I've been into photography for about 2 years and I've used a Canon EOS Rebel K2. I want to step up to a nice digital camera that's HD and gives good depth to the photos. Have any suggestions?

Answer
5 DSLRs Under $500
Written by Eric on November 13th, 2007 | 4 Comments

Just in time for the holidays, hereâs 5 great DSLRs (with kit lenses) under $500:

1. Canon Rebel XT - The Rebel XT was my first digtal SLR camera. I bought it shortly after it became available in 2005 for $1000 (a Rebel XT is $499 with a lens as of Nov. â07). I still use it on almost a daily basis. Iâve shot somewhere around 25,000 â 30,000 shots now. No hiccups yet. Anyway, I can personally vouch for the reliability and image quality that this camera packs. (Read more about the Rebel XT here.)

2. Nikon D40 - Iâve been using a Nikon D40 for a few months. Iâm primarily a Canon user; however, I wanted one of these cameras to play around with and to see what Nikon had to offer. I am very pleased with the capabilities of my D40. The D40 is significantly lighter than any DSLR that Iâve ever used, even the Canon Rebel series. Itâs now $477. (Read more about the Nikon D40 here.)

3. Pentax K100D - The K100D is compatible with any Pentax lens ever produced. The in-body Shake Reduction (.pdf fact sheet) means that you get image stabilization with every K-Mount lens out there. This is the only DSLR under $500 that does this. The K100D also features a 2.5â³ LCD, an 11 point AF system with 9 cross-type sensors, ISO 200-3200 and 16-segment multi-pattern metering. All this at $449 is a heck of a deal. (Read some reviews of the K100D here.)

4. Samsung GX-1S - The Samsung GX-1S is a 6.3-megapixel digital SLR featuring world renowned Schneider optics and a high-resolution 2.5-inch LCD. The interchangeable-lens DSLR was developed jointly with partner Pentax Corporation, meaning that it accepts K-AF Mount lenses. The $441 GX-1S is essentially a rebadged Pentax *ist DS2, which is just fine for this price.

5. Olympus E330 - The E330 was the first Live View DSLR, meaning that the LCD screen serves as a viewfinder. You wonât find this feature on any other DSLR under $500 (the E330 is $450). The E330âs LCD is âarticulated,â it can extend out from the camera body and swivel downward or upward so the E-330 can be held overhead to shoot over a crowd, held at the hip, or even placed on the groundâsomething thatâs not possible with a traditional SLR that relies on an optical viewfinder alone.

How to take professional quality indoor digital pictures with no flash and no camera stand?

Amorican

I guess I need a professional digital camera, but which one, and with what equipment?
An example of what I want to do: I see photographers taking excellent shots at concerts (indoor) without using a flash, and holding the camera in their hands.

Answer
If you do get a DSLR or the like, get one with high ISO setting (1600-3200), a lens with a big aperture (F/2.8 or lower would be nice) and Image Stabilization (for Canon) or VR (for nikon) which gives you the ability to handhold about 3 stops less then you normally would be able to.

Also as mentioned, your shutter speed should not be lower then the focal length you're shooting at, i.e. at 200mm, your min shutter speed is 1/200. Any lower and it will show up blur unless you have IS/VR assist.

Does price matter when it comes to choosing a good digital camera?

canon digital camera 12 megapixel image

Holly

ive seen digital cameras for $ 99 and $999. i dont know much about technical specifications but the cheap ones and the expensive ones are both 12 megapixels, 5 x zoom, etc. so why is there such a big difference in price? should i just get the $ 99 one? im not good with electronics (i either lose them or break them).

p.s are these good cameras?
samsung ES15B
sony cybershot DSCS930
olympus FE-26

Answer
What varies widely in these cameras is the build quality, and the image processor. A $99 camera will be flimsy, the lens zoom will be clunky, and it will take forever for the processor to take the picture and save it. A $999 camera is beyond your league.

Personally, I find that $200-$300 spent on a good brand (Nikon, Canon, Sony, Olympus, Pentax, Panasonic) seems to be the sweet spot for price and performance in point-and-shoot cameras.

What is the best digitial camera to get?

(:

I'm getting a new digital camera. I'm 14, a girl, and the budget is not an issue. What's the best digital camera in your opinion? Is the Sony tx1 or the Samsung 12.2 megapixel camera (the one with the screen on the front) any good? Most descriptive and helpful answer gets the points. Please and thank you. (:

Answer
At least 10 - 30 times a day someone on YA asks: "Which one is a good camera to buy?"
A quick search would have given you hundreds of replies, but once again here is my 10 cents on the subject:

Point & Shoot cameras are wonderfully handy because of their small size.
When light conditions are ideal, they even take really nice photos - all of them do.

However, they all DO have limitations - they don't do very well in low light situations (i.e. noisy photos, hard to avoid blur, etc). The little onboard flash is very harsh at close range, and doesn't reach very far.
Many of them have no manual functions, so you are limited to only very basic photos, you can't compensate for unusual situations, or do many fun "tricks" and special effects.
P&S's also suffer from frustrating shutterlag and many of them chew through batteries rather quickly.

However, if you're ok with all those limitations, then go ahead and pick one, most of them (the same type and same price range) are rather similar. Personally I would pick either a Canon or a Nikon, and would certainly stay away from Kodak.

A higher end P&S will give you more manual options and better quality. Many of those even give you the option of adding a proper flash (which makes a big difference to your flash photos).

Don't worry too much about megapixelsâ¦. there is a limit to how many pixels you can squash into a tiny P&S sensor before you actually LOSE quality rather than gain it.
Don't worry about digital zoom, in fact, don't EVER use it. It simply crops away pixels, i.e. destroys information. The only real zoom is optical.

Decide which features are important to you, and look for cameras that have that feature.
Then go compare a few models on www.dpreview.com .

The very best thing you can do for your success is to borrow some books and learn about photography. A bit of knowledge will make a much bigger difference to your photos than your choice of P&S camera can.

For what it's worth - if I was in the market for a P&S camera right now, my choice would be a Canon Powershot SX20 IS http://www.usa.canon.com/consumer/controller?act=ModelInfoAct&fcategoryid=144&modelid=19208

What is wrong with my digital camera?

best rated canon digital camera on Canon Powershot A1100 IS Review
best rated canon digital camera image

Xenu

I bought a canon powershot digital camera a couple of months ago, that I've used maybe 3 times and now the power button is broken. What happens is the camera will turn on, but only if I hold down the power button. Once I let go of the power button it turns off, it doesn't stay on. Does anyone know what it would cost to fix this problem? It kind of pisses me off because I take really good care of it, it's practically brand new, and now it doesn't work.
It is fully charged so it can't be the battery.

Answer
If the power button is really broken and it's out of warranty, it will cost more to repair than to replace. Holding down the power button would not make a difference, but could really cause a problem as it could give a double click which would turn the camera off. I would guess that the battery and camera contacts need to be cleaned as described in the link below. Hope the following will solve your problem and it is not the button.

http://www.google.com/base/a/4210404/D13701973093918363271

The batteries mentioned below are new formula NiMH batteries that will hold charge for one year when not used. Also, 2000mAh batteries seem to have a longer life. Did not like them at first, but have 12 of these batteries that are over five years old and are still as good as new. Higher mAh batteries still work well in flashlights, but won't start my camera.

A friend asked me to clean and charge her new 2000mAh Duracell batteries as described in the last link. Those batteries are still going strong after four months of casual use and haven't been recharged.

Camera reports batteries low, but is it low charge or bad electrical contacts? Overcharging can ruin good batteries! The secret to making digital cameras work better is having good electrical contacts between batteries and camera.

CAUTION Do not overcharge! Batteries can be damaged. Use an automatic two or more hour Energizer Compact smart charger with temperature monitor, trickle charge technology, and safety timer ($9.76) at Walmart. Use pre-charged 2000mAh Duracell ($12.97) or RayOVac ($5.97) batteries (hold charge one year) and a full cycle charge. To preserve battery charge, use the viewfinder.

NiMH batteries should be recharged when camera reports batteries low. Old batteries can discharge over night, but may provide normal service immediately after being charged. Battery pairs no longer usable in cameras may work well in flashlights. Do not drop batteries on a hard surface or allow voltage below one volt to prevent polarity reversal.

CAUTION To prevent memory card corruption, keep batteries charged and don't delete. Wait for lights to stop flashing then turn camera off before removing memory. For card readers, double click Safely Remove Hardware. Select, then click Stop and OK.

Never touch battery ends or camera electrical contacts. Oil from fingers will contaminate contacts. Use batteries in matched pairs of same brand and rating. Do not mix old and new batteries. New will only do as well as old.

Digital cameras reset to original settings if batteries are removed for one minute. Time varies with function/camera. Check display/setup menu for non-auto functions and date/time. Remove extra memory to eliminate this as a possible problem. Insert fully charged/cleaned batteries and restart camera. The ultimate non-physical repair for software-using devices is reset by removing power ... VCR/DVD players one month.

What does it mean on a rechargeable battery for a digital camera when it says "1050mAh" or "800Ah"?

Joe.R

Does the higher number on a rechargeable (Li-ion) battery mean it will last longer that one with a lower number? Please explain, as I want to buy a generic rechargeable battery for my Canon G10 digital camera that's a lot cheaper that the Canon version.
The trouble is that the more expensive Canon battery has "1050Ah" printed on it, while the generic has "800Ah" (or something like that).

Answer
Higher ratings means more photos per charge.

Generic batteries come in different ratings. You just happened to find one at a low rating.

Below is a link to another generic replacement fot your Canon NB-7L battery. This one is rated 1500mah (higher than your Canon battery) and at $12 still costs less than the Canon battery. User reviews are very good for this generic.

Higher ratings wont harm your camera they will just give more shots per charge.

BETSEYY JO

I do not have a digital slr camera. Just a digital camera. I really want to take pictures with the brokeh effect. here are the details about my camera

Canon - PowerShot 12.1-Megapixel Digital ELPH Camera - Red

Model: SD780 IS

Is it possible with this camera?

Answer
Unfortunately, it is probably not. The sensors on most compact digital cameras are so small that they have a large depth of field even at the largest aperture (lowest f stop number). To test this, put the camera in aperture priority mode, zoom the lens all the way to its widest setting, and choose the lowest aperture number you can, which is probably f2 or f2.8. if you can't see a shallow depth of field effect (bokeh) in your backgrounds with that setting, your camera can't achieve it. If you can't afford a dslr, you can fake the effect in photoshop with the gaussian blur tool.

good luck!

Is this camera good for fashion photography?

Kodak Easyshare Z1285 12-Megapixel Digital Camera - Black

⢠12.0 megapixels
⢠5x optical zoom
⢠2.5 LCD screen
⢠Digital image stabilizer
⢠HD pictures and video
⢠64MB internal memory

if not, are there any products or assceories to help my photography with this Camera?

Answer
It depends on what you mean by "good." No professional is going to be using anything but an SLR. I'm sure there are plenty of professional fashion photographers who would tell you that you shouldn't be using anything less than a medium format film or digital camera, like the Hasselblad H3DII-50.

http://www.hasselbladusa.com/products/h-system/h3dii-50.aspxa

They'd probably tell you that if you don't have many thousands of dollars to spend on gear, to skip digital and get an old Hasselblad or Mamiya 6x6 Film Camera and learn what you're doing on it.

That said, a lot of professionals use 35mm or small format DSLR's, and if you're not trying to be a professional, but just learn your way around, you can probably learn a lot and take some good pictures with the Kodak. Even among point-and-shoots, you'd be significantly better off with something more aimed at enthusiasts like a Canon Powershot G series, as mentioned above. Here's a list of other good choices:
http://www.imaging-resource.com/WB/WB.HTM?view=dp_enth

What you're missing on the Kodak Z1285 that's available on other point-and-clicks are Aperture and Shutter priority modes and a Hot Shoe. Also, you can get some with larger sensors and higher quality lenses.

The Kodak's not too bad though, it has some of the important features you need, like low lag time a decent frame rate, manual shooting mode, and a reasonably bright aperture (f2.8) when zoomed out to the not-so-wide 35mm. There are some unknowns here that are important for fashion, like how fast the auto-focus is, particularly in low, light, and whether or not it has an infrared auto-focus assist. You don't want to use strobe auto-focus assist or red-eye reduction for fashion.

As far as flashes, you can get by without the hot shoe (or wireless flash controllers) by using slave flashes, as long as you aren't shooting in an environment with a bunch of other photographers concurrently. Pick up 2-5 slaves flashes:
http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_ss_gw?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=slave+flash&x=0&y=0

and get (or make) some cheap flash trees. The Kodak camera and a few slave flashes (and some decent shooting environment and models) would be enough for you to start learning a lot about fashion photography and get some decent pictures. You aren't going to be hired to do coverage of runway shows for some magazine with that gear, but it's a start.

You need that camera's device driver to be installed. Then you will be able to see camera as a "drive". You can copy and paste between camera drive to computer's folders.

Is it necessary to install the software that comes with a digital camera?

Justin P

I just purchased a Canon Digital Rebel XTi camera that came with 2 software CDs. One is listed as the EOS Digital Solution Disc and it has applications such as Zoom BrowserEX 5.7 and EOS Utility 1.1 on it.

The other is EOS Digital Software Instruction Manual

I've already connected the camera to a friends computer and the Windows XP recoginzed the new hardware. The pictures transfred over fine without insalling any additional software.

Are the 2 discs that came with the camera necessary to install?

Answer
i think u have to install the software comes with ur camera if u want to use the timelapse recording feature.
i believe the rebel xti has this feature in which u can programme ur camera after connecting it to the pc to shoot a several frames over a period of time or with a certain time intervals between frames.
u have to read the manual to understand this feature.
other than that i don't think u need to install anything else .....

Where can i find digital cameras for wholesale price?

aix4200

Does any one know where i can purchase digital camera at disounted or wholesale price like canon. Is alibaba a good places there are many sellers located in China . Not feel comfortable buying anything outside of US to avoid scam/fraud.

Answer
Alibaba.com has a lot of sources but as for all other trade portals, having "Trust Pass" or Gold Membership does not guarantee that the seller is legitimate, although the chances of them being legitimate is fairly higher.

I have sources for the Digital Cameras, as I, too, source for consumer electronics. If you tell me what you're looking for, I might be able to help you find the product you want.

You can use Trade Portals to find the goods but you have to check all their details. DO NOT USE Western union as a form of payment unless you have a contact in that Country (example; China) who can help incase something goes wrong.

You may also post for help on Alibaba.com in the resources section. As for payment options, paypal is not common in China but there is something that's called Alipay.com, similar to paypal.

I also have a small list of Canon wholesalers in the US. I personally researched them, they have phone numbers and addresses. One of them is in New York. I can sell the list to you if you wish to get this information. Just send me a message.

What is the macro/infinity button on the Canon camera?

Rohoabcd

I have a Canon digital camera. There is a macro/infinity button. I know what the macro is and use it, but there is nothing about the infinity part of that button in the Canon manual. When I press that button, only macro comes up, not infinity which is 2 triangles. I don't know how to get the infinity on the screen, and what it is used for. Hope someone can help. Thank you.

Answer
All that you need to know about can easily be found in your User Guides. Just look up 'Infinity' in the Index of your Advanced User Guide (it may possibly direct you to your Basic User Guide).

Infinity focus is probably not accessible while in Auto mode, so you may need to select M or one of the scene modes instead.

Your Infinity focus mode (which you say looks like two triangles) is actually an icon of Mountains (or a Landscape). So, if you were taking an image of a landscape (or distant subject), you should select Infinity focus.

From one Canon manual...
"Infinity...Use this mode to record subjects 3m (9.8ft) or more from the end of the lens."

Also, have a look at the very handy reference chart at the very back of your Advanced User Guide. It shows you...which "Functions are Available in Each Shooting Mode" . Infinity (as well as every other camera function can be found here). This chart also shows you on which page each function can be found on, so refer to it often if you have any queries...

good luck

How do I use the movie mode in my Canon A70 powershot digital camera?

robert b

I'm away in another country and don't have my user manual. Can anyone tell me how to use the "movie mode" feature in my Canon A70Powershot digital camera? I know to turn the wheel to the movie camera selection of course, but then I believe there are a couple of steps to initiate and then stop the movie taking mode, -thanks for any help!

Answer
Yes, you need to turn the mode dial to the little movie camera icon...and then you simply press the shutter button half way down to get your exposure, white balance and focus settings...then press it all the way down to start recording.
And just press the shutter button again to stop recording.

I am planning to buy a camera this boxing day but wondering what is the different between t2 and t3 canon digital cameras. Pls give me an advice!

Answer
So your price range is 1,000 bucks or so? There is no T2, but there is a T2i. And Canon makes a T3 and T3i. The T2i is older, but apparently has slightly better image quality than the T3i (but it's not a noticeable difference). If you want the flippy-screen screen, get the T3i. Also consider the Nikon D3100 and D5100

I take MANY pictures with my digital camera, which has 12.2 mega pixels.
I want to take a step up, and get something better, to make my pictures more appealing, and professional looking.

Any suggestions?
please and thank you.

Answer
I would highly recommend getting something along the lines of a Canon T1i or even a used XSi. Even though the megapixels aren't too much higher than what you have now, the resolution will be like night and day. I started out with an XSi and have since moved onto a Canon 50D and here is what I've gotten from them (www.PhotographyByNC.com). The XSi lets you learn the basics without too much effort and from there you can move up to bigger and better things! A DSLR system will also allow you to specialize your lens selection for different uses (such as macro, portrait, telephoto, etc.) so the versatility really plays a factor as well.

As far as making your pictures look professional and such, that just comes down to research, learning, and practice. I learned most of what I know from reading forums such as Photography-on-the.net and fredmiranda.com

Hope this helps!

What digital camera would you recommend?

aetherboxx

I'm looking for a decent digital camera to use primarily for shooting flower arrangements against white backgrounds. Quality and focus are the major concerns here as most of the work will be closeup/macro. A good zoom lens and SLR are a plus for general purpose shooting. What camera(s) would you recommend in the under $600 price range?

Answer
I recommend to anyone seriously contemplating the purchase of a new digital SLR camera to consider these two primary questions:
1. How much money do you have to spend???? $500.? $800.? $1,500.?
2. What level of photography do you aspire to "progress to" in the coming years ? (i.e. basic beginner, intermediate, or professional/business use).
For most beginners to intermediates I usually suggest one of these two manufacturers: Canon vs Nikon

1. Canon EOS Rebel model XSi. (Also known as the Canon 450D in Britain) The "kit" package comes with an 18-55mm zoom lens. The camera has pop-up flash, 12.2 Megapixels, and shutter speeds up to 1/4000th, 100-1,600 ISO sensitivity, 7 auto exposure Scene modes, PLUS Shutter Priority, Aperture Priority and Programmed Exposure Modes and Manual. It also has a 3 inch LCD screen, 3.5 frames continuous per second max., 9 point AF system, Live View Functioning and the ability to record photos in 3, 6 or 12 Megapixels PLUS numerous other great features found only on more expensive cameras. Wal-Mart is also selling them now for about $799. Sam's Club also has them for $729. I also think that Amazon dot com has them for around $650.

I bought one of these 6 months ago and use it as my "back up" camera. I absolutely love it. I have gotten some fantastic photos with it and cannot praise it enough. I routinely enlarge my photos to make 8x10's and 11x14 size enlargements with no noticeable distortion or loss of detail in the pictures.

2. Nikon D-90: If you prefer to use Nikon equipment I strongly recommend the Nikon D-90 which has 12.3 Megapixels, 3 inch monitor with Live View, 200-3,200 ISO sensitivity, 11 point AF system with Face Priority, 4.5 frames per second in continuous mode, 5 advanced Scene modes for auto exposure plus Shutter Priority, Aperture Priority, Programmed Auto plus Manual. The D-90 sells for around $900-950. (Body ONLY. The 18-55mm lens cost an additional $150.-175.) Typically, Nikon equipment is slightly more expensive than Canon equipment, but (having owned both Nikon and Canon cameras), I have seldom noticed BETTER quality results using Nikon equipment.

You might also consider the Nikon D-40 ($499) kit that comes with the 18-55mm lens. Another great choice is the Nikon D-60 kit ($649) which also comes with the 18-55mm lens. All of these Nikon's can be found at Best Buy or Amazon dot com for a very low price.

These selections are probably the best choices for any beginner to intermediate skill level, offering the most lenses and other accessories, dealers and places to purchase. Both manufacturers have a good selection of macro lenses, which is just what you need for taking close up photos of flowers.

I strongly recommend that ALL beginners buy a good book on digital photography AND take a class or two from a Vocational school or Community Education Center in your area.
You can learn more about the technical specifications of each of these two cameras at these websites:

Anyone with normal intelligence and willingness to learn can learn to use one of these in a few hours. Really mastering photography will take a lot longer.

I need a camera that is good for recording live events with an audience, that will also allow me to edit.?

I prefer something that comes with the software for editing on PC, and I need to be able to make dvd's and upload to google or youtube. Will be used in comedy industry, so editing is most important. I prefer dvd recorders but am open to tape recorders. If the camera also takes still digital photo that would be great too.

Answer
There is no camcorder that comes with useful software for editing. The included video editing applications that are included in the box with any camcorder will typically be a "lite" version of some sort of low-end software. And the camcorder company does not know if you are a Windows XP, Vista, *nix, Macintosh or other operating system user.

Presuming you are a Windows or Vista user, MovieMaker can provide rudimentary editing if the video to be edited is in a format MovieMaker can deal with. In the Macintosh environment, iMovie can also provide a video editing environment that if the video is in a format that iMovie can deal with. These are much better than the anemic, reduced functionality software included in the box with any camcorder. For the *nix environment, there are several open source editors...

You "prefer" DVD recorders? In the consumer camcorder environment - for standard definition video capture, these compress video the most into DVD player format video. These are the most challenging to get into a format a video editor can deal with, typically provide short (20 minutes per "side" of the small 8cm DVD) for best video quality - and actually provide the worst quality video due to the high amount of compression.

If you want to edit, it is strongly suggested you stay in the flash memory, hard disc drive - or preferably - miniDV tape based camcorders. Most consumer camcorders can take stills as well - though they generally don't do a very good job.

For flash memory and hard disc drive standard definition camcorders, they typically save to a very high compressed MPEG2 file format. To edit the video, the first thing you need to do afer copying the video from the camcorder to the computer will generally be to convert - transcode - the video to a format the video editor can deal with.

For flash memory, hard disc drive and DVD based high definition camcorders, they typically save to a very high compressed AVCHD (MTS) file format. MovieMaker cannot deal with this. iMovie '08 or newer running on an Intel Mac can. For Windows/Vista, Sony Vegas or Adobe Premiere are good options. For more advanced editing on a Mac, the current versions of FinalVCut can also deal with AVCHD files.

For the most part, there are pretty much no flash memory, hard disc drive and DVD based with manual audio control. Most do not have a mic jack. Video is only part of the equation... Audio plays a large role. Controlling the audio is important.

In the miniDV tape based environment, the standard definition DV or high definition HDV video formats are the least compressed found in consumer cideo storage - and it continues to be the media of choice for professional videographers... for lots of reasons I won't go into detail here - but in addition to video quality and cheap storage and ease of editing... MovieMaker can deal with DV - but not HDV. iMovie has been able to deal with DV and HDV for several years at this point. To import video from a miniDV tape based camcorder, the computer needs to have a firewire port - firewire, IEEE1394 and i.LINK are all the same thing - and they are not USB. USB won' work. USB-to-firewire converter/adapter/hub/cable things won't work. If your computer does not have a firewire port and you are unwilling or unable to add one, then your only real option is to go with hard drive or flash memory media.

I am not a hard disc drive fan for a number of reasons and DVD based camcorders barely make useful doorstops, so I'll just stick with flash memory and miniDV tape...

So... What is your budget?

Entry consumer - standard definition only:
Flash memory: Canon FS series (FS100)
MiniDV tape: Canon ZR900, 930, 960
All have a mic jack - but no manual audio control

Mid consumer - standard definition and high definition:
Flash memory: Canon HF series; Sony HDR-CX series
MiniDV tape: Canon HV30; Sony HDR-HC9 (the HV30 and HC9 are the least expensive camcorders with a mic jack AND manual audio control)

Beyond this, all camcorders have a mic jack and manual audio control.
Prosumer - standard definition only:
MiniDV tape: Sony DCR-VX2100; Canon GL2
Prosumer - standard definition and high definition:
Sony HDR-FX1000
There is no flash memory prosumer camcorder (for that matter, there are no hard disc drive or DVD prosumer models, either - that should tell you something). Prosumer camcorders use a 1/8" stereo mic jack - use of XLR mics can happen with an XLR adapter like those form juicedLink or BeachTek. Prosumer lenses and imaging chips are typically larger than consumer-grade camcorders' which allows them to do well in low light environments - which could be your club situation. Small lenses and imaging chips in consumer grade camcorders will not do so well in low-light.

And then you get to the pro grade cams...
Canon XL series, XH series, XLH series; Sony HVR series (but not the HVR-HD1000 or the HVR-A1; Panasonic DVX series and HDX series...

In ALL cases, once you get

How much did a 1 megapixel digital camera cost in 2002?

canon digital camera timeline on Salvation 2: Hooman Khosravi: Galleries: Digital Photography Review
canon digital camera timeline image

time.mecha

What was the average cost?

Answer
I don't have any kind of real timeline other than my memory, but I believe the pixels were coming up by 2002. In the late 90s, the Sony Mavica range of digital cameras were about all there was available. They wrote to a floppy disc, and resolution was 1.5 megapixels if I remember correctly. Cost was near $1000. Photo quality was horrid, but it was digital, and had uses for web content and for putting small photos into Word documents.

Then as the new century rolled around, more point and shoot cameras started being produced. My first digital was a Nikon 990, 3.3 MP, which I got in early 2001. Cost was over $900 by the time I got a memory card and card reader. By the way, memory cards were VERY expensive at that time. A 2 gig CF card was an almost unheard of amount of storage, and it cost over $400. Most cards were only 256 MB or 512 MB. The Nikon 900 series of cameras were considered top of the line at the time, and even now can still give some decent photos. Most all cameras during this time frame were in the 2 MP area, so the 3.3 MP of the Nikon seemed really amazing.

DSLRs were almost non-existent. Canon was one of the first to produce a consumer DSLR, (it might have even been THE first). Anyway, the camera was the D30, and was 3 megapixels. I believe the price was over $5000 for the body. The D60 6 MP DSLR followed that, which was my first DSLR, which I still have and use. It became almost a cult item and was very hard to obtain. I had to pay almost $2500 for mine in 2002.

As each year has passed, cameras have become more prolific, much cheaper, and in most cases better.

Hope that is of some help to you.

steve

how do i upload videos from my Sony DCRSR57E Handycam Camcorder to PC or Mac ?

Q. Hi I brought a Sony DCRSR57E Handycam Camcorder from amazon about 4 months ago and it came with no lead or anything to transfer videos. Now I really need to upload on either Windows PC or Mac I have both so please help, thank you !

Answer
If you check the manual
http://pdf.crse.com/manuals/4124309111.pdf
refer to page 5 - "Supplied items". USB cable is one of them. Item B. The other is the AV cable to connect to a TV to watch playback of captured video.

This is the same USB cable that is used by lots of consumer grade "personal electronics" like cell phones, MP3 or other multimedia players... Mini-USB on one side connects to the camcorder's USB port (see page 23 for location on the camcorder) and the other is a "normal" sized USB connector for the computer. I have used the USB cable that came with my BlackBerry to transfer media files from Sony camcorders and Apple iPods and Canon digital still cameras... to my Macs and HP computers.

Generally, when you put the camcorder in Play mode (be sure to plug the camcorder to power mains, too), the hard drive will mount like any other USB-connected external mass storage device.

The Sony standard def hard drive (and flash memory) camcorders record to a MPG file type - many times, the computer's operating system and video editor cannot deal with these files directly. This may not be the easiest way, but it is the most consistent and flexible...

Download and install HandBrake
http://handbrake.fr/
Copy the MPG files to the computer.
Launch HandBrake and transcode the MPG files to something the video editor can deal with. Lower compression is better - but the files will be large.
Windows Movie Maker likes WMV files and Macintosh iMovie likes MOV and MP4 files (among others).
When the transcoding is done, Quit HandBrake and launch the video editor.
Drag the transcoded files to the capture area or timeline (or "clips" pane)... edit. Save.
Export or Save As whatever final video file type and compression you want (and the video editor is capable of providing).

What is the best digital camera for me?

Kcolors

I need a digital camera that will be good for taking pictures outdoors. As I live in Canada it gets cold here, so a durable camera is a must... Also I don't want a really thin one as I always tend to drop those :p. I really liked the Fujifilm Finepix XP20 14.2 MP, until I read the ratings and found out it was a terrible camera. Any ideas??

Answer
Take a look at the Canon PowerShot SX150 IS, its a good camera with features like; 12x Wide-Angle optical zoom and 28mm lens with optical image stabilizer, 14.1 megapixel image sensor and DIGIC 4 image processor, 720p HD video in stereo sound, large 3.0-Inch wide LCD viewing screen and movie digest mode records video clips before shooting a photo. I would also recommend you read this review by an actual owner to see his opinions on the performance of the camera:

I'm looking for a basic digital camera for everyday use, like for just around the house and for small day trips to the surrounding mountains. Who do think makes the best budget point-and-shoot digital camera (under a $150). I'm not looking for anything complicated since I am a camera newbie, as well.

Answer
You get exactly what you pay for. If you are not willing to invest more on your camera, be prepared to be frustrated. Getting a more capable (and more expensive) camera means increasing your chances of getting better pictures.

If you decide to go for quality, these are the three you have to select from in simple, point-and-shoot cameras. Canon, because from experience, they know what they're doing. Sony, because they overwhelm their cameras with features. Lumix, because they use the highly regarded Leica lens.

What is the best digital point & shoot camera with a viewfinder on a budget?

Curious In

Opinions/ experiences invited for a camera under $150 with a viewfinder to use for casual vacation pics? I am currently looking at the Canon Powershot A1400 for $110. Any other suggestions will be appreciated...thanks!

Answer
The Nikon P510 and P520 both have view finders. They are called bridge cameras because they have both fully auto modes like a point and shoot but they also have manual modes such as P,A,S,M like a DSLR. Bridge cameras also have a similar appearance to a DSLR but in a smaller package.

Canon S5 IS digital cameras made in Japan or China. Is there a difference, if so what???

Big B-Man

I've been looking on Ebay for this digital camera. People always ask if it's made in Japan or China. Is quality better or is it just loyalty for ones own country? Please help on this matter. Thanks Yahoo Ask members.

Answer
Canon makes cameras where it is cheapest. They do not have 1 factory in Japan and another in China making the same camera. This is a myth. Just buy the S5 if dats what U want. Old salesman trick: oh, don't get the Chinese version, you want the expensive Japanese version. If they try dat with U, find another store.
