I know the newest digital camera have video recording capabilities (in HD). I have an older camcorder (about 2 years old), not even HD. I was thinking of selling the camcorder and get one of the new digital camera. Are the movie capabilities of the digital cameras on par with camcorders? What is the advantages of keeping both?

You may not get much for your current camcorder (standard definition) as nearly all camcorders sold today record in HD (720, 1080) and the prices are affordable too. Many point-and-shoot digital cameras record only in SD as 640x480. Then there are some that record HD as 720p. But to get a digital camera that can take high resolution images and full HD video, consider some of the new HD-SLR cameras like the Canon EOS 5D Mark II or the Canon EOS 7D. Nikon makes combo cams too. They have 35mm sized sensors and you can change the lenses. The only draw-back is that they have limited audio control so a separate audio recorder is best to use to compensate for that. I have a Canon G10 (replaced by the G11) which takes 14.7MP still images and can record video as 640x480 which is okay for those times 'I wish I had a video camera'. But I prefer an HD camcorder for it's features and having more control(s), etc. over a digital camera that is limited as far as video. Someday I would love to own a HD-SLR.

Kirra, you might actually want to reverse your budget numbers. (i.e. $500 on the camera, $1500 on the lenses). I say this because fisheye lenses, especially those of decent quality are not cheap. Also, Canon's current pricing puts camera either above or below your stated budget. The 50D costs about $1100 and may get replaced later this year. The 7D costs about $1700 and is not necessarily the best choice for a first time DSLR buyer. Also, Canon only offers one fish-eye lens at this time (EF 15mm f/2.8 Fisheye, $680 USD) and it is specifically meant for full-frame cameras rather than the 1.6x crop-body cameras that fit your budget requirements.

It should also be noted that the EF 15mm f/2.8 fish-eye, if mounted on 1.6x crop-body (e.g. Rebel T2i/EOS 550D, 50D or 7D), is just a severely distorted ultra wide-angle lens (not a fish-eye). Rather than providing a true, 180-degree FOV as it does on a full-frame DSLR, a 1.6x crop-body only sees about 113-degrees which is similar to the FOV of a 14mm non-fish-eye lens on a full-frame DSLR. There are alternative brands such as Sigma, who make a true 10mm f/2.8 fish-eye for 1.6x crop-bodies but, even that "cheap" Sigma will cost about $650.

If you're willing to buy a used camera, the original Canon 5D sells for $1500 or less depending on the camera's condition. Before you turn away a used camera, keep in mind that the original 5D still beats even the mighty 7D for image quality specifically because of it's larger, full-frame sensor. Unless you are shooting sports, the original 5D may actually be the best camera you can buy given your budget. If you're shooting sports, I'd look at the 50D or splurge for the 7D. Otherwise, with a budget of $1500 for the body alone, there is nothing on the market (from any manufacturer) that will beat the original 5D for raw image quality.

What's a good camera to get for a beginner?

I am wanting to start getting into photography, I've always been interested by it and I take tons of pictures with my phone now (Lame I know.) But i'd like some opinions on a digital camera that would be good for me to start with and within a reasonable price. Thanks so much! :)

You want to be a photographer! A 500$ camera (DSLR) will give you the same image quality as a 2000$ DSLR. For example the Canon T2i and the Canon 7D. Same image quality but the 7D is over a thousand more. The cheapest DSLR you could get is a Nikon D3100 (D3000 is too cheap) but the image quality is actually even better than the 7D (by a very minor amount) It is all a difference of build quality and features. I recommend the T2i because it has an amazing movie mode and is a very good camera. Any DSLR from Canon or Nikon you won't go wrong but you should invest in great lenses which is where it could get expensive but that is where image quality counts the most. But the best camera is the one thats with you. I am saving up to upgrade my Canon, I sold my old one and there just so many opportunities missed.

Please shed some light, looking to buy a camera for top notch HD video and stills. What to buy? Advice?

First of all, thank you so much for your willingness to share your expertise. Starting a production company that will be filming all types of events. Mostly weddings, documentaries, corporate seminar type stuff. Not shooting Avatar here. Looking for professional advice only. We need a solution to shooting video, capturing good audio, and stills in one piece of equipment. Looking at the Canon 7D currently. Price range needs to be kept under $2,000USD.

The Canon 7D is a great mid-range dSLR for capturing still images.

It's video cabilities are pretty good, too - Since it captures to h.264 format video MOV files, I presume your video editing environment can deal with these files. Using a current Mac and Final Cut would be best. iMovie will work, too (but be careful with the mode selected - not all will work). Most Windows based editors will require the MOV video files to be transcoded to something the editor can deal with... Lots of transcordrs out there - be sure the one you select does not drop the video out of high definition otherwise you are sort of defeating the purpose of recording in high definition.

Please keep in mind that video is more than moving images - there is the audio portion and this is where most DSLRs fall when compared to camcorders. If you are planning to use an external audio capture device (Zoom H2 or H4 - there are lots of others) to get the audio (then import when you are editing the video, and sync), then this discussion is moot - but if you are depending on the dSLR to get acceptable audio for you, you really need to re-think this.

So... here's the advice: I would strongly suggest that you use a camcorder for video and the dSLR for stills - and maybe occassional video... but combining the two is still not there.

While we're here, how are you planning to archive the captured video if you don't use digital tape? You migh want to investigate a RAID1 hard drive array... NetGear, Promise, Buffalo and others make small business Network Attached Storage systems that might meet your needs - EMC, HP and others make larger systems... They can be pretty expensive... At $3 per 60 minute miniDV tape (or the equivalent of up to 63 minutes of HDV format video which would take up 44 gig of computer hard drive space when uncompressed), it is still a cheap $/gig capture and storage media.

At your stated budget, the Sony HDR-FX7 prosumer (sibling to the pro-grade HVR-V1) is about it...

And if you watch the Avatar credits, the cameras used were from Panavision. I think they start at about $100,000... Lenses are more.

Pros use Nikon and Canon for a variety of reasons but they donât use Nikon or Canon consumer DSLRs. Pros can justify the expense of Nikon and Canon specialty lenses where the average consumer cant. Pros make money from the expensive equipment they buy but the average consumer doesnât. Just because pros use a particular brand doesnât mean its better for the average user. Nikon and Canon took hold because of aggressive marketing in which other manufacturers chose not to participate. It doesnât mean there are no other high quality DSLRs available.

If youre shopping for lower prices chances are youre not purchasing a pro camera. A pro camera will run around $2000 minimum.

If you want very high quality images without the added cost of the Nikon and Canon names go for the Pentax K-x. In tests it performs better than the Nikon D3000 and about equal to the D5000. See the comparison

I have always just used basic P&S digital cameras, but would like to learn more about photography. I don't know very much as I am just starting to think about getting a good camera and have just started doing some research. I've looked at the Canon Rebel T1i and the Nikon D5000 and also a friend told me about the Canon EOS 40D. Any thoughts and suggestions would be much appreciated.

Hey,

Any of those 3 would be a great option. Many of us have used different DSLRs and when you're below 3500$, it's all the same. If you're using a camera only for low light (high ISO) then of course there will be differences, but technology today is so good there is barely any distracting noise at ISO 6400 while 3 years ago 1600 was..eh, acceptable.

T1i is a good choice but Canon could've done it better. The previous one, XSi, has 3 less megapixels and no video but same quality. T2i, the latest of these Rebels, is in my opinion, the best choice for beginners.

D5000 is good, but is fading out due to new cameras, especially because of D3100 and D7000. D3100 is almost the cheapest and is amazing.

40D is pretty old but still has great quality. Noise is worse than at T2i, 60D and 7D (due to technology) and the LCD Screen is bad compared to ones today. It doesn't have Microfocus adjustement and well, you can only get a used one.
