which model gives the best picture quality as well as practical one. Thanks.

Answer
unless you care about brand that much, I wouldn't recommend canon. You're paying more for brand name. Go to best buy and check out Nikon and Sony. Those two brands have Cameras equal and better quality that canon and they're not overpriced. Sony has more high quality compact cameras where Nikon has more larger ones and you can add different lenses if you would like. If you're really set on getting a canon, get the canon EOS 7d slr. It's a nice camera even though it's overpriced

Should I buy an HD camcorder or a digital camera with HD video?

Hawkinator

My friends and I want to make short films and I was look for any suggestions on any good cameras that can shoot in HD. I noticed a lot of people I know have been filming with a Canon 7D, but way too expensive. I'm looking to spend anything around $200. Iwas thinking of getting a Kodak z950. I really want to get a digital camera because the last camcorder I had was too noisy and would be noticable in our movies. Any good suggestions? I need this asap.

Answer
If you want to take high quality videos (1080p), then you need a camcorder, not just a digital camera. I have used both, trust me, there is a difference. Unless quality isn't an issue, go for the camcorder.

A noisy camcorder would be from either 1: the tape being written on. or 2: poorly put together lenses that are loud as they focus and zoom. I can't say I've ever had a noisy camcorder problem though.

Here is what I use: Kodak Zi8
It only costs $179 on Amazon.

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B002J9G60S?ie=UTF8&tag=robert0c-20&linkCode=as2&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B002J9G60S

I actually used the Sony HDR-CX110 HD (cost me $600) camcorder for a while but then returned when the quality was barely better than my little Kodak Zi8.

The Kodak Zi8 films in 1080p at 30 fps or 720p at 60 fps (the second one is great for sports or filming while snowboarding).

For short films is a must have over the flip since it has an external mic input and the flip does not. This ALONE makes the Kodak Zi8 worth it. Also, it's only $179 on Amazon. Search YouTube for videos made with the Kodak Zi8 if you want to see the quality for yourself.

What's the best time to buy a camera in Japan?

Envr.

I want to buy a professional digital camera in Japan (Nikon or Canon) probably from Akihabara, and I wonder is there a seasonal sales on such consumer electronics so that I get the best deal?

Answer
You are almost certainly better buying it from amazon.co.jp - it will almost certainly be cheaper. I got my Canon Kiss X4i there, and it was a lot cheaper than in the stores. If you want a professional digital camera, then the 60D or the 7D by Canon are excellent (Kiss models are semi-pro only). On the Nikon side, the D7000 and D5100 are worth looking at. Canon fans (like me) will tell you Canon is great - and they are! Nikon fans will tell you Nikon are great - and they also are! There is little difference in picture quality, or the availability of high quality lenses and accessories. Go to the shop, get both in your hands, see which feels better to you, then buy it cheaper from amazon.

What is a good dSLR camera for someone beginning photography?

Amber I

I have always just used basic P&S digital cameras, but would like to learn more about photography. I don't know very much as I am just starting to think about getting a good camera and have just started doing some research. I've looked at the Canon Rebel T1i and the Nikon D5000 and also a friend told me about the Canon EOS 40D. Any thoughts and suggestions would be much appreciated.

Answer
Hey,

Any of those 3 would be a great option. Many of us have used different DSLRs and when you're below 3500$, it's all the same. If you're using a camera only for low light (high ISO) then of course there will be differences, but technology today is so good there is barely any distracting noise at ISO 6400 while 3 years ago 1600 was..eh, acceptable.

T1i is a good choice but Canon could've done it better. The previous one, XSi, has 3 less megapixels and no video but same quality. T2i, the latest of these Rebels, is in my opinion, the best choice for beginners.

D5000 is good, but is fading out due to new cameras, especially because of D3100 and D7000. D3100 is almost the cheapest and is amazing.

40D is pretty old but still has great quality. Noise is worse than at T2i, 60D and 7D (due to technology) and the LCD Screen is bad compared to ones today. It doesn't have Microfocus adjustement and well, you can only get a used one.

Here's a post called 'Buying a DSLR, what's important, megapixels, features, brand, price, quality and which one to get - http://www.the-dslr-photographer.com/2009/03/which-dslr-to-buy.html

That site has many more tutorials, tips, reviews and guides. Good luck!
