What is the best compact digital camera?

canon digital cameras compact on canon-digital-slr-cameras
canon digital cameras compact image

Chlo

My dad mentioned to me that i should get a G12, but as i'm 16 i'd like the camera to be pocket size, so i was thinking of getting a canon s95.

But what is the best compact digital compact camera out? (no maximum price suggested)

thanks

Answer
I would consider Canon PowerShot S95 10 MP Digital Camera

10.0-megapixel sensor combined with the DIGIC 4 Image Processor creates Canon's HS System
Capture 720p HD video in stereo sound; play back on an HDTV via the HDMI output
f/2.0 lens for low light conditions or shallow depth-of-field; control ring for intuitive manual control
3.8x optical zoom; 28mm wide-angle lens; Canon's Hybrid IS to compensate for angular and shift camera shake
Capture images to SD/SDHC/SDXC memory cards (not included)

which digital camera is the best for downloading photos in PC?

SPIRITUAL

I have a Sony which is good in lenses but when trying to downloading software from Sony is a nightm are!
Which compact digital camera is jut "plug and go" in relation to computer? I mean which digital brand is the more easy to deal, in relation to any computer operation system?
I didn't have any problem with my Canon, but I am having lots of problems with Sony digital cameras and camcorders (Sony'camcorder software even block my PC cd room when updating)

Answer
You can take off the memory card of ANY digital camera, plug it in a compatible USB card reader, connect the card reader to an open USB slot in the computer, and use My Computer (Windows) or Finder (Mac) to COPY, DELETE, and MOVE files from the memory card to the computer and vice versa and even format the memory card (as FAT32) to empty it and give you more space for new pictures. If there is a problem encountered using this method, it is usually the memory card itself at fault and the only solution is to replace it. You DO NOT need to the software that came with the camera at all. Just keep the CD in a safe place for future reference.

How do you know which lenses fit your camera?

I have a sony a55 and I've been looking on amazon trying to get a 75-300 or something-300mm lens for my camera and a lot of them say for sony, nikon or canon digital camera or something like that. I want to be sure it works on mine though so how can I be 100% sure that they will fit mine?

Answer
Check that it supports the Sony A mount. It tends to say something like "Tamron 70-300mm for Sony"

The Tammy 70-300mm is by the way a decent lens for a low low price.

Your A55 has the a mount, aka the modern old minolta mount and will accept old minolta glass auto focus glass and Sony lenses. But also Sigma, Tamron and other brands lenses as long as they are...you guessed it A-mount. Made for use on the Sony!

Make sure you buy a lens with the right mount and it should work just fine. Now there is on caveat, there are allot of older manual focus lenses out of the film age. And there are adapters you can screw on them to allow you to use these older lenses with modern cameras.

Sometimes you find one of these oldies sold like a "panagor 135mm F2,8 for Sony" means that its a M42 or another mount lens with an adapter on it for Sony.

Now using old glass is fun but without AF so it is something you have to decide if you like it.

I want to buy a inexpensive digital camera?

I'm deciding between buying a 5mp or a 7mp, I am very concerned on price, would prefer to spend $100, but willing to spend more if there is a big difference in quality. I hear canon makes good digital cameras, any other suggestions. My friend had a sony and it was crappy, so I don't wanna get one of those.

What equipments (tools) do i need to start a digital photography studio?

venus_inbl

Hi everybody, I really need help. Does anyone know what are the minimum equipments needed to start a small digital photography studio? What I have in mind is to print my photos and sell them. Also, photoshooting people in my studio and developing them. What kind of printers, inks, and papers do I need? All of these are in my mind. Plz if someone has experience, feel free to answer me here or send me an e mail at: venus_inblack@yahoo.com
I'm a freelance photograher for nearly 5 years. What I know is just photoshooting. I have no idea about how to make my own business. Thanx a lot :) Bye

Answer
What Nihilistic said but I'll go into a bit more detail. For the studio, you need a range of backdrops ranging from black to white and in between. The backdrops should not only touch the ground be have a good meter or two laid out on the ground for a seemless transition from the ground to the background.

The basic lighting kit (and this IS only basic) would consist of two strobes, two reflective umbrellas, one or two softboxes, a snoot (the fitting that turns the stobe into a spotlight, two strobe stands (obviously) and some reflectors.

Now - if you are setting up a studio, I suggest you purchase a very good camera, not just a "this will be ok for the job" camera. You don't need to go terribly expensive but still prepare to spend some money. The Nikon D200 is excellent yet isnt the most expensive camera around. If you can't afford that camera, then the D80 is a little cheaper. If you want to go Canon (lenses cost more) then try the Canon 400D unless price isnt an issue, then go with the 30D. The two top cameras would be the Nikon D2X and the Canon EOS 1Ds mark II. I prefer Nikon personally.

For lenses, I suggest spending some money on this area. You dont need to get Nikon or Canon specifically. Tamron has proven to be a very good lens. If you are doing studio portraits, be sure to have about 30ft of space to work with in your studio. And for the perfect portrait lens, you would be looking at the Tamron 90mm macro. That has got to be my favourite lens. It is very very sharp because it is a prime lens (fixed at 90mm focal length).

Get a decent computer with at least 1GB ram and if you go for a laptop, get an lcd monitor to go with it because laptops dont have adjustable screens built in. The reason for an external monitor is to adjust the colour to make it as accurate to the final print as possible. Adobe Photoshop CS2 is the software to be using. And while we are on computers, shoot everything in RAW (NEF for Nikons) format. That will give you the greatest control over your final results. A Nikon D200 for example, will produce NEFs with 14 stops of dynamic range which is huge. JPGs only give about 8 - 10 stops.

For printing, dont print your own. Have a professional photolab print your photos. There is no printer on the consumer market that can print a real photograph. And those thermal dye sublime whatever they're called printers, they aren't real photos.

Well I hope this helps. Visit my website and feel free to drop me an email if you would like more information.

What are the biggest difference between Canon 60D vs 7D vs 5D?

Answer
Ignore the DXO sensor tests, they are made using unprocessed RAWs.
They are not real world images.
Reviewing unprocessed RAWs is like reviewing a car without a gearbox.

5D is full frame. Great for portraits, lanscape. Very low light performance is good at extreme ISOs.

7D is APS-C, low light performance excellent up to ISO 1600, good at 3200, poor above that, for high ISOs you should shoot RAW and tweak the noise reduction, particularly chroma noise reduction in Adobe Camera RAW or Canons DPP.

The 7D is really a stand out camera for sports and nature. Very sophisticated AF system, with loads of points, all cross type points and double cross type sensor at centre with f2.8 or faster lenses.
If you need AF speed and accuracy for your stills the 7D is the best thing you can buy this side of a 1D series. It has a dedicated AF processer (only the 1D / 1Ds series cameras also have this) and it has Ai Servo mode adjustments, which make a huge difference to AF predicatability. Again, not seen on the 60D or 5D2.

The 60D has same sensor and processor as the 7D pretty much and so image quality is comparable.
If you aren't exceptionally demanding of your AF then it'll do very good job for you.

The 5D2 and the 7D are designed for very different users, it's not a case of one is better than the other.

The 60D is a great camera, but keep an eye on the 600D / T3i, a bit more compact, same flip out screen, a subtle step down in AF performance, but again, same sensor, same processor.

What kind of canon dslr should I get?

I have been borrowing one of my relatives canon rebel t2i for about 4 months and I really like it and am planning to buy my own canon camera. I don't know which one to get and I don't have much knowledge about camera. I want to get something better than the t2i.

Answer
I think you should consider Canon EOS Rebel T3i, it's a best dslr camera that has 18 MP, a vari-angle 3.0-inch LCD monitor, Full HD Movie mode.

If you want a vari-angle 3.0-inch LCD monitor and wireless flash photography get a Canon EOS Rebel T3i. if no want that features get a Canon EOS Rebel T2i.

hi um i want to make youtube videos with a digital camera. whats the best kind that comes with a USB, a memory card, and can make videos. whats the cheapest kind?

Answer
These are the best consumer rated cameras that fit your needs:

Panasonic Lumix DMC-ZS3 Digital Camera--$366.00

The Panasonic DMC-ZS3 has a very good HD movie mode (1280 x 720) and allows you to use the optical zoom and optical image stabilization while recording. It also records in stereo sound and includes an HDMI output for viewing recordings on an HDTV. Aside from its excellent movie recording capabilities, this is a terrific all-around camera that does nearly everything well. Itâs extremely versatile because of its 12x optical zoom lens, which offers a range of 25-300mm, yet is small enough to fit into a pocket.
The DMC-ZS3 offers excellent image quality, fast performance, and a very impressive high-resolution 3.0â LCD display. It also features optical image stabilization, which is very effective for reducing blur and improving low-light shots. This camera is remarkably easy to use and produces great results when set to Intelligent Auto mode; the Face Detection technology also works very well. More experienced users will be frustrated by the lack of manual controls, but the DMC-ZS3 is still a camera that photo enthusiasts will love to use when they donât want to carry an SLR. If youâre seeking a compact ultra-zoom camera with an excellent movie mode, this one should be at the top of the list. You can find this cameras at Amazon here http://www.amazon.com/Panasonic-DMC-ZS3-Digital-Stabilized-Black/dp/B001QFZMCO/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=photo&qid=1249692371&sr=1-1

Canon PowerShot SD960--$260.00

This ultra-compact digital cameras lets you record high definition 720p (1280 x 720) video at 30 frames per second (fps) in the MOV (H.264) file format. HD video quality is very good, especially in good light. The SD960 IS includes a mini-HDMI connector so you can send the audio and video directly to your HDTV with a single cable. But if you want to play movies back directly on the camera, youâll appreciate the widescreen 2.8â LCD. Pair it with an 8GB or 16GB SDHC card to allow plenty of storage for recordings. The Canon 960 IS also performs well for still images. It features a 4x optical zoom lens with image stabilization and delivers good overall image quality for a pocket camera. If youâre looking for something a little cheaper, the Canon 780 IS also offers an impressive HD shooting movie mode and HDMI output. You can find this camera at Amazon here http://www.amazon.com/Canon-PowerShot-SD960IS-Stabilized-Silver/dp/B001SER46K/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=photo&qid=1249692459&sr=1-1

Canon PowerShot SD780 IS--$227.00

This camera is less expensive than the SD 960 IS but still features the same HD movie mode for recording HD 720p video at 30 fps. Itâs also equipped with a mini-HDMI connector for watching movies on an HDTV. Compared to the 960 IS, the 780 IS has a 3x optical zoom lens vs. 4x, 2.5â LCD vs. 2.8â widescreen LCD, and 3.2 maximum aperture vs. 2.8. The key advantages of the 960 IS compared to the 780 IS are 4x vs. 3x optical zoom lens. Image quality is not spectacular, but thatâs to be expected from a camera this small. You can find this camera at Amazon here http://www.amazon.com/Canon-PowerShot-SD780IS12-1-Stabilized-Black/dp/B001SER47Y/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=photo&qid=1249692517&sr=1-1

Canon PowerShot SX200 IS--$322.00

The Powershot SX200 IS is an excellent ultrazoom camera that can record high quality HD 1280 x 720 (720p) video at 30 frames per second (fps) using the H.264 codec. It is compact for an ultrazoom camera and delivers very good image quality. It also supports HDMI output so you can connect it to an HDTV via a single cable and playback recorded HD video. This camera is also equipped with an impressive 12x optical zoom lens with optical image stabilization. However, while the optical image stabilization works during the movie mode to effectively reduce âshakeâ, optical zoom cannot be used while recording. Additionally, this camera is very easy to use in automatic mode, but also offers full manual controls for advanced photographers. You can find this camera at Amazon here http://www.amazon.com/Canon-PowerShot-SX200IS-Stabilized-Black/dp/B001SER45Q/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=photo&qid=1249692578&sr=1-

What is a quality camera to buy?

Christmas

I want to be able to record for short films, such as videos for YouTube, and be able to take clear photos. I was considering the Canon EOS Rebel T3 Digital camera. It has to be able to withstand a little wear and tear or such. Any recommendations and why?

Answer
Digital Cameras are the ideal way to take advantage of all the features of digital photography, but you can also use a conventional film camera and convert your negatives to the digital domain. For instance, many photo processing outlet's offer the facility of transferring film negatives to CD. If you are not sure about taking the plunge into digital photography, converting film negatives is one way to discover the wonders of digital photography without having to invest in a new digital camera.

Digital photography is becoming more affordable all of the time, and the technology to make fabulous photos is well within the budget of most consumers. Add to this the money that you can save in development costs, you have an inexpensive practical solution to all of your photography requirements.
Sony Cyber Shot, Fuji Film Fine pix, Panasonic Lumix, Olympus & Samsung digital cameras is the best for in cheap rate you can visist http://goo.gl/SVpDl for best cameras, However, Digital Cameras offer so much more than conventional film cameras. Most models have a viewing screen which functions as a view finder as well as a picture viewer. This gives you the ability to view pictures that you have taken just moments before. If you then find that the picture is not to your liking you can just delete it and take another. If part of the photograph is good, crop it and save it back to the camera memory. Many Digital Cameras also have a facility whereby you can capture short bursts of video complete with audio soundtrack
When ever you purchase please check all this point like
Digital camera resolution
Optical zoom on digital cameras
Digital camera shutter delay
Batteries for your digital camera
Digital camera viewfinder
Digital camera size and weight
Manual focusing on digital cameras
Digital cameras with face detection
Digital camera ISO
Video and sound recording on digital cameras
Image stabilization (OIS)
Image quality on digital cameras
If you satisfy then only purchase
I hope my answer will solve your purpose.

What type of camera would you suggest for me?

canon digital camera gallery image

x_moopy_x

Right now, I'm looking at Nikon and Canon SLR Digital camera's [like the Canon Rebel xti, for example]. I just want some outside opinions on the type of camera I should purchase.
I previously had a Minolta Maxxum5, but I want to "upgrade" to a digital.
I love to take photographs of landscape and scenery [my family travels to the Smokey Mountains in Tennessee very often], including old farm buildings, mountains, waterfalls, etc. I also take many pictures at live music shows, where the lighting can be very poor and there's a lot of action. Basically, i'm looking for an all around great camera.
Now, I'm not the richest person in the world either. I'm looking for a camera [body only] costing $600 or less.

If you could also guide me in the right direction as far as camera lenses, that would be great.

thanks a bunch.

Answer
If you have a couple of Minolta A-type mount lenses, you should look at the Sony Alpha-100 (A100) digital SLR, as this is the type of lens that the camera takes. The body alone is available at B&H Photo for $599. I'm not a HUGE fan of this camera, but it is one of the top 10 digital SLR's in the consumer market right now.

If you want to get away from your Minolta lenses or want to avoid Sony in the first place, the Nikon D40 and Canon Rebel XT are in your price range. They are the number 2 and 3 selling consumer SLR's right now. http://www.popphoto.com/cameras/4341/top-selling-digital-slrs-for-may.html I have abias towards the Nikon way of doing things and I usualyl recommend the D40, but you mentioned the Rebel XTi, so I will mention the XT as it is in your price range.

Since you have some experience, you ought to go to a camera shop and play with both the D40 and the XT and see what you think. The way they feel in your hands will be the deciding factor. I have a stock comparison that I will include here, though.......

~~~~~~~~~~
Nikon D40 vs. Canon EOS 350D (Rebel XT)
This isn't exactly what you asked for, but perhaps you will find it helpful in making your decision. I have never used a Canon EOS 350D, so I can't actually compare the cameras, but I favor the D40 because it has a spotmeter and the 350D doesn't. Although the D40 seems small, it is practically the exact same size as the 350D.
http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/compare_post.asp?method=sidebyside&cameras=canon_eos350d%2Cnikon_d40&show=all
http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/nikond40/page17.asp
tells us that the Canon 350D meter calibration is off by about 1/3 of a stop. This would not really present any problems, except that it suggests "something" to me about the quality, since the Nikon and Pentax are dead on.
Scroll on down the page for image comparisons. The D40 is clearly sharper and shows less noise at all ISO settings.
http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/nikond40/page18.asp shows us that both handle shadows equally, but the D40 clips the highlights by about 1/3 of a stop.
http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/nikond40/page21.asp shows a side-by-side of studio images. The 8 MP of the Canon 350D at least put the camera on equal footing with the Nikon D40 for image quality, but you have to take note that the Rebel XT is shot at ISO 100 and the Nikon is shot at it lowest setting of ISO 200. I think the Canon images may look a little better, but we know from the prior page that under equal lighting levels, the Canon will start to break up before the Nikon.
The reviewer says, "While it is possible to pick areas of the image which lend some credence to the EOS 350D's 34% pixel count advantage it's clear that the average observer would not notice these differences and that you would need a very large output size for any of them to become visible."
Check this out...
http://dpreview-img.fotki.com/gallery/canoneos350d_samples1/originals/img_4068-raw-dpp.jpg is taken by the Canon 350D with a 17 mm focal length at f/6.3, 1/80th of a second, ISO 400 using RAW.
http://dpreview-img.fotki.com/gallery/nikond40_samples/originals/dsc_1206.jpg is taken with the Nikon D40 with an 18 mm focal length at f/4.5, 1/80th of a second, ISO 400 using jpeg.
The point of focus for the Canon photo is a bit deeper than it is for the Nikon, but even having 8MP and using RAW and a smaller aperture, I think the Canon image breaks up a lot more than the Nikon. You can barely make out the features on the face of the gentleman in the background. Is this the camera or the superiority of the Nikon 17-55 lens, which so many of us here praise???
Okay, I've made my stance clear. I like the Nikon D40 better than the Canon EOS 350D, so here's my general review of the D40.
The Nikon D40 is a great little camera, very easy to use and quite reasonably priced. It has a few "consumer friendly" totally automatic modes that make it very easy to use, but still offers total photographic control when you are ready to take charge. It will get you in the Nikon family which is a great place to be. If you buy accessories and lenses, you will be able to use everything on any Nikon that you might upgrade to later on.
Check out Nikon's "Picturetown" promotion, where they handed out 200 D40's in Georgetown, SC. http://www.stunningnikon.com/picturetown/
Here are a few reviews, in case you have not read them yet. Be sure to note that they are several pages long and some of the reviews also have some sample images that you can look at.
http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/nikond40/
http://www.steves-digicams.com/2007_reviews/nikon_d40.html
http://www.popphoto.com/cameras/3756/camera-test-nikon-d40.html
http://www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/d40/d40-recommendations.htm
I hate to see people slam the camera because it can't autofocus with older Nikon lenses. It is true that there is a "slight problem" with older Nikon lenses not autofocusing on the D40, but if you do not own a bag full of older lenses, it is not going to be a problem. It is barely a problem anyhow. If you check www.nikonusa.com for "AF-S" lenses, which are ALL 100% compatible with the D40, you will find 23 lenses, including 7 "VR" (vibration Reduction) lenses and one true macro lens with "VR". There are another 25-plus lenses in the current catalog that provide all functions except autofocus as well as many (possibly dozens) "out of print" lenses that will work just as well. In addition, although these lens will not autofocus, most of them will still give focus confirmation. From the D40 manual: "If the lens has a maximum aperture of f/5.6 of faster, the viewfinder focus indicator can be used to confirm whether the portion of the subject in the selected focus area is in focus. After positioning the subject in the active focus area, press the shutter release button halfway and rotate the lens focusing ring until the in-focus indicator is displayed." (See http://www.members.aol.com/swf08302/nikonafs.txt for a list of AF-S lenses.)
The D40 only has 3 autofocus zones arranged horizontally at the center, 9 o'clock and 3 o'clock positions. This might be considered a limitation, but realistically, most people will find this perfectly adequate, especially if you are moving up from a point and shoot with only a center zone.
You can get the D40 with the 18-55 kit lens at B&H Photo available through Yahoo! Shopping or at 1-800-622-4987) for $525 (June 2007). Add a Lexar Platinum (60X speed) card for $25 or 2 GB for $35. Or - get the D40 with 18-135 lens and 1 GB Lexar card for $750. They also have used D40's from $475.
And yet... clearly these are both very good cameras. What it all comes down to is which one YOU feel better about. Go to a camera shop and pick them up and see.
I am a very good photographer and was just wondering how much a professional photographer earns?
David
Is a career worth considering; eg doing weddings, corporate or newspaper/magazine shoots?
I have a Canon EOS digital camera with suitable knowledge.
Answer
Wow... no offense but the guy saying you should not toot your own horn seems to be doing a bit of tooting himself.
"Have you ever worked professionally? If not you don't have any knowledge at all." This statement is incorrect in so many ways... and I'm guessing once the author cools off he'll realize it.
I've been an armature photographer for over 20 years, shot several events including weddings, concerts etc. and never accepted a dime... so I am in no way a professional. It's a hobby but in that 20+ years I have, believe it or not, been able to gather a considerable amount of skill and yes knowledge. I have been offerd payment more times than I can remember but it's just fun for me so I have refused. Sooo....
Basically it's like most jobs. It takes time, hard work, talent and a lot of luck. There are thousands of very skill and talented photographers who fall flat on their face and quite frankly there are hacks who often stumble into a very lucrative career.
It really all depends on you. If you have any galleries up I would be happy to give my humble opinion of your skill or lack there off... I wont needlessly tare you down or build you up... but that being said my opinion will only be one of many you should get before you commit to a career.
If you really want to make "good" money in photography you really need to find a niche (something I've never been able to do), or you need to find something that you excel at... or again... you need to be really lucky.
It's sort of like someone with a guitar asking if he or she should consider a career in music. So many levels of achievement from music teacher to rock star... and so many talented people that never make it and so many totally devoid of talent that do.
Did I help or make it worse? hahah
One final note... no matter how you look at it... to be a professional photographer takes a lot of start up money. Even if your one dimensional you will be looking at a few thousand to start.
I have a digital canon camera rebel XTi and i know that is not fast enough for sports event, but at the same time i would like to take pictures of landscape. So any suggestions of what kind to buy and what model. Thanks!
Answer
The Canon 7D is capable of up to 8fps (frames per second) so that should suffice for your sports photography. Since its a "cropped sensor" camera any EF-S lenses you have can be used with it.
Read a review of the 7D here: http://www.shutterbug.net/equipmentreviews/proquality_digital_slrs/0310canon7D/index.html
For landscape photography the lens is more important. The Canon EF-S 10-22mm f3.5-4.5 USM will give you wide, sweeping landscapes. Just be sure to use a tripod for your landscape photography and understand how to achieve the maximum depth of field. How do I choose a good Digital SLR camera for sports photography?
C.Run
My main area of intrest is taking action shots and sports photos. Can anyone help or give me some suggestions to what I should be looking at? I'm planning to buy, but I don't have an unlimited amount of funds, if you know what I mean. As a matter of fact, I'm kind of strapped. Any suggestions on the best deal with greatest performance?
Answer
The main things you want to look for in cameras for sports photography are;
Frames per second - lower end Nikons and Canons have around 2-5 FPS. It all depends on what you need for the speed.
Lens selection - You may be strapped for cash now, but what about a year from now? You want to get a camera that has a huge selection of compatible lenses so next year you can get that 600mm lens if you want.
Zoom or telephoto lens - These are nessecary in sports photography! Personally, I'd go for the zoom as it's more versital.
A steady tripod - stay away from those aluminum pieces of junk. You will need something that isn't going to break anytime soon. The more you zoom with a camera, the more chance for camera shake. I got a great carbon fiber one from amvona on ebay $40. (don't buy direct from their website.)
I don't know what your actual cash situation is but if I needed to stay on a tight budget, I would go for this setup:
Nikon D40 - $533.28 from Amazon
Nikon 70-300mm zoom lens - $483.54 Amazon
Amvona carbon fiber tripod - Around $40 from ebay.
SanDisk 2 GB, Extreme III SD card - $34.99 on sale at Adorama
If you have a little more in your budget, I would upgrade the camera body to a D80 or D200. The D300 was just announced so the D200 price should drop quite a bit (most likely in October or November)
If you're more of a Canon type, you can find similar setups in the same price range from them as well.
Good Luck!
I have a kodak digital camera but I was thinking about buying a new one. I need one that is small and thin, not too small or too thin. I also need a big screen. If you have a camera that you recommend works best please tell me. All answers are appreciated.
There is no one particular place to get great buys, but you may see something below that really helps you find the best buy. Click on the first link in the information below for an example.
This may not be an SLR, but Canon seems to make the best cameras for the money. Just saw this camera at Best Buy and think it is a great camera and a best buy. It has an optical viewfinder, image stabilizer, auto focus, and uses NiMH rechargeable batteries. Read as much of the following as you can for other information and help with choosing a camera.
Canon A590IS $134.99 at Best Buy or $116.30 at Amazon.com
There are so many cameras out there it is difficult to say which is best, but digital is definitely the way to go. The second source link will be very helpful as it list most of the cameras out there with prices.
What gives a camera its picture quality? The following information should help you know what to look for in a camera.
The short answer is that it is mostly the skill of the photographer that produces high quality pictures. The lens and camera are very important, but the ability to set the scene, adjust the cameras settings, and hold the camera very still or use a tripod with auto or remote shutter actuation when required is what gets the great pictures.
Many of the new cameras come with only an LCD screen. Would suggest that you find one that also has an optical view finder because the LCD screen is almost impossible to see in bright sun.
Check replacement battery prices when buying a new camera. Some Lithium batteries cost almost as much as the camera and may be only good for 200 shots between charges.
Higher mega pixels may not really be the best thing to look for. It is more expensive, takes longer to process, and may not be needed unless you are making a really large picture or blowing up a small part of a picture. Maximum print size for a 3 mega pixel setting is 8 x 10 inches.
The information about my camera is just to show that you don't need the biggest and best. Just know how to use the one you have.
My camera has 5.2 mega pixel, but I use 3 most of the time because it gives great results, is faster, and takes less memory. Also, it only has a 3 x optical zoom and 7x digital zoom. I never use the digital zoom because making pictures larger works better on the computer. This is an old camera, but everyone is impressed with the quality pictures it takes ... like magic.
i want answers frm amateur n professional photographers frm india preferably.if there s a better company please tell me. i'm more interested in the quality of pics and durability rather than a stylish digicam.
Answer
Since you are looking for quality of pictures, I will point you towards the SLR's. They are head and shoulders above the point and shoot cameras for quality of pictures. In the pronsumer-level market, I favor the Nikon D80.
The February 2007 issue of Popular Photography has an article where they compared the top 10 MP DSLR's. I took the scores and ranked the cameras similar to the way Formula 1 gives championship points. I just gave 5 for 1st place down to 1 for last place, splitting the difference when cameras tied in their catagories.
They evaluated Image Quality (giving this twice as much weight as anything else), Ease of Use, Control, and System Flexibility.
The final order and my scores are:
Nikon D80 - 17.5 points
- BEST in Image Quality, Control and System Flexibility
Canon Rebel XTi (400D) - 13.5 points
- Tied for best in System Flexibility
Pentax K10D - 11 points
- Tied for best in Ease of Use
Samsung GX10 - 11 points
- Tied for best in Ease of Use
Sony Alpha 100 - 7 points
- LAST in Image Quality, Ease of Use and System Flexibility."
Then again, this is the same magazine that put the Sony Alpha 100 dead last in this comparison named it the camera of the year in the previous issue! (In a follow-up to this seeming error, Pop Photo published the explanation that only the D80 and the Sony had been tested by the end-of-year deadline for choosing the Camera of the Year. Sony won on the strength of low price and built-in image stabilization. The other 3 that beat Sony in shoot-out were not tested until after the Camera of the Year was selected, because they were not yet available.)
Go to the original question and read the responses for more opinions.
If you want to get the "best" for the real world, consider the Nikon D200 or Canon 30D if you can afford it. For about $300-500 less, look at the results of the recent PopPhoto test and choose from that list according to your taste.
Personally, I use a Nikon D200 and would recommend it without hesitation to someone who has some knowledge of photography. For someone who wants the "best," but is starting with somewhat of an "entry level" knowledge base, I'd suggest the Nikon D80.
There are people out there who will state their preference for the Canon cameras and I will not argue with them. The Canon 30D and 400D are excellent cameras as well.
You would have to visit a camera store or camera department and pick them up and see what you think.
This review is now available online at:
http://www.popphoto.com/cameras/3569/10mp-dslr-shootout.html
Here's another reference from outside the photographic press. Consumer reports compared the Nikon D80, Canon Rebel XTi and Sony Alpha. Personally, I'd say that the Nikon came out on top here, also. It beats the Sony in "noise-free ISO" with an acceptable rating at ISO 1600 (kind of optimistic, I think...) compared to the Sony's ISO 400. It beats the Canon (in my opinion) by having a spot meter that the Canon does not offer.
http://www.consumerreports.org/cro/electronics-computers/news-electronics-computers/november-2006/shootout-10-megapixel-digital-slr-cameras-11-06/overview/0611_digital-slr-shoot-out.htm
Here's another comparison of interest:
http://www.digitalcamerainfo.com/content/Canon-Rebel-XTi-vs-Nikon-D80-vs-Sony-Alpha-A100-Head-to-Head-to-Head-Digital-Camera-Review-.htm
[Note the navigation menu near the top of the review]
The next thing to consider is what lens to start with and where you go from there. If you are new to this, I'd say to just get the "kit" lens, which seems to be the 18-135 lens for the D80, and get started. Once you know where you really want to go with your photography, Nikon has an almost unlimited family of lenses to choose from.
I have a canon digital camera with a 4x optical zoom. what kind of lens do i look for to upgrade to higher zoom? I am pretty camera dumb but am getting into pics so want a camera that wont get blurry upon getting far a way pics.
I found telephoto lenses that are 3x does that mean that my new zoom would be 7x since I already have a 4x or does it replace what the camera already has? This is where I am getting confused.
Answer
Most cheaper non-DSLR cameras will not allow you to upgrade: the most you could hope to do is get an adapter piece and a telephoto mount for it.
This only works if you actually spent good money on that camera, though since most don't afford it. Plus, telephotos are not worth the money if the zoom is that low, so you should just get a new camera in my opinion.
Edit: A telephoto will compound with your camera's optical zoom, so 4x3 = 12x zoom.
I should warn that most telephotos tend to make it more difficult to hold your camera in a balanced way and usually require their own stands if you want a clean shot.
How do I unlock my memory card on my Canon digital camera?
canon digital camera memory card locked on Canon Powershot SD900 Review
canon digital camera memory card locked image
Megan W
I have a Canon Power Shot SD1000 Digital Elph. I have a memory card that I took pictures on, and somehow the memory card is locked. I let someone hold my camera, so I don't know how it got locked in the first place.
It won't let me access my photos, and I know it's the memory card not the camera because the other memory card works.
What do I do?!?!?!
Answer
If you look at the memory card it self there should be a small switch on it. Slide it back and your ready to go!
what does it mean when your camera says memory card error?
Lamb:)
i put my memory card in a card reader like i had did before and my computer said it had a error. i placed it back into my camera and it said there was a memory card error and that the memory card was locked. i unlocked it but now it still says memory card error. its a canon digital camera. does anyone know how to fix it?
Answer
Cards do pick up errors, that's why all the manuals try to persuade you not to store your images on it but transfer them to your computer asap.
It needs formatting.
Do you have the images backed up? The formatting process wipes the card.
Answer
What gives a camera its picture quality?
It is mostly the skill of the photographer that produces high quality pictures. The lens and camera are very important, but the ability to set the scene, adjust the cameras settings, and hold the camera very still or use a tripod with auto or remote shutter actuation when required is what gets the great pictures. Mega pixel resolution is about potential photo size, not picture quality.
In new cameras, look for a viewfinder (LCD invisible in bright sun), optical image stabilizer, and check battery prices. High mega pixel settings take longer to process and may not be needed unless required for very large pictures. Maximum print size for a 3 mega pixel setting is 8 x 10 inches. For expanded wide angle or telephoto capabilities, the A590 IS is compatible with Canon's accessory lens adapters: A small button next to the lens bezel is actually a latch; press it and you can remove the bezel ring, exposing a bayonet mount for accessory lenses. Canon offers the WC-DC52 0.7x wide-angle lens, the TC-DC52A telephoto lens, the 250D 52mm closeup lens separately, along with the LA-DC52G adapter to mount them on the camera. (Note that the wide, tele, and macro lenses all need the LA-DC52G adapter to mount them to the camera. The lenses won't work by themselves.)
There are so many cameras out there it is difficult to say which is best. The second source link will be very helpful as it list most of the cameras out there with prices. The following information should help you know what to look for in a camera.
CAUTION Do not overcharge! Batteries can be damaged. Use an automatic two or more hour Energizer Compact smart charger with temperature monitor, trickle charge technology, and safety timer ($9.76) at Walmart. Use pre-charged 2000mAh Duracell ($12.97) or RayOVac ($5.97) batteries (hold charge one year) and a full cycle charge. To preserve battery charge, use the viewfinder.
CAUTION To prevent memory card corruption, keep batteries charged and don't delete. Wait for lights to stop flashing then turn camera off before removing memory. For card readers, double click Safely Remove Hardware. Select, then click Stop and OK.
The source links show most of the cameras out there with prices and make digital cameras work better with help on cleaning camera and battery electrical contacts.
What digital camera would you recommend?
canon digital camera 4000 on Canon PowerShot A4000 Is Silver 16MP Digital Camera | eBay
I'm looking for a decent digital camera to use primarily for shooting flower arrangements against white backgrounds. Quality and focus are the major concerns here as most of the work will be closeup/macro. A good zoom lens and SLR are a plus for general purpose shooting. What camera(s) would you recommend in the under $600 price range?
Answer
I recommend to anyone seriously contemplating the purchase of a new digital SLR camera to consider these two primary questions:
1. How much money do you have to spend???? $500.? $800.? $1,500.?
2. What level of photography do you aspire to "progress to" in the coming years ? (i.e. basic beginner, intermediate, or professional/business use).
For most beginners to intermediates I usually suggest one of these two manufacturers: Canon vs Nikon
1. Canon EOS Rebel model XSi. (Also known as the Canon 450D in Britain) The "kit" package comes with an 18-55mm zoom lens. The camera has pop-up flash, 12.2 Megapixels, and shutter speeds up to 1/4000th, 100-1,600 ISO sensitivity, 7 auto exposure Scene modes, PLUS Shutter Priority, Aperture Priority and Programmed Exposure Modes and Manual. It also has a 3 inch LCD screen, 3.5 frames continuous per second max., 9 point AF system, Live View Functioning and the ability to record photos in 3, 6 or 12 Megapixels PLUS numerous other great features found only on more expensive cameras. Wal-Mart is also selling them now for about $799. Sam's Club also has them for $729. I also think that Amazon dot com has them for around $650.
I bought one of these 6 months ago and use it as my "back up" camera. I absolutely love it. I have gotten some fantastic photos with it and cannot praise it enough. I routinely enlarge my photos to make 8x10's and 11x14 size enlargements with no noticeable distortion or loss of detail in the pictures.
2. Nikon D-90: If you prefer to use Nikon equipment I strongly recommend the Nikon D-90 which has 12.3 Megapixels, 3 inch monitor with Live View, 200-3,200 ISO sensitivity, 11 point AF system with Face Priority, 4.5 frames per second in continuous mode, 5 advanced Scene modes for auto exposure plus Shutter Priority, Aperture Priority, Programmed Auto plus Manual. The D-90 sells for around $900-950. (Body ONLY. The 18-55mm lens cost an additional $150.-175.) Typically, Nikon equipment is slightly more expensive than Canon equipment, but (having owned both Nikon and Canon cameras), I have seldom noticed BETTER quality results using Nikon equipment.
You might also consider the Nikon D-40 ($499) kit that comes with the 18-55mm lens. Another great choice is the Nikon D-60 kit ($649) which also comes with the 18-55mm lens. All of these Nikon's can be found at Best Buy or Amazon dot com for a very low price.
These selections are probably the best choices for any beginner to intermediate skill level, offering the most lenses and other accessories, dealers and places to purchase. Both manufacturers have a good selection of macro lenses, which is just what you need for taking close up photos of flowers.
I strongly recommend that ALL beginners buy a good book on digital photography AND take a class or two from a Vocational school or Community Education Center in your area.
You can learn more about the technical specifications of each of these two cameras at these websites:
What's considered a good number/level of mega pixels for a digital camera?
Blessed
Im looking to buy a new digital camera. I want something that takes great pictures (but obviously not a 4000 dollar professional camera) .. for good every day -type pictures, what's a decent number of mega pixels? Im looking at a 14mp camera now.. would that be any good?
Answer
Pixel counts have nothing to do with image quality. It's marketing, pushed for so many years, that consumers see it as a measure of quality. Because camera makers have painted themselves into a corner, they must continue to push more and more pixels to sell more cameras.
The sad fact is that when it comes to cell phone cameras, and all compact cameras, regardless of price or brand, they are getting worse every year, not better. The image sensors aren't getting any bigger, so the pixels must get smaller. Smaller pixels gather less light, that means more noise. These sensors also have poor contrast, dynamic range, and color. That's why you see these photos people post on facebook with tons of noise/grain, and funky color.
This is the reason I own a dSLR and why I'm looking at a compact with a large image sensor like a Sony NEX 5N, or a micro four thirds camera. Compacts have been ruined. I would not buy any 14 megapixel compact camera. But that's me personally.
I understand you have a budget, and you are not a hard core pro. Buy the compact digital camera that has the fewest pixels that has the features you want. The ones with a "BSI" (back side illuminated) CMOS sensor perform better, you'll have to dig into the specs on the official sites to find out which model has them. They can be found on Sony, and Canon compacts among others.
And finally read the reviews, they are everywhere. The real pros will post sample images in different conditions to give you a better idea of actual image quality.
What megapixel is good enough for a digital camera?
best canon digital camera for night pictures on Canon EOS 6D vs Nikon D600 | The Best Digital Camera To Buy for 2013
best canon digital camera for night pictures image
Jay Pee
We're planning to buy a digital camera.. And i just saw this cheap digital camera called "Polaroid Q20 14.0 MP" Is 14 Megapixels perfect for even taking pictures at night?
Answer
Avoid "cheap" cameras. First of all, there a few things you seem to be misinformed about here:
Megapixels do not really matter unless you are making large, poster size prints, for example 11x14 and up. 14 Megapixels is more than enough for any average camera user. Secondly, megapixels have no effect on image quality or how the camera takes pictures "at night". NO camera takes good pictures at night without good lighting- cameras rely on light to form a picture. The only thing megapixels effect is the size of the image in pixels.
Also, stay away from polaroid cameras. Get a Nikon, Canon, or Fujifilm.
What are the best settings and lenses for astro-photography using only the camera and no telescope?
Kainkin
I have a Canon Digital Rebel XTi with the standard 18-55mm lens that has an aperture of 3.5-5.6 I think and was wondering what is the best setting for that camera and lens combination to get the best results for taking pictures of the night sky (in terms of shutter speed, aperture, white balance, etc.). I do have a tripod but it is not equipped to move with the planets--no equitorial mount if that is what it is called. Also, I would like to get an inexpensive but still nice additional lens that may be better suited for astro-photography without a telescope, any suggestions?
Answer
something to try, go into your menu and turn on the long exposure noise limiter, then, get a remote and a good, strudy, heavy tri pod, go to a place with a good view of the night sky, make sure its a clear, windless night, set up the cam on the pod with the remote attached, use about an F 16 - 20 Aperture and point the cam on the biggest grouping of stars... now, zoom as far as your lens will go and put your cam into manual mode, set the shutter to "BulB" mode, this will do this: when you hit the remote, it will open the shutter, let it stay open as long as you want it.. usuall 30 mins to an hour, then hit the remote again and it closes the shutter, now, let the camera write the image to the card, this will take about the same time as it did to take the shot. What youll get: Star trails... youll be able to see the trails of light in a circular pattern made by the stars moving across the sky while your cam was filming it.. but, you need to be absolutly, in a place where you will not have any ambient lighting at all and a place with no wind or vibrations from you walking around and such.
I want to buy an instant photo camera and I have no idea as to which companies and what camera are good . I am totally new to it . I have no idea about prices too . Please help me out . I want a good camera and good photos (who dosen't ??) and I hope not too costly , I dont think I would like a digital camera coz I already have a sony handycam . Please help me out .
Answer
First you have to decide what is your intended usage for the camera.
If you have professional intentions you need to go in for a DSLR, then decide upon the model and brand.
If you just want it for fun and clicking family pictures, go for any normal digital camera that's about 10-12 megapixels. Nearly all companies have similar features, give or take a few.
Either way you will have to buy a digital camera only - film cameras are passe.
Remember a video camera's primary job is to take videos, so it'll never be too good in still photo results. The same also works vice versa for a still camera.
You can choose from various companies models like Sony, Nikon, Canon which are market leaders.
Cheaper versions would be available in companies like Minolta, Olympus etc.
You can even buy a camera online. It works out quite well for most people.
out of sony,nikon and canon,which is the best for a digicam?
v j
i want answers frm amateur n professional photographers frm india preferably.if there s a better company please tell me. i'm more interested in the quality of pics and durability rather than a stylish digicam.
Answer
Since you are looking for quality of pictures, I will point you towards the SLR's. They are head and shoulders above the point and shoot cameras for quality of pictures. In the pronsumer-level market, I favor the Nikon D80.
The February 2007 issue of Popular Photography has an article where they compared the top 10 MP DSLR's. I took the scores and ranked the cameras similar to the way Formula 1 gives championship points. I just gave 5 for 1st place down to 1 for last place, splitting the difference when cameras tied in their catagories.
They evaluated Image Quality (giving this twice as much weight as anything else), Ease of Use, Control, and System Flexibility.
The final order and my scores are:
Nikon D80 - 17.5 points
- BEST in Image Quality, Control and System Flexibility
Canon Rebel XTi (400D) - 13.5 points
- Tied for best in System Flexibility
Pentax K10D - 11 points
- Tied for best in Ease of Use
Samsung GX10 - 11 points
- Tied for best in Ease of Use
Sony Alpha 100 - 7 points
- LAST in Image Quality, Ease of Use and System Flexibility."
Then again, this is the same magazine that put the Sony Alpha 100 dead last in this comparison named it the camera of the year in the previous issue! (In a follow-up to this seeming error, Pop Photo published the explanation that only the D80 and the Sony had been tested by the end-of-year deadline for choosing the Camera of the Year. Sony won on the strength of low price and built-in image stabilization. The other 3 that beat Sony in shoot-out were not tested until after the Camera of the Year was selected, because they were not yet available.)
Go to the original question and read the responses for more opinions.
If you want to get the "best" for the real world, consider the Nikon D200 or Canon 30D if you can afford it. For about $300-500 less, look at the results of the recent PopPhoto test and choose from that list according to your taste.
Personally, I use a Nikon D200 and would recommend it without hesitation to someone who has some knowledge of photography. For someone who wants the "best," but is starting with somewhat of an "entry level" knowledge base, I'd suggest the Nikon D80.
There are people out there who will state their preference for the Canon cameras and I will not argue with them. The Canon 30D and 400D are excellent cameras as well.
You would have to visit a camera store or camera department and pick them up and see what you think.
This review is now available online at:
Here's another reference from outside the photographic press. Consumer reports compared the Nikon D80, Canon Rebel XTi and Sony Alpha. Personally, I'd say that the Nikon came out on top here, also. It beats the Sony in "noise-free ISO" with an acceptable rating at ISO 1600 (kind of optimistic, I think...) compared to the Sony's ISO 400. It beats the Canon (in my opinion) by having a spot meter that the Canon does not offer.
Here's another comparison of interest:
[Note the navigation menu near the top of the review]
The next thing to consider is what lens to start with and where you go from there. If you are new to this, I'd say to just get the "kit" lens, which seems to be the 18-135 lens for the D80, and get started. Once you know where you really want to go with your photography, Nikon has an almost unlimited family of lenses to choose from.
What lens would I use to take portrait style pictures with my Canon Digital Rebel XT?
vrh4201022
I am going to be buying a Canon Digital Rebel XT and I have no idea on which lens does what. I need a lens that will take sharp portrait style pictures (and full body shots) indoors, nothing would be more then say 5-10 feet away. If I could get the name of the lens or something I could look it up by. Thanks a ton =)
Answer
Generally speaking it is a common conception that lenses in the 85 to 135 mm range are portrait lenses. Although at 85mm at 5-10 feet away you arent going to get a full body shot of anyone other than a toddler. The kit lens that comes with the XT, although not the sharpest lens out there, is actually a good starting point. 18mm is pretty good for a full body and 55mm is pretty good for a head and shoulders shot. You may want to get a better lens later but you are going to want to get used to your camera first.
http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/415470-REG/Canon__EOS_Digital_Rebel_XT.html with a 17-85mm lens with IS (image stabilization)
Additional:
If you want Canons best lenses you will want an L series lens.
http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/397662-USA/Canon_0344B002_24_105mm_f_4L_IS_USM.html
Most L series lenses will put the L after the f/# i.e. f/4L or f/2.8L
