Should I buy a Canon 7D?

I'm finishing high school soon and want to invest in a good camera. I plan on going to school for a degree in photography, film production, or graphic design. I figure a good camera would be useful for all three. I can spend around $2,500, but under 2k would be great.

I'm pretty fixed on the 7D, but I can't figure a way to get good lenses for both film and photography for less then 1k. Should I go for a cheaper camera and buy good lenses, or vice versa?

I need a pro level camera that can handle both video and photo.

Buy the 7D now if you can afford it. At the very least get a fast normal lens 35mm f/1.8 or the kit lens that comes with it, the 18-"whatever" mm.

At the most, which will surely go over budget so as a long term plan, get some popular focal length lenses that are also fast. You can't go wrong with 50mm, 85mm and 24mm. If you don't have the 35mm yet, get it too. The more you learn about photography and film making, the more you'll appreciate what those two lenses can do.

I'm an aspiring film maker and am looking for a new camera.
I've been asking around for recommendations from some friends and most are saying that the Canon 7D is the way to go.
I don't know much about shooting video with a DSLR, and I don't know how I feel about using a separate recorder to capture audio.
Plus, most of the people who recommended the 7D are film school students, and their advice is usually "No, you NEED to buy a 7D! You NEED to edit on a Mac! NEED NEED NEED!" and I feel like I'm not really getting the best advice.

So I'm asking more about what are the pro's of shooting on a DSLR vs. a Professional video camera?
If not the 7D, what camera would you recommend?
Looking for something around $2,000-$3,000.

As for your question Bernie, the 7d is an excellent camera for video, Scenes in Black swan were recorded with the 7d. In saying that the t2i, 60d and the soon to be released t3i have basically the same video function as the 7d in cheaper bodies. In the case of the 60d and the t3i they have articulating screens that are brilliant for filming with. I'd recommend the 60d to you.

If you are looking to get into film making professionally you will want to get good sound equipment anyway.

In regards to the mac or pc question, i'd recommend a mac as it has Final Cut Pro for editing and its basically the industry standard. But if you want to save money don't dismiss a windows machine as Adobe Premier is just as good.

take a look at you tube at some of the example short films shot with each of the cameras and you can decide from that.

I'm using the same Lexar cards as well as the SanDisk Extreme cards in my 7D and 5D Mark II with no problems. So the short answer is "Yes, that card will do the job." However for the record; it is also worth mentioning that there are cheaper and equally good CF cards brands such as Delkin, Kingston, or Transcend from which to choose.

You also don't have to buy the fastest cards from these manufacturers because nothing above 30MB/s is going to make a difference in the cameras ability to capture images. Where all that extra speed will make a difference is the time spent downloading images from that card using the CF card reader of your choice. USB 3.0 and Firewire readers are the fastest download options available at this time but, most computers are still shipping with nothing more than USB 2.0 ports which work just fine.

One other note...You might want to check on the price for 8GB cards. If you're shooting RAW, an 8GB card still allows over 250 images or over 1000 images if you are shooting JPEG. Many working professionals, particularly those using cameras like the 7D which have only one card slot, prefer working with several smaller cards versus one big one because it prevents them from putting all their eggs in one basket. In other words, having one card with 250 out of 1000 images fail isn't nearly as disasterous as having one card with all 1000 images of a trip, wedding, or other project become corrupt, leaving you with nothing. It's just a thought. In my case, I run mostly 8GB cards but, I've also got the four 16GB cards I mentioned earlier.

unless you care about brand that much, I wouldn't recommend canon. You're paying more for brand name. Go to best buy and check out Nikon and Sony. Those two brands have Cameras equal and better quality that canon and they're not overpriced. Sony has more high quality compact cameras where Nikon has more larger ones and you can add different lenses if you would like. If you're really set on getting a canon, get the canon EOS 7d slr. It's a nice camera even though it's overpriced

What is a good starting lens for videography using the Canon 7D?

I just bought the Canon 7D mainly for videography. There seem to be millions of lens' out there. Since the 7D is already pretty expensive, my budget for a lens is about 200-300. I would like a lens with great zooming capability, very wide shots and of course, crystal clear image. Any suggestions?

Kinda put the cart before the horse there, didn't you? Why get a camera like the 7D, then stick a piece of junk lens on the front...

You aren't going to get what you want, with your budget. It's just too low. You may be able to find something like the 35mm f/2 for $300, a good "normal" lens on the 7D, or an 18-55 IS, but you aren't going to get the 15-85 (or even the 17-85) at that price.

Your best bet, with that budget, is to hit the pawn shops or the second-hand shelf at the local camera store. There isn't anything from Canon, and very little from the off brands, that will fill your wish list at anything close to your price.

I just bought a Canon 7D and I don't know anything about photography at this point but want to learn. I don't know what lenses to buy and am a bit overwhelmed. I want to do inside and outdoor portrait photography. Not focusing on motion. I also am interested in outdoor photography, landscapes, and architecture.
