depends on what type of camera you are looking for..
If its a point and shoot I would go say 1. Canon 2. Sony 3. Nikon... if its DSLR then its a toss up between Canon and Nikon and Sony is third place... if its just who makes the best sensors, then its a tie between Canon and Sony and Nikon is a distant third (most high end Nikon DSLRs use Sony sensors)... Canon and Nikon are really good at the lens side of the business, Sony on the other hand is very good at making sensors but pretty weak at the link between the sensor and the lens.

Well if your looking for an entry level DSLR then both Nikon & Canon are about the same. Some very minor differences among models but you will get the same value for about the same price. I did a lot of research before I bought my first DSLR, I visited forums and asked a lot of the pros. In the end I went w/ Canon because I had some of their other products. Nikon would be just as good; go to the store and see which camera feels more comfortable.

I know and I have experience, but that will not help you pick the right one for YOU.

Here is what you will have to do to know which camera system is best for you

Go into a camera store and see which of the cameras fits your hands the best.

See which cameras menu is the easiest for you to use to make changes in ISO, camera resolution, white balance, mode switching and make EV changes.

Finally, take a SD card with you and test each camera at their highest and lowest ISO as well as when using the white balance that matches the light in the store as well as with it in the "auto white balance" mode.

Once you get home and are able to see the results on your large computer monitor, you will know which camera is better for YOU, not us

Take your time before you decide. Once you choose one, you will be married to it for decades and the cost of changing to the other system will cost you nearly as much as a divorce

I'm looking into purchasing a DSLR camera but i'm stuck on which brand to get. I've owned both Nikon and Canon digital camera's and i've noticed that Nikon has a poor picture quality. I'm unsure if that is also the case with Nikon's DSLR camera's. I'm also only an amature photographer that focuses on landscape, marco and portrait shooting. Any Suggestions on lens's would be great too!

I like canon Compact cameras more then I do Nikon, but in the DSLR run, Canon and Nikon are basically the exact same in every way. Its like Coke v. Pepsi. You have people that like Canon, and you have people that like Nikon

Either way, you will have to buy the camera and an extra lens or two for the macro and the portraits

you will have to tell us a budget for all the equipment, because the cheapest you can make it is about $1000 for what you want to do.

If you are a beginner, you can look at the Nikon D3000, D5000, and D3100 and the Canon Rebel Xs, T1i, and T2i. All of these are under $1000 with one lens

if you are more intermediate, the Nikon D7000 is a great camera, followed by the D300s. and these two are $1500-$1800 with a single lens.

as for lenses, this is a good all-around lens that can do portraits somewhat and can do macro

Personally, I would go with Canon. They have been in the camera business for a long time now and they always have high marks for their products. I had one of their digital cameras and it performed as advertised with exceptional results. Panasonic is another company that produces good cameras. During to my recent research for a new camera, both they and Canon were often rank as the top 2 companies for their click and shoot camera line. For the more expensive DSLRs, no question Canon is tops.

In consumer digital cameras I'd give Canon the edge over Nikon then Olympus and Sony.

The Nikon consumer range are just a bit too variable and that is said as a professional user of Nikon equipment for nearly 30 years.

What gives a camera its picture quality?

The short answer is that it is mostly the skill of the photographer that produces high quality pictures. The lens and camera are very important, but the ability to set the scene, adjust the cameras settings, and hold the camera very still or use a tripod with auto or remote shutter actuation when required is what gets the great pictures.

Many of the new cameras come with only an LCD screen. Would suggest that you find one that also has an optical view finder because the LCD screen is almost impossible to see in bright sun.

Higher mega pixels may not really be the best thing to look for. The information about my camera is just to show that you don't need the biggest and best. Just know how to use the one you have.

My camera has 5.2 mega pixel, but I use 3 most of the time because it gives great results, is faster, and takes less memory. Also, it only has a 3 x optical zoom and 7x digital zoom. I never use the digital zoom because making pictures larger works better on the computer. This is an old camera, but everyone is impressed with the quality pictures it takes ... like magic.

Check with the Geeks in several stores and compare prices. Ask what cameras they own. Once you select a camera read all about it in the owner's manual.

If you are looking for an adjustable camera, then it is important to choose a camera that can use the most variety of lenses and bodies .... this will give you the most flexibitliy as you build a system.

If you are looking for a P&S camera, then the Nikon and Canon cameras use the most common memory card .. the SD.

Look for a camera that has at least a 3x optical zoom (forget any reference to digital zoom .. ), has at least a 6MP sensor, and either a viewfinder or SI feature (both is better). If you an afford a camera that uses the state of the art Li-ion battery, so much the better.

I would get the Canon Powershot TX1. Most compact digital cameras shoot video at 640 x 480 but this one shoots at 1280 x 720. That's a huge difference. The sound is in CD quality. It can shoot nonstop up to 4GB (which is only 13 minutes as the highest setting).

I want a decent digital camera i've noticed some of the Canon or Nikon camera's lens project a great deal outwards... that part of the camera doesn't flatten back into the camera does it? do you have to buy that part separately ??... and are they difficult to use, do i need to have some kind of knowledge a degree in technology to be able to use one of them?
