Do I need a special flash for my Nikon Digital Camera?

I need a larger flash for my Nikon Coolpix 4500 digital Camera with a hot shoe, and would love to be able to use the trusty Vivitar Thrysistor 283 that worked so well with my old SLR, but the Nikon manual warns that flashes not specifically made for Nikon Digital Cameras may damage the camera through some kind of electronic feedback. Are they just trying to sell me a $300 flash unit, or is this a valid concern?

Yup, it is possible for an old flash to fry a camera due to the trigger voltages. You can check this site for more info on that http://www.botzilla.com/photo/strobeVolts.html. Cross reference your flash against the table there.

In any case, using an older flash would probably mean a loss of i-ttl (for nikon) or e-ttl (for canon). You would need to use auto/manual flash then. In addition, the camera may also act funny (e.g. my old metz on my canon 20D will always give me a 1/200 f5.6 on program mode. I have to use it in manual mode instead.

Since you didn't elaborate (other than to say that price is not a factor), I have no clue what type of photography you do/plan to do.

For example, if you shoot sports, you want a fast focus and high frame rate. For that, I'd recommend the Canon 1DMkIII. 10Mpixel, Canon's 1-series autofocus, 10 frames per second, ability to record to two cards (SD and CF) simultaneously, and built like a tank. Around $4500, no lenses.

If you shoot weddings, I'd recommend either of Canon's full-frame cameras: a Canon 5D ($2200) which is smaller, lighter, and with 12+ Mpixel, fantastic, or Canon 1DsMkII (or the new MkIII at $8000) which has Canon's 1-series autofocus, 16.7 Mpixel (or 22+ Mpixel for the Mark III), and absolutely fantastic. Lenses are not included with any of these.

If you shoot magazine spreads, either the Canon 1DsMkII (or MkIII) or, if price is really not an object, the Hasselblad H3D-39: 39 Mpixel, medium format, best-of-the-best camera for $30,000. Yes, $30k. And, no, that doesn't include any lenses.

However, the camera isn't the only thing that makes fantastic photographs. Your lens choice and quality have big, BIG, BIG, effects on quality.

Oh, and so does the photographer. Put the H3D Hassy is a random Joe's hand, and he will generate terrible photographs. Sure, they'd be high-quality crap, but crap none the less.

There doesn't exist one in your price range.

In fact, the only DSLR I know of that can do this at all is the new Canon 1D MKIII at around $4500. It can shoot at 10 fps.

You can pick up an older used Canon 1D with a 4.15mp sensor for around $1000 that can go at 8 fps, but I think that this is the closest you're going to come in your price for a digital camera.

If, however, you're willing to get a film camera, a Canon EOS-1n RS would fit the bill for $500 or less used. Basically, it's an EOS-1n with a non-moving pellicle mirror and a few other modifications that allow it to run at 10fps.

It depends on if you're doing studio work or shooting sports, etc. And although pros are as gear crazy as the rest of us, they buy cameras as a business investment - they won't get the latest & greatest unless that's what they absolutely need to get the job done.
Still, if I had to name just one camera, it would be the Canon 1Ds Mk ll: metal body, 17 megapixels, 3 frames per second, $7000. Reserve another $7000 for lenses.

Bridge cameras have their benefits like only needing one lens, smaller,lighter

But for quality and control a DSLR is the winner. if you want to go lower something like a canon 1100D or nikon D3100 (~£350-500)

Good midrange units are canon 600d or nikon d5100 (~£600)
Slightly higher sony alpha 77 or nikon d7000 (£750-900)

If you want a cheaper professional camera then canon 7D (superb, I have one), nikon D300s, pentax k7 (~£1000)

Or for the full frame pro stuff. Canon 5d mk iii, nikon d800 (£2500) ... Canon 1dx, nikon d4 (£4500)

Just based on sheer cost alone? Hasselblad H3D-39. 39 megapixels. $32,000. It's medium format, and the lenses will cost you probably >$2,000 each, but mercy, the amount of range you can get out of those cameras...there's also the "lowly" Canon 1Ds Mark III, "only" 22 megapixels for $8,000.

If you're going for speed, Canon's 1D Mark III ($4500) does 10 frames per second at full resolution (10 megapixels), Nikon's D3 ($5000) does 9fps at full resolution (12 megapixels) and I think 11fps at 5 megapixels.

But anyway, dreams aside, if you're not looking for a digital SLR with all the bells and whistles, and you don't need the capability to change lenses, there are lots of "SLR like" point and shoot cameras that offer the basic modes as well as most of the advanced options offered on digital SLRs at a much lower cost point. Examples of this include the Canon S5 IS, Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ50, and Sony DSC H9. These cameras run probably $400-500, but they are really at a sweet spot in terms of price and features. All three of these cameras have high megapixel counts and have large zooms on them as well. Check out the link in my profile for more info.

Can a Canon EOS 5D Mark II Camera Digital considered a PROFESSIONAL camera?

First off, any camera can be a professional camera when used by a pro. The 5DMII certainly is used by many pros. However I'll assume that what you are really asking is for the differences that make a camera be considered 'pro' rather than advanced amateur. Typically those have a lot to do with the durability of the camera and only somewhat to do with the features. Can the shutter handle 100s of thousands of actuations? How good is the weather sealing? How solid is the frame? How much flexibility is built into the camera software aimed at pros's workflow? An example of the last item can be something as simple as being able to better organize directories and image names. Examples of the other categories are found by looking at the 1D Mark III specs. It is very definitely a pro camera despite being only 10mp and 1.3x (halfway between APS and 35mm). When we look at the specs we see entries like:

... 10 fps, with a burst rate up to 110 full-resolution JPEG images or 30 RAW images
... AF system with 19 user-selectable AF points and 26 additional "assist points";
...enhanced weather resistance and outstanding reliability: featuring a shutter that's durability-tested to 300,000 exposures.

The 5D with 21mp and full 35mm coverage is way advanced on those items. However, it has 9 AF points compared to 45 for the 1DMIII, it has 35 zone TTL metering compared to the 63 zones on the 1DMIII and of course the 5DMII has a 150,000 actuation shutter vs the 300,000 of the 1DMIII.

Bottom line to the question is that the 5D is a very advanced amateur camera that is *very* suitable for professional use but doesn't quite meet the durability and features that marks a pro camera.

The 21mp pro camera is the 1DsMIII which is $7000. I would probably choose the 5DMII saving $4500 and getting the video capability, but the 1DsMIII is a more solid camera.

Good Canon digital camera?

I already have the zoom and standard lens from my rebel g camera which I assume would be interchangeable with a digitial camera??? so am wondering what a good digital camera model would be (also Canon) that would give professional type results. I need high pixels so that I can submit photos to a professional stock photo site.

The previous poster's recommendation would be good if you did not need a digital SLR, but you will need one if you want to use those lenses. To answer your first question, you will be able to use them as long as they are EF mount lenses. You can tell by looking on the lens box most of the time.

Again, to use your lenses, you will need a digital SLR. Canon offers several high megapixel options at varying price points. Depending on your definition of "high megapixels", here are some recommendations. Let's just say you need 10 megapixels or higher.

There is a digital SLR available from Canon at every level (entry level, prosumer, and professional) that is 10 megapixels or higher.

10 megapixels: 400D ($800), 40D ($1200), 1DMarkIII ($4500)
12 megapixels: 5D ($2600)
16 megapixels: 1Ds Mark II ($7000)
22 megapixels: 1Ds Mark III ($8000, ships in October)

If these are all out of your price range, you may have to give up lens interchanging capability for a conventional digital point and shoot. The A640 (10mp) and Powershot G9 would be worth looking at, too.

Dr. Iblis: Sorry to say, but Hasselblad H3D and H4D do not have interchangeable backs. They are both intended as closed systems, and therefore not compatible with film backs and 3rd party digital backs.

Hasselblad H16-32 magazines works exclusively with the Hasselblad H1 and H2F. I paid $2500 for my H1 body. A used digital back for the H1, cost from $2000 for a tethered back and $4000 for a decent non-tethered back. So you will end up spending at least $4000-4500 for a combo between the two formats. Another thing, is that the Hasselblad film back cost $1500, and not $5000 as Dr. Iblis claims.

Despite Hasselblad being the best system to date, there are other manufactures giving you the same possibility. In fact most Medium Format SLR's, like those from Mamiya, Contax, Bronica etc. are compatible with both film and digital backs. The problem is in the cost of the digital backs. For example, a used Mamiya RB67 with a filmback will run you $400. Where as, a digital back will cost thousands of dollars.

To answer your question, it's not possible to buy such solution for 700-800 dollars.
The most affordable solution is to buy two separate cameras, one for film and one for digital.
