I want a new digital camera for christmas. I want it to be compact, pink, and atleast 8MP. I typed in simply "digital camera pink" on amazon.com to see what brands came up, and quite a few did. Can anyone tell me which brand/ model is the best quality or value, which has bugs and which takes the most consistent good photos? All info is appreciated. Thanks!

Answer
Canon PowerShot SD1100IS 8MP Digital Camera with 3x Optical Image Stabilized Zoom (Pink) - see it at:

http://astore.amazon.com/computizoneco-20/detail/B0012Y6958

I was a bit skeptical, but after reading various reviews I decided on the Canon PowerShot SD1100IS.

I am very happy with the power, convenience, and functionality of this camera that takes great photos.

Do magazines prefer digital or film photos?

canon digital camera 350d on Digital Cameras - Canon EOS 350D Digital Rebel Digital Camera Review
canon digital camera 350d image

TrishyC

I am looking to build up a portfolio of images that I can submit to magazines along with a written article. Can someone advise me as to what high end magazines prefer for quality reproduction? I have a Canon 350D digital camera and a Mamiya 645 film camera... which is the better choice so that I am not wasting my time shooting stuff that is unusable? Only those with industry experience need reply please!! Thanks for any help!

Answer
It's been a long while since I submitted film negatives or slides, they would probably accept them, but it's a lot of extra work for them and they much prefer digital files. Your Canon 350D is not really up to the job, most magazines need the images from at least a 10Mp camera it depends on how big the images will be in the article. To give you an idea a double page image needs to be from a 14Mb camera, they don't like 'interpolated' images, images that the data has been expanded to make a larger file.

Don't be surprised if they ask you to organise and pay for the film scanning, their guy that manned their drum scanner has probably retired and nobody there knows how to use it any more, I've come across this once this year!

It does depend on the magazine, Art magazines want only high quality images, some photo magazines will accept less than perfection.

What is the best digital camera for a photography amateur?

Q. I am looking for a digital camera to use as a photography beginner. I'm looking for something just above your regular run-of-the-mill snapshot-type camera, but nothing in the thousands of dollars.

Any advice you can give to this photography newbie is appreciated.

Answer
Well, I'm assuming you would buy a camera under $1000. If so, I would recommend a digital SLR. If you're taking up photography as a serious hobby, you will eventually buy a DSLR later on. The digital point & shoot (P&S) cameras are good for casual photo taking (parties, occasions, etc.) and known for their simplicity and small size. But once you learn more about basic photography and the features on a DSLR, you'll be able to take far better photos that are not obtainable on a P&S camera.

With that said, if you want an affordable DSLR, there's 2 to choose from that I recommend:

Nikon D50 and Canon EOS 350D

The Nikon is more affordable at under $700, and the Canon is under $800. All depending on what you want. Just get the basic lens and a high capacity memory card, I suggest 1GB. You can still take really good pictures even if you're a beginner and don't utilize the camera to it's full capacity, because there are a few auto options. But when you're ready, you'll have the right camera to take awesome photos.

what's the difference between canon ELPH digital cameras and canon A-Series digital cameras?

dancingint

I want to get a canon, but I don't understand the differences between these 2 series of canon cameras.

-- Also another question i have is...
Do the canon digital cameras do a beauty shot (make your face look flawless and pretty) type thing like the samsung cameras do?
help would be really appreciated :) thanks!

Answer
The Canon website supplies a lot of specs and information about their cameras, and even a comparison function. It is best if you go study them on there.

As to the "beauty shot", my advice is the same as for any and all effects done in-camera:

DON'T DO IT !!!

Imagine if you just happen to take the best photo you ever took - surely you would want to have it in all its glory, right?

Always set your camera to biggest size, best quality (and to color).

That way, you start with the best possible photo as your original.

Then you make a copy and edit it to your heart's content.
You have much better control over any editing on your computer, even something as simple as b&w will look MUCH better when it was processed properly instead of in camera.
You can do all sorts of things to it PLUS you get to keep your original.

I have a canon powershot elph 110 HS digital camera. It has a mini-usb connection on the side of it to connect it to the computer. I have connected the USB to the computer but I can't record directly onto my Harddrive. How can I do this? I tried installing the suite DVD that came with the camera but didnt have any luck. Any help would great!

Answer
You don't. Only a select hand full of dslr cameras are capable of "tethering" and generally those don't record video to your hard drive, only still photos.

Which Canon Digital Camera should I get, and which one can use optical zoom while recording videos?

Da Bol Kyr

I'm thinking about purchasing my 2nd digital camera and 1st from Canon.

I have my eyes on 2 cameras, The Canon PowerShot ELPH 300 HS & Canon Powershot SX230 HS. Which one is better and which one allows me to use optical zoom while recording videos/movies?

I'm leaning with the SX230 HS, but I would like your people's opinion and I appreciate and thank you in advance.

Answer
Above answer is questionable..

On-topic: Both cameras will allow you to use the optical zoom during video recording. Personally I would spring for the SX230 because it evidently has a longer optical zoom range and it also has manual exposure controls.

I'm considering to buy one of the models below :

1. Canon Powershot SD4000 IS
2. Canon PowerShot S90
3. Canon PowerShot SX210 IS

or any other digital cameras you would recommend as a second choice? thanks!

Answer
I would get the Canon with longest zoom which appears to be the Canon Powershot SX 210 IS.
The other cameras seem to have only a 3x optical zoom, which I feel is too short a zoom. You buy a camera to take good pictures, which all of these cameras will due. But after a while you are going to want a long lens. The SX 210 IS lens is equal to a 35mm lens of 28mm -to- 392mm. That should cover anything that you are likely to encounter.

Which is a better camera, the nikon d3000 or canon rebel XSI?

I am a beginger and own the canon s90, but I want a more advanced camera. This would be my first D slr camera so I am not really sure what to look for when choosing which one. I have always been a Canon person, although most reviews say that the Nikon is better. help!

Kindly suggest me .

Answer
try to look for Fujifilm F100fd or Fujifilm F200EXR the newer one.
http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/Q408prem...
12mpx, 5x optc zoom, record video w/sound, iso up to 12800

also think of Canon,
do not think of Nikon, it is slow at night shots to focus
do not think of Samsung, it is worst image quality
second only to Casio in baddest quality image.

think of panasonic, but maybe if you think of this, maybe get back to Fujifilm and check why its the best of 2008.

i have Fuji F100fd, my friends like it and two of them bought the same camera too.

I have a Canon XT (8 mp) Rebel digital camera. It has the 18-55 mm lens that came with it. I need to know the equivalent of a 50mm (35mm camera) setting for my lens. I guess what I'm trying to ask is this: I need to use the digital equivalent of the 35mm format 50 mm lens. I know the 50mm setting on the digital is not the same as the 50mm on a 35mm film camera. Any advice?

Answer
Your camera has a 1.6 crop factor sensor. Your lens set to 30mm will give you the equivalent of 48mm on a 35mm format film SLR.

Astrophotography, what telescopes are compatible with Canon Digital Rebel XT?

Aphrodite

I have a Canon Digital Rebel XT and am wanting to start astrophotography.
I am not good with crazy terms, but need to know a good telescope to use.
Anyone know of a few I can check out?

Answer
Well, ..., IT's not just the scope that you should be worried about bur rather the mount. In astrophotography the mount is the most important thing you should consider. Also, you're not going to get an astrophotgraphy "ready" scope for under $1000 USD that's all there is to it. The Orion-EQ computerized goto mount is one of the the cheapest goto mounts that I've seen (http://www.telescope.com/Mounts-Tripods/Equatorial-Mounts-Tripods/Orion-Atlas-EQ-G-Computerized-GoTo-Telescope-Mount/pc/-1/c/2/sc/34/p/24338.uts). That's just the mount and does not include the OTA (Optical Tube Assembly) which could run you another $1000 or so (depending on what you want to do, of course).

If you're looking for an Schimidt-Cassegrain Telescope (SCT), then starting price is $2,599 and that doesn't include the equatorial wedge. So you really need to be thinking as follows:

1) 8" Goto Fork Mounted SCT: 2,599.00: http://www.optcorp.com/product.aspx?pid=1-600-603-979-12961&kw=&st=0
2) Equatorial Wedge: 179.00: http://www.optcorp.com/productList.aspx
3) Deep Sky Imaging Camera with Filter Wheel and autoguider: $1389.85: http://www.telescope.com/control/astrophotography/astrophotography-cameras/orion-starshoot-planetary-imager-and-autoguider. (You already have the cannon rebel XT tis a great astrophotgraphy camera out of the box)
4) 4 Astrophotography filters: 205.95: http://www.telescope.com/control/accessories/telescope-and-eyepiece-filters/1*25-inch-lrgb-astrophotography-telescope-eyepiece-filter-set

So adding it up: 2,599.00 + 179.00 + 1389.85 + 205.95 = $4373.80 * 7.5 tax = ~$4701.84.

So it takes a little dough to get started but it's do able. You might want to consider getting into the visual end of astronomy first and then work your way up to astrophotography. BTW, the prices I've given, though actual, may be less if you already have some of the items so in your case it could be less. Especially since you already own a DLSR, then you don't need to invest in an astronomy camera and will only need an autoguider which on runs about $385 (depending on which one you buy).

You might also want to pick up a copy of one of Robert Reeve's books "Astrophotography for Webcams" or "Astrophotography for DSLR's". His books are full of great tips on how to be successful at astrophotogrpahy.

Watch the following video for specifications on 10" Meade LX200 with an equatorial wedge:

How do I set my camera in Raw?

canon digital camera hack on Canon A420 - smart reviews on cool stuff.
canon digital camera hack image

mikejar199

I have a Canon powershot sx-100IS, It is a digital camera, and dont even know if it has raw, What is raw for? Only digital SLRs have raw?
What improvements does it bring?

Answer
Your camera doesn't have a RAW mode.

Even if you can hack it somehow, there is a possibilty that photo software won't even recognize it as a standard RAW file that matches a particular camera.

The advantages of RAW are huge although it isn't always needed.
That's why some photographers shoot in RAW+jpeg. You can use the good jpegs, and only get into the RAW files when you need to.

RAW files are huge, and they take a long time to open, edit and save compared to jpegs. However, they are the closest thing to the RAW image right off the image sensor as you can get. The dynamic range is greater, gradients are finer, color gamut is wider etc.

You have a lot more leeway with white balance, no compression artifacts like jpegs and so much more. RAW files can save you when shooting tough high dynamic range pics or with white balance problems, things tha can't always be fixed with a jpeg.

All dSLRs can shoot RAW, and some top of the line (expensive) point and shoots support RAW.

Photo Capture software compatible with my camera?

JoshuaJ

I have a Canon PowerShot DS600 digital compact camera and I want to be able to take pictures from it using my computer. As I am interested in using it for Stop Motion. However, I have tried Stop Motion Pro, MonkeyJam and VideoCat, none are picking up my camera. I do not necessarily need a stop motion program. With onionskinning and video compilation and all that stuff if it's not possible. I just need something that can take pictures from my camera without pressing the button on the top.

Answer
have you thought about hacking it with a firmware that supports the intervalometer function from:
http://chdk.wikia.com/

you'll still need to press the button but it will keep taking pics for desired time and interval until the card is full

Answer
There is no one particular place to get great buys, but you may see something below that really helps you find the best buy. Click on the first link in the information below for an example and search for your camera of choice at the upper left.

This may not be an SLR, but Canon seems to make the best cameras for the money. Just saw this camera at Best Buy and think it is a great camera and a best buy. It has an optical viewfinder, image stabilizer, auto focus, and uses NiMH rechargeable batteries. Read as much of the following as you can for other information and help with choosing a camera.
Canon A590IS $149.99 at Best Buy store yesterday.
http://bountii.com/deal-1523871-canon-powershot-8-0-megapixel.html ...

There are so many cameras out there it is difficult to say which is best, but digital is definitely the way to go. The second source link will be very helpful as it list most of the cameras out there with prices.

What gives a camera its picture quality? The following information should help you know what to look for in a camera.

The short answer is that it is mostly the skill of the photographer that produces high quality pictures. The lens and camera are very important, but the ability to set the scene, adjust the cameras settings, and hold the camera very still or use a tripod with auto or remote shutter actuation when required is what gets the great pictures.

Many of the new cameras come with only an LCD screen which is almost impossible to see in bright sun so you should try to find one that also has an optical view finder.

Check replacement battery prices when buying a new camera. Some Lithium batteries cost almost as much as the camera and may be only good for 200 shots between charges.

Higher mega pixels may not really be the best thing to look for. It is more expensive, takes longer to process, and may not be needed unless you are making a really large picture or blowing up a small part of a picture. Maximum print size for a 3 mega pixel setting is 8 x 10 inches.

http://www.digitalcamerareview.com/default.asp?newsID=3462&review=sony+cybershot+w150 ...

The information about my camera is just to show that you don't need the biggest and best. Just know how to use the one you have.
My camera has 5.2 mega pixel, but I use 3 most of the time because it gives great results, is faster, and takes less memory. Also, it only has a 3 x optical zoom and 7x digital zoom. I never use the digital zoom because making pictures larger works better on the computer. This is an old camera, but everyone is impressed with the quality pictures it takes ... like magic.

Check with the Geeks in several stores and compare prices. Ask what cameras they own, but don't believe everything you hear. Once you select a camera read all about it in the owner's manual. Just learned that my camera has red-eye prevention and correction. It also has adaptive lighting. You may be able to view owners manuals at this link, but will need to Login. http://www.retrevo.com/s/digital+camera ...

The source links will show most of the cameras out there with prices and help make your digital cameras work better.

What is the cheapest way to get a digital SLR camera?

Ja

And don't say steal it!
I am a student photographer, and I used a standard canon digital camera, but I wan't something with more optical zoom that can be digital. I already have a canon film slr that my mom used to have, and frankly it is quite old and a hassle to carry around. I decided it might be best if I went ahead and invested in an slr, but i know those are extremely pricey! So, do you know where the best deals are for slr cameras, both on and offline?

Or, if not, do you know what the best slr STYLED digital cameras are that are out there?

Thank you so much!

Answer
Depending on how serious you are into photography and what type of photography you are doing. I would personally recommend a second hand or refurbished digital SLR for starters. I bought mine second hand and paid only 1/4th of the original price.I own Canon EOS 10D,you can see some of my photography on my website.

Then for the lens, the only problem with second hand is to be very very careful. You'll need to check and make sure that the glass has no marks and there is no dust inside, otherwise buy a new lens. Oh as you said you have a canon film slr, if it has autofocus lenses, you can use them with the digital slr so buy a body only and use existing lenses.

Also note that, because the digital slr doesn't have sensor same size as 35mm, so whichever lens you use, you have to multiply it by 1.6 so for example 17mm lens will be converted to approx 27mm on digital slr.

Hope this helps.

P.S. : To start a photography as a student, none of the compact digital or bridge cameras will help, u'll need digital slr (depending on how serious you are as i said). Otherwise yes there are some digital bridge cameras which provides you with almost all features of an SLR but too slow and quality is not same. A canon bridge camera for example is Canon PowerShot G series or Canon PowerShot S2IS.

I am shopping to replace my broken Digital camera. What FEATURES should be my focus?

chasvanblo

The Fuji-Digital camera I bought from a travelling-merchant, years ago has finally given out. - It no longer powers-up. :-( I used it to take a few Final pic's of my nephew's newly-arrived son a few days ago, so I do have some .jpeg's in it that I really want to take out.
I am shopping to replace this digital camera with one with even more and better features - for a reasonable price.
Beginning my browsing at Wally World, I find a few models of cameras to consider.
How VERSATILE is the standard Aim-and-shoot-type of Digital camera vs. the model that comes with interchangeable lenses (like it's earlier version of the 35mm film camera)?

The Models and prices range from a CANON @$79.00
to a FUJIFILM @$119.00
to a SONY @$119.00
to a NIKON@$149.00

I am not a PROFESSIONAL Photographer by any means. - I want an easy-to-operate unit that will allow me to edit my .jpegs on-the-spot, easily upload to my desktop terminal to post to my FB Wall and attach to misc. E-mails and will allow me to take an occasional live video with sound-recording.

What can be my shopping-options?
I live on a VERY-TIGHT BUDGET, so price is very important.
Placing a PRICE-LIMIT on my shopping, I will go as high as $150 for a GOOD QUALITY Digital camera with more features (I hope to be able to Edit my images inside this camera as well as setting the other options %Aperature, F-stop, Automatic-Focus, Repeating shots, etc.)
I am REALLY GOING AFTER THIS NEW CAMERA, planning to buy it soon.

Comparing the TYPES of Digital cameras (Fixed-focus vs. Interchangeable-lenses) which type of digital camera offers a better deal, is more versatile and is more durable (I hope to travel with this camera)?

Answer
The Canon A810 is an easy to use budget compact camera. Works amazing, easy to use. It takes high quality HD videos, focuses well, not painfully slow. If don't expect manual features or anything professional get it

What other digital camera is as good as the Canon Powershot SD750 Silver?

canon digital camera viewfinder on Canon EOS 400D | Digital Camera Review | Control
canon digital camera viewfinder image

flash22

I'm thinking of buying a Canon Powershot SD750 silver for my girlfriend as a surprise. She had told me a few months ago that she wanted one. I could buy it for her , but the price is kind of steep at $299. I was wondering is there another digital camera that is just as good but a little bit less pricey? It could be $225 or less. I know she wants a camera that is slim, and that can fit into a pocket. Also she wants one that has a nice LCD screen to watch the previews, and has different picture modes. Any suggestions would help.

Answer
The Canon Powershot SD750 and SD1000 are almost identical cameras.
The main differences (other than a slightly different body), are...
SD750...3.0" LCD, no viewfinder.
SD1000...2.5" LCD, has a viewfinder.

My pick would be the SD1000, because it has the viewfinder (which is invaluable to have at times). Plus, it's in your price range ($200-250).
Both have the same high res. LCD screen (230,000 pixels).
The SD750's LCD is just slightly larger and that's the only real reason it costs more.

good luck...

Compact digital camera with miniature effect and an optical viewfinder?

Any recommendations for a compact digital camera, that has the fake tilt shift (miniature/ diorama) effect? Also, an optical viewfinder would be a must. I know Canon G12 would fit, but any others out there? I'm interested in Fuji X10, but can't find any info whether it has the miniature feature.

1) ELPH designated cameras are sold in the UK and Europe
2) Each camera company has some unique features. Eventually if they become popular, they show up on other brands. Remember when "smile and face recognition" was only available on Sony products?

I have a kodak digital camera but I was thinking about buying a new one. I need one that is small and thin, not too small or too thin. I also need a big screen. If you have a camera that you recommend works best please tell me. All answers are appreciated.

There is no one particular place to get great buys, but you may see something below that really helps you find the best buy. Click on the first link in the information below for an example.

Canon A590IS $134.99 at Best Buy or $116.30 at Amazon.com

There are so many cameras out there it is difficult to say which is best, but digital is definitely the way to go. The second source link will be very helpful as it list most of the cameras out there with prices.

What gives a camera its picture quality? The following information should help you know what to look for in a camera.

The short answer is that it is mostly the skill of the photographer that produces high quality pictures. The lens and camera are very important, but the ability to set the scene, adjust the cameras settings, and hold the camera very still or use a tripod with auto or remote shutter actuation when required is what gets the great pictures.

Many of the new cameras come with only an LCD screen. Would suggest that you find one that also has an optical view finder because the LCD screen is almost impossible to see in bright sun.

What settings do I set my camera to?
And where would I find the setting?

Note: Mine is a fairly advanced digital camera from Canon.

(Give me the general settings for closeup pictures. What other tips do you have to offer?)

Answer
Most Canon P&S cameras have a "macro" mode that allows the camera to focus on close subjects - Somewhere on your camera should be a button with a little flower - press it and there you go...

Does every mini tripod work for every camera?

canon digital camera 10 megapixel on Canon Digital Rebel XSi 12.2 MP Digital SLR Camera with EF-S 18-55mm ...
canon digital camera 10 megapixel image

n

I am going to buy a Canon - PowerShot 10.0-Megapixel Digital Camera and i'd also like to buy a bipod for those steady shots.

since it is fairly big, I do not know if it will work for every mini tripod. I want a mini one because I don't really need a huge one.

If all most tripods not work with this camera, what mini tripod will?

Sorry if this is a obvious question, I suck at cameras. Heh.

Answer
All tripods have quarter inch screws and all cameras have quarter inch holes in the bottom. (perhaps apart from EXPENSIVE pro equipment)

Be sensible about the tripod dont buy too small a one or it will fall over. I use a good sturdy tripod about £40 and a beanbag (e.g Beanpod) type to carry about with me -it's great for self timer shots and for steadying the camera for low light or time exposures

How do I choose the camera I want? What traits should I pay attention to? Details please...?

Kary

I thought that the higher are megapixels, the higher is the quality of a picture. Wrong. I tried a 10 megapixel camera from Canon (digital elph) and the pics come out really grainy. Not that the camera is bad, but it's not what I am looking for. What I would like to know is what sort of camera I should look for if I'm looking for a good quality in nature pics, mountains, forests, ocean, etc. Nature in one word. And also how can I make sure that zoomed in images will look good, clear (not obscure), as if it's not taken from too far away.
Now, I know very little about cameras. I would really appreciate if you give me the exact parameters I need to look for, from what range to what range, what sort of lens, what brand, how many megapixels... Details please. And if you know the price ranges, it would also help a lot.
Also, what should I look for the images taken at dusk and dawn, w/t a lot of light.
I appreciate whatever info I can get.
Thank you all for the good info, especially a user by name 'R M' . (and btw I never mentioned that the pics print grainy; overall images appear grainy on the screen, no matter what mode I use)
I started looking for the camera according to things listed by 'R M', and I think my head is about to explode. The more you learn, the more questions come out on the way.
So, is '18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G ED AF-S DX Lens' considered a good lens? and overall is 'Nikon D80 Kit W / AF-S DX Zoom Nikkor' considered a good camera? I found one for $ 979.
Thanks again

Answer
There are three key things you should look for:

1) Speed. The faster the response when you press the shutter button, the better you'll be able to capture those special moments. This is known as shutter lag. You want a very small shutter lag. The best is around 0.1 second. The worst is around 2 seconds.

2) Noise. In low light conditions, a camera with "noisy" electronics will produce images with lots of speckles. This is similar to "graininess" found on film cameras. You want a camera with very low noise, especially at ISO settings of 400 or more. This will result in nice clean shots in low light conditions.

3) Image sharpness. A crisp image will be the combination of a good lens and image sensor.

The only way to get the best of all three features is to go with a DSLR style camera, such as the Nikon D40. The downside to DSLR cameras is that they are large and heavier that something like a pocket side digital elph.
