I am in the market to purchase a new camera and equipment. I have an opportunity to put together photos for a look book and its been a while since I have done some photography. I just want to know what is the best DSLR camera to invest in for what I am looking to do. I am looking at Canon EOS Rebel T3i I am told its one of the best and then I am told by some that it is not good for what I am wanting to do. I was told that it would be best to invest in the Nikon D800 and some people are saying that there are digitals that give the same features for less. I was looking at a nikon D7000 and D4 complete kit. Please give input it would be greatly appreciated

Answer
Professionals need a robust camera when shooting day in and day out.

For this reason, the use cameras like Nikon's D3 series, D3, D800 or D3. If they have a Canon system, they use a 1Ds, Mark III, 1Dx, 5D, Mark III or 7D.

By the time you have the education and experience that would suggest you could go pro, you will have already established the brand of your camera system. This is why it is so important that you do a lot of independent research and not choose your camera based upon opinion

Look for professional reviews of the above camera on DP Review and DXOMark.com

Also visit the websites of those two brands to see the features, number and types of lenses as welll as accessories that are available for each camera model.

Finally visit a proper camera shop a few times as you narrow down your choices. Picking a camera system can take time because once you choose one, you will be married to it for decades, since whitching brands is just too expensive to make a mistake.

The D7100 and D4 would make a good pair at this time if you decide on Nikon. If you choose Canon, the 1Dx and 7D would be the choices for a pro.

The Canon T3i is an entry level dSLR and really cannot survive the riggers that a pro puts their camera through on a continuing basis.

If you are an advanced amateur and have used a Nikon or Canon 35 mm SLR in the past, the transition to either companies dSLR will be seamless

Remember, buying a couple of professional grade camera bodies is just the tip of the iceberg

Can the Canon EOS Rebel T3i Digital SLR record videos?

Niko

Does the Canon EOS Rebel T3i Digital SLR film? I know it takes photos because it's Digital but I want to know if it also films because I want to make videos in the future when I buy one and someone told me it only takes photos, hence the word "digital".. So my question is, does the Canon EOS Rebel T3i Digital SLR film/make videos/record videos?

Answer
It records videos, film is with the older cameras.

The world digital has nothing to do with making it only shoot photos, whoever told you that has no idea.

T3i is one of the best in video performance.

Is it possible and/or feasible to achieve focus stacking using a digital camera instead of a DSLR?

canon digital camera 60d on Details about Canon EOS 60D 18.0 MP Digital SLR Camera - Black (Body ...
canon digital camera 60d image

Brenton

I have a digital camera (the Olympus Stylus Tough 3000) that I've been recently using more often. I don't have any immediate plans to buy a new camera. It's far from the highest quality camera, but it does have good macro focus, up to 2 cm.
I'm beginning to get into macro photography and realize that I could achieve a greater depth of field and sharper images using a technique called focus stacking. However, all of the tutorials I've found online mention the use of a DSLR camera for this method. There's no mentioning of this method with a regular digital camera.
As I understand it, you need to take a series of shots at varying distances in order to get a greater range of that sharpness you want to achieve. I'm very new at macro photography, so please bear with me.
Is it possible to do proper focus stacking with a normal digital camera and NOT a DSLR?

Answer
Yes it is, focus stacking software will work with image files from any camera, it's just that a DSLR can have a dedicated macro lens fitted, be easier to control and, because of the larger sensor, image quality will be better.

When taking the images a focus slide is useful, these will move the camera a small amount between shots, but keep it aligned. Something like this;-

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/2-Way-Macro-Focus-Rail-Slider-Slide-for-Canon-60D-600D-650D-Nikon-D7000-D90-LF25-/140892713796?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_3&hash=item20cddc3344

They can be used with any camera that has a tripod thread and go between the the tripod and the camera.

What lens is best for taking outdoor/indoor portraits with the Canon 60d?

stacytrott

The canon 60d is my first digital SLR camera and I am looking to upgrade my lens. Currently I am using the 18-135mm kit lens and while it does the job I don't think I am getting the most out of my camera while using it. I want a lens that will give me high aperture while being easy to use as I love taking pictures of my children with the out of focus background. Thanks in advance!

Answer
There's nothing really wrong with the 18-135mm but I think the 18-200mm might be better suited to what you're trying to accomplish. I didn't know anyone personally that I could ask when I had questions, so I just read through the reviews on the site. They were excellent. Good luck with your search.

I want to buy an instant photo camera and I have no idea as to which companies and what camera are good . I am totally new to it . I have no idea about prices too . Please help me out . I want a good camera and good photos (who dosen't ??) and I hope not too costly , I dont think I would like a digital camera coz I already have a sony handycam . Please help me out .

Answer
First you have to decide what is your intended usage for the camera.

If you have professional intentions you need to go in for a DSLR, then decide upon the model and brand.

If you just want it for fun and clicking family pictures, go for any normal digital camera that's about 10-12 megapixels. Nearly all companies have similar features, give or take a few.

Either way you will have to buy a digital camera only - film cameras are passe.

Remember a video camera's primary job is to take videos, so it'll never be too good in still photo results. The same also works vice versa for a still camera.

You can choose from various companies models like Sony, Nikon, Canon which are market leaders.

Cheaper versions would be available in companies like Minolta, Olympus etc.

You can even buy a camera online. It works out quite well for most people.

what is the best camera and video camera combo in india ?
I want to buy a still digital camera which has a good video camera option.
We are going to use more of the still camera but the video camera would be used for small instructional film making once in a while..

Please suggest the best model under the price range of Rs. 30 thousand in India. Also - would you suggest a good website / store to buy it

Much Thanks

Answer
Have you considered a dSLR

Something like the Nikon D3100 goes for 27k, with the 18-55mm kit lens included
http://www.nikon.co.in/en_IN/product_details.page?DCRPath=templatedata/en_IN/saleable_product_information/data/Digital%20SLR%20Cameras/D3100.xml&CategoryID=gp11zkyo&currentTab=&currentLink=

Compare, http://www.dpreview.com/products/compare/side-by-side?products=nikon_d3100&products=canon_eos1100d&products=sony_slta37&products=nikon_d3200&products=nikon_d5100

It can do 1920x1080 video at 24 fps
Also checkout the Canon EOS 1100D, minus part is it can only do 1280x720 @ 30 fps
And if videos are a priority with you, the Sony SLT-A37 is the clear winner with 1920x1080 video at 60 fps

Do some reading and familiarize yourself
A dSLR is the ultimate photography tool

Ultimate selection you need to make, go to your local camera stores and handle the ones you shortlist
The one which best fits your hand, best suits your style ... that's it !!

I connected the camera (canon eos rebel t3) which i just recently got, to a mac computer and the camera blinks red once and the lcd screen turns black.. i'm wondering why it does this.. nothing happens on the computer screen.. how do i get my videos onto the computer?
please help me.. i really need an answer.
thank you very much.

Answer
Unfortunately, Canon requires you copy the software that came with the camera in order to copy image files from the camera to your computer. You will need to find your installation disc that came with your T3 and install it on the Apple computer

This is why those of us who have been using digital cameras for over a decade, use card readers. No additonal software is needed. With an Apple computer, you can use the card reader and Finder to copy all the images to your computer. With a PC, you can use Windows Explorer to do the same thing

What is the difference between these two cameras?

Electricvi

I know that camera A comes with accesories, but there is no other difference between the cameras (Not even the price!). I am new to DSLR and SLR cameras, so I don't know much about them. Which buy would be better?

Camera A: http://www.walmart.com/ip/Canon-Black-EOS-Rebel-T3-Digital-SLR-Camera-Bundle-4GB-SD-Card-and-Bag-with-Additional-Bonus-16GB-Memory-Card-and-Tripod/21997675

Camera B: http://www.walmart.com/ip/Canon-12.2MP-5157B002AA/15754560?findingMethod=Recommendation:wm:RecentlyViewedItems
I realized that the camera not in the bundle comes supports RAW files, which are better to edit and are not compressed. Which one should I get based on that?

Answer
The bundle has accessories that you probably wouldn't buy elsewhere and it would be pricey if you try to buy them one by one. I would get the bundle.

Is there any way i can get this camera shipped from the United States to India ?

I am not sure about digital cameras specifically, but many online shops do not accept international orders or offer international shipping.

Here is a shopping directory website listing online shops that ship to India:

out of sony, nikon and canon, which is the best for a digicam?

v j

i want answers frm amateur n professional photographers frm india preferably.if there s a better company please tell me. i'm more interested in the quality of pics and durability rather than a stylish digicam.

Answer
Since you are looking for quality of pictures, I will point you towards the SLR's. They are head and shoulders above the point and shoot cameras for quality of pictures. In the pronsumer-level market, I favor the Nikon D80.

The February 2007 issue of Popular Photography has an article where they compared the top 10 MP DSLR's. I took the scores and ranked the cameras similar to the way Formula 1 gives championship points. I just gave 5 for 1st place down to 1 for last place, splitting the difference when cameras tied in their catagories.

They evaluated Image Quality (giving this twice as much weight as anything else), Ease of Use, Control, and System Flexibility.

The final order and my scores are:

Nikon D80 - 17.5 points
- BEST in Image Quality, Control and System Flexibility
Canon Rebel XTi (400D) - 13.5 points
- Tied for best in System Flexibility
Pentax K10D - 11 points
- Tied for best in Ease of Use
Samsung GX10 - 11 points
- Tied for best in Ease of Use
Sony Alpha 100 - 7 points
- LAST in Image Quality, Ease of Use and System Flexibility."

Then again, this is the same magazine that put the Sony Alpha 100 dead last in this comparison named it the camera of the year in the previous issue! (In a follow-up to this seeming error, Pop Photo published the explanation that only the D80 and the Sony had been tested by the end-of-year deadline for choosing the Camera of the Year. Sony won on the strength of low price and built-in image stabilization. The other 3 that beat Sony in shoot-out were not tested until after the Camera of the Year was selected, because they were not yet available.)

Go to the original question and read the responses for more opinions.
http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=AiG00eHyd0oq5b.X7J.jiULzy6IX?qid=20070113133139AAHWJY0

If you want to get the "best" for the real world, consider the Nikon D200 or Canon 30D if you can afford it. For about $300-500 less, look at the results of the recent PopPhoto test and choose from that list according to your taste.

Personally, I use a Nikon D200 and would recommend it without hesitation to someone who has some knowledge of photography. For someone who wants the "best," but is starting with somewhat of an "entry level" knowledge base, I'd suggest the Nikon D80.

There are people out there who will state their preference for the Canon cameras and I will not argue with them. The Canon 30D and 400D are excellent cameras as well.

You would have to visit a camera store or camera department and pick them up and see what you think.

This review is now available online at:

http://www.popphoto.com/cameras/3569/10mp-dslr-shootout.html

Here's another reference from outside the photographic press. Consumer reports compared the Nikon D80, Canon Rebel XTi and Sony Alpha. Personally, I'd say that the Nikon came out on top here, also. It beats the Sony in "noise-free ISO" with an acceptable rating at ISO 1600 (kind of optimistic, I think...) compared to the Sony's ISO 400. It beats the Canon (in my opinion) by having a spot meter that the Canon does not offer.

http://www.consumerreports.org/cro/electronics-computers/news-electronics-computers/november-2006/shootout-10-megapixel-digital-slr-cameras-11-06/overview/0611_digital-slr-shoot-out.htm

Here's another comparison of interest:

http://www.digitalcamerainfo.com/content/Canon-Rebel-XTi-vs-Nikon-D80-vs-Sony-Alpha-A100-Head-to-Head-to-Head-Digital-Camera-Review-.htm
[Note the navigation menu near the top of the review]

The next thing to consider is what lens to start with and where you go from there. If you are new to this, I'd say to just get the "kit" lens, which seems to be the 18-135 lens for the D80, and get started. Once you know where you really want to go with your photography, Nikon has an almost unlimited family of lenses to choose from.

Answer
In consumer digital cameras I'd give Canon the edge over Nikon then Olympus and Sony.

The Nikon consumer range are just a bit too variable and that is said as a professional user of Nikon equipment for nearly 30 years.

Other than megapixels what should I check for when buying a digital camera?

paul.sanja

What are the points to check when buying a digital camera? What are the usual problems one faces with such cameras?

Is going for Canon or Nikon a safe bet?

Answer
What gives a camera its picture quality?

The short answer is that it is mostly the skill of the photographer that produces high quality pictures. The lens and camera are very important, but the ability to set the scene, adjust the cameras settings, and hold the camera very still or use a tripod with auto or remote shutter actuation when required is what gets the great pictures.

Many of the new cameras come with only an LCD screen. Would suggest that you find one that also has an optical view finder because the LCD screen is almost impossible to see in bright sun.

Higher mega pixels may not really be the best thing to look for. It is more expensive, takes longer to process, and may not be needed unless you are making a really large picture or blowing up a small part of a picture. http://www.kodak.com/eknec/PageQuerier.jhtml?pq-path=398&pq-locale=en_US&_requestid=2039 ...

Check this camera. FUJIFILM - FinePix 10.0-Megapixel Digital. This is more camera for the money.
Wide-angle shooting, a 12x optical zoom and picture stabilization mode combine in this camera for exceptional shooting performance, even at a distance. Plentiful scene modes, autofocus and automatic white balance controls make this camera a snap to operate. Life time Warranty (Parts & Labor). You may be able to find it on the Internet for a lower price ($144), but be careful of the vendor.

The information about my camera is just to show that you don't need the biggest and best. Just know how to use the one you have.

My camera has 5.2 mega pixel, but I use 3 most of the time because it gives great results, is faster, and takes less memory. Also, it only has a 3 x optical zoom and 7x digital zoom. I never use the digital zoom because making pictures larger works better on the computer. This is an old camera, but everyone is impressed with the quality pictures it takes ... like magic.

Check with the Geeks in several stores and compare prices. Ask what cameras they own. Once you select a camera read all about it in the owner's manual.

The source links will show most of the cameras out there with prices and help make your digital cameras work better.

I am really concerned about the picture quality because i am a digital camera beginner and i really want to buy a good digital camera. If possible, it would be great if u can show me some pictures taken by this camera! Thanks!

Answer
Showing you photos taken by a professional or advanced amateur will not in any way represent the photos you can expect as a beginner. It takes a lot of time to learn how to use the camera and longer how to get a brilliant image each time you press the shutter release.

You may want to take at least one beginning class in photography before you spend $700 on an entry level dSLR like a Nikon D3100 or Canon T3/1100D

Is there any way that I can learn photography but no need to pay big bucks?

I'm just a beginner...I'm interested in taking baby pictures since my baby was born. I only carry a regular simple canon digital camera, and I am thinking of getting a more professional one and learn how to use different lenses, photoshop, etc.. Is there any resources that I can learn more about photography? My budget is pretty tight...is there any affordable resources?

Answer
to teach people things like maths and english there are schools - just like photography, - funny concept schools they are popular world wide (i only say it like that for those that think running around snapping a thousand pix a day will produce great images)

my advise is do a night school course in B+W photography (if you really want to learn), otherwise any "digital" photography night course will help you produce better images of Jnr - congrats by the way

Which camera should I get?

My birthday is coming up in a few days, and I'm currently in Pakistan to celebrate it here. I wanted a professional camera for the longest time, and thought the perfect time to ask for one, would be on my birthday. The problem is, that I'm not sure which one to get. Also, I'm not sure of the prices either. I'm a beginner so I don't want a highly professional one though. But I love photography, and don't know which camera is worth the price.

Can anyone tell me which professional camera I should get, how much it comes for, and possible where to get it?

Answer
If you are considering DIGITAL cameras instead of film cameras, then...

Get the digital camera by Canon that is in your price range.

There is no other digital camera that is better in color and picture quality than Canon.

If you want a film camera, then you will have to ask someone else, I have never done any research on what is a good film camera.

This is the camera I will be getting Canon Black EOS Rebel T3 Digital SLR.
We take photos from everything from, portraits, flowers, insects, various events, a lot of outside stuff.

Answer
When I came upon your question you had added your favorite subjects. When I reentered the DSLR market after using bridge cameras and film cameras where you could focus as close as a 5x7 print, I realized that TWO extra lenses in addition to the lens 28-55mm that came with the camera was necessary. And if you want to get particular a third (portrait lens) is necessary.
The following is why if you read my comments, when giving advise to newbies, I often refer to DSLR's are "money pits".
With my new Pentax Kx I got the usual 28-55mm. Then added the 50-200mm lens. Makes a great all around kit. BUT then macro entered, I could not take flower, etc. So I looked around and bought the $850 100mm lens on the used market for about $500. (it is an earlier model lens from the film era,-thankyou Pentax). Now what to do about portraits. My wife and I are in our 70's so we don't want "crystal clear show every speck" pictures. I called Tiffen filter co. and they suggested a Tiffen Warm Soft F3 for $48.00. Works get but to my tastes I am going to go for abit softer yet. I use the "warm soft on the long end of my 50-200mm lens, usually about 150mm.

Hope my experiences & how I solved them help you.

Good Luck

Answer
Not only does it vary from state to state, but it also varies from county to county and even in some municipalities.
If you figure 10% or $60 you should be on the safe side.
Best Buy doesn't ever have the best prices on anything-they're usually really kind of high in price.
If you order from www.adorama.com there should be no tax and no shipping charge to CA. It's worth waiting 2 days for the savings.
$549 at Adorama: http://www.adorama.com/ICAT3K.html
You'd save about $100 bucks at least. If you chose 3 day delivery at $15 it's still cheaper than the camera at Best Buy WITHOUT the tax.

Answer
The top rated entry level SLRs are Nikon's D40, D60 and D80 and Canon's Xti and XSi.

The best thing to do it trying them all in a store, you'll know which one YOU like best. Personally I like them all, but leaning somewhat to the Canon XSi. But it's a matter of what you like and what you want to spend on a camera.
The D40 is the least expensive and still a favorite for a starter DSLR.

Is there any way that I can learn photography but no need to pay big bucks?

pui

I have recently bought Canon A430 Digital camera. I want to know how I can use it for auto shoot for set time.

Suppose other cameras have 5 sec, 10 sec delay then we can shoot our picture by just keeping the camera ready.

Thanks for your answers!

Answer
Your camera has a 2 or 10 sec self-timer.

It has no interval timer ... those are found usually on the high-end DSLR cameras.

What is your opinion on Canon digital cameras?

money

I bought a Canon digital camera 4 years ago and it broke down 1 month ago. to repair it will cost me $200. is it normal?

Answer
Canon is a good company, but nothing lasts forever, you have to realize it. If you cherish your camera you can repair it but better get another one, I would advise another Canon as you already have the software and the gadget for it.

What would be the best digital camera for a high school photography class?

I asked the photography teacher and she said get a digital camera that has as many manual parts as possible (i think she means a camera that can be put into manual mode?). I was thinking an entry level DSLR such as the Canon Rebel XSI or Sony Alpha A200W, but possibly a high-end point and shoot. I really need some help!
the digital cameras must have as many manual parts to it. (so not just an auto focus lens

Answer
For the most camera of the investment, look for a Nikon D40 with AF-S 18-55 mm ED lens for under $470. It will be a good start and if you later decide to go pro, you will have your camera system started ...

Don't get hooked on the pixel count of cameras.

Why to use a UV filter in a Digital Camera?

hanalwala

I have recently purchased a Canon EOS Rebel XSi digital camera with two 18/55mm and 55/250mm lens with it. I would like to know if it is better if I were to buy a UV filter and use it or it is not required? I have also purchased a wide angle lens which I will attche to the 18/55mm lens to get a better wide angle . Do I need a UV filter over it ? Please advise.

Answer
It has much more to do with protecting the front element of your lenses than the little enhancement the UV can give to shots taken outdoors.

Replacing a $40 filter is cheap and easy. Having the front element of a lens repaired is expensive and takes time while the lens is visiting the Canon repair station.

Each lens you own should have some kind of filter on it; UV, skylight or clear glass ... your choice.

Cheap add-on lenses don't need a protective filter ... the filter may cost more than the lens in some cases.

I want to buy a new touch screen camera because I've seen ads for the new Kodak Slice and Sony Cyber-Shot TX7. There are a lot of brands and cameras out there and I want to find the perfect camera for me. I am looking for something durable with HD video, excellent picture quality, touch screen, picture editing and painting and so on. I currently have the Sony Cyber-shot T300 and I love nearly everything about it but I want more features. Any ideas?

Where can I find a Canon XSi pocket guide online?

sorccy

I just bought the Canon XSi digital camera. It comes with a nice little pocket guide, but since I bought my camera in Japan, it's in Japanese. I've already found the user manual through Canon's website, but they don't have the pocket guide. Anyone know where to find one online?

Answer
Their website has it in PDF format. http://www.canoneos.com

How to recover deleted photos/videos from a digital camera (canon)?

canon digital camera software image

Bandito

I accidently deleted pictures on my canon digital camera, and i know i need cardrecovery or other photo recovery tools to install. But then i dunno how. I have installed the cardrecovery software and it says first connect your camera or the memory card to your computer. " I did that". Then i need to know what the drive letter is? I have no clue about this. I think it must be D:.

Can someone help me by telling me step by step how i can get my precious fotos back. For free if possible.

Thanks

Answer
Hi, here is the steps might be helpful to you:
1. Connect the memory card to computer. Under "My Computer", note the drive letter assigned to your camera's memory card (usually G: or H:).
2. Download this program on your compute. here is the link: http://www.asoftech.com/apr/
3. Install and start the program. then select the drive where your lost files located, click Start. Now the scanning process will start to search the deleted files. After a while you will then get a list of recoverable files.
4. Press Recover to perform full recovery.

Zoombrowser-How do I save a zoomed version of a photo?

Alex36

I have a photo on Zoombrowser (the Canon digital camera software) on which I want to zoom in on a particular part (the people) and save. But when I try to do that, and select "Save As", the photo goes back to the way it was (unzoomed). Can you modify the photo like this in Zoombrowser?

Answer
You cannot do that. When you do a zoomed in view, that is all it is, it is not actually recreating the photo into a larger size. As said in the other answer, to do what you want requires cropping of the photo and resizing. I have used Zoombrowser in the past and I can't remember if it is capable of that or not. It is actually a very limited program designed to do just the most basic editing functions.

A program such as Photoshop is what you need, or you can download GIMP for free:
