Nikon d40 or Canon eos digital rebel Xti?

doodles

I am looking to start a higher level of photography and am looking to buy a digital slr camera to start what may turn into a lifelong hobby or career I have come across two that are in my price range and have appealed to me so far. They are obivously the Nikon D40 and the Eos digital rebel Xti. I have read reviews favoring both but so far Im leaning a little to the canon because of nikons auto focus disability, so to owners or critics which one do you consider the better camera, please list pros and cons

Answer
According to several sites I've visited the Nikon D40 has been discontinued. You can still buy a new one at B&H. The D40 was introduced in 2006 so its dated technology compared to the Canon XTi which is also a discontinued camera, having been replaced with the XSi.

Either camera would serve your needs. Just handle both and decide which one feels best in your hands.

Just remember that lenses are investments. DSLR camera bodies aren't.

Is a Canon EOS Digital Rebel XTi a good camera?

Is it?

Answer
I have a Canon 1000D. It's excellent. Any of the Rebel line is an excellent choice.

Don't mis understand. These cameras are intended for serious photographers. So they don't have all the "features" and "modes" of a compact. Those are gimmicks and are intended for the uneducated photographer who doesn't want to learn but expects the camera to do everything.

Truth is, a dslr is not a magic bullet to excellent technical quality. Most of the review photos you've probably seen were not only taken by experience photographers but have had some post editing done on them.

The first step to taking excellent photos is knowing how to operate your equipment.
