Answer
Before you decide, check out the information below. Canon seems to have the edge on Nikon when it comes to price/performance, but both are really great cameras brands.

There is no one particular place to get great buys, but you may see something below that really helps you find the best buy. Click on the first link in the information below for an example then search for your camera of choice at the upper left. Camera prices at this link change often.

This may not be an SLR, but Canon seems to make the best cameras for the money. Just saw this camera at Best Buy and think it is a great camera and a best buy. It has an optical viewfinder, image stabilizer, auto focus, and uses NiMH rechargeable batteries. Read as much of the following as you can for other information and help with choosing a camera.
Canon A590IS $149.99 at Best Buy store yesterday.
http://bountii.com/deal-1523871-canon-powershot-8-0-megapixel.html ...

There are so many cameras out there it is difficult to say which is best, but digital is definitely the way to go. The second source link will be very helpful as it list most of the cameras out there with prices. The following information should help you know what to look for in a camera.

What gives a camera its picture quality?
The short answer is that it is mostly the skill of the photographer that produces high quality pictures. The lens and camera are very important, but the ability to set the scene, adjust the cameras settings, and hold the camera very still or use a tripod with auto or remote shutter actuation when required is what gets the great pictures.

Many of the new cameras come with only an LCD screen which is almost impossible to see in bright sun so you should try to find one that also has an optical view finder.

Check replacement battery prices when buying a new camera. Some proprietary batteries cost almost as much as the camera and may be only good for 200 shots between charges.

Higher mega pixels may not really be the best thing to look for. It is more expensive, takes longer to process, and may not be needed unless you are making a really large picture or blowing up a small part of a picture. Maximum print size for a 3 mega pixel setting is 8 x 10 inches.

Wide-angle shooting, a 12x optical zoom and picture stabilization mode combine in this camera for exceptional shooting performance, even at a distance. Plentiful scene modes, autofocus and automatic white balance controls make this camera a snap to operate. You may be able to find it on the Internet for a lower price.

The information about my camera is just to show that you don't need the biggest and best. Just know how to use the one you have.
My camera has 5.2 mega pixel, but I use 3 most of the time because it gives great results, is faster, and takes less memory. Also, it only has a 3 x optical zoom and 7x digital zoom. I never use the digital zoom because making pictures larger works better on the computer. This is an old camera, but everyone is impressed with the quality pictures it takes ... like magic.

Check with the Geeks in several stores and compare prices. Ask what cameras they own, but don't believe everything you hear. Once you select a camera read all about it in the owner's manual. Just learned that my camera has red-eye prevention and correction. It also has adaptive lighting. You may be able to view owners manuals at this link, but will need to Login. http://www.retrevo.com/s/digital+camera ...

The source links will show most of the cameras out there with prices and help make your digital cameras work better.

I wanted to buy DIGITAL CANNON camera
any body tell me what things i keep in mind while purchasing
how much Pixels, screen size and type, colour (not matter),weight and every thing thats in your mind and experience.and campany if better then cannon.

Answer
Any of the new Canon cameras have enough resolution for the average user

Screen size is personal preference

I dont know what you mean "type". If its camera type for $140 or less youll only get a point n shoot

Weight, size, color are all personal preference

Your price range limits your choices. Compare these

Canon PowerShot A480 $99

Canon PowerShot A490 $109

Canon PowerShot A3000IS $144

Of these I would choose the A1100IS or SD1200IS. Both have an optical viewfinder which is easier to use in bright sunlight than the LCD

From what I've heard from photographers, Canon is the best brand. I'm looking into buying a Canon digital camera in the $300 or under price range.. any recomendations to one that takes quality photos, and is a good camera altogether?

Answer
Well Canon is the only brand I would consider. It consistently gets top marks, and I have had mostly very good experiences from the brand.
All cameras have an auto mode which means the camera will choose the aperture and shutter speed depending on lighting conditions. Others also have manual controls where you can be a bit more creative and have a little more control of certain settings.
It really depends on what sort of photographer you are and what experience you have...

There are 3 Canon cameras I am really liking at the moment and would recommend either.......(not including the digital slr cams of course!)
A good choice is the fairly compact A620, which has 7.1MP, 4x zoom, excellent image quality and has a very handy flip out and twist (vari-angle) LCD screen. The reviews for this cam have been very positive.
The new S3 IS, is a bit larger in size and has 12x optical zoom, 6MP, optical image stabilization and takes very good video in stereo sound...probably not a good choice for an absolute beginner.
Another one which i am liking the sound of is the new Powershot SD 700 IS/or Digital Ixus 800 IS in some countries. It has 6 MP, 4X zoom and is primarily a point and shoot camera, with limited manual control, takes excellent quality pics, is extremely compact and has the added benefit of having optical image stabilization to lessen the chance of blurry pics. It would be the sort of cam you could carry with you all the time, say in your pocket or handbag.
Just remember though, that most digital camera pics need some sort of post processing via Adobe Photoshop or Paint Shop Pro or other software on your computer to get the best results. Check out these sites for an insight into different cameras...

I just got a canon digital camera model a720. This camera also takes short videos...I read the instruction manual, 2 times.
How do I get the videos off of the camera and to the computer?
Step by step please?

Answer
I don't know your camera's exact model but this is what I do for my cannon,
a) Pop the memory card out (should be an flap ont he side of your camera that you can push the card in and it then pops out)
b) you then insert it into your computer, or an external memory card reader which hooks into your computer via a USB port.
c) go to 'my computer' click your memory card and navigate to your video that you took and copy / cut and then paste it into a folder on your computer.
Voila, theres one way to do it. :-D

Number 2
a) your camera should have come with software (on a CD) and a cable.
b) install the software
c) hook your cable into your camera
d) do the same thing you do for taking off your pictures but somewhere in the stpes there should be an option to take the videos off the camera or take the pictures, choose videos.

Way 3 (this is just an idea, I'm not 100% sure on this one)
a) take that cable used in way 2 and plug in your camera to your computer, then you might be able to navigate from my computer to your camera and pull the files off similarly to way 1.

If you didn't get a CD or cable with your camera, then you need to return the camera or go ask the store that you bought it from. If you have a memory card slot on your computer (which many new computers do have) then use that, it's the easiest way to pull pictures, and videos off your camera.

Hope that was helpful ;-)

canon digital cameras?

Q. hey i've been looking to find a new digital camera. i love taking pictures of things whether it's my friends and me or flowers. i want something w/ nice zoom and that makes good quality pics. i also would like a canon camera...i think they're really good. can anyone tell me a nice canon digital camera that isn't too much money? i mean something below like 400...300 would be my highest probably! i like slim and small so that it fits in my purse and i also said that i like nice zoom...any ideas? thnx :-)
ya well i just want something that has better zoom than the crappy sony one i have now! i'd be happy w/ 4 or 5x zoom it doesn't have to be like 10x or whatever! i need better zoom because i take closeup photos of flowers and other things like that...i think i'm pretty good
but the sony makes the pics come out all fuzzy and everything...my dad's works much better
plus i'm going to france w/ my school in two years when i'm in tenth grade so i'd want something small and not too big so i can put it in a little purse or something

Answer
I LOVE my Canon PowerShot A620. It's a 7.1 mp camera which takes awesome still shots, and just as awesome video. Great for vacation and home use. A great all-around camera.

I had a Sony, and I gave that to my daughter, and purchase the Canon PowerShot A610 for my teenage son. The Canon A610 is exactly like my A620, but is a 5 mp digital camera. They both take GREAT pictures, but my favorite thing about the camera, is the vari-angle LCD screen. It is very easy to use, and a camera you can grow with.

I'm a bargain hunter. I purchased both NEW Canon this past late spring. My son's was under $200 and mine was $204. Just Google or Yahoo! Search for Canon A620, then for the merchant with the best price, and order on-line. The price is waaaay better than going physically to the stores. If you need it right away, just upgrade the shipping. It's still cheaper than buying at the stores. No matter what model camera you're searching for, better prices are on-line.

One of my favorite settings our A610/A620 has is,called "kids&pets". Typically you use these on the subjects that usually has a hard time keeping still. But I also use this setting when taking pictures of my soccer team during game play. I've also taken pictures of my kids, nieces and nephews jumping in the air, a la cheerleader jumps, with great results. Lag time is very, very, very minimal. (i.e. delay from pressing button to actual camera capturing the shot).

I don't know if you'll find these models at the stores. They have newer models, the A630 (8mp) and the A640 (10mp), they boast more mega-pixels. But 5mp, more than suffices for most users. What I did was physically touched and feel the camera at the store, then go on-line to purchase.

Here is the link if you'd like to check out the specs on these Canon cameras: http://www.usa.canon.com
and go to 'products' to 'consumer products' to lead you to the cameras. Check out the zoom on this and other Canon models.

While you're searching on-line, you'll also find many reviews on these cameras. All raving about the camera. You'll also find information on these cameras in Yahoo! Tech.

Hope this helps.

Do I need a special flash for my Nikon Digital Camera?

guru2u

I need a larger flash for my Nikon Coolpix 4500 digital Camera with a hot shoe, and would love to be able to use the trusty Vivitar Thrysistor 283 that worked so well with my old SLR, but the Nikon manual warns that flashes not specifically made for Nikon Digital Cameras may damage the camera through some kind of electronic feedback. Are they just trying to sell me a $300 flash unit, or is this a valid concern?

Answer
Yup, it is possible for an old flash to fry a camera due to the trigger voltages. You can check this site for more info on that http://www.botzilla.com/photo/strobeVolts.html. Cross reference your flash against the table there.

In any case, using an older flash would probably mean a loss of i-ttl (for nikon) or e-ttl (for canon). You would need to use auto/manual flash then. In addition, the camera may also act funny (e.g. my old metz on my canon 20D will always give me a 1/200 f5.6 on program mode. I have to use it in manual mode instead.

Good Canon digital camera?

I already have the zoom and standard lens from my rebel g camera which I assume would be interchangeable with a digitial camera??? so am wondering what a good digital camera model would be (also Canon) that would give professional type results. I need high pixels so that I can submit photos to a professional stock photo site.

Answer
The previous poster's recommendation would be good if you did not need a digital SLR, but you will need one if you want to use those lenses. To answer your first question, you will be able to use them as long as they are EF mount lenses. You can tell by looking on the lens box most of the time.

Again, to use your lenses, you will need a digital SLR. Canon offers several high megapixel options at varying price points. Depending on your definition of "high megapixels", here are some recommendations. Let's just say you need 10 megapixels or higher.

There is a digital SLR available from Canon at every level (entry level, prosumer, and professional) that is 10 megapixels or higher.

10 megapixels: 400D ($800), 40D ($1200), 1DMarkIII ($4500)
12 megapixels: 5D ($2600)
16 megapixels: 1Ds Mark II ($7000)
22 megapixels: 1Ds Mark III ($8000, ships in October)

If these are all out of your price range, you may have to give up lens interchanging capability for a conventional digital point and shoot. The A640 (10mp) and Powershot G9 would be worth looking at, too.

Can the Canon PowerShot A495 10.0 Megapixel Digital Camera film good quality videos for youtube?

Raphael Ho

im thinking about getting the Canon PowerShot A495 10.0 Megapixel Digital Camera for my birthday and i want it to know if it works with windows moviemaker(im not converting all that file stuff) and is it good quality for youtube videos?( i make videos of beyblade battles on youtube.)

Answer
Most of Canon's newer model cameras, particularly the ones that record movies in HD or Full HD, only record movies in Quicktime MOV (H.264). This file type is NOT compatible with Windows Movie Maker.

However, the A495, being the entry level model it is, does actually record movies in the AVI format...which is fully compatible with Movie Maker.

Movies are only recorded in a standard VGA resolution of 640x480...not HD or Full HD.

Here is an excerpt from the official press release...
"In addition to high-quality images, both the PowerShot A495 and the PowerShot A490 are able to capture video at VGA resolution with sound. Both also feature a YouTube⢠upload function in the supplied software package â providing the capacity to log-in and upload directly from the camera to the Internet via a computer. This enables video to be shared online for friends to see within minutes of being captured."

Which entry level DSLR?

Indian H

Hi,

Earlier I've posted many questions here. I'm an amateur-hobbyist photographer wishing to become an enthusiast. My understanding of these three terms islike this:

Amateur: Shooting an average of 10 rolls per month with a manual SLR and 2-3 lens combo

Hobbyist: Sending some of the pics to national and state level competitions (won a couple of titles in India)

Enthusiast: Would like to spend a percentage of dedicated time per month towards photography (but not making a livelihood out of it as a professional photographer)

I've used Fully Manual SLRs viz. Pentax K1000, K2000 etc. Later tried various point and shoot digital cameras like Nikon P80 and various Sony cybsershots. Now I want to step into the world of Digital SLRs and I'm not able to make up my decision. I need you people's advise which is technical and logical.

Coming to my question:
I've done some good research on Nikon D40-300 series and some on Canon Rebel series DLSRs.
Somehow for reasons unknown to me, I'm not able to consider the brands like Olympus and Panasonic.

I'd like to know which one of the options below is good. Feel free to make modifications to any of these if that can give me better deal.

1. Investing on entry level D40 with a good set of lenses like 18-55 and 55-200 is sufficient (or)
2. Investing one time on a good amateur camera like D300 immediately (or)
3. Going for mid range like D90 with entry level lens (or)
4. Entry level Canon Rebel DSLR with default lens (or)
5. Any other suggestion from professionals like you.

I cannot invest more than $600 initially. But can stretch by another $300 if any one of you can convince me for a higher end model with some technical points.

Thanks in advance,
Indian

Answer
Your budget should be for more than just the camera. Your initial shopping list should include the following:

1) Camera body
2) Lens(es) appropriate for the kinds of photography you want to do
3) Memory card(s)
4) Carrying bag/pouch/case with room to grow

Probably should get:
5) Tripod for stability and clarity in night shots, landscapes, macros, panoramic stitches

Optional; depending on your intent:
6) Polarising filter (to give more saturation and less glare in outdoor daylight shots)
7) Extra battery
8) Additional lighting for professional looking portraits

With a 1.6x crop body, the most oft-used lens focal range will be between 28-75mm. The kit lens that comes with a camera will usually cover most of this range. To extend the camera capabilities outside of this range will require you to purchase additional lenses. These lenses can range in price from around $200 to over $1000 each. The lenses are usually mostly compatible with other cameras from that same company.

If you shoot landscapes and buildings, you might want to look at a Tokina 11-16mm f/2.8 (available both Canon and Nikon).

If you shoot insects, plants, textures... you will want to look at a 60 to 200mm macro lens that is capable of 1:1

If you shoot portraits, you may want to look at a 50mm f/1.4 lens.

If you shoot distant wildlife, you will need a 200-300mm telephoto lens.

A Nikon D40 with the 55-200 VR is a good deal and a nice place to start. Canon does not have an entry level package that compares to this in terms of price/value. The closest match to a D40 is the Canon Rebel XTi/400D.

Canon does have the most variety in terms of available extensions and lenses overall. If you have to decide between Canon and Nikon systems, I would have to tell you to go to the store and hold each model in your hands. Try the controls and shooting some pictures with them to see which is most comfortable and which you can manage the controls with most easily.

Then consider if you have friends or family who have already invested in one or other system. Could you share experiences and extensions with them?

Good luck!

I want your guidance on DSLR & Lens available ?

phatkar

I want to purchase DSLR, I am new to digital photography & want to purchase one good camera along with one lens.

Mainly I want to use it for day to day photography, surely not for fashion or wildlife photography.

After looking at catalogues related to cameras & lens, I am confused & not able to make my decision.

I like canon EOS 400D & 450D with good zoom capabilities (may be 30X) but not sure about Nikon & I have no idea about lens & its functions.

Can all masters here suggest me one ??

Budget 30000 Indian Rupees

Answer
The Canon 400D and 450D are very good cameras. The 450D is newer and it has more megapixels, a slightly larger LCD screen, and it has Live-View (which lets you use the LCD screen to take pictures). These are minor improvements, but nice to have. The image quality and all of the other important things are the same.

Canon also makes a 1000D model. The 1000D is also newer than the 400D, but these two cameras are almost identical. And like the 400D, it is cheaper than the 450D.

Personally, I think that the only real advantage of the 450D is the slightly larger LCD screen. I would not pay the higher price for that. (In the USA the price difference between the 400D and 450D is $80.)

Instead, I would get either the 400D or the 1000D - whichever one you can find cheaper in India. In the USA the price is almost the same... because the camera is almost the same.

Lenses...

All three of these cameras can be purchased as a kit with the Canon 18-55mm zoom lens. This is only 3x zoom, but that is enough for about 80% of what most people photograph. You can buy lenses with a lot more zoom range, but that would go over your budget. For example, Canon has an 18-200mm zoom (11x zoom) and Tamron has an 18-270mm zoom (15x zoom) for Canon cameras. (This Tamron lens has the biggest zoom range of any lens for a dSLR camera. A 30x zoom lens does not even exist.)

If you want to get the most zoom range within your budget, purchase the camera with two lenses: the 18-55mm and either an inexpensive 55-200mm lens or a cheap 70-300mm lens. But since you do not mention anything that requires a lot of zoom range, I would start out with simply the 18-55mm lens. You can always purchase an additional lens later on.

Nikon...

The Nikon D60 and the cheaper D40 are also within your budget. The D40 is actually cheaper than all of the Canon models, but it is also the least advanced of all of these options. Still, even the D40 can produce fantastic images. The only thing that it really misses compared to the rest, is that it only has 6 megapixels. This matters if you want to create large prints (larger than a full page) but otherwise it's not that important - the number of pixels says nothing about image quality.

If you have the opportunity, compare some of these cameras in your hands at a camera shop. You might find that you prefer the way a particular brand feels or works. If so, let that be the deciding factor, because this image quality and the important functions are the same with all (five!) of these cameras.

If price alone is the deciding factor, I would get the Nikon D40. It is perfectly good and it is the cheapest of the bunch. This would leave the most money for (extra) lenses or other items.

Best Camera - Beginner Photographer?

Michi

I have no clue about camera types, or anything of the sort. But I am wanting to become a photographer. I know that I'll eventually have to learn through schooling or self taught. But I need a camera now to at least get some pictures out there, lol.

I found something at Walmart.com that I think would be alright. I'm not shooting pictures for a professional anything. I really just want to build up my portfolio first. So, I don't need anything fancy, but I DO need something better than a Kodak Easy Share, lol.

So here's the link, since there's too much to post here, lol.

Thanks in advanced to all who post helpful things. :)

http://www.walmart.com/Nikon-D40-Digital-SLR-Camera-18-55mm-Lens/ip/5607412

Answer
Nikon D60 is a great camera, and don't let anyone tell you it's only for beginners. The images that the D60 produces easily rival that of more expensive cameras. When you spend less money on the D60, you are sacrificing a few bells & whistles but not necessarily image quality.

It has all the manual settings you'd expect in an SLR and a very easy-to-navigate (and nice-looking) menu system. The LCD screen is big and bright, and the viewfinder is great as well.

What it's missing (at least when compared to higher end models) and why you don't necessarily need those things:

- No auto-focus on non-AF-S/AF-I lenses. Unless you already have a bunch of old Nikon lenses, this shouldn't be a problem. Just make sure any lens you buy in the future is an AF-S or AF-I.

- No Live View. This is only just becoming standard on higher end cameras and on the ones I have tried I have found it very "clunky" anyway. "Live View" is a hallmark of compact point & shoot cameras, and I think that's where it belongs... at least for now. SLRs are just made for shooting with the viewfinder. It just feels better on a camera like this. If you *need* Live View, look at the Sony SLRs. They seem to implement that feature best.

- Only 3 auto focus points. The D80 has 11, the Canon XSi has 9, blah, blah, blah. Three is enough for most people... heck, one is enough for most people. Yes, having more is nice, but honestly if you are a beginner and don't understand what the benefit of more AF points might even be, you don't need them.

- No exposure bracketing. A helpful feature for making HDR images, but even then it is not necessary.

Those are the biggies. I have my own little nit picks, like:

- No dedicated buttons for ISO or white balance (you can program the Fn button to do it, but it's nice to have a seperate button).

- RAW+JPEG setting only allows you to record a "basic" quality JPEG.

- The ViewNX software supplied with the camera sucks for processing RAW images. If you are going to shoot RAW, get something better like Nikon's CaptureNX, Adobe Camera Raw for Photoshop or Lightroom, or something similar. If those aren't in your budget, RAW Therapee is a great open source RAW processing application. It's light years better than ViewNX in this regard, and it is 100% free of charge!

Now for the major perks:

- The D60 inherits features like Active D-Lighting and Expeed processing from the (much more expensive) D3 and D300 pro SLRs, which the D40 and D40x do not have. Look those things up to see what the benefits are. D-Lighting is subtle, but effective.

- The new kit lens with VR (vibration reduction, Nikon's term for image stabilization) which allows for sharp pictures in lower light conditions when using slower shutter speeds. The D40/D40x have a non-VR version of the same lens. In my opinion, this is the best "kit" lens when compared to what the competition is currently offering (in terms of overall image quality).

- Auto focus assist lamp. Trust me, it's a simple little thing but you'll love having it.

- FAST auto focus (even with those three piddly AF points =)

- Big, bright LCD and viewfinder.

- Superb build quality. Feels much more "pro" in your hand than it's plastic-y competitors.

- Great high ISO performance. Perfectly usable shots at ISO 1600. ISO 3200 is worse, but you could still use it in a pinch and get decent results and small prints. I've printed a couple 8x10s from ISO 1600 shots that look fantastic.

- Which brings me to the most important feature: stellar image quality. Go find sample images online and see for yourself. Forget those chart & graph test shots. Look for real-world samples of real people/things -- that's where you'll really be able to see the D60 shine!

I love my D60. I have been shooting with it every day since I bought it a month ago and have no regrets. It truly is a great camera to learn on for the SLR beginner, but is just as good for those of us with a little experience who are on a budget and don't see the above "cons" as deal breakers. Just buy the thing and go make some beautiful photos

best lighting for self portrait with canon digital camera?

LuvlyBee

okay, so i have to do this self portrait for photo class and i need help doing it
my biggest problem is the lighting. my teacher really didn't teach us anything about how to arrange light, nothing! i know there are different types of lighting: Rembrandt, Broad, Butterfly, etc, but i can't seem to do them right. every time i do a picture I just look weird!

which lighting is best for someone of african american descent? i's say i'm a more medium brown over dark brown.

so your help would be greatly appreciated

advice and tips in:

makeup

lighting

hair styles

smile vs no smiling

backdrop/ background

another note: i have a canon powershot sd750 digital elph, so any settings on the camera i should do that you think would help, would be greatly appreciated as well.

Answer
You probably don't have the lighting to even setup in any of the lighting diagrams anyway. So I'd just totally forget about all for now.

I'd keep it as simple as possible. If you have something like a clamp light, the kind you can get at walmart or home depot, that would be optimum. The kind you can screw in a regular style light bulb and had the metal reflector on it. A good sturdy clamp is very good to have, or someone to hold it. Get a flood bulb about 120 or 150watts. Brighter is better.

You'll need to set the timer or have a remote or have someone push the button. I think as long as you compose and light the shot, that qualifies as a self portrait in my book.

You probably should have something kinda dark in the background. Shooting it at night with a uniform, not distracting background behind you is good. Even outside works, so long as there aren't any stray lights around or in the background. Turn a little to one side or the other and point the light to the side of your face that is not facing the camera. You'll probably want it 4 or 5 feet away from you, focused on your face as much as possible. You may have to move it a little closer to make it less dispersed. You want one side of your face lit pretty well and the other side almost not at all BUT you want your other eye to show up some. You almost have to aim the light at your short side eye so that it carries across the bridge of your nose enough to light the broad side eye a little. The broad side is the side that's facing the camera. This should light pretty much just your face and maybe a little of your hair. This is all you really want lit.

Camera settings... flash defintely off. You want to set the exposure value (EV) to -1.0 to start with and put it in just a regular mode. If this isn't working well for you, you might have to try night portraits but I'm not sure if you can turn off the flash in this mode. If you can, then maybe start there. Set the ISO to 100 and take a pic or two. The picture is going to kind of dark. You want it to be but you have to have the shutter speed to support a still shot. If the shutter is slower than 1/60 sec, and the shot is pretty much just showing your face, maybe turn the ISO up a couple notches. Ideally it would be around 1/125 sec. This is where the brightness of the light factors in. You can also change the EV if its too bright to -1.3 or whatever works. This also speeds up the shutter some, so try to only change one thing at a time.

I'd keep the expression somber / serious, the makeup slightly heavier than normal OR just lipstick... not sure how your complexion is. Hair almost doesn't matter at all. You want it to be pretty much black behind you. You don't need to define too much when the majority of the portrait is dark. You can crop this how you see fit, or zoom in to take the shot. You can put yourself however you see fit in the finished picture. If you want to look isolated, make yourself small. Lots of negative space that way. If you want yourself bigger and more focal... make it look more like a headshot.

Good Luck.

Canon digital SLR camera?

Fire Away

I've been looking at DSLR cameras and I was wondering what some other people thought of this camera. If I wanted a better macro or wide lens, would they be easy to purchase and use? What would be a good size of memory for this? This price range is good. What else do you think?

http://www.costco.com/Browse/Product.aspx?Prodid=11305081&whse=BC&topnav=&browse=&lang=en-US&s=1

Answer
That is a good camera, yes. That lens isn't a really good lens, but it will be fine in a lot of light. This isn't a fast lens, so you wouldn't take it to concerts, or use it for sunsets hand-held. Yes, macro lenses for your camera are easy to find, but expensive. You will have to save up a few hundred for a good one. That is a good camera. The kit lens is a good lens too, and it facilitates Image Stabilization.

That is a good price.

I want to buy a nice digital camera before my baby is born, and was wondering what you like and dislike about it. And if it takes good and professional looking pictures (especially of people)

Answer
Or - get a Nikon D40. The mode dial even offers a "Child" mode. They say, "Use for snapshots of children. Clothing and background details are vividly rendered while skin tones are given a soft natural finish. The camera [automatically] selects the focus area containing the closest subject."

http://www.popphoto.com/cameras/3756/camera-test-nikon-d40.html
http://www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/d40/d40-recommendations.htm

You can get the D40 with the 18-55 kit lens at B&H Photo (available through Yahoo! Shopping or at 1-800-622-4987) for $550 (May 2007) and this is with TWO Lexar 1 GB cards. You can get the same kit with one Lexar Platinum (higher speed) card for $560.

If you are going to go with Canon, I will agree with KoKo and say that you ought to get the Rebel XTi, as long as you are taking the plunge. The XT with the "standard" 18-55 lens and a 2 GB memory card will cost you $630 and the XTi set up the same way will cost you $790.

Gee. The D40 doesn't look so bad next to those prices, does it? (haha)

Good Priced Digital Camera?

Nikki

Anyone know of a decent priced digital camera for an 11 year old boy? He is just starting out with a digital camera so we don't need anything too extravagant and we also want something durable. Any help would be awesome.

Answer
While most of the cameras out there are really good, I would choose Canon over Nikon because it seems like more camera for the money. Some would say Canon withholds their best technology for high end cameras and Nikon implements their best at all levels. Before you decide, read all the text and links in the information below because it will help you know what to look for in a camera.

There is no one particular place to get great buys, but you may see something below that really helps you find the best buy. Click on the first link in the information below for an example then search for your camera of choice at the upper left. Camera prices at this link change often.

Just saw this camera at Best Buy and think it is a great camera and a best buy. It has an optical viewfinder, image stabilizer, auto focus, and uses NiMH rechargeable batteries. Read as much of the following as you can for other information and help with choosing a camera.

The information about my camera is just to show that you don't need the biggest and best. Just know how to use the one you have.

My camera has 5.2 mega pixel, but I use 3 most of the time because it gives great results, is faster, and takes less memory. Also, it only has a 3 x optical zoom and 7 x digital zoom.

Focus with shutter button halfway down before taking pictures. In low light, focus on a lighted object at same distance as the subject. To prevent low-light, motion-blurred pictures; use flash "on" (not auto) up to 12 feet or place camera on a tripod or table and use self timer. Check camera shooting modes for special situations. Best light for photos is early morning or evening.

The Canon A590IS is a slightly older model that is available everywhere at great sale prices. Think it is a great camera and a best buy. It has auto focus, a viewfinder, optical image stabilization, and uses rechargeable NiMH batteries.

You may never need expanded wide angle or telephoto capabilities, but the A590 IS is compatible with Canon's accessory lens adapters: A small button next to the lens bezel is actually a latch; press it and you can remove the bezel ring, exposing a bayonet mount for accessory lenses. Canon offers the WC-DC52 0.7x wide-angle lens, the TC-DC52A telephoto lens, the 250D 52mm closeup lens separately, along with the LA-DC52G adapter to mount them on the camera. (Note that the wide, tele, and macro lenses all need the LA-DC52G adapter to mount them to the camera. The lenses won't work by themselves.)

Most NiMH rechargeable batteries lose charge and should be recharged when not used after two weeks, but Duracell and RayOVac new formula 2000mAh NiMH batteries hold charge one year when not used. Also, 2000mAh batteries seem to have a longer life. Did not like these batteries at first, but have 12 over five years old and all are still as good as new. Higher mAh batteries (about one year old) still work well in flashlights, but won't start my camera.

CAUTION Do not overcharge! Batteries can be damaged. Use an automatic two or more hour Energizer Compact smart charger with temperature monitor, trickle charge technology, and safety timer ($9.76) at Walmart. I have a Canon digital camera IS. While cleaning the camera I pressed the on/off button & get a message "lens error , restart camera". The lens doesn't close now. Have I messed up with my camera? Any help?

Answer
Here are some troubleshooting steps that you can try that may (or may not) correct your problem. They only seem to work for less than 40% of the lens errors, but if the camera is out of warranty (or repair cost approaches that of the camera), they're worth that try. Some of the later steps do involve some risk to the camera, so carefully weigh your options before deciding to conduct them:

Can a Canon EOS 5D Mark II Camera Digital considered a PROFESSIONAL camera?

edchaves77

Answer
First off, any camera can be a professional camera when used by a pro. The 5DMII certainly is used by many pros. However I'll assume that what you are really asking is for the differences that make a camera be considered 'pro' rather than advanced amateur. Typically those have a lot to do with the durability of the camera and only somewhat to do with the features. Can the shutter handle 100s of thousands of actuations? How good is the weather sealing? How solid is the frame? How much flexibility is built into the camera software aimed at pros's workflow? An example of the last item can be something as simple as being able to better organize directories and image names. Examples of the other categories are found by looking at the 1D Mark III specs. It is very definitely a pro camera despite being only 10mp and 1.3x (halfway between APS and 35mm). When we look at the specs we see entries like:

... 10 fps, with a burst rate up to 110 full-resolution JPEG images or 30 RAW images
... AF system with 19 user-selectable AF points and 26 additional "assist points";
...enhanced weather resistance and outstanding reliability: featuring a shutter that's durability-tested to 300,000 exposures.

The 5D with 21mp and full 35mm coverage is way advanced on those items. However, it has 9 AF points compared to 45 for the 1DMIII, it has 35 zone TTL metering compared to the 63 zones on the 1DMIII and of course the 5DMII has a 150,000 actuation shutter vs the 300,000 of the 1DMIII.

Bottom line to the question is that the 5D is a very advanced amateur camera that is *very* suitable for professional use but doesn't quite meet the durability and features that marks a pro camera.

The 21mp pro camera is the 1DsMIII which is $7000. I would probably choose the 5DMII saving $4500 and getting the video capability, but the 1DsMIII is a more solid camera.

Is the EOS 5D Canon's only full frame digital camera?

Julia B

I'm thinking of buying a new Digital SLR body. I would like a full-frame camera, and wondered if anyone knew of any in the Canon range which have a full frame sensor (35mm) other than the 5D (and 5D mark 2!)

Thanks.

Answer
The 5D Mark II one of two current full-frame cameras from Canon. The other is the 1Ds Mark III which is the current version of Canon's top-of-the-line professional DSLR. The original 1Ds was the first full-frame DSLR ever offered to the market in 2002 and the original 5D was the first full-frame offered to the market for less than $7000 in 2005.

It may be five years old and only offer ISO 50-3200 but, the image quality of the original 5D still rivals that of any current DSLR so if you want to move to full-frame and haven't already invested in upgraded lenses, you might consider picking up a used 5D for less than $1500. Remember that any EF-s lenses you might have are NOT compatible with the 5D, 5D Mark II or 1D/1Ds series cameras.

What is the best digital camera for my needs?

Anna!

Help!? I need a thin, digital camera that is good for taking awesome videos (sound, picture, etc) and pictures at concerts, but is also good for taking crisp, close-up pictures of friends and family. Any suggestions of a camera or ones that i should stay away from?

Answer
Canon A590IS $134.99 at Best Buy or $116.30 at Amazon.com

There are so many cameras out there it is difficult to say which is best, but digital is definitely the way to go. The following link will be very helpful as it list most of the cameras out there with prices. http://reviews.cnet.com/digital-cameras/

What gives a camera its picture quality? The following information should help you know what to look for in a camera.

The short answer is that it is mostly the skill of the photographer that produces high quality pictures. The lens and camera are very important, but the ability to set the scene, adjust the cameras settings, and hold the camera very still or use a tripod with auto or remote shutter actuation when required is what gets the great pictures.

Many of the new cameras come with only an LCD screen. Would suggest that you find one that also has an optical view finder because the LCD screen is almost impossible to see in bright sun.

You may be able to find it on the Internet for a lower price, but be careful of the vendor.

You may be able to view the owners manual at this link, but will need to Login. http://www.retrevo.com/s/digital+camera ...

Check replacement battery prices when buying a new camera. Some proprietary batteries cost almost as much as the camera and may be only good for 200 shots between charges.

Digital Cameras..............?

what kind of digital camera is really good for people like me who are into photography ? and i don't want one that is really expensive..

Answer
In new cameras, look for optical viewfinders (LCD invisible in bright sun) and check battery prices. High mega pixel settings take longer to process and may not be needed unless required for very large pictures or enlarging small parts of big pictures. Maximum print size for a 3 mega pixel setting is 8 x 10 inches. Click links below for more details.

10 megapixel Kodak and Canon digital cameras?

Ariel G

Woudl the additional $200 be worth it for the Canon if the pixels are the same? And what makes Canon so much more expensive and are they really worth the aditional cost?

Answer
Dude, Canon smokes Kodak in this department. Now I am not sure where you are looking for cameras, but you may want to check out this place: www.digitaldealz.net, I saved a buttload of money when I bought my Canon Rebel. Good luck!

Should I buy a Canon 7D?

N

I'm finishing high school soon and want to invest in a good camera. I plan on going to school for a degree in photography, film production, or graphic design. I figure a good camera would be useful for all three. I can spend around $2,500, but under 2k would be great.

I'm pretty fixed on the 7D, but I can't figure a way to get good lenses for both film and photography for less then 1k. Should I go for a cheaper camera and buy good lenses, or vice versa?

I need a pro level camera that can handle both video and photo.

Answer
Buy the 7D now if you can afford it. At the very least get a fast normal lens 35mm f/1.8 or the kit lens that comes with it, the 18-"whatever" mm.

At the most, which will surely go over budget so as a long term plan, get some popular focal length lenses that are also fast. You can't go wrong with 50mm, 85mm and 24mm. If you don't have the 35mm yet, get it too. The more you learn about photography and film making, the more you'll appreciate what those two lenses can do.

Buying Canon 7D, any reviews?

Emma

i own a Nikon D80 and i want the new Canon 7D, i was wondering if it is better than the Nikon D300 or 700, and what are some of the good qualities.

Answer
If you switch to the 7D, those old Nikon lenses you used to use with the D80 will all be useless. The cost isn't just limited to the body itself, but to the lenses you will need to buy to replace the old ones you had before.

As for performance, the D700 is the best out of those 3. For the same price as getting the 7D and replacement lenses, the D700 is the much better camera here.

Ihave a canon sd600 digital camera I get 'LENS ERROR', what's wrong? MK?

karelly e

I went to the beach , the camara was little wet, thememori an the baterri was dry.

Answer
the good news, going to the beach is a fun place to go!, but salt water and sand is the worst Emmy for electronic and mechanical parts! any time you take your camera's to the beach, you have to protect them! get a good camera bag!!! the other problem is if you have any kind of warranty for the camera, I,am sorry to say it's now void! so any repairs that you will now will cost you money! once a tech takes it apart he will see sand and may be water! and at that point, they will put it back together and sed it back to you! they will look at it and tell you that the camera is dead and not worth fixing. sorry to give you the bad news!!

thanks,

Bob

Canon digital camera IX US 950IS displays "lens error".?

Saras

I have a Canon digital camera IS. While cleaning the camera I pressed the on/off button & get a message "lens error , restart camera". The lens doesn't close now. Have I messed up with my camera? Any help?

Answer
Here are some troubleshooting steps that you can try that may (or may not) correct your problem. They only seem to work for less than 40% of the lens errors, but if the camera is out of warranty (or repair cost approaches that of the camera), they're worth that try. Some of the later steps do involve some risk to the camera, so carefully weigh your options before deciding to conduct them:
