Olympus or Canon Digital Camera?

Q. which one is better? olympus stylus 740 or canon ixus 65? I cant decide between these two. I like both designs! Help!!

Q. Is there anyone who could tell anything about Canon PowerShot SD990IS? I want to buy this digital camera but first I'd like to hear a couple of reviews

I got the early version of this camera in Japan, sold as the IXY 3000 IS and am head over heels in love; this replaces an SD800IS which was a long time favorite. The new one got my attention for the whopping 14.7 MP as I have been using this for taking panoramas on a GigaPan rig - [...]-- and more pixels count for much there. Plus there is the full manual (focus and exposure modes). And then there was the thrill of getting a new camera a few weeks before it was available in the US.

Mine is set up with an 8GB SD HC card, which feels infinite.

The new QuickShot mode is nice- to shoot through viewfinder where you want the quickest response time. And a bonus is a long overlooked feature- an on screen battery level indicator. There is a small button where you can instantly go to view mode, rather than flipping the shooting mode. Face focussing is very handy. Video quality is superb. Having the camera stitch mode (used for getting good overlap for single row panoramas) on the presets selection is great. And w00t! It uses the same NB-5L battery, so I now have more spares.

My negatives are minor- the black style is slick, but the plastic shell feels a little cheap/flimsy, but the camera is sturdy. My biggest gripe is the latch on the battery/SD card compartment comes open easily in your bag or your pocket; the one on the SD800 never popped open on its own. The latch for the USB dock too is odd, it is hard to figure out where the hinge part is, and I always feel like I am going to do it wrong and break it off.

Spinning the lower selection wheel takes some dexterity; so setting the aperture and f/stops in manual mode is going to take some time to be a smooth process.

I've never bought a camera just because it has a large resolution, but I am shooting 4416x3312, better than my first generation Digital Rebel.

I am in love with this little camera!

I bought a canon powershot sx30is digital camera. when i checked its review on some sites they speak of missing raw files as a disadvantage. What is it, how does it work and what is it use for.

When you shoot in jpeg, the camera takes the info, applies the settings you chose (white balance, saturation ... so on so forth) and then discards all the extra information. Jpeg also compresses the image, this comprsssion results in some loss of quality (not a ton but still).

Raw is just that, all the RAW sensor data. This gives you greater flexibility when it comes to adjusting exposure, white balance, contrast ... also any post processing you do to a RAW file isn;t permanent so it's great for making adjustments.

I see how to set it, but when I do, the camera goes to sleep in between exposures. I set it to take 100 pictures, one a minute, but after 30 seconds the camera goes to sleep (i.e., lens retracts) and it does not wake up for the next exposure. Any ideas? I want to take some time lapse shots and can't quite figure out how to make it work.

Have you tried turning off the power saving mode.

In the setup you should find "Power saving" with the option to "Auto power down" (on/off)

I am looking to buy a Canon digital camera. I realize that there are many different models. I was wondering if the later models, or the ones with higher numbers (ex. SD1000 & SD850) are better than the others. Also, I am looking for very good image quality, reletivley small sized,at least 7 mega
pixels, and the option to enlarge pictures without them losing their quality. Which Canon model do you think I would be best off buying?

There is no definite rule for determining quality or features, especially from a company that makes so many models. The best thing to do is compare reviews of the models that have a feature set you are interested in. To see a fairly objective review of different camera models try some of the on line web sites.

I like Steve's Digicams because there are reviews of many cameras, it is pretty open minded (fair) and has a very consistent testing method. Each review is divided into sections and has one called Steve's Conclusion that summarizes the good & bad features of the camera.

The site is also very well organized so you can find cameras by mfg., no of MP or when it was reviewed and there are many links to additional information.

Suppose other cameras have 5 sec, 10 sec delay then we can shoot our picture by just keeping the camera ready.

Your camera has a 2 or 10 sec self-timer.

It has no interval timer ... those are found usually on the high-end DSLR cameras.
