Recording RAW images with Canon PowerShot A530?

Swaroop B

I own a Canon PowerShot A530 Digital camera and I am interested in capturing RAW images using it. Can I do it? How?

Answer
You can do it. There's a firmware hack for this one and more PowerShot cameras, which also allows to shoot in RAW (and more interesting features): http://chdk.wikia.com/wiki/CHDK

How to I use a digitial camera as a webcam?

Milo L

I have a canon powershot sd100 digital elph. I went to the cannon site, and downloaded the remote capture specifically for my camera. I connected my camera to my computer with the USB cable. When I press connect on the remote capture, it says
Camera error: Check the lens cover and the cable connections, then reconnect
I try turning the camera on, or switching to video, and it still won't work.
PLEASE HELP! tell me what the problem is, how to fix it, or give a new site to download some type of remote capture, or something PLEASE
thanx
I also have a Kodak easyShare C875, is there any way to use that as a webcam?

Answer
Try Extra Webcam 1.1.0.62, it is software that allows you to use your Canon camera as a webcam.

http://3d2f.com/programs/76-041-extrawebcam-download.shtml

If that doesn't work, might I suggest that you go out and buy a webcam? They aren't very expensive, and the time and energy you will save trying to make this hack work might be worth the $$.

looking for a digital camera?

Milkshaaak

can anyone tell me the best make to get?
and possible a website?
I am looking to do shots outside, i want a very good focus and good zoom, thanks for your help.

Answer
Recommend Canon PowerShot SX200IS .
I'm giving it a 5 Star rating - is it perfect however! No, but for MY needs, it great.

Pro's:
1) Great picture quality - generally speaking indoor pictures are pretty good, noise low on anything below 400ISO, comparable to my Canon G7, much better than my Sony T500, as good - if not better than my old Panasonic TZ5. Outdoor - outstanding - what you would expect from a Canon, sharp, clear, good color, nicely exposed. Have not fooled around with manual settings, but nice to have.
2) I like the design and find it easy to hold (no slippage in my big fat fingers!). Other cameras make it easy for you to hold your finger over the mic or flash, but not here.
3) Flash - I do not mind the pop-up. No big deal for me! Works good too!
4) Menu's are pretty easy to navigate - no problem here.
1) HD Video - I really like the quality of the video, nice wide screen playback on my 40" Samsung HDTV and looks great on the desktop. Playback is easy and smooth, no problem. (not diggin' the digital zoom - see my cons). Codec actually works with my Windows Media Player without any hick-ups or wiggles. It's not perfect (like "Sunrise Earth" HD quality), but pretty nice for taking shots of the kids and grandkid, etc. Again, plays nice on the HDTV. Sound quality is only mono, but SOOOO much better than the Panasonic TZ5 (my deal breaker for the TZ5) it's no comparison. The Sony T500 beats them both for sound quality - it's stereo! Remember, during video you can NOT optically zoom this camera, but you can digitally zoom - it's not great, but will get you a little closer if you need.
6) IS - works great
7) Zoom nice and smooth - focus is fast and accurate.
8) Battery - pretty good - seems to last me the day - I bought an extra just in case.
9) Auto Focus works like a charm, even in low light - no problem here.
10) Macro looks great - took some beautiful shots of flowers and roses in my backyard.
11) Easy to carry around - not to big, not to small either - just right!
12) Overall quality and "feel" is nice! Seems well built and should hold up to many outings with the kids and hiking around.

Cons:
1) No optical zoom with the Video. If this camera was able to optically zoom, it would be as good as it gets for a point and shoot with HD Video! Come on Canon - what's up with that!!!! Panasonic can do it -why can't you! Do you want your customers to jump ship when the new Panasonic TZ7 comes out??????? If SOMEONE could.......please, please, please, hack this and help me. Maybe Canon will do some kind of firmware update and allow optical zoom. I can put up with the motor noise of the zoom for this ability!!!!!!!! While you're at the firmware hack - if you could disable the flash pop-up that would be nice too!
2) Indoor shots a bit soft, but just about all P&S's are, the SX200 is pretty darn good though.
3) In the Auto mode, the camera automatically (hence "auto" mode) picks the setting it thinks it needs for the best shot. For example, if you real close to an object, it will automatically switch to Macro, then turn back to other modes if you take another shot - this process takes a little time (maybe a second or two) to switch. I do not mind because that is what is supposed to do, it just takes a "learning curve" understand what is happening.

Canon PowerShot SX200IS
12.1-megapixel CCD captures enough detail for photo-quality poster-size prints
12x optical zoom with Optical Image Stabilizer; 28mm wide-angle lens
HD movie shooting capability plus HDMI output
3.0-inch LCD screen; Face Detection, Blink Detection
Compatible with SD/SDHC, MMC/MMC Plus/HC MMC Plus
Price: $349.95

Do digital cameras have a unique imprint so that you could tell if a picture was taken from a specific camera?

woodruff10

I have a Canon ZR 850 / ZR 830 Digital Video Camcorder that takes still photos. My camera was stolen and I know who took it but do not have any proof. This woman posted some pictures on myspace that she took with my camera. Is there a way to tell one camera apart from others? When I right click on her pictures it will show the properties with I thought might have something. Also I bought my camera off of my Dell credit so there is record that I originally purchased the camera.

Answer
Most newer model cameras have the serial number embedded in the exif data. If you have original images on your computer from the camera that was stolen you should be able to retrieve the Serial Number of the camera that they were made with, this would be reasonably good evidence that you once had possession of that particular camera.. Then all you have to do is find an image posted with extended exif data that you suspect was made with the stolen camera and you should be able to see the Serial # of the camera used and compare them to those you made. You may need to get an exif reader/editor if your photo editor doesn't show the data you are looking for. Google exif to find free viewers & editors.

HOWEVER, there are programs that allow people to hack most of the exif data. So what you will probably want to do is make sure YOU have pictures with the serial number that match the ones being posted and then contact the police and have them investigate because it is much harder for someone to change the serial number of the physical camera. It may be on a printed label or sticker on the camera that can be altered or removed BUT the number is ALSO embedded in the firmware of the camera.

HTH, Good luck.

How do I set my camera in Raw?

canon digital camera hack on Canon A420 - smart reviews on cool stuff.

mikejar199

I have a Canon powershot sx-100IS, It is a digital camera, and dont even know if it has raw, What is raw for? Only digital SLRs have raw?
What improvements does it bring?

Answer
Your camera doesn't have a RAW mode.

Even if you can hack it somehow, there is a possibilty that photo software won't even recognize it as a standard RAW file that matches a particular camera.

The advantages of RAW are huge although it isn't always needed.
That's why some photographers shoot in RAW+jpeg. You can use the good jpegs, and only get into the RAW files when you need to.

RAW files are huge, and they take a long time to open, edit and save compared to jpegs. However, they are the closest thing to the RAW image right off the image sensor as you can get. The dynamic range is greater, gradients are finer, color gamut is wider etc.

You have a lot more leeway with white balance, no compression artifacts like jpegs and so much more. RAW files can save you when shooting tough high dynamic range pics or with white balance problems, things tha can't always be fixed with a jpeg.

All dSLRs can shoot RAW, and some top of the line (expensive) point and shoots support RAW.

Photo Capture software compatible with my camera?

I have a Canon PowerShot DS600 digital compact camera and I want to be able to take pictures from it using my computer. As I am interested in using it for Stop Motion. However, I have tried Stop Motion Pro, MonkeyJam and VideoCat, none are picking up my camera. I do not necessarily need a stop motion program. With onionskinning and video compilation and all that stuff if it's not possible. I just need something that can take pictures from my camera without pressing the button on the top.

Answer
have you thought about hacking it with a firmware that supports the intervalometer function from:
http://chdk.wikia.com/

you'll still need to press the button but it will keep taking pics for desired time and interval until the card is full

My camera is a Kodak EasyShare CX7330. Are there any free, easy ways to hack it on the Internet to add features or make it better?

Answer
All the "hacks" so far are for Canon P&S cameras. To use hacks you may have to just buy a Canon camera that someone has developed hacks.

You can do a Yahoo Search to find them. Here is one such link

Is there any way to override the firmware on my camera?

ME

I have a Samsung S860 camera, and I want to override the settings on it so I can allow the lens to be exposed for any ammount of time. Are there any programs/websites that allow me to put new firmware on my camera?

Answer
No, a quick check didn't turn up any firmware hacks for this camera. A lot of the Canon Powershots have a firmware hack called CHDK. It's really elegant in that it doesn't actually overwrite your firmware so you don't have to worry about voiding your warranty or anything like that, but it enables a lot of features that are almost impossible to find in cameras in their class. I only mention this in case you remember this the next digital camera you purchase.

Is it possible to download the canon camera software off the internet if I don't have the Cds?

Adriana

I recently had my computer cleaned out and my canon software got wiped out. I really need the software to transfer my stuff onto my computer for a school project. My cd software is at home (I'm hours away at college) and I was wondering if there was somewhere on the internet where I could download it. I looked and I couldn't find anything. Any ideas?

Answer
Kinda.

Canon has a policy of only offering web-based drivers as *updates* to *existing* drivers. It's a dumb policy, but there it is.

Without the install CD, the only way to install Canon's software is by hacking the Windows registry. You can find instructions here:

http://www.northlight-images.co.uk/article_pages/install_canon_software.html

My advice? Ask someone you know. Digital cameras are ubiquitous these days, and you'll find that many people have Canon install CDs just lying around.

Good luck!

I am a very good photographer and was just wondering how much a professional photographer earns?

Is a career worth considering; eg doing weddings, corporate or newspaper/magazine shoots?
I have a Canon EOS digital camera with suitable knowledge.

Answer
Wow... no offense but the guy saying you should not toot your own horn seems to be doing a bit of tooting himself.

"Have you ever worked professionally? If not you don't have any knowledge at all." This statement is incorrect in so many ways... and I'm guessing once the author cools off he'll realize it.

I've been an armature photographer for over 20 years, shot several events including weddings, concerts etc. and never accepted a dime... so I am in no way a professional. It's a hobby but in that 20+ years I have, believe it or not, been able to gather a considerable amount of skill and yes knowledge. I have been offerd payment more times than I can remember but it's just fun for me so I have refused. Sooo....

Basically it's like most jobs. It takes time, hard work, talent and a lot of luck. There are thousands of very skill and talented photographers who fall flat on their face and quite frankly there are hacks who often stumble into a very lucrative career.

It really all depends on you. If you have any galleries up I would be happy to give my humble opinion of your skill or lack there off... I wont needlessly tare you down or build you up... but that being said my opinion will only be one of many you should get before you commit to a career.

If you really want to make "good" money in photography you really need to find a niche (something I've never been able to do), or you need to find something that you excel at... or again... you need to be really lucky.

It's sort of like someone with a guitar asking if he or she should consider a career in music. So many levels of achievement from music teacher to rock star... and so many talented people that never make it and so many totally devoid of talent that do.

Did I help or make it worse? hahah

One final note... no matter how you look at it... to be a professional photographer takes a lot of start up money. Even if your one dimensional you will be looking at a few thousand to start.

Can i change the settings on this camera so it films longer than 3 minutes??

I have the Canon Powershot A75 Digital Camera, and when i film videos, the camera stops automatically after the 3 minute mark. This isn't because of memory cards being filled up, so i was just wondering, is there any way to film more than 3 minutes on this camera????? Thanks!

Answer
There is a hack for Canon point & shoot models that enables this and many other features. They don't list the A75 as a supported model but you could give it a try - maybe they just didn't bother to list the A75 because it was released way back in Feb 2004.
Here's the information: http://lifehacker.com/387380/turn-your-point+and+shoot-into-a-super+camera
and from there you can follow a link to the download. It's a file that you put on your memory card.
This file doesn't overwrite the camera's internal software so if it doesn't work, just erase the file from your memory card - no damage done.

How to to set a camera to take several pictures automatically?

Dr.Balaji

i need to fix this olympus digital camera in a tethered balloon to take several pictures from 200m hight. My idea is to set up the camera in a mode that will continuously take pictures - until i stop it again. Please tell me how to do it

Answer
There are programs that can be used to hack into Canon cameras. One was used recently to capture near space photos of the Earth. I don't know if there are hackers for Olympus but you may try searching for it. This is already beyond the original purpose of the camera.
