Answer
Hey,

Canon and Nikon are the best. Don't be too -which brand- person, because it depends on the specific camera model mostly.

For your first time, 1000$ and below is a good limit. I recommend Canon EOS XSi, T1i, T2i and Nikon D3100, D5000 and D90.

Out of those, I'd get the T2i or D3100.

Here's a post caled ''Buying a DSLR, what's important, megapixels, features, brand, price, quality and which one to buy - http://www.the-dslr-photographer.com/2009/03/which-dslr-to-buy.html

Here's a review of the T2i: http://www.the-dslr-photographer.com/2010/06/canon-eos-550dt2i-dslr-review.html

Good luck! The site has many more tutorials, tips, reviews and guides!

Answer
Your photos look like they came from a point and shoot camera because you are using auto settings...like a point and shoot camera.

Buying a more expensive camera or more lenses does not give you better photos. Using a camera better gives you better photos. You need to learn how to use your DSLR like a DSLR...on full manual mode.

The most important accessory for a person moving from a point and shoot to a DSLR is a good book that explains how to use ISO, aperture, and shutter speed in manual mode. All advanced amateurs and professionals use their DSLR cameras in full manual mode as it gives them the ultimate creative control over their photos. A book that many people recommend is called "Understanding Exposure." This book is cheap, short, and easy to read. Please learn how to use your DSLR in manual mode. Otherwise you are no better than those other fools who spend hundreds or thousands on a DSLR and then use it like a $50 point and shoot. If you use ANY camera on auto mode like a point and shoot, your photos will always look like they came from a point and shoot.

Finally, to get better at photoshop, you have two choices: Read a bunch of books and experiment, or take some classes. It is a VERY complicated program, and no one is going to sit here and give you lessons.

Inexpensive Beginner D-SLR?

H.C

I am in high school and have enrolled in the Digital Photography course for an elective for the upcoming 2009-2010 school year. It is required that we buy our own D-SLR cameras. There are no specifications in the requirements but seeing as I am in high school, I have a low budget, preferably under $500. D you know what cameras would be suitable for me, and or where I could purchase it? Thank you so much!

Also I like taking portraits, macro pictures, and outdoor pictures...Im not sure if that was relevant but I thought it would be. =]
also i have a mac at home and pc at school so the camera must be compatible with both.

Answer
I recommend to anyone seriously contemplating the purchase of a new digital SLR camera to consider these two primary questions:
1. How much money do you have to spend???? $500.? $800.? $1,500.?
2. What level of photography do you aspire to "progress to" in the coming years ? (i.e. basic beginner, intermediate, or professional/business use).
For most beginners to intermediates I usually suggest one of these two manufacturers: Canon vs Nikon

1. Canon EOS Rebel model XSi. (Also known as the Canon 450D in Britain) The "kit" package comes with an 18-55mm zoom lens. The camera has pop-up flash, 12.2 Megapixels, and shutter speeds up to 1/4000th, 100-1,600 ISO sensitivity, 7 auto exposure Scene modes, PLUS Shutter Priority, Aperture Priority and Programmed Exposure Modes and Manual. It also has a 3 inch LCD screen, 3.5 frames continuous per second max., 9 point AF system, Live View Functioning and the ability to record photos in 3, 6 or 12 Megapixels PLUS numerous other great features found only on more expensive cameras. Wal-Mart is also selling them now for about $799. Sam's Club also has them for $729. I also think that Amazon dot com has them for around $650. Hereâs some more info about this FANTASTIC camera: http://www.imaging-resource.com/PRODS/XSI/XSIA.HTM#

I bought one of these 6 months ago and use it as my "back up" camera. I absolutely love it. I have gotten some fantastic photos with it and cannot praise it enough. I routinely enlarge my photos to make 8x10's and 11x14 size enlargements with no noticeable distortion or loss of detail in the pictures.
Another excellent choice from Canon includes the Rebel XS (also known as the EOS 1000D) which is a 10 megapixel camera which comes with the 18-55mm lens. It sells for around $550-600. US Dollars. http://www.imaging-resource.com/PRODS/XS/XSA.HTM

2. Nikon D-90: If you prefer to use Nikon equipment I strongly recommend the Nikon D-90 which has 12.3 Megapixels, 3 inch monitor with Live View, 200-3,200 ISO sensitivity, 11 point AF system with Face Priority, 4.5 frames per second in continuous mode, 5 advanced Scene modes for auto exposure plus Shutter Priority, Aperture Priority, Programmed Auto plus Manual. The D-90 sells for around $900-950. (Body ONLY. The 18-55mm lens cost an additional $150.-175.) Typically, Nikon equipment is slightly more expensive than Canon equipment, but (having owned both Nikon and Canon cameras), I have seldom noticed BETTER quality results using Nikon equipment. Hereâs some more info about this Nikon: http://www.imaging-resource.com/PRODS/D90/D90A.HTM
Another great choice is the 10.2 megapixel Nikon D-60 kit ($649) which also comes with the 18-55mm lens. All of these Nikon's can be found at Best Buy or Amazon dot com for a very low price. To learn more about this Nikon check this site out: http://www.imaging-resource.com/PRODS/ND60/ND60A.HTM

If you are convinced that Nikon is the way to go, but donât have as much money to spend, there are several other models to consider. You might prefer the 6.1 megapixel Nikon D-40 ($499) kit that comes with the 18-55mm lens. To learn more this Nikon camera check this site out: http://www.imaging-resource.com/PRODS/ND40/ND40A.HTM

These selections are probably the best choices for any beginner to intermediate skill level, offering the most lenses and other accessories, dealers and places to purchase.

I strongly recommend that ALL beginners buy a good book on digital photography AND take a class or two from a Vocational school or Community Education Center in your area.
You can learn more about the technical specifications of each of these two cameras at these websites:

Answer
Get a Canon SX120. It's pretty cheap, and it's the best option you can want for an affordable, everyday-use, compact camera which shoots pretty pictures. My friend has this camera, and her pictures are really nice, here's a few examples. ;) http://2.bp.blogspot.com/__LvSp59UEgU/TOucGDOcTdI/AAAAAAAAEV0/FiPGpH3YEPI/s1600/6.JPG, http://2.bp.blogspot.com/__LvSp59UEgU/TN5A6WwYMbI/AAAAAAAAERs/wlWRa9IlUeM/s1600/12.jpg,

It's a great camera ;)
PLUS it's only about $229.90. A price like that can't go wrong ;)

Here's the Canon site for it. http://www.usa.canon.com/cusa/consumer/products/cameras/digital_cameras/powershot_sx120_is

If you're looking for a really affordably DSLR, try a Nikon D30000. You can actually get it really cheap, and the pictures are the same as about any other DSLR, amazing quality. Here's a sample photo. http://www.nikonmexico.com/en_INC/IMG/Assets/Digital-SLR/2010/25462-Nikon-D3000/Photography/25462_D3000_ER10.jpg I have a Nikon too, and here's my picture https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhwaafumDlMUjRu7ksIvDLrGcsKuZsLY1H4n-N-OYuRNUGp3e3wrVP3-86S_T8ieLeJ07dyHY-7cQ2ajtWNemWEuPZSsQkz5vZmv91hyTxBTHwmE9h8vSsN7RH_sizysIpBDvnc9mtbqtc/s640/%25233.jpg ;) Have fun!

I'm looking to find a digital SLR camera?

Tim K

I'm stuck between Nikon and Canon. They seem to be the major brands for this type of product. I've researched them and they both seem to have good quality. Help me choose a brand. My price range is from $1000-$1600.

Answer
Hey,

Your price range is excellent!

I recommend Canon EOS T2i, 60D, 7D and Nikon D3100, D90, D7000.

All have same, excellent, image quality and 99% same high ISO performance (which is very good too). D3100 and D7000 have AF while recording videos, but all 3 Canon models have more frame rates. The 60D has an articulating screen, it's the only one. 7D is fastest with 8fps, then is D7000 with 6fps and 60D with 5.3.

Which camera is better?

Q. The Nikon Coolpix S8100- $275 http://latestpriceindia.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/11/nikon_COOLPIX_S8100.jpg

Nikon Coolpix l110- $200 http://www.itechnews.net/wp-content/uploads/2010/02/Nikon-CoolPix-L110-15x-zoom-camera-black.jpg

In your opinion, which is better? I am 13 and I'm interested in photography but am a beginner. I do have a SLR that my parents have that I can sometimes use, but I'm looking for something more compact. I'm leaning towards the S8100 because it's smaller and has some better features and doesn't need it's batteries replaced (plugs into wall) but I do like the style of the l110 and it has better zoom. I'm looking for a camera with great zoom because i go to lots of concerts and my current camera has terrible zoom so all the pictures I take end up looking crappy. I really like the l110 but maybe it's too bulky? Which one would you choose?

Answer
Canon PowerShot SD1300 IS 12.1 MP Digital Camera

- 28mm wide-angle lens; 4x optical zoom and Optical Image Stabilizer
- Smart AUTO mode intelligently selects from 18 predefined settings
- 12.1-megapixel resolution allows you to print large size images with clarity and detail
- Clear 2.7-inch PureColor System LCD

Answer
Hey,

Your budget is..? More or less than 500$?

Here are the models I recommend:
- Canon EOS XS
- Canon EOS XSi
- Canon EOS T2i
- Nikon D3000
- Nikon D5000
- Nikon D90

The T2i, D5000 and D90 have video recording.

Here's a post called 'Buying a DSLR, what's important, megapixels, features, quality, brand, price and which models from 400$+ are good (amazon links too). Here - http://the-digital-photographer.blogspot.com/2010/02/buying-sdhc-memory-card.html

How does the original Canon EOS compare to the Canon Rebel T2i?

I have an original Canon EOS from the early 90's and I'm looking to upgrade to my first digital SLR camera. Besides the obvious difference of digital vs film, are these cameras functionally similar? The old EOS has your basic manual functions and some "modes" as well as an auto mode. Can I expect similar functionality from the T2i?

Answer
Hey,

Buying a T2i for your first DSLR would be the best option right now. Its much better than any other DSLR from competition at same price.

It has an Auto mode, though I recommend you to slowly start with Manual mode. It has manual focus (all lenses).

It's like your old SLR, but with an LCD, less noise than all of those films, great video and other stuff.

Here's a review of the T2i: http://www.the-dslr-photographer.com/2010/06/canon-eos-550dt2i-dslr-review.html

What camera is the best for my money?

sdfghjkl;

I am looking at the cannon rebel and the nikon d40, but I am not really set on anything. Can you let me know what camera I can get that will be the best quality for my money? Please include the price and a link to the camera. Thanks so much.

Answer
The Nikon D40 has been discontinued and replaced by the Nikon D3000. The Canon XS is almost 3 yrs. old and behind in technology.

I suggest looking at the Pentax K-x which was chosen by the Technical Image Press Association as their 2010 "Best DSLR Entry Level". The K-x has these features:

1) A CMOS sensor which gives superior performance at high ISO settings.

2) Live View.

3) HD Video.

4) Double/multiple exposure capability of from 2 to 9 images on a single frame with Auto EV Compensation. This feature opens a whole new world of creativity to you.

5) A focusing motor in the camera body so any Pentax AF lens made since 1988 can be used on the K-x and will auto focus as it should.

6) Image Stabilization in the camera body so any lens used becomes an IS lens.

7) A choice of camera body colors so you don't have to settle for a black camera unless you want to.
http://www.pentaximaging.com/slr

Here is a hands-on review of the Pentax K-x:
http://www.shutterbug.net/equipmentreviews/amateur_digital_slrs/0510pentax/index.html

The Nikon D3000 has NONE of the features of the Pentax K-x. NONE.

Here are the current prices with an 18-55mm zoom lens from B&H:

Pentax K-x, $489.95

Nikon D3000, $499.95 after a $50.00 Instant Savings from B&H. Ends 01-08-2011.

Canon XS, $499.95 after a $50.00 Instant Savings from B&H. Ends 01-08-2011.

B&H: http://www.bhphotovideo.com

So you can pay $10.00 MORE for a lesser camera like the Canon XS or Nikon D3000 or you can save $10.00 and get all the features of the K-x.

If the Pentax K-x isn't the best value available then I've no idea what a best value is.

I am a photography freak but dont have much budget to buy a new DSLR. Can some one please suggest me a website or something where I can have a DSLR for free? For location preferences, I live in India.

Answer
Hi King..

There are many contests which offer SLR Camera as prizes.. You need to keep searching for them and might hit the jackpot!

The one that is going on now is from Nikon (Nikon Photo Contest International 2010-2011). They are offering different cameras ranging from Nikon D3S digital-SLR camera (costing Rs 2.9 lac) to D5000 (Rs 50K). There are 53 cameras to be won and just not that, you will have Lenses, Speedlight and other accessories along with this. Indians are open to participate.

Link: http://www.nikon.com/about/news/2010/0630_npci2010_01.htm

Some tips to win:
# Do check the previous years winners list and you can get an idea of the kind of photos that get selected for finals
# Comply strictly by the rules (format, image size, categories etc.)
# Check the list of judges, google their name and go to their websites, see what kind of photos they like to shoot..

Do keep in mind.. if you are opting to win a prize, don't go by the notion of what photo of yours you like most.. but see and enter only those photos which may win you a camera.

Last year, a young boy from Mumbai won a high end DSLR from Canon in a street photography contest. He didn't even own a camera, he had hired one for a day from a local store for the contest.. took pictures, submitted them and he became a Lucky winner!! The article about him came in Better Photography Magazine.

So, there's all hope!!

All the best!!

EDIT: Here's one contest for Canon EOS 7D digital SLR camera to be won. Follow the link for details:

Will the CANON EOS KISS X4 work without complications in the UK?

I have found this camera online for a mere £330 which is around £200 cheaper than the 500D version. My question is if I buy the japanese version will I have any complications with things like memory card and lens compatibility and also menus, power and video format? Should this camera be fine to use and have no notable issues apart from needing a universal adapter to charge the battery?

Thanks

The Canon EOS 550D is an 18.0 megapixel digital single-lens reflex camera, announced by Canon on
