Best digital camera for traveling?

Kendra

Hi~

I will be leaving on a long trip very soon and am looking for a digital camera to bring with me. Here is what I am looking for:

Uses AA batteries
Does not require software to upload photos
8 megapixels or higher
Has the ability to manipulate ISO settings.

I'm not exactly a camera aficionado, and I'm not trying to take award-winning photos... just the typical type stuff. Any suggestions at all would be appreciated! Thanks!

Answer
canon a590

All of the major brands are good. Choose a brand that appeals to you. Then you have to think about getting a spare battery, what size memory card, if you want an extended warranty, how much you can afford, what size zoom, if you want manual controls, the size of the camera, finding a reliable place to purchase it, and the list goes on and on and on.......

The first thing to realize is that almost any digital camera will take good pictures. If more people would read the manual more than once, they would be able to take better pictures. Usually, the person assumes it is the camera when it could be them not knowing exactly what to do. Just give yourself more photographic knowledge by doing more reading on the internet.

I really believe buying a camera is an individual choice.
The person needs to read alot of reviews on cameras so they can decide on the features that they really want and need.
Go to the store and hold them so you can see if they feel comfortable in your hands. If possible, take some pictures in the store to check the quality of the pictures.
I can only give a suggestion of what to look for in a new digital camera.
Good Luck

Digital Cameras for Travel?

Africana82

I'm looking to purchase a digital camera soon for travel. I'll be taking many pictures and am looking for a camera that has great quality. However, I know next to nothing about cameras- does anyone have feedback as to which companies/models I should look into?

Answer
It really depends on what you will be taking photos of and when you be taking them. You got to look at the zoom and flash and pixel quality of the camera, but most important when traveling the weight and size as you don't want to be lugging around a heavy camera.

I really when buying a new camera only look at three models Olympus and G4TV had a recent review of one that may suit you Olympus PEN E-PL2. Then there is Canon now I am not sure of what you like but zoom features is always good and I think they are doing better, but as I could only find G4TV review of Canon PowerShot SD4500 I do say PowerShot models is something to take a look at as it is smaller and still has good quality but in the sources is a link to Canon PowerShot SD4500. Then there is Nikon and it easy to use abilities the models are good and everything take a look at this model Nikon Coolpix S4000 and see the link in the source.

The best bet is to look or try to think of the type of pictures you be taking and look and deiced by asking or looking at reviews of the latest cameras but I would stick to one of these brands as they are in my opinion the best in the business. In short Olympus has the best picture editing and special effects, Canon like the name says it has the great zoom and focusing out of them, and Nikon is the easiest to use. I would go first with the Canon then Olympus and if I had to Nikon. Hope that helps.

Does the Canon PowerShot 7.1MP Digital Camera - SD750 include batteries?????

pinkkiperf

um im thinking about getting this camera but i dont know what batteries it takes or if it comes with batteries, uh if you dont like this camera what camera do you think if should get?

Answer
Most digital cameras come with your charger and rechargeable battery, or two-four regular AA batteries to get you started. They also will include small things like a USB cord, and a strap.

Make sure that if the camera does not come with a rechargeable battery and charger, to get one when you purchase it. Digicams tend to go through regular batteries like toilet paper.

Canon's Powershot line is a very good and simple line of cameras. They are backed by very good customer service that Canon offers, unlike some other brands that I have dealt with like Sony or HP. I actually looked at the camera you are thinking about purchasing, and it looks nice- if you play with it and think you don't like it Casio, Pentax, and Fuji all make very nice cameras that are similar. Personally, I have always preferred Canon though. Everyone gets biased towards their favorite brand.

Digital Camera Battery?

Debt Free!

Has anyone tried the Energizer Lithium AA Battery for their digital camera. Did they really last longer than the regular AA battery. Just want to know before I buy, they are rather expensive. What about the rechargable batteries, any thoughts on them? I'm tired of my camera eating other batteries. I have a Canon A540. Thanks.

Answer
Lithium is a great battery, but costly. I recomend you look for the highest capacity nickel metal hydride rechargable batteries you can find with a charger. I use to own the A540, but upgraded to the A710is. Both are nice cameras. I use Duracell 2650 MAH batteries in them, and they last very well. Your A540 has a decent view finder on it. It's better than the view finder on the A710is.....honest. Because of that, you can use the view finder with relative ease as opposed to the LCD, which eats batteries, and, washes out under bright sunlight. (lots of digital do that). The downside of the view findes is 1) no diopter, and 2) it's only about 80% as accurate as your LCD screen. If those items are unimportant to you, then use your view finder as much as possible. When I had the A540, I was a little disappointed with how it tended to wash out on bright sunny days. My advice to you is switch to the "P" mode, then set the ISO to 100. That will help.

download software for a digital camera?

thyckchick

i have a canon powershot s30 digital camera i need to install the software where can i get the software installed for free online

Answer
go to this page:

http://www.usa.canon.com/consumer/controller?act=DownloadDetailAct&fcategoryid=322&modelid=7489

click on Drivers / software

then select the software you need and download it

Can't download pictures off Camera. (Is there possibly a corrupt file I should delete or reinstall)?

Brian

I got a brand new camera, all the cables are fine and I've had digital cameras before that work on this computer. But, I can't download pictures off the camera, even with Microsoft's tool.
It's a Nikon Coolpix L14. I also had a Canon Powershot camera that had the same problem. I thought it was just a problem with the Canon, as it just stopped working one day, but now I see it must be a driver issue or something.

I have a Windows XP SP2 computer.

here are some pictures of the problem:
http://i16.photobucket.com/albums/b4/ms3/Nikon%20Coolpix%20L14/L14Connected.jpg
http://i16.photobucket.com/albums/b4/ms3/Nikon%20Coolpix%20L14/interfacenotregistered.jpg
http://i16.photobucket.com/albums/b4/ms3/Nikon%20Coolpix%20L14/cameracantbeopened.jpg
http://i16.photobucket.com/albums/b4/ms3/Nikon%20Coolpix%20L14/universalserialbuscontrollers.jpg

Or, if you prefer, a video:
http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=1226838047104625946&hl=en

I am stumped.
I don't think it's the memory, because the camera has internal memory, as well as a memory card I've tried.

I also don't think it's a cable. It's brand new, and I treat my equipment with care. Neither camera works; it is unlikely both USB cables went bad.

I installed the camera's software several times after trying different combinations... and I have tried every variation with ports / power / restart, plugging in and powering the camera.

Odd, yes.

Answer
Win XP should be plug and play and using the scanner and camera wizard should be trouble free.
So, I'm a little stumped too.
Did you install the new camera's software?
The third message says the camera cannot be opened. You DID connect it to the computer while it was turned off, and then turned it on once it was connected?
The USB port seems to be ok. Have you tried another port just to make sure?

The easy solution (if you can't rectify the problem) is to just go out and buy a card reader. Your computer will see it as a removable drive and you can easily transfer your images that way.

good luck...

which canon digital camera is the best?

anonymous

I'm considering to buy one of the models below :

1. Canon Powershot SD4000 IS
2. Canon PowerShot S90
3. Canon PowerShot SX210 IS

or any other digital cameras you would recommend as a second choice? thanks!

Answer
I would get the Canon with longest zoom which appears to be the Canon Powershot SX 210 IS.
The other cameras seem to have only a 3x optical zoom, which I feel is too short a zoom. You buy a camera to take good pictures, which all of these cameras will due. But after a while you are going to want a long lens. The SX 210 IS lens is equal to a 35mm lens of 28mm -to- 392mm. That should cover anything that you are likely to encounter.

Canon PowerShot S90 or Canon PowerShot SD4000IS?

CWD

Without saying much, because I don't want to influence other's thoughts... I am needing to make a decision on a new point and shoot in a couple of days.

1. No, I do not want a dslr. I want a portable camera with a lot of punch.
2. I want it to perform fantastically in low-light settings

I have narrowed it down to these two cameras. Any any experience with either? Which should I choose?

Thanks in advance!!!

Answer
I would recommend you buying Canon PowerShot S90 10MP Digital Camera
# Improved low-light image performance, plus a Low Light scene mode for ISO settings up to 12,800
# Customizable control ring for easy access and operation of manual or other creative shooting settings
# Wide-angle 3.8x optical zoom with Canon's Optical Image Stabilizer; bright f/2.0 lens
# RAW + JPEG shooting and recording modes;

Canon Digital Camera's?

x0xMimix0x

Hey so I want to buy a canon camera or nikon that's affordable so i can take pictures throughout my high schools years :) I've been looking but i can't seem to find a good one. I want it to have good video, clear images, and focus because i'll be whipping it out to take random photo's alot. Opinions?
Thanks!
P.S. I want it to be slim, so i can carry it around easily. and price range, no more than 300 bucks.

Answer
Best would be to go and see for yourself which cameras from Canon and Nikon you like. All the cameras they make are pretty decent.

If you can spend an extra $100 somehow, the Canon S95 would be the best choice. It has great quality compared to all other point and shoot cameras (when used correctly)

which has better video recording canon s95 or Panasonic zs7 (both are digital picture cameras)?

J

I like both cameras, s95 has better picture quality, but which has better Video quality?

Seeking for the best 2 in 1 camera, thaty has best picture and video in 1 device.

Answer
I think you should go with Panasonic Lumix DMC-ZS7 12.1 MP Digital Camera
12.1-megapixel effective recording
12X optical zoom (4X digital/48X total zoom)
Built-in GPS function lets you keep track of your photos by location
Optical image stabilization

whats the best digital camera on the market for a low price but good quality?

shell

Answer
I think the best deal of the season is the Canon Powershot A530. It has been on sale at numberous big box stores below $130. That's a good price on a good camera. The A530 was selling for $180 not too long ago. I've recommended this camera within my own family, so I'll be living with the results of this recommendation right along with you. You can use the rest of your budget to buy a decent memory card.

Go here and read an extensive review:

http://www.steves-digicams.com/2006_reviews/a530.html

Skip to this page if you just want the final word:

http://www.steves-digicams.com/2006_reviews/a530_pg6.html

Check the sample images, too.

This will blow your mind:

http://www.kenrockwell.com/tech/150-vs-5000-dollar-camera.htm

If you find a little more in the budget...

http://www.steves-digicams.com/2006_reviews/a540.html

This weekend, Sears (and others, I am sure) have the A540 for $170.

Check this out for specs and comparison to another camera:

http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/compare_post.asp?method=sidebyside&cameras=canon_a530%2Cfuji_finepixf20%2Ccanon_a540&show=all

The Canon's have an optical viewfinder, which I feel is essential, especially if you don't want to be one of the people coming back here in January complaining that your camera uses batteries too fast. The Canon's zoom to 140 instead of 105, which is significant. The Canon's use SD memory cards, which are always easy to find. The Canon's can use "AA" batteries, including rechargeable batteries or anything you can buy in a drug store. (Lithium are the best.)

The Fuji has a larger sensor, which may provide better low light performance. The Fuji is lighter and smaller.

Canon Camera Lens Help!?

ecoetzee

I have a camera from Canon. The model is EOS 20D (it's digital). I want to buy a new lens for it but I do not know which model lens to buy. I want a macro lens and I did find this one: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0007WK8KS/ref=ord_cart_shr?ie=UTF8&m=AXMP0WYU19SSS

Would this lens work properly with my camera? Please help! Best answer = 10 POINTS! Thank you so much!

Answer
I would consider Tamron AF 18-200mm f/3.5-6.3 XR Di II LD Aspherical (IF) Macro Zoom Lens for Canon Digital SLR Cameras

Since the lens is designed exclusively for digital SLR photography, it provides high image quality in terms of resolution
It employs a new optical system designed to confine the changing angles of incidences of light rays reaching the imager over the entire image field.
Peripheral light fall-off is minimized when compared with that of conventional lenses
Complicated mechanisms are built in the compact body thanks to new mechanical artifices. The lens is a multi-purpose zoom lens, excellent portability
The Zoom Lock prevents unwanted barrel extension when carrying the lens/camera combination

Good Macro Lens for Canon Digital Rebel XSi 12MP Camera?

Thinkers

I just purchased a Canon Digital Rebel XSi 12MP Digital SLR Camera and wanted to be able to take closeup shots of ants and insects ect... so I purchased this macro lens from amazon http://www.amazon.com/Sigma-70-300mm-4-5-6-Telephoto-Cameras/dp/B000ALLMI8/ref=sr_1_6?ie=UTF8&s=photo&qid=1216258079&sr=1-6

However when I take pictures with the macro lens the ants and insects are still very small. What kind of lens or additional equipment do I need so that I can magnify the images more?

Answer
The lens you purchased isn't actually a true macro lens, it just has the ability to focus a little closer than other similar focal length lenses, so they add macro to the name. To do true macro with a Canon there is currently only 5 Canon made lenses.

EF 50mm f/2.5
EF-S 60mm f/2.8
MP-E 65mm f/2.8
EF 100mm f/2.8
EF 180mm f/3.5L

Of course you can always add extension tubes to get 1:1 magnification on your current lens, but it probably doesn't have the flat-field projection that true macro lenses have.

Of the 5 lenses I listed, I would only consider the last three. The 50mm and 60mm are good for documents, but not so much for photographing bugs. The 180mm f/3.5L is a great lens, but if your not ready for the expense and image quality of an L series lens you'll probably want to get the 100mm f/2.8. This is the macro lens I usually recommend for those just getting started in macro.

Finally, the MP-E 65mm f/2.8 can get up to 5x magnification. This lens has a lot of extension built into it. If you want lots of magnification, this is the lens for you.

4-nikon d3100..

or do u have any suggestion for any other camera??
im also in love with the sony t99 compact camera..

now. help me decide.

Answer
Get a Canon SX120. It's pretty cheap, and it's the best option you can want for an affordable, everyday-use, compact camera which shoots pretty pictures. My friend has this camera, and her pictures are really nice, here's a few examples. ;) http://2.bp.blogspot.com/__LvSp59UEgU/TOucGDOcTdI/AAAAAAAAEV0/FiPGpH3YEPI/s1600/6.JPG, http://2.bp.blogspot.com/__LvSp59UEgU/TN5A6WwYMbI/AAAAAAAAERs/wlWRa9IlUeM/s1600/12.jpg,

It's a great camera ;)
PLUS it's only about $229.90. A price like that can't go wrong ;)

Here's the Canon site for it. http://www.usa.canon.com/cusa/consumer/products/cameras/digital_cameras/powershot_sx120_is

If you're looking for a really affordably DSLR, try a Nikon D30000. You can actually get it really cheap, and the pictures are the same as about any other DSLR, amazing quality. Here's a sample photo. http://www.nikonmexico.com/en_INC/IMG/Assets/Digital-SLR/2010/25462-Nikon-D3000/Photography/25462_D3000_ER10.jpg I have a Nikon too, and here's my picture https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhwaafumDlMUjRu7ksIvDLrGcsKuZsLY1H4n-N-OYuRNUGp3e3wrVP3-86S_T8ieLeJ07dyHY-7cQ2ajtWNemWEuPZSsQkz5vZmv91hyTxBTHwmE9h8vSsN7RH_sizysIpBDvnc9mtbqtc/s640/%25233.jpg ;) Have fun!

Canon digital camera IX US 950IS displays "lens error".?

Saras

I have a Canon digital camera IS. While cleaning the camera I pressed the on/off button & get a message "lens error , restart camera". The lens doesn't close now. Have I messed up with my camera? Any help?

Answer
Here are some troubleshooting steps that you can try that may (or may not) correct your problem. They only seem to work for less than 40% of the lens errors, but if the camera is out of warranty (or repair cost approaches that of the camera), they're worth that try. Some of the later steps do involve some risk to the camera, so carefully weigh your options before deciding to conduct them:
http://camerarepair.blogspot.com/2007/12/fixing-lens-error-on-digital-camera.html

Canon PowerShot SD1300 IS IXUS 105 Digital Camera is acting weird....help?

Kyra

when i am in the playback mode, looking through pictures, the screen will cut off. the lens does not retract and if i press the on/off button, the camera turns back on, but then cuts off again whenever i'm trying to look through pics. Is this a problem where I need to send it back to the manufacturer or exchange it at the store or can i fix this somehow? Thank you!
Battery is full.

Answer
It shouldn't be doing that. If it's acting up like this, and the camera is new, recommend exchanging it for a different one from your store. If the store won't exchange it, contact Canon to arrange warranty repair (1-800-OK-CANON).

For others running into this issue who don't have the benefit of warranty coverage...

Things to check first for a camera that won't turn on, or has power issues, are battery contact points, and micro switches that are located on the battery and memory card doors. Troubleshooting tips on other things that need to be checked may be seen here. These tips won't work for every case, but they're worth a try.

What is a good digital camera that takes HD video AND photos?

Starfish

I want a camera that will be awesome to film with and awesome to take still photos with.

I know there's EOS 5D Mark II, but what else is there?

Answer
There is the Nikon D5000, Canon EOS 500D, and the Pentax K-x.

Here is quick price estimate:
Nikon D5000 12MP DSLR Digital Camera with 18-55mm VR Lens - $650
Canon EOS Rebel T1i (500D) 15MP DSLR w/EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS Lens - $769
Pentax K-x 12MP DSLR with 18-55mm Zoom - $550

The 1st link is to a web page that has these 3 DSLR cameras listed so that you can compare features and spec but also there are links for each of these cameras to review pages that include sample images.

I am a Nikon user, but if I were buying one of these cameras right now, it would be the Pentax K-x. I have been reading it up on this camera and I have come across some impressive information. Below I included some links, the photo.net link is to a forum where a photograper posted some black & white images shot at some high ISOs (6400 ISO, 10000 ISO, and 1250 ISO) and they look great. The reviews are good and to me the video I have seen on youtube looks good.

Hope this helps.

where could i buy the Canon nb-5l battery ?

Thirdshopp

my Canon camera don't work, the battery is broken, could you help me ?

Answer
I only buy OEM batteries (in this case, Canon). I would purchase it from either my local camera shop OR B&H Photo.... http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/425695-REG/Canon_1135B001_NB_5L_Lithium_Ion_Battery_3_7v.html

If you insist on buying a third party brand, then I would suggest that you buy the matching charger to go with it. A cheaper battery may not have the proper charging circuitry for the Canon charger to be able to determine the battery's condition.

IF I were to get a third party brand, the only one I would use is Pearstone (along with the Pearstone charger)....in other words, along with a $19.95 Pearstone NB-5L battery, I would get the $79.95 Pearstone NB-5L charger instead of spending $42.40 for the Canon battery.

WHERE TO GET CHEAP CANON CAMERA BATTERY CHARGER?

... that works well and will not mess up my camera battery or camera.

Just want to know best, reliable source.

don't want to just buy something that is imported

Digital Camera?

Hi,

I am planning on buy a digital Camera, but I donât know which brand and module should I buy.
I usually use my cell phone Cam which is 2 mega pixel and has a flash. My friend recommended Sony cameras but I am not really sure.

I am not looking for a super professional Camera, because I just want to take simple shots.

All I am looking for is a camera that would take good shots at night. Also, since my hands shake when I take close picture and I canât stay still while taking pictures of other, I would like a camera that could overcome my problem.

Right ! my budget is 350 and less dollars.
Thanks ^^,

Answer
with a budget of $350 you can purchase a good simple camera... your friend is right stick to either sony or canon.. i prefer canon over sony myself because sony has only one better advantage over canon when it comes to cameras.. and thats using the "camcorder" mode.

The problem that you say about your hands shaking well.. that happens to everyone.. when you go to purchase a camera, make sure it has ISO.. (a type of image stabilizer) which means that it will help you focus the lens before it takes the shot... blurry free!

Let me see what cameras are good that would be something you would like that's in your budget...

What's the best Canon Powershot Digital Camera that suits my wants?

What's the best Canon Powershot Digital Camera that suits my wants?
1. it zooms very far
2. the battery lasts long after full charging HOURS!!
3. at least 10 megapixels
4. user friendly
5. when shaken during picture taking, the picture is not blurry.
6. very fast shutter speed
7. with video recorder
8. has macro feature
9. doesn't take too long when pressed, because some other cameras are just tooo slow and instead of taking good pictures, they suck
10. with sequence photos
11. with self-timer
12. with a very good flash during the night
13. 400 US dollars or 20,000 philippine peso and below is the price range.
14. and the camera should LAST LONG!!

THANKS!!!!

Answer
People so often ask: "Which one is a good camera to buy?"
Here is my 10 cents on the subject:

Point & Shoot cameras are wonderfully handy because of their small size.
When light conditions are ideal, they even take really nice photos - all of them do.

However, they all DO have limitations - they don't do very well in low light situations (i.e. noisy photos, hard to avoid blur, etc). The little onboard flash is very harsh at close range, and doesn't reach very far.
Many of them have no manual functions, so you are limited to only very basic photos, you can't compensate for unusual situations, or do many fun "tricks" and special effects.
P&S's also suffer from frustrating shutterlag and many of them chew through batteries rather quickly.

However, if you're ok with all those limitations, then go ahead and pick one, most of them (the same type and same price range) are rather similar. Personally I would pick either a Canon or a Nikon, and would certainly stay away from Kodak.

A higher end P&S will give you more manual options and better quality. Many of those even give you the option of adding a proper flash (which makes a big difference to your flash photos).

Don't worry too much about megapixelsâ¦. there is a limit to how many pixels you can squash into a tiny P&S sensor before you actually LOSE quality rather than gain it.
Don't worry about digital zoom, in fact, don't EVER use it. It simply crops away pixels, i.e. destroys information. The only real zoom is optical.

Decide which features are important to you, and look for cameras that have that feature.
Then go compare a few models on www.dpreview.com .

The very best thing you can do for your success is to borrow some books and learn about photography. A bit of knowledge will make a much bigger difference to your photos than your choice of P&S camera can.

For what it's worth - if I was in the market for a P&S camera right now, my choice would be a Canon Powershot SX10 IS http://www.usa.canon.com/consumer/controller?act=ModelInfoAct&fcategoryid=144&modelid=17630

P.S. forget about your rule #5 - no camera can handle being shaken without blurring the photo.

Where can I buy a stylish camera case/bag?

Q. I need a camera bag for my Canon 550d, but they are all great big black bulky things - is there anywhere I can buy a CUTE bag for a DSLR camera?

Thanks :)
Um. I was looking for under £20 lol

I bought the Canon 550d with 60% off with my Christmas money and the money I saved up through my part time job

It's just that all the bags are plain black and don't look very nice :(

Answer
I've got a Lowepro rucksack style bag which is black and quite big/heavy, so it mostly stays at home & I use it to store most of my lenses in!

For doing street photography I use a Crumpler bag - ideal for holding a DSLR with one or two lenses, but without the camera in it (as I use it), it holds my purse, keys, phone & spare lenses whilst I'm shooting.

Crumpler bags vary in size (& obviously, price!), but they do a range from about £12 up (I paid £30 for mine which is green with embroidery stitching).

Just look on ebay for Crumpler camera bags.

Should I buy an Iphone 5 or a Canon camera?

Beln

I want to take good quality pictures. I'm not very photogenic and I really want to take good pictures. I have a digital cam but i look fugly.

Answer
Using a TELEPHONE to take photos won't make you look any better in them.

Phones are meant for talking to people, not for taking photos. Even the best phone "camera" doesn't compare to a basic P&S camera.

If you want to take decent photos of yourself, it is about learning how to do it properly, not about buying a phone and expecting miracles from it.

How to take better self portraits

Rule # 1: Do NOT make a duck face (this is a general tip - don't have a fit if it doesn't apply to YOU)!
Rule # 2: Don't just hold the camera in your outstretched hand, that is such an awful look! It distorts your features and screams: "SNAPSHOT !!!!!".
Rule #3: No mirror photos - they are passé and even a little pathetic.

Use a CAMERA - not a telephone and not a webcam.
Make an effort to take a decent photo, then you either won't even need to post-process it, or at least it would be worth while to do so.
Make sure your camera is set to the biggest possible size and the highest possible quality. Pay attention to the lighting and to your background.
Take a photo when and where there is enough (diffused) light - you do NOT want to use a little on-camera flash!

If you don't have a tripod (or better still an assistant), put your camera on a little bag of rice on top of something sturdy and use the self timer to take a much better photo of yourself.

Hope this helps.

which digital slr to buy? or non-digital?

I'm looking to buy an SLR camera, but I am on a /very/ tight budget. $300 or less. Is it better to go digital or film? Which cameras do you recommend?

Answer
Canon makes the best Digital SLR in the world today.

I myself own one (Canon Rebel XT) and now they have come up with a new model Canon Rebel XTi I'm sure this one is much better than what I have.

I'm completely satisfied with the features and functionalities of my canon and would highly recommend you to buy this.

You may use the Canon's official website to find out more about the latest models in digital SLRs
http://www.usa.canon.com/consumer/controller?act=ModelDetailAct&fcategoryid=139&modelid=14256

OR you can check out the reviews at
http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/canoneos300d/

The following is the official Canon site regarding the product information. You can pick the camera of your choice of a product released in the year 2000 all the way up to 2006.

Happy clicking!!

Cheers,

Is it possible to download the camera required for this camera?

Bucephalus

Alright, long story short, this is the camera I am buying, however, it looks like a cd-rom is required to be able to use it. (Installing something before my computer will read the camera's images or some such thing); however, my computer's disc tray is broken and I can not currently afford to fix it. Would it be possible to download the required programs for this camera anywhere or even from the official website. I have looked, and admittedly, it's late and I may have missed something, but it didn't look as though I could download the required software. And yes I saw the drivers/software tab on it. Just nothing to actually DOWNLOAD the program.

http://www.usa.canon.com/cusa/consumer/products/cameras/digital_cameras/powershot_a4000_is_blue?color=Silver
Ha, just noticed the silliness of the title. I look like a moron. Please disregard that.
@Looney: If you had payed any attention, rather than skimming, I did say it was late at night, AND that I saw the software/download area, HOWEVER, there was no DOWNLOAD button.

"And yes I saw the drivers/software tab on it. Just nothing to actually DOWNLOAD the program."

Answer
firstly you wont need the bloatware to use your camera as you can use windows programs to both download the pics and view them from the camera and they are built in already.

Second, just get someone else (or the shop) to download the program and copy into a USB stick. Use you this to transfer all that you (dont) need to your PC.

Good luck

Need help deciding on a new camera..Nikon or Canon?

Adelyn

I can't spend more than $500-600. I am thinking about getting either a Nikon D40 or a Canon Digital Rebel Xs.If you have used either or both of these cameras please let me know what you think of them! Which would you recommend?
P.S. If you are going to suggest another camera don't even mention Kodak or Olympus...they suck :)
Thanks in advance! =]
I have never owned either brand so thats why I am unsure. I have had a Kodak Easyshare and A Casio Exilim. Both just simple point and shoot cameras so I am ready for something closer to what a photog would use :]

Answer
Canon cameras seem to perform very well and would be my first choice, but would prefer to give you all the information I have and let you make an informed decision. Hope the following will help!

There are so many cameras out there it is difficult to say which is best, but digital is definitely the way to go. The following link will be very helpful as it list most of the cameras out there with prices. http://reviews.cnet.com/digital-cameras/

What gives a camera its picture quality? The following information should help you know what to look for in a camera.

The short answer is that it is mostly the skill of the photographer that produces high quality pictures. The lens and camera are very important, but the ability to set the scene, adjust the cameras settings, and hold the camera very still or use a tripod with auto or remote shutter actuation when required is what gets the great pictures.

Many of the new cameras come with only an LCD screen. Would suggest that you find one that also has an optical view finder because the LCD screen is almost impossible to see in bright sun.

Higher mega pixels may not really be the best thing to look for. It is more expensive, takes longer to process, and may not be needed unless you are making a really large picture or blowing up a small part of a picture.

Check this more camera for the money FUJIFILM - FinePix 10.0-Megapixel Digital. Life time Warranty (Parts & Labor).
Wide-angle shooting, a 12x optical zoom and picture stabilization mode combine in this camera for exceptional shooting performance, even at a distance. Plentiful scene modes, autofocus and automatic white balance controls make this camera a snap to operate. You may be able to find it on the Internet for a lower price ($144), but be careful of the vendor.

This could be the best slim line camera. It's PINK!

The information about my camera is just to show that you don't need the biggest and best. Just know how to use the one you have.
My camera has 5.2 mega pixel, but I use 3 most of the time because it gives great results, is faster, and takes less memory. Also, it only has a 3 x optical zoom and 7x digital zoom. I never use the digital zoom because making pictures larger works better on the computer. This is an old camera, but everyone is impressed with the quality pictures it takes ... like magic.

Check with the Geeks in several stores and compare prices. Ask what cameras they own, but don't believe everything you hear. Once you select a camera read all about it in the owner's manual. Just learned that my camera has red-eye prevention and correction. It also has adaptive lighting. You may be able to view the owners manual at this link, but will need to Login. http://www.retrevo.com/s/digital+camera ...

The source links will show most of the cameras out there with prices and help make your digital cameras work better.

What should I know about cleaning my Canon Rebel XS digital camera and what supplies do I need?

C.J.Darlin

I am preparing to buy a Canon Rebel XS and don't know anything about how to clean the lenses or the camera itself. Should I be buying any supplies with the camera that I'll need in the future (i.e. canned air, cloth, etc.)? I'd like to make sure I take care of this thing well. What should I know ahead of time about the care and maintenance of this camera?

Answer
Just buy the camera, attach a Skylight or UV filter to the lens straight from the store, get some lens cleaning kits for the front of the lens which is basically the filter, the viewfinder and the LCD at the back. If you only use one lens, never take it off the camera to eliminate the chances of dust entering the body. Don't wipe it with any solution or water. A clean soft dry cloth will do for the rest of the camera's exterior will do. Canned air? You might want to avoid that. The pressure might knock the mirror off it's natural position and worse, push more dirt further into the crevices of the lens and body. That takes care of the cleaning part.

Remove the batteries before storing. Store the camera in a dry and well ventilated area. Never place it with your clothes in the cabinet. It would be nice if it had it's own air-tight box and throw in some Silica gel dessicants in there to handle the moisture. You can get a dry box with a hygrometer if you really want the best in moisture control. Storage, check.

Remember to use it regularly. The camera likes being used. Always wear the strap when using the camera. Do not store the strap together with the camera when not in use for a long time. The strap is the highest source of moisture that can affect your prized possession. Hand-wash your strap if you happen to perspire on it. Strap, the camera's life-saver - very important.

So, what's all the fuss about moisture? It stains the glass. Worse, it attracts fungi that can physically destroy the coatings of your lens.

HD Digital Cameras?

I'm looking for a good HD Digital Camera that takes HD pictures and HD video.
A list or web link would be best so I can compare

Answer
HD video cameras are available here

http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/410434-REG/Sony_HDCX310K_HDC_X310_HD_Multi_Purpose_Video.html

There is no HD digital camera per se.

Yes there are professional cameras like the Nikon D3, Canon 1Ds Mark III, Mamiya with digital back (22MP sensor) and the new Hasselblad H3D (39MP sensor) available, the HDR is a process which three or more images are combined to make one ..

which SLR should i buy? canon digital rebel XT or a nikon d40?

maria

im a first time SLR user..im kinda confused about which camera i should buy... Canon digital rebel Xt and the nikon d40...

Answer
Nikon D40 vs. Canon EOS 350D (Rebel XT)

I have never used a Canon EOS 350D, so I can't actually compare the cameras, but I favor the D40 because it has a spotmeter and the 350D doesn't. Although the D40 seems small, it is practically the exact same size as the 350D.

http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/compare_post.asp?method=sidebyside&cameras=canon_eos350d%2Cnikon_d40&show=all

http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/nikond40/page17.asp
tells us that the Canon 350D meter calibration is off by about 1/3 of a stop. This would not really present any problems, except that it suggests "something" to me about the quality, since the Nikon and Pentax are dead on.

Scroll on down the page for image comparisons. The D40 is clearly sharper and shows less noise at all ISO settings.

http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/nikond40/page18.asp shows us that both handle shadows equally, but the D40 clips the highlights by about 1/3 of a stop.

http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/nikond40/page21.asp shows a side-by-side of studio images. The 8 MP of the Canon 350D at least put the camera on equal footing with the Nikon D40 for image quality, but you have to take note that the Rebel XT is shot at ISO 100 and the Nikon is shot at it lowest setting of ISO 200. I think the Canon images may look a little better, but we know from the prior page that under equal lighting levels, the Canon will start to break up before the Nikon.

The reviewer says, "While it is possible to pick areas of the image which lend some credence to the EOS 350D's 34% pixel count advantage it's clear that the average observer would not notice these differences and that you would need a very large output size for any of them to become visible."

Check this out...

http://dpreview-img.fotki.com/gallery/canoneos350d_samples1/originals/img_4068-raw-dpp.jpg is taken by the Canon 350D with a 17 mm focal length at f/6.3, 1/80th of a second, ISO 400 using RAW.

http://dpreview-img.fotki.com/gallery/nikond40_samples/originals/dsc_1206.jpg is taken with the Nikon D40 with an 18 mm focal length at f/4.5, 1/80th of a second, ISO 400 using jpeg.

The point of focus for the Canon photo is a bit deeper than it is for the Nikon, but even having 8MP and using RAW and a smaller aperture, I think the Canon image breaks up a lot more than the Nikon. You can barely make out the features on the face of the gentleman in the background. Is this the camera or the superiority of the Nikon 17-55 lens, which so many of us here praise???

Okay, I've made my stance clear. I like the Nikon D40 better than the Canon EOS 350D, so here's my general review of the D40.

The Nikon D40 is a great little camera, very easy to use and quite reasonably priced. It has a few "consumer friendly" totally automatic modes that make it very easy to use, but still offers total photographic control when you are ready to take charge. It will get you in the Nikon family which is a great place to be. If you buy accessories and lenses, you will be able to use everything on any Nikon that you might upgrade to later on.

Check out Nikon's "Picturetown" promotion, where they handed out 200 D40's in Georgetown, SC. http://www.stunningnikon.com/picturetown/

Here are a few reviews, in case you have not read them yet. Be sure to note that they are several pages long and some of the reviews also have some sample images that you can look at.

http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/nikond40/
http://www.steves-digicams.com/2007_reviews/nikon_d40.html
http://www.popphoto.com/cameras/3756/camera-test-nikon-d40.html
http://www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/d40/d40-recommendations.htm

I hate to see people slam the camera because it can't autofocus with older Nikon lenses. It is true that there is a "slight problem" with older Nikon lenses not autofocusing on the D40, but if you do not own a bag full of older lenses, it is not going to be a problem. It is barely a problem anyhow. If you check www.nikonusa.com for "AF-S" lenses, which are ALL 100% compatible with the D40, you will find 23 lenses, including 7 "VR" (vibration Reduction) lenses and one true macro lens with "VR". There are another 25-plus lenses in the current catalog that provide all functions except autofocus as well as many (possibly dozens) "out of print" lenses that will work just as well. In addition, although these lens will not autofocus, most of them will still give focus confirmation. From the D40 manual: "If the lens has a maximum aperture of f/5.6 of faster, the viewfinder focus indicator can be used to confirm whether the portion of the subject in the selected focus area is in focus. After positioning the subject in the active focus area, press the shutter release button halfway and rotate the lens focusing ring until the in-focus indicator is displayed." (See http://www.members.aol.com/swf08302/nikonafs.txt for a list of AF-S lenses.)

The D40 only has 3 autofocus zones arranged horizontally at the center, 9 o'clock and 3 o'clock positions. This might be considered a limitation, but realistically, most people will find this perfectly adequate, especially if you are moving up from a point and shoot with only a center zone.

You can get the D40 with the 18-55 kit lens at B&H Photo available through Yahoo! Shopping or at 1-800-622-4987) for $525 (June 2007). Add a Lexar Platinum (60X speed) card for $25 or 2 GB for $35. Or - get the D40 with 18-135 lens and 1 GB Lexar card for $750. They also have used D40's from $475.

And yet... clearly these are both very good cameras. What it all comes down to is which one YOU feel better about. Go to a camera shop and pick them up and see.

Canon EOS 450D Digital Rebel XSi or D5000 for a beginner photographer?

Answer
Canon EOS Rebel T1i 15.1 MP CMOS Digital SLR Camera
http://astore.amazon.com/webfront-20/detail/B001XURPQS

The Journey Continues. Canon's new EOS Rebel T1i is packed with features, both refined and new. In addition to its admirable performance with an all-new 15.1 Megapixel Canon CMOS sensor, DIGIC 4 Image Processor, a 3.0-inch Clear View LCD with anti-reflective and scratch-resistant coating, and compatibility with the EOS System of lenses and Speedlites, the EOS Rebel T1i adds remarkable Full HD video capture at resolutions up to 1920 x 1080. An HDMI port allows for quick connections to high definition TVs and monitors for easy viewing of your stills and video. The entire operation is simple and easy even if you are a beginner. You'll have uncompromised EOS Digital performance with power and flexibility right in the palm of your hand.

Review: I've had the T1i for about almost week now and after some extensive use, here are my thoughts:

1. 15.1 megapixel sensor. Yes, the high megapixel count is impressive, but keep in mind that, as you approach higher resolutions, you need to ensure the lens on the SLR can resolve that much detail. Sadly, the included 18-55mm IS lens is functional, but the high resolution really shows the so-so quality of the lens. Even if taken at the proper focus, pictures can appear soft with this kit lens. Shots I have taken with Canon EF-S 17-85mm and EF 70-200mm L lenses are crisp. I don't have any gripes on image quality. There are some issues with noise on the higher ISOs that don't seem to show up on the Nikon digitals, but overall, the quality is amazing for the price. Skin tones, textures, colors are reproduced very accurately.

2. Digic 4. The Digic 4 processor appears to process/save the 15 megapixel images in the same time (if not faster) than the Digic III processor on the XSi (even in RAW+Jpg mode). I have also noticed that at higher ISOs, the sensor and the Digic 4 produce images with less overall noise compared with its predecessors.

3. LCD. The 920,000 pixel LCD screen is large (3"), crisp, vibrant and fully visible even in bright sunlight. In comparison, the Canon XSi SLR (which the T1i replaces), also has a 3" LCD, but with 230,000 pixels. The viewing angle is great as well and the LCD can easily be seen nearly 180 degrees around.

5. Penta-mirror. That Canon is still using one in the T1i is disappointing. The penta-mirror viewfinder image is functional, but still noticeably darker than that of the penta-prism viewfinder in the Nikon D90 (which is the T1i's main competitor). I really would have preferred if Canon had kept the XSi's 12.2 megapixel sensor, forgone 1080p video altogether, and maybe upped the cost of the camera slightly to cover the production cost of using a penta-prism in the T1i. Honestly, unless you are massively cropping your images, or creating large photos, the difference between 12.2 and 15.1 megapixels really is negligible.

6. Size. This is the same body as the XSi, and therefore a bit on the smaller side compared to other digital SLRs. I have small hands, so the T1i is comfortable for me. If you have big hands, I can see this being a very difficult camera to use over an extended period of time. If you haven't handled a Canon XT, XTi or XSi, I would suggest you go to a store and hold the T1i yourself before purchasing it online. (I will upload a picture of the T1i in my hands to the user gallery for a size reference.)

7. HD Video. Yes, the Canon marketing department made a horrible marketing decision and pushed the T1i onto shelves limiting the 1080p recording to 20fps (frames per second). Recognize this as a marketing gimmick that allows them put a 1080p sticker on the camera box. The 1080p @ 20fps is fine most times, but seems a choppy if you have a lot of action in the frame or are panning quickly. The T1i's 720p video is recorded at 30fps and is clean, smooth, and sufficient for all but the most discerning consumers. One major criticism though is that the sound is recorded in mono, AND there is NO input for an external microphone.

Ultimately, you shouldn't let the HD recording limitations sway you one way or the other. This is an SLR camera -- not a video camera. The HD video is a great feature, but if you're looking for something primarily to take video, look elsewhere. There are much better, cheaper VIDEO cameras out there which can record true 1080p.

How to take night wildlife photography? I have a regular Canon digital camera?

.*`

what settings should i put it on- when i take the pics of animals in my yard around 3 am

Answer
You're going to have to experiment with the long shutter times. Try some shots of bushes and see if you can get them to come out. The problem is, you don't want to set the ISO higher than maybe 400, or the image will be pretty rough. At ISO 400, you will need something like a 10 second exposure, unless it is an amazingly bright moon, and it is doubtful that any animals will hold still for that long. You also MUST have a tripod for those long exposure times.

To get to the long exposure in most "regular" Canon digital cameras, do this:

1. Press the FUNC button
2. Use the up/down arrows to select the exposure compensation icon (+/- in front of a zero)
3. Press the MENU button
4. Use the left/right arrows to increase or decrease the time.
(You should be able to set from 1 second to 15 seconds this way. It will look like 1", 2", 3" and so on.)
5. Press the FUNC button to save your setting.

Once you set something like 10 seconds, take a picture of a bush and see if the exposure is bright enough. If it's too bright, reduce the time. If it's not bright enough, I think you can choose 13 seconds or 15 seconds. If it's still not bright enough, go ahead and increase the ISO until you get a useful image and deal with the noise later.

What is the best digital camera for wildlife photography?

Dana M

I am a wildlife conservation major and I am going to have to take a lot of photos for my research. I might need a larger zoom to get closer detail of the ecosystem or the animal. Some of them can be very illusive!!! I also live in the United States so if the price were to be in that currency it would be a big help. I am willing to pay up to about $800.00.

Answer
The "best" digital camera for wildlife photography and "$800" do not belong in the same question. I'm sorry.

You are looking for "adequate for the student's budget," which will not be the best.

Unfortunately, the lens that you need will blow your budget without even getting you a camera to use it with.

I'd say that you need a minimum of 300 mm at the tele end of the zoom and 400 mm is even better to keep your body out of the animals' habitat and out of harm's way.

I'll kick myself in the morning, but you might get more bang for the buck out of Canon equipment than Nikon, even though I would choose the Nikon for myself.

Check this page for some lens ideas.

http://www.the-digital-picture.com/Canon-Lenses/Canon-Wildlife-Lens.aspx

Look at the focal lengths recommended. Read the opening thoughts. "Wildlife photography usually needs as much focal length as you can bring along or afford."

The cheapest lens on this list costs $580 at B&H. It's the 70-200 f/4.0 lens. http://www.the-digital-picture.com/Reviews/Canon-EF-70-200mm-f-4.0-L-USM-Lens-Review.aspx

If you were putting this in front of a decent 10 MP sensor, you MIGHT get by with serious photos of wildlife, as you will be able to crop somewhat without losing too much detail. This means that you'd be looking at a Rebel XTi (EOS 400D) for $675. Add a memory card and the lens for a total of $1,300.

You could do okay with an 8 MP Rebel XT (EOS 350D) for $510. The total outfit would cost $1,135.

It's not an "L" lens, but you could swap out the 70-200 for the Canon Zoom Telephoto EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS Image Stabilizer USM Autofocus Lens and get "IS" plus 300 mm for $550, dropping both outfit costs by $30.

In the Nikon world, I'd look at the D40X - mostly for price. The body is $730; memory card is $45; and the Nikon Zoom Telephoto AF Zoom-Nikkor 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6G IF-ED AF-S VR Autofocus Lens for $480. This lens is on my wish list. The "VR" is for real and will help add some speed in lower light situations. The total for this outfit is $1,255, so it's about the same as the Canon 10 MP outfit I put together above. The Nikon adds a spot meter, though, which could be very helpful for long-distance metering of animals.

In fact, this last setup is my recommendation as far as bang for the buck, mostly because you get that spot meter with the NIkon.

Experience with the Canon PowerShot SD1200IS digital camera?

Tory Z

Alright, so I've been saving up for a digital camera which I've wanted for a while, and finally the camera that I have been interested in is on sale in Best Buy (Canada) for $248 including tax-which isn't a bad deal looking at the fact it would be nearly $270 original price.
So before I buy the camera, I'd like to know if anyone has had good/bad experiences with the camera and if it's worth getting or not.
This is the camera:
http://www.bestbuy.ca/catalog/proddetail.asp?sku_id=0926INGFS10120688&login=undefined&langid=EN#

Thanks in advance!

Answer
It's a superior quality still as well as a video with sound digital camera. It's highly rated by Consumer Reports [see September 2009 issue]. When programmed (P) to "vivid" and 320X film format, you can obtain wonderful imagery especially when recording piano playing.

Good luck!

Best D-SLR and compact digital cameras?

Jamal

Hi

I am looking forward to buy a camera costing no more than £200. I have never used or bought D-SLR camera before so I am wondering if I should consider that?? Is there a huge difference between them two? Can I get a good D-SLR with a good lense for £200 or I should just buy a good compact digital?

Any help will be appreciated.
By doing a bit of research myself I found these 2 cameras within my price range:

Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ35
Canon PowerShot SX20IS

Which one of these do you think is better considering im using D-SLR for first time? Do you think I can find a compact cameras to compete these two for a better price??

Answer
The debate between buying a DSLR and a compact or "bridge" digital camera comes down to two things: 1) Sensor size and, 2) The ability to change lenses to suit the conditions.

The DSLR wins both points.

Lets look at two representative cameras, the Sony A230 DSLR and the Canon G11 "bridge" camera. Both cameras have 10mp.

The A230 sensor measures 23.6mm x 15.8mm (373mm squared) while the sensor in the G11 measures 7.6mm x 5.7mm (43mm squared). With a sensor that is 8.7 times larger, the individual pixels of the A230 are vey big compared to the pixels of the G11. A bigger pixel can gather more data, making for a smoother image file and the ability to make larger prints. Larger pixels also perform better in low light situations and at higher ISO settings.

The G11 has a permanently attached lens with a maximum aperture of f2.8 at the wide setting (6.1mm, 28mm equivalent) and f4.5 at the telephoto setting (30.5mm, 140mm equivalent). When shooting outdoors, or indoors using the flash, this lens is sufficient. If, however, you want to shoot indoors without the flash then it becomes a problem. Your only option is to use a high ISO (800 and above) and then use an editing program in post-processing to "clean up" the resultant digital noise that results from using a high ISO with a camera like the G11.

The A230 gives you the option of changing lenses to suit the conditions you're shooting under. Want to shoot in low light without the flash and keep the ISO lower? Just switch to a 50mm f1.4 lens. Unsure as to what this means? Look at this hypothetical chart.

ISO 800
f1.4 @ 1/125 sec.
f2 @ 1/60 sec.
f2.8 @ 1/30 sec. (G11 at 6.1mm/28mm)
f4 @ 1/15 sec.
f4.5 @ 1/10 sec. (G11 at 30.5mm/140mm)

An f1.4 lens is 2 stops faster than an f2.8 lens so to get the same shutter speed with the G11 as the f1.4 lens our ISO would have to be 3200 (ISO 3200 is 2 stops faster than ISO 800). To maintain the same shutter speed with the G11 as we zoom out to 30.5mm and our f-stop drops to f4.5 we'd need an ISO slightly higher than 6400.

Unfortunately, unless you stumble upon a really good sale, you'll need to increase your budget. The A230 and G11 are selling in the States for about $500.00 and with the 1.66 currency conversion factor you're about 100 pounds under-funded.

In my opinion, if you're serious about photography, the DSLR is the only viable option.

****** EDIT ******

Although I sympathize with your budget restrictions, the two cameras you refer to are NOT DSLR cameras. They are "bridge" cameras just like the Canon G11. Both cameras have an even smaller sensor with an additional 2,000,000 pixels stuffed into a smaller space. This will only worsen the low light, high ISO performance.

It is your money to spend as you wish but in my opinion you'd be wise to save a little more and go with a DSLR.

Canon Digital?

BangkokBob

I have never owned a digital camera, and would like to buy a Canon Digital. I only need it for taking photos so I can put on my computer. I am not a professional so to speak and maybe 5, 6 pixels if ok with me. Can someone recommend a model number and what it might cost ? Thanks

Answer
There are a couple of ways to go. The small and compact way is to get the SD1000, which has replaced the SD600 that someone else recommended. It's a good camera and it sells for about $210, plus another $20-30 for the required memory card.

Canon SD1000 (IXUS 70): http://www.steves-digicams.com/2007_reviews/sd1000.html
- Also: http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/specs/Canon/canon_sd1000.asp Go there and click on "Read Owner Opinions."

The slightly cheaper way to go is the Canon Powershot A560. It costs $170 at B&H and You can use the rest of your budget to buy a decent memory card.

Go here and read an extensive review:

Canon A560: http://www.steves-digicams.com/2007_reviews/a560.html

Check the sample images, too.

If you want to save ten bucks, check for the A550:

A550 review: http://www.steves-digicams.com/2007_reviews/a550.html

I see no reason not to go another ten bucks for the A560, though. You gain one stop in ISO, it is a little faster in continuous mode and the LCD is 2.5" instead of 2".

You will need to add a memory card and I suggest the Sandisk or Lexar brand in any speed. You will spend from about $20 for a 512 KB card, which is perfectly adequate, to about $40 for a Sandisk Ultra II, which is as good as you'd ever want for this or many other cameras.

My brother has the A540 and my mother-in-law has the A530 - on my recommendation - and neither one has stopped speaking to me yet. These are the models that were replaced by the A550 and A560.

If you can go over the $200 mark, look into the A570-IS, which looks like a really nice camera. The camera and card will run you about $230-240 at B&H.

What can I use to charge my videocam/digital camera/laptop in the Philippines?

kitkat

I'm traveling next week to the Philippines and I'm bringing my Sony DCR-SR42 handycam, Canon Powershot G6 camera and my laptop. I need to know what charger/power adapter to buy. Thanks!

Answer
Check the label on your power adapter. If it says 120 - 240v, then you should be good. Most wall outlets in the Philippines produce 240v and will blow the fuse or the whole device if it is not rated to support this capacity.

If your adapters do not support 240v, then you'll need a step-down transformer that allows you to plug it into a 240v outlet and produces 120v output. If you can't find one local to your area, you will find more availability in the Philippines.

If you need to charge multiple devices at once, you'll need to also bring or buy a power strip bar. Don't plug these directly into a 240v wall outlet unless it is rated to work for such capacity.

Unlike the typical plug interface in the U.S. with 2 parallel bars, some 240v outlets in the Philippines require a plug interface with 2 parallel round holes. Go to your local radio shack or equivalent to buy these accessories.

Good luck!

driver for canon digital camera for Mac IBook with OS9?

VINM

hello,
I was wondering if its possible to find a driver for canon Ixus60 digital camera that would be compatible with Mac IBook runing on OS9?

thanks a lot!

Answer
Check the Canon website (I believe it is http://www.usacanon.com). If that driver is available it will be there. A better alternative would be to purchase a card reader for the card your Canon uses that fits your IBook and download directly using that instead of from the camera.

Problem installing Canon PowerShot S30?

Kevin A

I have a Canon PowerShot S30 digital camera I'm trying to use on my Windows 7 64 bit machine. I've installed the latest ZoomBrowser EX 6.5.1 (which is compatible with Win 7). I hook up my camera to the USB drive and I can't get it to work. Windows will not recognize it and it's unable to find any drivers, even tho I installed the software. I've tried going into the Control Panel and update the drivers that way but it only says "Windows could not find driver software for your device."

Answer
The Powershot S30 is a very old camera, released in 2001, so that's probably why you are having problems.

The easiest solution for you...would be to use your CF memory card with a compatible USB card reader.
There is absolutely no software required.
Simply insert the memory card in the reader, then plug both into the computer's USB port...your computer will see it as a removable drive/device (look in 'Computer' on your desktop).
Then just copy the files over to your hard drive.
This method of file transferral is what many photographers already use to transfer files over to the computer. It requires no software, saves draining your camera's battery and is also faster.

p.s. I suggest you might want to think about upgrading your ageing 3MP camera sometime...

good luck
