Is it cheaper to buy a digital camera (point & shoot) in the US than here in Manila?

jekoy

I am planning to buy a Canon PowerShot SD880 IS (known as SD870 IS in Manila). The list price in the Canon Philippines site is Php 25,000.

Answer
Absolutely. According to Google, 25,000 PHP converts to $516 USD which is outrageously expensive for a point and shoot in the States. The camera alone costs $247.95 at B&H Photo & Video (a long-time, reputable camera equipment dealer in New York City) which roughly converts back to 12,013 PHP. However, be aware that the customs services may impose duties. Apply customs avoidance schemes at your discretion.

Where can i go to get my camera fixed? ?

sofia

i live in the philippines-- so a specific lcoation would be REALLY helpful. i'm looking for places other than the canon service center. :) i went there yesterday and they gave me a really bad price.

Answer
Honestly, this is a frequent occurrence with digital equipment. Many times, equipment winds up costing more to repair than it is worth. If you find a markedly cheaper price for the repair, I would be concerned as to whether it is actually being done correctly.

So, at this point the question is really whether or not the camera is worth repairing.

How much is Kodak Easy Share M1063 camera?

alyana

Im from the Philippines. I am looking for a camera with a reasonable price and has quality pictures?

Answer
From bhphotovideo.com that camera in the color pink runs about $150.00

I would recommend, though, maybe a different brand than Kodak.
if you would like to spend a little more, http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/610513-REG/Nikon__Coolpix_S220_Digital_Camera.html

-The benefits of that camera are the vibration reduction, and higher ISO (which means you will make better pictures in low light situations.)

The Nikon is a much better camera both by reputation, statistics, and my personal experience, but I would also recommend a Canon.

If you keep it Canon or Nikon, you can't go wrong.

Canon kit lens 18-135mm Vs Sigma 18-250 macro?

Which lens will i benefit more on travelling/vacation? The canon and the sigma lens has a similar weight.

Getting my first ever dslr and i dont want any regrets on getting a lens haha soo hopefully you could share your thoughts and experience :)

For the sigma

All the goods are in sigma from what i read
It has a lens hood which is a big plus for me and longer focal range
A filter thread of 62m
the structure is thermally stable composite
And it is not a kit lens

Ive also read the reviews of tamron 18-270 pzd i tested it myself too, didnt liked it lol.

I will get a prime lens sigma 30mm 1.4(old version) which has a 62mm filter thread too! Soo that means i can just buy one polarizing filter and use it on those 2 lens, soo its pretty much i get the best of both worlds lol

The thing is, that i cant buy the 30mm 1.4 straight away since the 18-250mm lens is quite pricey

The canon

The one thing good about the canon 18-135mm is probably the good image quality since it has a shorter range and less glass i guess, and it comes off very cheap if i order the 60D which comes off with that kit lens, and also a good thing here is since its cheap i can just buy the sigma 30mm 1.4 straight off with it.

Bad thing is
It doesnt come with a lens hood
It is a Kit lens( i really dont like the kit lens because it looks like the 18-55mm which everyne has)

I am ordering this online http://www.einfo.co.nz/
Would be lovely if you check the price for yourself and how it differs ordering a sigma 18-250 and a 60d body should be at $1,600 nzd and the canon 60d with 18-135 is at $1,266 nzd but since its that cheap i can buy a sigma prime lens for around $500 which totals up at around $1,800 nzd

In conclusion which is the best for me? When it comes to travelling?
Im going to usa, kuwait, hong kong and my hometown philippines all in 1-2months at the end of the year soo hopefully the prices goes down

Here are the two lenses side by side:
http://www.the-digital-picture.com/Reviews/ISO-12233-Sample-Crops.aspx?Lens=678&Camera=736&Sample=0&FLI=0&API=5&LensComp=837&CameraComp=736&SampleComp=0&FLIComp=0&APIComp=5

The Sigma is sharper at 18mm and f/3.5, but the Canon get sharper as you go longer and stop down. As for a lens hood, you can buy an aftermarket one if you feel you really need one.

Now, as for what you SHOULD get, the Canon is OK, I guess. It is a decent performer and adds IS to the mix.

For about the same $ as the Canon (though it may be more since it is not in the kit), you can buy the Tamron 28-75 f/2.8. You lose the IS, but you pick up a 1 1/2 stops on the long end and it is sharper throughout.
http://www.the-digital-picture.com/Reviews/ISO-12233-Sample-Crops.aspx?Lens=678&Camera=736&Sample=0&FLI=4&API=5&LensComp=366&CameraComp=453&SampleComp=0&FLIComp=3&APIComp=6

I personally own a Tokina 28-80 f/2.8 AT-X and it is a great lens. Sigma makes a nice 24-70, but it is more $ than the Tamron.

What Canon DSLR should I buy?

Hi guys. For my 18th birthday, I thought I'd get a digital SLR instead of my parents throwing me a huge party. I'm a Communications student, so I'll be using it for school, as well as for fun. I'm also an aspiring photographer (though still a beginner) so I want to get a pretty good camera. I never owned a DSLR, so I was thinking if I could get your suggestions. I've only played around my blockmates' DSLRs a few times before, and I kind of have a feel already, but still kind of a noob. Right now I am looking at the Canon 550D and 1100D. These are probably my only choices since I'm concerned about the price. Which do you think is better for me?

Also, I live in the Philippines, so the price for the cameras here is higher. My dad's officemate is going to Singapore this summer and can get it in a cheaper price, like 5K less? But the warranty won't be covered here I think. Should I buy it here or there?

Your answers and suggestions will be much appreciated. :)

Answer

I'm planning on buying one. If you know where I could buy one online for a smaller price, that would be nice too!

Answer
The prices of digital cameras in the USA definitely are the cheapest ( EBAY.com -category-cameras/camcorders-digital cameras, Amazon.com and Popular Photography magazine)---In the Philippines-the extra EVAT and tax fees for imports/exports gives such tech gizmos extravagant retail prices. In Hong Kong- your Canon may be priced better than the Phil. but still fake brands may get you ripped off---So buy in USA for a bargain ---

you can go to Quiapo, there are a lot of camera store in there. One of them is Henry's

but, you have to be very careful when buying used cameras. Cameras have actuations, they are the camera mileage, once they reach the maximum actuations, it will stop shooting.

Choosing a DSLR or any digital camera is always a matter of personal preference. Ergonomics play a big role in choosing, and all of us have different hands. Read the links below and I am sure you will be fine.

My personal preference:

for a DSLR, I prefer Nikon because the parts are easily available in my area, especially the lenses from third party like Tamron and Sigma, which can save me more money than buying the original Sony or Pentax lenses. Pentax and Sony lenses are just difficult to acquire in my area.

I would recommend the Nikon D3100 or D5000. They have a very easy user friendly guide that was designed for beginners.

for PNS...
I like the Canon S95 and S90 a lot. I prefer them than any PNS out there because both cameras can fit in my jeans pocket, which means that I can have a camera every time. An alternative for them, if the price is too high would be the Lumix FH20 < http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QEbeCPSkG⦠>, For extended zooms, that would be a toss-up between the Canon, Nikon, and Lumix.

What Video Camera & Lense Is Best?

canon digital camera prices philippines image

Her

What Video Camera Is Best. Camera: Canon 6d iii. Or Canon 7d.
Lenses: Canon EF 24-105mm Or Canon 24-70mm.?

Answer
Hi Amanda:

Technically speaking, none of those Canon models is a "video camera" (since you are asking in the Camcorders section). Those are digital SLR still cameras ("DSLR") that have a video mode "tacked on". (They can't be legally sold in Europe as "camcorders", and have recording time-limits for both legal and technical reasons.) You can only shoot HD video for 12 minutes at a time.

In previous discussions this week, you've been asking about starting a "movie business", and not having money for equipment. I know that the prices of many DSLRs seems cheaper than most of the good full-camcorder models with pro-features, but the cost savings comes with some drawbacks, especially for a beginner.

Your earlier Q&A mentioned being able to afford a Canon EOS 5D II & a Røde VideoMic, but in the same week you also posted asking people to send you dollar bills (which I deleted).

Now you are asking about cameras that cost between $1500 - $3000 USD.

I think the Canon HV-40 camcorder is better-suited to your "movie project" needs, and better-suited to the pocketbook of a teenage beginner & her friends. They sell for under-$599 USD and can accept external microphones. And they come with a decent zoom lens, so no extra expense there.

Since you are in the Philippines, which uses the NTSC television format, but are surrounded by PAL-TV countries, be sure to buy the Canon Vixia HV-40 (NTSC) and not the Legria HV-40 (PAL).

hope this helps,
--Dennis C.

Which brand is good and affordable? It won't be for professional use; I just love taking pictures. What picture resolution should I get? Where can I find it in Singapore?

Answer
Starting with the Prosumer/Professional categories, the $2500 to $4999 category was very interesting. The $2500 6.2 megapixel Fuji FinePix S2 Pro took top honors, gaining both the popular vote and our own vote. The only other camera in that category was the $4999 Kodak 14 megapixel DCS-14n camera. A very close examination of the two prints reveled that the Kodak camera actually did capture more fine detail than the FinePix, even the super fine woven threads of the models shirt were clearly visible in the Kodak shot. But the Fuji cameraâs image appeared sharper and had better overall tonality. This was especially noticeable on the models skin.

The next two categories ran unopposed entries. The Monolta DiMage 7Hi was the only camera in the $1200 to $2499 category, and the Sony DSC-F717 was the only camera in the $900 to $1199 category. Now, both these cameras are excellent pieces of equipment, but where were Nikon and Canon with their cameras? Were they afraid that their cameras would not compare well? I know from experience that they make great cameras, so why would they choose to not go head to head with their competition?

In the $700 to $899 category the Olympus c-5050 took the award. This is a fine camera, and the picture it produced was very crisp. A bit too much, actually. In general, the 5050âs sharpening algorithm is a bit aggressive for me, so our pick was actually the Kyocera Finecam S5, which produced an equally excellent image, but without the extra edginess that the sharpening gave the 5050.

Finally, in the $500 to $699 category, the public picked the Kyrocera Finecam S3L, while we chose the Pentax Optio 550. Both produced very nice images, but the Pentax had slightly better highlight detail.

The Point and Shoot categories had a great deal of competition. Starting with the $400 To $499 group, the Olympus C-4000 was picked by the public as the winner. We gave our vote to the HP Photosmart 850 which we felt had slightly better shadow detail.

Next was the $300 to $399 category, and here the winner, and our pick as well was the HP Photosmart 812. Its tonality was remarkably smooth, and although its 4.3 megapixel sensor was not the largest in this price group, its images were the best. Please note, if you were an early buyer of this camera (it was introduced at the CES show in November of 2002) be sure your camera has the latest firmware, as early versions had some issues with image quality.

In the $100 to $199 group, HP won again with its Photosmart 620. This 2.1 megapixel camera impressed us with its smooth, full tonality and its open shadow detail. The images were excellent for a $199 digital camera.

Finally, in the below $100 camera category, the Vivicam 3315 stood out. This camera is only 1.3 megapixel, but it produced a 4x6 print that was quite acceptable. The shadow detail was not great, but the colors and sharpness was outstanding for the price. Perhaps most surprising in a $99 camera were features such as the 1.5â LCD, and the ability to take SD memory cards in addition to itâs built in 8mb of memory.

In summery, digital cameras keep getting better, smaller and less expensive. The quality of even the low-end cameras was remarkable, and very good things are happening at the top of the professional and prosumer camera lines. Remember, itâs not all about megapixel count, true image quality is the combination of many factors. Direct comparisons such as the DIMA shoot out show that the state of the art is advancing rapidly, and we all stand to benefit from that.
