What's best overall lens for Canon EOS 400D / Rebel XTi Digital Camera?

I am getting ready to purchase a Canon EOS 400D / Rebel XTi Digital Camera and can't decide which lens to get. The lens that it comes with doesn't zoom enough for me. I typically take pictures of my kids- and I want something versatile so that I'm not having to switch lenses all of the time. Any suggestions?

Not quite as much of a wide angle, the Canon Zoom Wide Angle-Telephoto EF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM Autofocus Lens (2007-$1,060) is a pretty good all-around lens. This review says, "If I had only one lens, this would be the one."

If the "L" lens is too rich for your blood, maybe the Canon Zoom Super Wide Angle EF-S 17-85mm f/4-5.6 IS USM Autofocus Lens is a good choice at $515. At B&H Photo, 15 reviews gave it an average of 4.6 out of 5.

Should I get the Canon EOS 5D Mark II camera or a Canon EOS Rebel XS Digital SLR camera?

I've never had a professional camera before, and I don't have too much experience with photography. However, I really want the quality of a professional camera. I don't care much for it having a bunch of features, but I do want a fairly long battery life. Also, I am a teenager (17) who's only had a summer job, so which one will give me a bigger bang for my buck?

I mainly want the camera for taking pictures of landscapes and my family because I am traveling to Iran and London this summer.

Get the Canon EOS Rebel XS Digital SLR.

Mark II is currently the best SLR out there for Canon based on features and things but it's a pro pro cam which is not necessary for you since you never had one before. The Rebel is a good choice because it's not as big and its less expensive but still offers similar functions that produce great photos.

For quality photos, you also need to take in consideration of the lens (they are expensive too!). Buy good lenses because you can still use the lenses even if you decides to upgrade the camera body. All SLR has uber long battery life...(at least with the ones I've used XD) but I suggest you buy an extra battery so when you're out visiting places, you won't have to worry of running out of batteries.

Get a big memory card too or multiple ones, especially if you take pictures in RAW format. Good quality = use a lot of memory! You don't want to run out of memory on your trip!

Another suggestion: camera is only a machine that takes picture, quality pictures also depends on your skills. So before you go on your trip, make sure you KNOW YOUR CAMERA! and all its function because it'll suck if you realize that you can take a much better photo with that feature instead after your trip.

Another note you need to consider: DSLRs are huge and heavy, especially when you have multiple lenses to take different kinds of pictures. It can be a pain in the butt to carry around when travelling to places. Get a camera backpack--it'll help your shoulders alot! Personally I prefer smaller cameras like Canon Powershot G12 when traveling with family because it's easy to use and carry but still has features like a DSLR XD (but that's my personal choice XD)

What is the difference between the Canon Rebel XTs and the EOS series digital SLR cameras?

I'm using the Canaon Powershot S3 IS at the moment. It does the job but now I need a little more after learning to shoot manually. To go further I wanted to know which was a better camera between the two.

The new Canon XTi has basically the same automatic settings as the 30D and a considerably lower price tag! There are a FEW more manual settings that are allowed on the 30D, but for what you are coming from, I think you will be more than happy with the XTi.

Also remember that the higher up in the SLR line you get with Canon, that some do not have a built-in flash (you have to buy a flash) and the weight is a lot more. I do not like the feel of the 30D and up-- it is so heavy my hand gets tired after only a few shots. The Rebel XT and the Rebel XTi are made for smaller hands and are lot more user friendly if you are an amateur photographer.

When considering a lens, I would opt out of the 18-55 kit lens, as the quality of that lens is probably one of the poorest of Canons. Either get the 17-85L series lens (sometimes they will offer this as a kit lens for a higher price), or the 28-135IS lens. I personally have the 28-135 and I love it. It's a great everyday and travel lens, as the weight is reasonable, and it has a good telephoto zoom on it. It also has the image stabilization, which I would recommend with whatever lens you get, as it greatly reduces "noise" in your photos. I would personally only choose a Canon lens over the third-party lenses that might be a bit cheaper. Canon ensures that their lenses are 100% compatible with their EOS and SLR lines, so if you ever want to upgrade your digital SLR, they will guarantee that their previous lenses will work. Check out dpreview.com for more in depth analysis and side-by-side comparison of the 2 if you want to know specifics. To purchase your camera I recommend getting it at butterflyphoto.com. They have great prices on the cameras, but they do charge more for accessories so keep that in mind. Also, with an SLR camera, make sure that you get a GOOD memory card-- alot of people don't understand that even though you get a 1 or 2 GB card, you also have to have fast read/write speed cards so that you can keep up with your camera's abilities. Pros & Cons for the Canon EOS Rebel Digital SLR camera with 18-55mm?

I'd like to hear some straight forward (list-form would be cool) pros and cons people found with owning/or using this camera. I like a camera that can do macro, FAST shutter speed (because I will be doing horse sports photos, so I need fast speed), aperture, depth of field and all that good stuff. I like Canon Rebels but there are so many to choose out there. Feel free to recommend any other Canon Rebel versions that people love/own. Trying to find a Canon Rebel that won't break my bank. I'd like to really spend no more than $500-650 if I can. Thanks!
I am tired of the point and shoot cameras (like I have now) and have enough experience with these kinds of cameras to move up in the camera world!
I don't plan on using it like a P&S camera.

I own two Canon dslr cameras and I have nothing bad to say about either model... no cons. These cameras are excellent.

But I agree with David, if you're planning to use a dslr like a point and shoot, full auto using the screen as your view finder, stay with a pocket toy because you'll gain nothing... nothing at all. These cameras are intended for serious photographers who are serious about their gear and have taken the time required to learn to operate both camera and lens.

If you're serious, then as David said the only one is the t3 in your budget range at about $550 with an
18-55 kit lens.

If you're using a mac, use Finder instead of Explorer, or the card will show up on the desktop.

You didn't give any budget... and top-spec lenses can cost up to many thousands, but Canon's little 18-55 kit lens is perfectly adequate to start with (around $100 on EBay). If I was going to keep the camera I'd put a Tamron 18-270 lens on it for general use (around $350 on Ebay.)

My brother let me borrow his Canon EOS Digital Rebel XTi camera for a trip and I'm not sure how to upload them onto my computer. My friend was telling me something about having to take out the memory card or something. Does anyone know?

I suspect your brother does this kind of thing with his camera all of the time and probably has everything necessary to do it. You should ask him how he does it and what equipment he uses which is information he will probably share with you. He'll have the software, the USB cable that will allow you to attach the camera to the computer, or a USB card reader which will allow you to download your images. No sense you buying more equipment like this if he's got it since it's his camera. If you're on vacation and your card is full and your brother is not around, take your camera to the nearest store to you that sells cameras or computers and buy an extra flash card. When you get back from your trip give him the extra flash card as thanks for letting you use his camera. I suspect he will be happy to download your images into his computer and then make CDs for you.

Will the electronic focus lens on my canon eos 630 camera work on the new digital cameras?

I bought my camera in 1991, its a canon eos 630, awesome camera, broke the smaller lens but the one i still have is 80-200mm zoom, I want to get a digital camera that will fit that lens in stead of buying all new ones. It is electric/manual focus. Does anyone know for sure. Thought about going some where and seeing if I can use a camera body and see if it fits.

If your lenses are EF or EF-S in the case of Canon yes they will work. I don't know if they'll auto focus for you but they'll fit.

How can I set the f/stop and shutter speed on my Canon Eos?

Using my Canon Eos XT digital camera, I'm trying to find a way to set my f/stop and shutter speed. When I set them using the manual settings, the camera will change the setting on the f/stop automatically by itself. How can I stop the camera from adjusting on its own?

Do you want to shoot totally manual? Turn the mode dial to "M" and use the command dial up front to change the shutter speed, then while holding down the exposure lock "*" button, turn the command dial again to adjust the aperture.

If you want to allow the camera to do some of the work, turn your mode dial to "Av" to shoot in aperture priority. This lets you set the aperture while the camera adjusts the shutter to get the correct exposure. You can also turn the mode dial to "Tv" to shoot in shutter priority where the camera figures out the correct aperture to match the shutter speed you've selected.

It sounds as if you've already played with the automatic modes and/or programmed exposure mode "P" where the camera makes it's own adjustments to get trhe correct exposure. In programmed exposure mode, you can still "shift" the exposure to a smaller or larger aperture as needed to control depth of field.

David is right and mentioned something I totally forgot. If you are shooting a zoom and the lens specs read something like f3.5-5.6, then your aperture will indeed change as to rack that zoom out to the long end of it's range. This would also occur on my EF 70-300mm f4-5.6 lens but, I almost always use that lens outdoors in good light and never shoot it with an aperture wider than f5.6 so I never run into that issue. And my primary lens is an EF-s 17-55 f2.8 IS. So the aperture is constant regardless of zoom setting and avoids the problem you are seeing.
