DSLR or SLR that come with external mic jack ?

canon digital camera 40x zoom image

MMM

I'm looking for a camera that has good audio system and extremely good autofocus.

I don't mind buying a seperate mic jack, but it would be better if i find one that comes with the camera.

I want to buy a Nikon, Canon or Sony. So it would be great if you can tell me if any of these brands have a camera with external mic jack.

Answer
Why don't you check out the JVC GRH-D1 High Definition MiniDV Camcorder w/10x Optical Zoom. Its a really good camcorder, the brand is reliable and has the mic jac that you want.
Features include:

Digital HDV camcorder that records standard DV and 1280x720p MPEG 2 HD 16:9
1/3-inch progressive CCD with 1.18-megapixel still resolution
3.5-inch LCD screen with 0.44-inch color viewfinder
10x optical zoom with SD/DV 40x and 200x digital zoom
IEEE 1394 iLink, USB, and component video interface

You can see the mic jack in the pics given here:

Long Zoom Camera That Uses AA Batteries?

PETER G

I am looking for a digital camera with a long zoom lens-40x or more-that takes AA batteries. So far I have found the Fujifilm S8200 at 40x, the S8300 at 42x (but hard to find in stores), and the S8500 at 50x (Europe only apparently). Does anyone know of any other make and model that an top these (doesn't have to be Fujifilm)?

Answer
Nikon and Canon both make several models that take AA batteries.

I can do all the settings, but can not get any photos to still be on the camera, after I turn the control, to view the photos I've taken.

Answer
It is rare but there has been a problem with this model.
The CCD sub contractor may have made an error. Canon is working with folks to fix this. I'll try to send you the link.
If not there web site has a pretty good troubleshooting section.

U.S. residents are kindly directed to contact the Canon Customer Support Center for further assistance at 1-800-828-4040. Support hours are Monday thru Friday - 8:00 AM to 12:00 midnight; and Saturday 10:00 AM to 8:00 PM (all times EST). Alternatively, if electronic support is preferred, please send your email to carecenter@cits.canon.com

kinya

it is a Canon PC 1130..also it makes noises when it hangs and gives a blank screen only showing E18 At the bottom of the page..what does this mean?please help

Answer
Canon E18 code means that it's experiencing what's called a "lens error". There are several causes for this explained in the following links.

Here are some troubleshooting steps that you can try that may (or may not) correct your problem. They only seem to work for less than 40% of the lens errors, but if the camera is out of warranty (or repair cost approaches that of the camera), they're worth that try. Some of the later steps do involve some risk to the camera, so carefully weigh your options before deciding to conduct them:

canon digital camera in canada image

miaa

I want it to have really good quality for pictures, I don't really care much about videos.

Also if you could could you list about how much it would cost me?
I live in canada.

Answer
The main thing for quality is MP (Mega pixels).

The higher the mega pixels, the higher the image quality.

Go to a Best Buy or Future Shop and look for the highest mega pixel camera. 10-12 mega pixel is really good, anything above that is like professional grade. The cameras with the large, long lens, are made for professional photography (you can find a 12 MP camera without the large lens).

Next thing, make sure it's a brand you trust. Don't get a brand that you think will break down easily.

Brands I suggest:
-Sony (best, in my opinion)
-Kodak (this company has a profession in photography)
-Canon (sort of a "lower-grade" Sony)
-Samsung (has many, MANY great reliable products)
-Nikon (great overall)
-Casio (to a certain extent)

Next is price. Make sure you look to see you're getting the best deal for what you need. If you have a choice, say between a Sony 12 MP camera for $200, and a Casio 12 MP camera for $100, don't just straight up get the Sony because it's more expensive. Make sure you like it, and it's a REAL need to spend that extra $100. If the Casio works for you, then get it and save $100. Be smart...

What is the best kind of camera to buy- especially for a photographer?

I'm kinda lost here.. I want to be a photographer.. like take pictures of scenery and of life and all that.. but there are just way too many cameras to choose from.. so does anyone know an extremely good camera that's also very affordable at the same time.. thanks. i would totally appreciate it
Well, i want to be a photographer just for fun! i don't want to make a career out of it- no way.. but i want to make it a hobby.. i don't really want to go to classes for it.. i just want a suitable camera.. i mean, i have had experience with film and photography... but i want to do something more personal for myself.
thanks for your answers i appreciate them.. but i don't know much about cameras to begin with.. that's why i'm asking.. like i'm not sure what's the best type to get.. okay, i'm someone who just wants to go out and take a pic.. like always have a camera on me.. like those portable ones, you know? but my pockets don't run deep... soo.. i don't have enough money either.. well, if you have any further suggestions please suggest them to me.. help a sister out

Answer
I agree with the suggestions that you should consider a larger camera, such as an SLR design. There are also many mid-level EVF (electronic view finder) design cameras that are excellent and may be just the thing for some one like yourself who wants a serious camera - but not too serious!

Consider the links below to Popular Photography magazine. One is their list of "digital super-zoom" cameras; all-in-one designs with excellent picture quality, advanced features and powerful lenses.

The Editor's Choice is for the Olympus SP-550-UZ.

If you like the idea of an SLR design with the ability to change lenses, there are many choices. The entry-level Nikon D40, D40x and Canon Rebel XT are good choices to consider. Sony, Pentax and Olympus should also be on your list of brands to check out.

Do you have any friends with SLR cameras? If they have a collection of lenses you could borrow from, that would be a great way to start!

i have bought cannos sd 630 . But i know there is latest model of canon digital camera in the market . So i want to know what can i do with my cannos sd 630 and what can't i do ?

Answer
The Canon SD 630 is a very good compact camera.
I don't think you should worry about the other models for now. I would wait till next year to see what is coming out.
They are...
SD800 IS, 7.1 MP, 3.7x optical
SD900, 10MP, 3x optical
A630, 8MP, 4x optical but larger in size
The two SD models just have more megapixels and the newer processor.
And the SD630 has the same excellent movie mode...and has a large 3.0" LCD.
Just make sure you use a fast SD card.

I have recently bought Canon A430 Digital camera. I want to know how I can use it for auto shoot for set time.

Suppose other cameras have 5 sec, 10 sec delay then we can shoot our picture by just keeping the camera ready.

Thanks for your answers!

Answer
Your camera has a 2 or 10 sec self-timer.

It has no interval timer ... those are found usually on the high-end DSLR cameras.

EBAY QUESTION! would you buy a $300 camera from a seller with 0 zero feedback?

canon s90 digital camera on Canon S90 Digital Camera
canon s90 digital camera image
Q. i am looking at a canon s90 digital camera and it is priced around $250-$300 dollars depending on what i bid. Can you tell me if you would buy something of that price from an ebay seller with zero 0 feeedback and has only been on ebay for a few days? Thanks in advance for your answers.

Answer
My answers is yes if they use paypal.
Keep in mind that ebay DOES favor buyers. Use an escrow like paypal and you should avoid getting ripped off.

We all had to start with 0 feedback. You as the buyer have the upper hand. Paypal will not release the funds to new seller until the buyer leaves positive feedback which means it is easy for the buyer to get a refund. Unfortunately, some buyers will scam the seller because it is so easy to get their money back and keep the item. But doing that will put up a red flag to sellers regarding that buyer and they may not sell to them.

Get the buyers phone number. Email them and ask for it, and maybe call them before you bid to see if they are real.
It does not bother me at all to receive a call from a potential buyer who wants to bid an item.

Just keep it honest.

Answer
You'd do better to put a Tamron 18-270 or 18-250 (not 18-200) lens on a small DSLR body like a Sony A37, or other brand of your choice to keep it affordable chose an earlier camera model. The lens can stay with you when you upgrade provided that you don't jump ship from the brand. They can all be used in auto mode just like a P&S only you can develop your skills at your own pace.

But look at the dinky little DSLR Canon recently put on the market:

What is a good camera for a beginning photographer? With a $50-$150 price range?

Jesse

I'm a college freshmen and photography is my life. I havent taken 1 photography class yet, but will in January 2013. I was looking for a good camera, not to cheap and not to expensive, because I don't like taking pictures with my iPod. Anyone have information, please comment below. thanks!

Answer
If by photography, you mean taking complete control of the camera, choosing the lens aperture, shutter speed and lens, then the camera that falls into your budget, would be a good used 35 mm SLR. You can find them on craigslist in a city near you for under $100. Nikon and Canon 35 mm SLR cameras are most plentiful and account for over 60% of all dSLR's sold.

With a budget of $50-$150, you cannot find any dSLR camera and digital P&S cameras start at $125.

Here is a link that might help you find a $125-$150

I bought my camera in 1991, its a canon eos 630, awesome camera, broke the smaller lens but the one i still have is 80-200mm zoom, I want to get a digital camera that will fit that lens in stead of buying all new ones. It is electric/manual focus. Does anyone know for sure. Thought about going some where and seeing if I can use a camera body and see if it fits.

Answer
If your lenses are EF or EF-S in the case of Canon yes they will work. I don't know if they'll auto focus for you but they'll fit.

How can I set the f/stop and shutter speed on my Canon Eos?

J-K

Using my Canon Eos XT digital camera, I'm trying to find a way to set my f/stop and shutter speed. When I set them using the manual settings, the camera will change the setting on the f/stop automatically by itself. How can I stop the camera from adjusting on its own?

Answer
Do you want to shoot totally manual? Turn the mode dial to "M" and use the command dial up front to change the shutter speed, then while holding down the exposure lock "*" button, turn the command dial again to adjust the aperture.

If you want to allow the camera to do some of the work, turn your mode dial to "Av" to shoot in aperture priority. This lets you set the aperture while the camera adjusts the shutter to get the correct exposure. You can also turn the mode dial to "Tv" to shoot in shutter priority where the camera figures out the correct aperture to match the shutter speed you've selected.

It sounds as if you've already played with the automatic modes and/or programmed exposure mode "P" where the camera makes it's own adjustments to get trhe correct exposure. In programmed exposure mode, you can still "shift" the exposure to a smaller or larger aperture as needed to control depth of field.

David is right and mentioned something I totally forgot. If you are shooting a zoom and the lens specs read something like f3.5-5.6, then your aperture will indeed change as to rack that zoom out to the long end of it's range. This would also occur on my EF 70-300mm f4-5.6 lens but, I almost always use that lens outdoors in good light and never shoot it with an aperture wider than f5.6 so I never run into that issue. And my primary lens is an EF-s 17-55 f2.8 IS. So the aperture is constant regardless of zoom setting and avoids the problem you are seeing.

What can I use to charge my videocam/digital camera/laptop in the Philippines?

kitkat

I'm traveling next week to the Philippines and I'm bringing my Sony DCR-SR42 handycam, Canon Powershot G6 camera and my laptop. I need to know what charger/power adapter to buy. Thanks!

Answer
Check the label on your power adapter. If it says 120 - 240v, then you should be good. Most wall outlets in the Philippines produce 240v and will blow the fuse or the whole device if it is not rated to support this capacity.

If your adapters do not support 240v, then you'll need a step-down transformer that allows you to plug it into a 240v outlet and produces 120v output. If you can't find one local to your area, you will find more availability in the Philippines.

If you need to charge multiple devices at once, you'll need to also bring or buy a power strip bar. Don't plug these directly into a 240v wall outlet unless it is rated to work for such capacity.

Unlike the typical plug interface in the U.S. with 2 parallel bars, some 240v outlets in the Philippines require a plug interface with 2 parallel round holes. Go to your local radio shack or equivalent to buy these accessories.

Good luck!

I have always been into photography i have had a 20mm Cannon for the last 16 years and it finally crapped out on me. I don't know much about digital but am wanting to get one. I am trying to stay around 700 dollars. I am currently looking at the "Canon EOS Rebel T3i 18MP Digital SLR Camera w/ EF-S 18-55mm IS II Lens Kit" but i don't know if that's the best i can get for my money.

Answer
The best is down to how a camera feels in your hands.

The Sony A-37 is better for video, and the Nikon D3100 and Pentax K-r are pretty much the same, so your best bet is to find a dealer, try them and buy the one you like.

Any one of the four is capable of stunning results if used properly.

What is the best/easiest to use digital camera?

Todd

I have a Canon EOS Rebel T3. It is a good camera but I was wondering if there is a better camera for use with instagram application? I live in Tokyo and walking all day with a bag to house such a big camera can be cumbersome and tiring so I usually leave it at home. Is there a smaller digital camera that might be a little smaller while still have great quality?

Answer
All cameras have a completely auto setting which makes them easy to use. The thing which gives your T3 such high quality pictures are the large sensor and the high quality lens. If you go too small then you will end up with a much smaller sensor, which will reduce picture quality.

You could look at something like the Sony RX-100, which is a fairly large compact camera with a reasonably large sensor, but which should be quite a lot smaller and lighter than your T3. That is getting very good reviews at the moment.

I'm not a professional photographer, but I know someone who is trying to learn about photography and considering a Canon Digital Rebel. We see the Rebel advertised slightly different from one place to the next, some saying it is 400D or EOS or XTi (sorry, not familiar with the terminology yet) and some as a combination of those terms. Are there different models of the camera or is there just really one model? Thanks for any suggestions.

Answer
Rebel XTi(Sold in America) is the same version as the EOS 400D(which is sold in Europe).

It has 10.1 Mega Pixels and is the updated version of the Rebel XT (EOS 350D).

Its an Excellent Camera to learn with. But I wouldn't recommend the Kit Lens that comes with it. Better to buy the body, and get a better lens separately.

How do I know which digital camera is perfect for taking pics.?

gabriela12

I am a model and I need to take some pics of me, which digital camera would you guys recommend.

Answer
It all depends... What kind of lighting will you be using? Will there be a lot of motion? The following website has great reviews for all types of digital camera: http://www.dpreview.com/

Without knowing too much about what you need, it's hard to say. But a great camera for pretty much anything is the Canon EOS 350D / Digital Rebel XT.

I am a photography freak but dont have much budget to buy a new DSLR. Can some one please suggest me a website or something where I can have a DSLR for free? For location preferences, I live in India.

Answer
Hi King..

There are many contests which offer SLR Camera as prizes.. You need to keep searching for them and might hit the jackpot!

The one that is going on now is from Nikon (Nikon Photo Contest International 2010-2011). They are offering different cameras ranging from Nikon D3S digital-SLR camera (costing Rs 2.9 lac) to D5000 (Rs 50K). There are 53 cameras to be won and just not that, you will have Lenses, Speedlight and other accessories along with this. Indians are open to participate.

Link: http://www.nikon.com/about/news/2010/0630_npci2010_01.htm

Some tips to win:
# Do check the previous years winners list and you can get an idea of the kind of photos that get selected for finals
# Comply strictly by the rules (format, image size, categories etc.)
# Check the list of judges, google their name and go to their websites, see what kind of photos they like to shoot..

Do keep in mind.. if you are opting to win a prize, don't go by the notion of what photo of yours you like most.. but see and enter only those photos which may win you a camera.

Last year, a young boy from Mumbai won a high end DSLR from Canon in a street photography contest. He didn't even own a camera, he had hired one for a day from a local store for the contest.. took pictures, submitted them and he became a Lucky winner!! The article about him came in Better Photography Magazine.

So, there's all hope!!

All the best!!

I thought all canon dslr would have video in them, and they would have basic features like taking picture while looking at digital display. Apparently there is plenty of unfinished stuff going on with these dslr cameras.
Also is there a list of canon dslr cameras based on price and usability? like from simplest to more capable?

All the current dSLR's have a video feature.

Look at the Canon 1100D or 600D

After you read this, you will see that just owning a camera with a video feature, will require a lot of accessories, adding to the cost of your "cheap" camera

What's a good digital SLR camera for under 700 dollars?

Lyra

I know that's a fairly low price ceiling but I've only recently started getting serious about photography and it would just be for my enjoyment. I'm hoping to find something user-friendly and/or easy to learn, versatile (I like hiking, cycling, and occasional dances in the rain so it needs to be sturdy enough for outdoor use), and not enormous. I know DSLRs aren't really tiny compared to point-and-shoots but are there some that're smaller than others in this price range? What should I look for in a new camera? Any pointers are greatly appreciated. :)

Answer
The two entry level dSLR cameras within your price range are the Nikon D3200 and Canon T3i/600D

Only you can determine which is best for you. To do that, you need to visit a proper camera shop to look and hold both cameras

Here is a link that shows you the differences in the size of a P&S sensor and an entry level dSLR

As you can see, there is a huge difference

I need some advices which one i should purchase because they both are really awesome, with sleek designs, and high megapixels

Answer
Go to the website dpreview.com where they give you great reviews on all digital cameras. They also give you user reviews which I found very helpful. I have the SD750 and think its a great little camera. Made in Japan, metal body, large scratch resistant screen, and a real long battery life along with great pictures are just some of the things I really like about this camera. No complaints.

What's the best compact digital camera for someone who's into photography?

So I'm after a compact digital camera as I'll be traveling soon. I'm into photography and at the minute I'm self teaching myself but hoping to do some courses in the future.
I want a compact camera which will also allow me change settings etc.
Any recommendations for a camera or particular brand to go with?
I have a canon at the moment however it's a bit too bulky for my travels.
thanks!

Answer
look for a point and shoot that enables you to change things like ISO, shutter and aperture. your pictures may not be as fantabulous (pre edited) as a dSLR, but if you can control at least 2 of those 3 things you should be able to take some great shots.

i have an oldschool 4.1mp sony with various lenses that can be used with it (not a dslr - it's more or less a point and shoot), with it i was able to take great shots. if you're serious about photography though, you really should shell out a little more money for at the very least an entry level digital SLR camera. they're a little more expensive, but you can do SOOO much more with them. Nikon d40 for instance, is a great entry level camera, it's not small but it's smaller than it's more expensive counterparts. http://www.deviantart.com <-- do a search for nikon d40 and you'll see the great shots you can get with it.

if you insist on a pocket sized point and shoot, you're going to generally give up flexibility and control, but that won't necessarily stop an artistically inclined photographer.

Best compact digital camera with multiple FPS?

I would like to find a compact digital camera that has excellent zoom and mega pixel quality but it should also take multiple frames per second. I normally like to buy Nikon or Canon cameras, but open to suggestions. Ideally under $300 and something able to buy through a normal retailer.

Answer
"Which one is a good camera to buy?" gets asked many times every single day here on YA.
A quick search would have given you thousands of instant replies (without having to wait for answers), but once again here is my 10 cents on the subject:

I don't really like to give recommendations for particular cameras because there are too many choices and too many variables in what people are looking for. I find it much more useful to help you think this over, then make up your own mind.

Point & Shoot cameras are wonderfully handy because of their small size.
When light conditions are ideal, they even take really nice photos - all of them do.

However, they all DO have limitations - they don't do very well in low light situations (i.e. noisy photos, hard to avoid blur, etc). The little onboard flash is very harsh at close range, and doesn't reach very far.
Many of them have no manual functions, so you are limited to only very basic photos, you can't compensate for unusual situations, or do many fun "tricks" and special effects.
P&S's also suffer from frustrating shutterlag and many of them chew through batteries rather quickly.

If you're ok with all those limitations, then go ahead and pick one, most of them (the same type and same price range) are rather similar. Personally I would pick either a Canon or a Nikon, and would certainly stay away from Kodak and Vivitar.

A higher end P&S will give you more manual options and better quality. Many of those even give you the option of adding a proper flash (which makes a big difference to your flash photos).

Don't worry too much about megapixels - all modern cameras have plenty enough, plus there is a limit to how many pixels you can squash into a tiny P&S sensor before you actually LOSE quality rather than gain it. 6 megapixels is about the upper limit for those little sensors.
Don't worry about digital zoom, in fact, don't EVER use it. It simply crops away pixels, i.e. destroys information. The only real zoom is optical.

Some people ask for a camera that "doesn't take blurry photos". Blur is the photographer's problem, NOT the camera's. Even the most expensive camera will take blurry photos if the person behind it doesn't know what they're doing.

Some words about special effect features such as color accent, or even just b/w or sepia:
About applying any sort of effect in camera: DON'T DO IT !
Imagine if you just happen to take the best photo you ever took - surely you would want to have it in all its glory, right?
Always set your camera to biggest size, best quality (and to color).
That way, you start with the best possible photo as your original.
Then you make a copy and edit it to your heart's content.
You have much better control over any editing on your computer, even something as simple as b&w will look MUCH better when it was processed properly instead of in camera.
You can do all sorts of things to it PLUS you get to keep your original.

Decide which features are important to you, and look for cameras that have that feature.
Then go compare a few models on www.dpreview.com .

The very best thing you can do for your success is to borrow some books and learn about photography. A bit of knowledge will make a much bigger difference to your photos than your choice of P&S camera can.

For what it's worth - if I was in the market for a P&S camera right now, my choice would be a Canon Powershot SX50 HS http://www.usa.canon.com/cusa/consumer/products/cameras/digital_cameras/powershot_sx50_hs

If tiny size is attractive and important in your opinion (but you still want a camera that gives you some decent options), I'd suggest looking at cameras like the Canon Powershot SX210IS or perhaps the Panasonic Lumix DMC-TZ10. However, do keep in mind that small cameras have tiny sensors and tiny lenses, so don't ever expect miracles from any of them.

The Sony SLT A55 should solve your problem. Sony's Translucent Mirror Technology allows for full-time continuous auto focus whether you're shooting still images or 1080 HD video. This technology also allows shooting at 10fps (frames per second). The SLT A55 features built-in GPS as well as 2D or 3D Sweep Panorama. Here are some reviews:

http://www.luminous-landscape.com/reviews/cameras/sony-a55-preview.shtml

At B&H - http://www.bhphotovideo.com - the Sony SLT is shown at $799.99 after a $50.00 Instant Savings from B&H. Offer ends 7-9-2011. Free USA shipping.

The Sony SLT A55 has a "little brother" - the SLT A33. It is shown at B&H for $699.99 with free USA shipping. This review explains the differences in the two models:

http://www.digitalphotographywriter.com/2010/08/sony-a33-vs-a55-whats-difference.html

In my opinion the Sony SLT A55 is worth the extra $100.00.
