digital camera?

vnoe07

I am looking into buying a compact digital camera and wondering what would be the best buy??? I'm looking to spend 200-300 on it. I'm not overly computer savvy, so something simply and good quality. Am I asking too much? Any suggestions???
I have heard that the Canon Powershot is good....but which one???
thanks so much

Answer
You're right about looking into Canon's. They have several in your price range. These prices are from B&H Photo, available through Yahoo! Shopping.

A630 - 8.0 MP - $195
A570-IS - 7.1 MP - $207
SD1000 - 7.1 MP - $209 (Silver)
A710-IS - 7.1 MP - $239
SD1000 - 7.1 MP - $240 (Black)
A640 - 10.0 MP - $260
SD750 - 7.1 MP - $275 (Silver or black) (no viewfinder)
S3-IS - 6.0 MP - $297
SD700-IS - 6.0 MP - $305

My order of preference would be almost the reverse order of that list.

Sleek, ultra compact cameras:
SD700-IS, if you can still find one. This is a very cool camera.
SD730, has no "image stabilization" or optical viewfinder, but has the newest image processor and very true colors.
SD1000, is an update of the extremely popular SD600 and it should be just well-received.

Compact cameras:
A640 and A630 - I'd buy one of these myself for the really great image quality and user control that is available, if you want it. It has the largest sensor in the list, which is always an attraction for me due to the image quality.
A710-IS - called the "poor man's G7" by some.
A570-IS - cheaper and possibly as good as the A710-IS

Ultrazoom:
The S3-IS is the way to go if you want to take ultra zoomed close ups of things far away.

Out of the bunch, I'd buy the A640 or SD700-IS for myself.

Digital Camera....?

What is a good yet cheaper priced digital. Thanks!

Answer
Consumer Reports for November 2006 has ranked the Canon Powershot A620 as the best compact digital camera. It is becoming almost a legend for longevity at the top of various consumer lists. It looks like this model has been replaced by the A630, which I would expect to be just as popular. The A640 appears quite similar and shares the "600" series numbering, so I guess it's just another upgraded version of the now-classic A620. It looks pretty much the same except for baing a 10 MP camera. The continuous drive is a little slower, but the files are larger, so that's no surprise. I own a few Nikon DSLR's and I'd buy the Canon A630 or A640 for myself.

With this camera, you will find the memory card is a cute little token of thanks from Canon, but not much more. Buy a 1 GB Sandisk Ultra II or Extreme III card. You will NEED the increased capacity and write speed to fully realize the benefits of your camera.

If you want to trim the budget a little, the Canon Powershot A430, A530 or A540, are all great choices. You will still need a decent memory card as discussed above, though.
