digital camera?

vnoe07

I am looking into buying a compact digital camera and wondering what would be the best buy??? I'm looking to spend 200-300 on it. I'm not overly computer savvy, so something simply and good quality. Am I asking too much? Any suggestions???
I have heard that the Canon Powershot is good....but which one???
thanks so much

Answer
You're right about looking into Canon's. They have several in your price range. These prices are from B&H Photo, available through Yahoo! Shopping.

A630 - 8.0 MP - $195
A570-IS - 7.1 MP - $207
SD1000 - 7.1 MP - $209 (Silver)
A710-IS - 7.1 MP - $239
SD1000 - 7.1 MP - $240 (Black)
A640 - 10.0 MP - $260
SD750 - 7.1 MP - $275 (Silver or black) (no viewfinder)
S3-IS - 6.0 MP - $297
SD700-IS - 6.0 MP - $305

My order of preference would be almost the reverse order of that list.

Sleek, ultra compact cameras:
SD700-IS, if you can still find one. This is a very cool camera.
SD730, has no "image stabilization" or optical viewfinder, but has the newest image processor and very true colors.
SD1000, is an update of the extremely popular SD600 and it should be just well-received.

Compact cameras:
A640 and A630 - I'd buy one of these myself for the really great image quality and user control that is available, if you want it. It has the largest sensor in the list, which is always an attraction for me due to the image quality.
A710-IS - called the "poor man's G7" by some.
A570-IS - cheaper and possibly as good as the A710-IS

Ultrazoom:
The S3-IS is the way to go if you want to take ultra zoomed close ups of things far away.

Out of the bunch, I'd buy the A640 or SD700-IS for myself.

Digital Camera....?

[un]bro/ke

What is a good yet cheaper priced digital. Thanks!

Answer
Consumer Reports for November 2006 has ranked the Canon Powershot A620 as the best compact digital camera. It is becoming almost a legend for longevity at the top of various consumer lists. It looks like this model has been replaced by the A630, which I would expect to be just as popular. The A640 appears quite similar and shares the "600" series numbering, so I guess it's just another upgraded version of the now-classic A620. It looks pretty much the same except for baing a 10 MP camera. The continuous drive is a little slower, but the files are larger, so that's no surprise. I own a few Nikon DSLR's and I'd buy the Canon A630 or A640 for myself.

With this camera, you will find the memory card is a cute little token of thanks from Canon, but not much more. Buy a 1 GB Sandisk Ultra II or Extreme III card. You will NEED the increased capacity and write speed to fully realize the benefits of your camera.

If you want to trim the budget a little, the Canon Powershot A430, A530 or A540, are all great choices. You will still need a decent memory card as discussed above, though.

what happen to the CD included with the camera?

You can go to canon's website and get the driver there.

Where can i go to get my camera fixed? ?

sofia

i live in the philippines-- so a specific lcoation would be REALLY helpful. i'm looking for places other than the canon service center. :) i went there yesterday and they gave me a really bad price.

Answer
Honestly, this is a frequent occurrence with digital equipment. Many times, equipment winds up costing more to repair than it is worth. If you find a markedly cheaper price for the repair, I would be concerned as to whether it is actually being done correctly.

So, at this point the question is really whether or not the camera is worth repairing.

How much is Kodak Easy Share M1063 camera?

alyana

Im from the Philippines. I am looking for a camera with a reasonable price and has quality pictures?

Answer
From bhphotovideo.com that camera in the color pink runs about $150.00

I would recommend, though, maybe a different brand than Kodak.
if you would like to spend a little more, http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/610513-REG/Nikon__Coolpix_S220_Digital_Camera.html

-The benefits of that camera are the vibration reduction, and higher ISO (which means you will make better pictures in low light situations.)

The Nikon is a much better camera both by reputation, statistics, and my personal experience, but I would also recommend a Canon.

If you keep it Canon or Nikon, you can't go wrong.

Buying Olympus E-520 Camera in 2012?

Don

Is the Olympus e-520 digital camera still good to buy in 2012?
I got a slightly used Olympus e-520, is a 2008 model...i don't know if it's good to buy now.

Please tell me if you know about cameras.
Thank you

Answer
The Canon and Nikon fanboys will be along in a moment to tell you otherwise, but this is a thoroughly nice piece of kit.

By the way, the difference between 4/3rds and micro 4/3rds has nothing to do with sensor size, 4/3rds are DSLRs and over the years Olympus have made some very nice ones.

I'm assuming it comes at least with the 14-42mm standard zoom - don't touch it without a lens - and try to handle it before you commit yourself, but if it feels right and you like the price, by all means, go for it.

Canon Powershot lens error?

Rob

I just got a Canon Powershot SX100 IS ,it was working fine and all of a sudden. i got a lens error restart camera. please help

Answer
If you did not obstruct the lens, would think there is a battery problem. Digital cameras require lots of power. As you call on it to do more things like extending the lens and focusing the power requirement goes up.

I had a similar problem with my camera and finally discovered that the problem was with the battery to camera electrical connections. I cleaned the contacts as described in the source link about two months ago and have not had a problem since.

The following excerpts came from the source link. Hope this helps!

Most cameras will reset to original settings if batteries are removed for at least one minute. Remove extra memory to eliminate this as a possible problem. Insert fully charged batteries and restart the camera.

The secret to making digital cameras work better is having good electrical contacts between the batteries and the camera.

Digital cameras require lots of power. If electrical contacts are not really good, this can cause lots of problems so battery and camera contacts must be cleaned properly. Batteries may be fully charged, but will be viewed as low if contacts are not really good. The LCD display is a low steady load, but when lens extension, optical zoom, focus, and flash charging are added in the capture mode; the load is very heavy. With bad contacts, cameras do strange things like making bad pictures or shutting off with the lens out.

To prevent overcharge, use an automatic two or more hour battery charger with safety timer, temperature monitor and trickle charge technology ($9.78). For longer life, NiMH batteries should be charged often and kept in active use. To preserve battery charge, use the view finder and not the LCD display when possible. Maximum capacity is reached after 2 to 4 charge/discharge cycles.

I JUST bought my new Canon Digital Elph camera and it worked for about a week, and then whenever i tried to turn it on it says "Lens error, please restart camera." I JUST bought it and i've never dropped it or anything. Sometimes it'll turn on and work perfectly, but other times it won't. It's happening more and more frequently now. How do i fix it?

Answer
Lens errors usually (but not always) occur when the camera's lens has been damaged (from being dropped) or if the lens is hindered from extending. The best way to make sure neither occurs, is to use the supplied hand wrist (which will save it from a fall) or before turning the camera on, make sure it's in review mode and then turn it on, making sure you don't obstruct the lens.

Seeing as this camera is brand new...I would return it, because it could just be a dud camera. If you do get it replaced, make sure you are always very careful with how you handle it, especially when turning it on or off...

p.s. near the back of your User Guide there is a list of Error Messages. "Lens error, restart camera". Canon advises you to turn the camera off, then on again. If the problems continues it will need to be serviced. So, returning it, would be the best option, because it is under warranty.

good luck...

What is the best value in digital cameras?

BlueFish

Our Kodak EasyShare CX4230 is dead. It was a 2.0 megapixel camera and we have the docking station and the memory cards. I need to replace it and am not sure what to look at. This camera worked great and was easy to use. I liked the zoom on in but hated the delay from when I pressed the button till when the pictures was taken. Any suggestions? I'd prefer to keep in under $200. We are using it primarly to take pictures of our adorable and quick toddlers.

Answer
I LOVE my Canon PowerShot A620. It's a 7.1 mp camera which takes awesome still shots, and just as awesome video. Great for home and everyday use. Easy to take on vacations and you can really take some artistic/creative photos too. A great all-around camera. My 35mm cameras are Canon too, and I still love and use it. Sony makes good stuff also.

I had a Sony, and I gave that to my daughter, and purchased the Canon PowerShot A610 for my teenage son. The Canon A610 is exactly like my A620, but is a 5 mp digital camera. They both take GREAT pictures, but my favorite thing about the camera, is the vari-angle LCD screen. It is very easy to use, and a camera you can grow with.

Our A610/A620 has a setting, call "kids&pets". Typically you use these on the subjects that usually has a hard time keeping still. But I also use this setting when taking pictures of my soccer team during game play. I've also taken pictures of my kids, nieces and nephews jumping in the air, a la cheerleader jumps, with great results. Lag time is very, very, very minimal. (i.e. delay from pressing button to actual camera capturing the shot). This is just one of the many settings the camera has to offer and you can also manually set and program your own settings.

For ease of point and shoot, just choose the setting in which you're taking pictures of, (i.e. indoor, outdoor, nighttime, portrait, fireworks, snow, beach, and 'auto' [automatic]), and it'll adjust accordingly the proper exposure/settings. If you get more experience or for the experienced, you can manually choose exposure and settings like the old 35 mm.

I'm a bargain hunter. I purchased both NEW Canon this late spring 2006 on line. My son's was under $200 and mine was $204. Just Google or Yahoo! Search any Canon model, and then see which merchant has the best price with those lowprice websites and order on-line. The price is waaaay better than going physically to the stores. If you need it right away, just upgrade the shipping. It's still cheaper than buying at the stores. No matter what model camera you're searching for, better prices are on-line.

I don't know if you'll find this model (A610) at the stores. They have newer models, the A630 (8mp) and the A640 (10mp), they boast more mega-pixels and ISO settings. But 5mp, more than suffices for most users. What I did was physically touched and feel the camera at the store, then go on-line to purchase. But if you prefer to purchase at the stores, some good places are Best Buy, Wal Mart and Target. Suprisingly enough, they have good selection at Wal-Mart and Target.

Here is the link if you'd like to check out the specs on these Canon cameras: http://www.usa.canon.com
and go to 'products' to 'consumer products' to lead you to the cameras. it tells you what the camera has and what it looks like up close.

While you're searching on-line, you'll also find many reviews on these cameras. All with many positives things to say about the camera. You'll also find information on these cameras in Yahoo! Tech http://tech.yahoo.com/rc/digital-cameras...

Hope this helps in your hunt for a new digital camera!

The Best Digital Camera?

..HP

My Casio just recently broke. We sent it to Casio, but they said that since there was a lens error, the warranty didn't count, and we have to pay $135 to get it fixed. Which we aren't going to do. My mom's going to try and get them to fix it for free, but I don't think that's going to happen.

So my question is: What is the best compact digital camera? I really like the Nikon Coolpix S210 (in blue, $180). Or is the Canon Powershot SD1100 good (pink, $199)? That's nice, too. That's the type of camera I'm looking for, and no higher price. Thanks in advanceâ®

Answer
The all time winner bargain compact digital camera is the Canon 7.1 megapixel PowerShot SD1000 [not the SD1100 [IS] 7.1 with an added 2- gig memory card which when set in the manual mode for "Vivid" colors and videos at 30 fps in 320 dpi format provides killer images and videos under low light conditions. The macro feature is superb for taking closeups of small butterflies, insects, etc. It currently sells for $140 at techgearnow.com:

Best SLR 35mm camera?

My dad is into photography and his birthday is coming up in 3 weeks. He has a DSLR camera and one those cameras that use silver plates (big old thing). He used to develop pictures himself and he still has the equipment. He sometimes uses an AE-1 program canon camera but I want to get him something more professional. Any suggestions?

Answer
I love the canon AE-1 program. That was my first real camera and I still use it (it's actually my favorite camera).

Buying a camera for someone like your dad is very tricky. I honestly would ask him first or I give him a gift certificate or something. Hobbyists like him most likely have strong opinions on what they really like. Even though I'm sure he would like whatever you give him, it's a good chance he may have chosen something else on his own.

When you said you wanted to get him something more professional, did you mean film or digital? Did you mean an old camera or a new camera?

The canon F-1 is the old professional canon camera (that uses the same lenses as the AE-1 Program).

Or if you wanted to get him a camera that he can use his DSLR lenses with, then you should go to the the official website of whatever brand he has, and take it from there.

Buena suerte/Good luck.

What kind of camera would you recommend for me?

Josie

Im just 14 i dont want a proffesional 500$ camera. Im fine with a digital camera. I want about 16 megapixels and my price range sorry its a bit low its 110 at the most maybe 120. Im just looking for a fun camera. the MAIN thing i want in a camera is image stability. So that the slightest movement wont affect my picture. Because my hands are a bit shaky sometimes and my my moms camera the pics get blurry if you shake just a little. thanks!

Answer
There are plenty of entry level camera's in your price range. My suggestion would be Canon since they do the best overall packages (in my opinion)in terms of image quality, build quality and features.

http://www.usa.canon.com/cusa/consumer/products/cameras/digital_cameras
The A series are the best option for your price range. Note that the official canon website prices are actually 10-20usd more expensive than what you can find online on Amazon or B&H Photo.com.

I would also recommend the Nikon compacts, I recently bought an S5200 for a friend who was perfectly happy with it:

http://www.nikonusa.com/en/Nikon-Products/Compact-Digital-Cameras/index.page#!/tag:nkE:Up To $150

As far as Image Stabilization, it's included in all camera's these days and it's pretty well implemented so you don't have to worry about not having that feature.

Cheapest AC Adapter for a Canon digital camera...?

Q. The camera is a Canon Powershot A590 IS.

The only charger I could find was $40 and I think there are cheaper ones out there, but I can't find one. I don't want to buy a whole kit because I already bought a kit for the camera, sans the charger because it was so expensive. When looking for it make sure it's the Powershoot version, because the plain A590 charger is the wrong charger!
I am not looking for a battery charger, what I am looking for is to plug the camera into a cord that plugs into a wall and provides the camera with energy/electricity.

Answer
There are many dual purpose charger/adapters available, both from specialist battery shops and on eBay. If you buy from an eBay camera accessories specialist who has good feedback and who has been around for a few years you should be pretty safe. Current limiting Lithium Ion chargers and adapters are very basic technology and use of high cost OE charging equipment is not really necessary.

cheapest digital camera worth buying?

i need a cheap digital camera (probably somewhere around $90 to $150) that works really well? i want it to have all the basic scenery options and flash options and it wouldnt hurt if it was slim/thin. i want the display screen about "2. anyone know of a good camera that fits that criteria?
oh i forgot one more thing...i want it to have a rechargeable battery. pinktoez just reminded me of that lol
well thing is i have more money but my parents wont let me spend it all...so i have to buy a cheap camera and i have to have it by this weekend...so im out of luck. just please help me with an idea! i really dont care what brand it is or if its even a used camera i jsut need one! thanks in advance! =]

Answer
Dude. When the questioner says that she has a budget of $90-to-$150, why are you recommending a $250 camera?

I think best the camera in your price range is the Canon Powershot A550. It costs $135 at B&H and other retailers. You can use the rest of your budget to buy a decent memory card.

Go here and read an extensive review:
A550 review: http://www.steves-digicams.com/2007_reviews/a550.html

Check the sample images, too.

If you can spend just a little more, check for the A560. You gain one stop in ISO, it is a little faster in continuous mode and the LCD is 2.5" instead of 2".

Canon A560: http://www.steves-digicams.com/2007_reviews/a560.html

You will need to add a memory card and I suggest the Sandisk or Lexar brand in any speed. You will spend from about $20 for a 512 KB card, which is perfectly adequate, to about $40 for a Sandisk Ultra II, which is as good as you'd ever want for this or many other cameras.

My brother has the A540 and my mother-in-law has the A530 - on my recommendation - and neither one has stopped speaking to me yet. These are the models that were replaced by the A550 and A560.

The camera uses two "AA" batteries, but you can use any brand of rechargeable NiMH batteries. Four batteries and a charger would cost another $20-ish.

I'm surprised to see that Vic has not mentioned the Nikon L10, but this is also a decent camera in your prince range. I don't like the fact that it does not have an optical viewfinder, but most people aren't too worried about this feature in this price range.

Good Priced Digital Camera?

Nikki

Anyone know of a decent priced digital camera for an 11 year old boy? He is just starting out with a digital camera so we don't need anything too extravagant and we also want something durable. Any help would be awesome.

Answer
While most of the cameras out there are really good, I would choose Canon over Nikon because it seems like more camera for the money. Some would say Canon withholds their best technology for high end cameras and Nikon implements their best at all levels. Before you decide, read all the text and links in the information below because it will help you know what to look for in a camera.

There is no one particular place to get great buys, but you may see something below that really helps you find the best buy. Click on the first link in the information below for an example then search for your camera of choice at the upper left. Camera prices at this link change often.

Just saw this camera at Best Buy and think it is a great camera and a best buy. It has an optical viewfinder, image stabilizer, auto focus, and uses NiMH rechargeable batteries. Read as much of the following as you can for other information and help with choosing a camera.
Canon A590IS $149.99 at Best Buy store yesterday.
http://bountii.com/deal-1523871-canon-powershot-8-0-megapixel.html ...

There are so many cameras out there it is difficult to say which is best, but digital is definitely the way to go. The second source link will be very helpful as it list most of the cameras out there with prices. The following information should help you know what to look for in a camera.

What gives a camera its picture quality?
The short answer is that it is mostly the skill of the photographer that produces high quality pictures. The lens and camera are very important, but the ability to set the scene, adjust the cameras settings, and hold the camera very still or use a tripod with auto or remote shutter actuation when required is what gets the great pictures.

Many of the new cameras come with only an LCD screen which is almost impossible to see in bright sun so you should try to find one that also has an optical view finder.

Check replacement battery prices when buying a new camera. Some proprietary batteries cost almost as much as the camera and may be only good for 200 shots between charges.

Higher mega pixels may not really be the best thing to look for. It is more expensive, takes longer to process, and may not be needed unless you are making a really large picture or blowing up a small part of a picture. Maximum print size for a 3 mega pixel setting is 8 x 10 inches.

The information about my camera is just to show that you don't need the biggest and best. Just know how to use the one you have.

My camera has 5.2 mega pixel, but I use 3 most of the time because it gives great results, is faster, and takes less memory. Also, it only has a 3 x optical zoom and 7 x digital zoom. I never use the digital zoom because making pictures larger works better on the computer. This is an old camera, but everyone is impressed with the quality pictures it takes ... like magic.

Check with the Geeks in several stores and compare prices. Ask what cameras they own, but don't believe everything you hear. Once you select a camera read all about it in the owner's manual. Just learned that my camera has red-eye prevention and correction. It also has adaptive lighting. You may be able to view owners manuals at this link, but will need to Login. http://www.retrevo.com/s/digital+camera ...

The source links will show most of the cameras out there with prices and help make your digital cameras work better.

I am planning on buying a digital camera but i know nothing about them. So i have no idea what i should be looking for in a camera and what cameras are good and everything. if you have any suggestions of good digital cameras or and info about them like what mega pixels are and stuff please answer!! i also have a budget of highest price $200 dollars. THANKS!!

Answer
canon is by far the best brand for digital cameras. if i were you id be looking for at least 10 megapixels, the red-eye correction feature, the blink detection feature, and face detection. the best camera with that is the canon powershot sd1200 for $200, or if you were willing to spend an extra $50 the canon powershot sd780, which has 12.5 megapixels in addition to the other features. but make sure you go to the canon website to check out the other features and the product tour and the ratings and reviews before buying.

help with Canon Powershot SX200 IS Digital Camera?

O MTZ

hey what up people? so i want to buy a canon camera but i just want to know if u can Zoom in While Recording A Video?? thanks!

Canon Powershot SX200 IS

Answer
The answer is NO. All (or most) digital cameras have both optical zoom and digital zoom.

Digital zoom should NEVER be used because all it does is allow you to zoom in on the image via software that's in the camera...which means your images/videos become very pixellated and look horrible.

Most Canon cameras DO NOT allow you to zoom in optically while recording a video. But...they DO allow you to zoom in digitally while recording a video (usually around 3 or 4x). Which means the quality will be quite poor.

So, that tells me that Jill (who has this camera) has her digital zoom set to ON. I would advise her to turn it OFF...unless she doesn't mind the crappy quality that digital zoom produces.

Once again, the answer is no. If you want to be able to zoom in while recording a video, you need to look at one of Canon's other super-zoom cameras, instead (e.g. SX10 IS or SX1 IS). Or, buy a camcorder...

what is the best digital camera in canon?

j

I'm not a professional or expert photographer so I have no idea about the ISO, or noise thing. Whenever I read reviews regarding canon g10, that's the usual words i can see. Is Canon G10 excellent? I really want to buy a slr but I cant afford it.

Answer
I recommend Canon Digital Rebel XSi 12.2 MP Digital SLR Camera.
If you do a search on reviews of this camera you will find a lot of first time DSLR buyers deciding to get this camera. I am one of them. After years of Point and Shoot camera use thinking the convenience of carrying them and using them was worth it, I came to the realization that I wasn't happy with most of the pictures I took. They preserved the moment but almost none of them were worth blowing up or printing. Mediocre flash, zoom, megapixels, etc limited me and the pictures.

I love all the features of this camera for the price, especially the dedicated ISO button on top and the menu system is very easy to figure out, and the 3 inch LCD screen. There is also the switch to SD memory cards which are apparently easier to use than CF. It is so easy to take the card out, put it in an SD USB card reader, load the pictures and return the card to the camera, rather than have to fiddle around with opening the little door on the camera and connecting a cable from it to the PC.

If you are contemplating buying your first DSLR you must remember that the camera is just the start. You will need to invest in a quality external flash to improve your flash pictures. And there is the various zoom lens, that now utilize Image or Optical Stabilization, a technology worth the extra cost. I was happy to do all this and I am absolutely satisfied with this camera and the Canon lens and flash as well. I now am very happy with carrying a bigger but absolutely superior camera.

i need a good professional canon digital camera, what do you recommend?

janage1

Hi im at uni, and this year i want to use photography in my fashion course, mainly setup pictures involving people and buildings. Im looking for something that takes really good quality bright digital images but am clueless as to which canon to go for
if i was to pursue this in the future as a part time trade, does it matter that i stick to digital? and do i need diffrent lenses

thanks

Answer
Wow, this is a really tough question to answer without knowing more about you and your intentions.

Firstly, if you are pursuing this in a part time trade you don't want to spend the money on a Hasselblad or a Mamiya. Those cameras cost tens of thousands of dollars plus the cost of lenses.

You said Canon so here we go.

If you were going full time pro I would say the Canon EOS 1Ds Mark lll which will run you around $8000.00 or so. Oh yeah and you need different lenses for different situations.

The problem you face is that fashion photography requires expensive gear because magazines, agents, and clients require very large image files. That translates to both expensive camera bodies and expensive lenses. You truly do get what you pay for.

It sounds to me, however, that you are a fashion student who just wants to create portraits as portfolio for your fashion pieces.

You don't need the "pro" gear for that at all.

In fact I would recommend getting a used Canon 40D (maybe around $800 - $900 used?) because the 50D just came out. Save money on the body and you can spend more on the lenses. The lenses will be there if you wish to upgrade to a better camera in the future.

I suggest two lenses for fashion photography as a starter.

Get a Canon 50mm 1.4 about $400 or so as it then becomes about an 80mm with the 1.6x factor. Then I recommend the 70-200 2.8 IS for $1100.00 also by Canon. Both of these lenses will allow you to open up the aperture and blur the background which is a must for fashion photography.

The great thing is that these lenses will translate to camera body upgrades should you decide to drop bigger amounts of dough later on.

Should I wait for the Canon 550D?

Seven

Hey guys,

I really need help and fast. :(
I was considering of buying a canon 500d with a 70-200mm f/4 L glass lens and it was JUST under my budget... Now I read about canon announcing a newer model and I'm so confused.
19th feb I will be going on holiday to Dubai, which is a once in a lifetime thing for me. I really wish I could capture many many photos there but the 550d will only be available by the 24th!

I know that lenses are waaay more (and if not, the only) imporant thing and not the body. And that investing in a lens (especially an L lens) is better and bodies come and go...

I really appreciate any help/advice.

Best regards,

Canon Digital Rebel XSi 12.2 MP Digital SLR Camera with EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS Lens
http://www.amazon.com/dp/B0012YA85A?tag=dcmb-20

Review: My journey with DSLRs began back in 2003 with the original Digital Rebel. DSLRs changed my photography for the better like nothing else. Five years and some 25,000 shots later, it's still going strong. Along the way I upgraded to the Canon 30D, which is a fantastic camera as well. When the 40D was announced, I decided to wait until the 50D sometime in 2009, but wanted a newer backup/second body for my photography needs. So when the XSi/450D was announced, it sounded like a perfect fit for my needs.

I got it from Amazon.com three days ago, and have given it a pretty good workout since then, having shot about 650 shots under a variety of shooting conditions and with a number of different Canon and third-party lenses. The following are my impressions.

The build feels very good. The camera feels wonderfully light yet well built. I'm 6ft tall with average size hands, and the camera feels good in my hand. The battery grip, to me, defeats the purpose of having a small, light DSLR, so I opted for a Hakuba/Opteka grip (it's a plate that screws into the tripod socket that enables you to use the excellent Canon E1 hand strap with it) and I couldn't be happier. I'm not a fan of neck straps, so this works well for me (see the uploaded photo for the configuration).

Most of the menu buttons on the back feel different from the ones on the original Digital Rebel and the 30D; the XSi buttons feel more tactile and have a definite "click" to them when you press them. The exception are the Exposure Lock (*) and AF selector buttons, which have retained the deeper, softer feel of the older cameras. Just different, not better or worse, for me.

The LCD is now 3" with 230K pixels. The playback images look great, and probably because of the higher resolution of the sensor, there's a very slight delay when you zoom in to 10x while the image loads and displays properly. People coming from other cameras or brands might not even notice it--I only did so because of the difference between it and my two other Canon DSLRs (which have lower resolution sensors). The viewing angle of the LCD screen (how clearly you can see the screen from side and up and down) is excellent; you can still see the screen holding the camera almost straight up for an overhead shot (more on this later). I'd estimate the viewing angle is about 160-170 degrees both horizontally and vertically.

The Digital Rebel has a separate status screen above the main LCD screen, and the 30D had one on top of the camera, so I wasn't sure if I was going to like the big LCD acting as the status screen and no top screen. I'm happy to say that this arrangement works well, at least for me. The back screen makes it really easy to take all the settings at a glance. The viewfinder is much larger and brighter than that in the Digital Rebel. A humongously welcome feature for me is the always displayed ISO value in the viewfinder.

The camera is only 1/2 of the image quality equation, the other being the lenses being used. Coupled with my favorite lens, the Canon EF 70-200mm f/4 L telephoto lens, the XSi turns out fantastic images. The supplied kit lens is very light and compact for being an image stabilized lens, and turns out good performance. The IS is certainly very useful.

Two features that used to be missing from the Digital Rebels and found in the more expensive DSLRs are now featured in the XSi: spot-metering and flash exposure compensation (these may have been available in the previous Digital Rebel model, the XTi, as well). The inclusion of those two features make the camera a much more complete and compelling photographic tool. The timer function now has a custom mode, where it'll count down from 10 seconds then take a number of shots (specified by you) in succession. No more running back and forth to reset the timer after each shot! There's also the traditional 2-second timer.

Let's talk for a minute about sensor and the ISO values. XSi/450D has five ISO values you can choose: 100 (best image quality), 200, 400, 800, and 1600. Higher ISO increases the camera sensor's sensitivity to light, thus you can achieve faster shutter speeeds for a given lighting condition. However, the trade-off is that the sensor "noise" (think grain for film photography) increases with higher ISO, so you get a degraded image quality in return for less blurred photos from hand shakes (thanks to faster shutter speed). This may come in handy in situations where flash photography is not permitted, such as a museum or a concert or theater. HOWEVER, compared to point-and-shoot digital cameras, the larger sensors of DSLRs, including the XSi, means that even at ISO 800 and 1600 you get very usable images right out of the camera. Running the images shot at those ISO settings through any number of third-party noise reduction software will i

If youâre looking for a point & shoot, user friendly digital camera, I have to say, I like Canon. Nothing against other the other brands. I prefer Canon based on personal experience and their reputation.

Consider the Canon PowerShot models, the A630 or the A640. These compact models have helpful pre-set shooting modes that you choose for the particular picture situation you are about to shoot. Like: auto(matic), portrait, nighttime, landscape, indoor, snow, beach, kids & pets (subjects that wonât keep still), and more⦠You can also be creative with these models, where you can choose special FX settings as you are shooting a pictures and have the option to program/set your own manual setting, so check the specifications. You should bear in mind, with physical size of the camera, (subcompact/slim/flat vs. compact), you compromise features that are available on the compact/slightly larger models.

I own the Canon PowerShot A620. My favorite feature of this model is the vari-angle (flip and twist) display/LCD screen. It protects the screen when not in use, and helpful for odd angle shots. Especially if you want to take a picture of yourself, or yourself with others. Picture taking is instant! I have found lag time is not an issue, with this camera, compared to my first digital camera. They now have an updated version of my A620⦠the above mentioned A630 and A640. Here is a review and its features (keep scrolling to see the vari-angle screen), up close and personal:

Here is where I go to shop on-line for the best price for digital cameras. (Which I found to have considerable better prices than going locally to your nearest digital camera dealer). Just type in your camera model in the âsearch keywordâ: http://lowpricedigital.com/category.asp?master_category_Id=1000 Buy soon or check daily, for prices changes daily amongst merchants. Also check if the camera is being sold ânewâ or ârefurbishedâ.

If youâd rather buy from the store, check the usual places, Best Buy, Circuit City, Wal-Mart, Target, and camera stores. Even consider Office Max, Office Depot, CostCo/Samâs Club---any store with a camera department.

I hope you have better luck this time!

digital cameras....?

Q. I have been looking into buying a digital camera for the holiday seasons that are about to approach us. Now, which ones do you think are the best brand, quality, all of that stuff. I dont really care just a couple specifics: need to be able to see the pic on the screen, and not extremely costly. HELP!

How do you download pictures back onto a Canon Powershot digital camera?

Audrey

I have a Canon Powershot SD750 (Digital ELPH). I can download my pictures from my camera to my computer, but how do I download my pictures from my computer back to my camera?

Thanks.

Answer
Does this particular Canon model have internal memory?

Or are you asking if you can download pictures from your computer back onto your camera's SD card?

I believe if you click on your folder, that has the pictures you want to download back to SD card, then next choose 'copy folder' and you specify which drive (maybe F:) your SD card is inserted into that you want that folder's files copied into. Or click and drag, your contents into where you want it copied to.

Hope not too confusing.

how do I download pictures from my Canon digital camera?

Answer
You have three choices.

* use the software and USB cable that came with your camera.
* use the card reader on your computer
* buy a USB 2.0 card reader (about $10)

Most of use who have been using digital cameras for many years, use card readers to copy our image files from our memory cards to the computer.

Should I Get The Canon - PowerShot SX150 IS Black 14.1-Megapixel Digital Camera - Black?

hiiiiiiii

I am planning on making YouTube Videos and i was wondering if this would be a good camera to take video. I was looking for a camcorder but then i thought about looking for a camera because they are cheaper. If you guys find any good and cheap camcorders please feel free to recommend! Thanks

Answer
I have created youtube videos with the Canon SX130, which is the predecessor to the SX150.

If you don't need a full-time camcorder, the SX150 would probably be a good camera for you.

The only real advantage to camcorders these days is the longer time that they can shoot each individual video clip. But this is because the sensors are low megapixel count (most consumer grade camcorders are 3Mp or less), and they are optimized for this mode.

Fact is it does not take as much quality for video as still photos, and especially for youtube, low megapixel sensors work fairly well.

Is the Canon PowerShot SX150 IS 14.1 MP Digital Camera a good camera for film/photography?

nem2gz

How long can I film video on it for?
Does it take good quality videos?
Does it have an external mic jack?
If there is a better camera out there that's just as affordable, what is it?

Answer
Canon PowerShot SX150 the camera provides a lot of special shooting features that can be used not only for still photography, but also for the video recording. There's an "easy shooting" mode for those that want to pick up the camera and start shooting right away, allowing the camera to make all the decisions about ISO, white balance, focus, etc. There are scene and filter shooting modes that allow the photographer to select a style for their photos (monochrome, color accent, color replacement, miniature mode, macro, smile and face detection, beach and snow scenes, fireworks, etc.). For those that want more control over their photography, the camera does offer shooting modes in Manual, Program, Aperture and Shutter Priority.

If you have ever had any experience with any of these cameras or have heard anything about them at all, I would appreciate it if you could let me know! Also, which do you think would be the best choice? Or is there a better camera? My preferable price range is about $300. Thanks for your time!!

Answer
If it were my choice, I would personally go for the Canon SD750. Here are a few reasons why and how I arrived at this conclusion...

1) Memory cards- The Olympus and Fuji use xD memory cards, which are only used by those two companies. Because of this, xD cards not as fast or as widely available as the SD memory cards that are used in the Canon and Casio. As a result, you will likely have to buy another memory card when you buy another camera further down the road. Overall, I would eliminate the Olympus and Fuji based on that fact.

2) More video options- the Canon can record at several different video settings in terms of resolution and frames per second (fps), including a 60fps setting at the 320x240 resolution setting. This way, you can choose video settings that use less memory if you don't have much left or bump it up for more special videos.

3) LCD- The Canon offers a 3" LCD, larger than any of the other 3 cameras. When compared against the Casio, the Canon is a clear winner. The Canon has a 3" LCD with 230,000 pixels versus the Casio's 2.6" with 115,000 pixels. The Canon's LCD will be much sharper and better overall than the Casio due to a higher density of pixels on the LCD.

I noticed that your links are to Best Buy's website. Are you bound to buying from Best Buy, or would you be able to wait for an internet order to ship? If you can, I have a suggestion for you that I think would be a great deal for you. Link 1 is to a package deal offered by a reputable online camera dealer. It includes the Canon camera, 2 x 1GB memory cards (good for probably close to 300 images at full resolution), and a carrying pouch made for the camera. It retails for about $275, so with shipping you'll pay about $285-290, within your budget. I think this would be ideal for you and your trip. This package is available through Link 1.

The specifications that were used for this comparison are available in a side-by-side view in Link 2. Hope this helps, let me know if I can help any further.

Or - get a Nikon D40. The mode dial even offers a "Child" mode. They say, "Use for snapshots of children. Clothing and background details are vividly rendered while skin tones are given a soft natural finish. The camera [automatically] selects the focus area containing the closest subject."

http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/nikond40/

http://www.popphoto.com/cameras/3756/camera-test-nikon-d40.html
http://www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/d40/d40-recommendations.htm

You can get the D40 with the 18-55 kit lens at B&H Photo (available through Yahoo! Shopping or at 1-800-622-4987) for $550 (May 2007) and this is with TWO Lexar 1 GB cards. You can get the same kit with one Lexar Platinum (higher speed) card for $560.

If you are going to go with Canon, I will agree with KoKo and say that you ought to get the Rebel XTi, as long as you are taking the plunge. The XT with the "standard" 18-55 lens and a 2 GB memory card will cost you $630 and the XTi set up the same way will cost you $790.

Gee. The D40 doesn't look so bad next to those prices, does it? (haha)

Answer

All of the major brands are good. Choose a brand that appeals to you. Then you have to think about getting a spare battery, what size memory card, if you want an extended warranty, how much you can afford, what size zoom, if you want manual controls, the size of the camera, finding a reliable place to purchase it, and the list goes on and on and on.......

The first thing to realize is that almost any digital camera will take good pictures. If more people would read the manual more than once, they would be able to take better pictures. Usually, the person assumes it is the camera when it could be them not knowing exactly what to do. Just give yourself more photographic knowledge by doing more reading on the internet.

I really believe buying a camera is an individual choice.
The person needs to read alot of reviews on cameras so they can decide on the features that they really want and need.
Go to the store and hold them so you can see if they feel comfortable in your hands. If possible, take some pictures in the store to check the quality of the pictures.
I can only give a suggestion of what to look for in a new digital camera.
Good Luck

Answer
Here's a side-by-side comparison. I have not used the Sony, but have used a few Canon SD cameras (as well as several A-series...) and they are excellent cameras in their class.

You may have trouble finding the SD630 before long, but look for the SD750 to replace it. The SD630 is 6 MP instead of 7 MP, but it's also $75 cheaper!

The Sony has the advantage of image stabilization, but the lens is "slower" than the Canon's, so this consideration might just be a wash. Image stabilization is a good thing, though.

I am trying to find a 12 Mp digital camera, where it won't have a lot of features but can take good pictures, around $200-250 area.

a digital camera with auto-stability feature for those with a shakey hand would be a plus.

Answer
Clever marketing has led people to believe that "the more pixels the better". Unfortunately this is not always true. Visit shutterbug.com and do a Search for "pixel packing". The article was in the Nov. 2007 issue.

When more pixels are stuffed into a small sensor each pixel must be smaller and packed closer together. This isn't a problem until you use a higher ISO like 400 although some high pixel count digicams actually begin to lose image quality at ISO 200.

A quality camera from Panasonic or Canon or Sony or Nikon or Olympus or Sigma or Pentax with 6 to 8 megapixels will give you excellent image quality.

Canon Powershot or Sony Cybershot digital camera?

Kim32

I'm trying to decide between two digital cameras: the Canon Powershot SD1200 IS (about $230) and the Sony Cybershot DSC-T90/P (about $300). I mainly just want a camera to bring out with friends, take basic shots when I travel, etc. but I also need a great macro setting for photographing jewelry I sell online.

Is it worth the extra $70 to get that fabulous touch screen and extra megapixels, or is the Canon more than enough? Thanks!

Answer
Hi there,

Firstly I will just let you know that I am a major fan of both these brands.

Canon are market leaders and the Powershot SD1200IS is one of my favorite cameras. They come in a great range of fashionable colors, so if you are going to be using it when going out with friends you can be sure to impress with it.

The photo quality is very good also and for photographing items it would more than likely get the job done for you considering you had the lighting etc correct.

Sony also make very good cameras but between the two brands there is not much difference I would say. If anything with Sony you are just paying a premium for the brand name, however to some people that have trust in a brand like Sony they may be prepared to pay that bit extra.

Also not sure where you have seen these prices? I have seen these models cheaper elsewhere online.

Hope this has helped, all the best with your new camera.

Traveling to Eastern Europe : Digital Camera OR Disposable Camera?

SeanBetter

what is better
i hear that digital cameras mess up when they go through the Xray same thing for the film in Dispossibles
also would i have a higher likely hood of getting a digital camers stolen

Answer
Digital cameras are so much more feature packed and convenient, even with some risk of theft, I would bring a digital camera instead of disposables. Few tips and things to keep in mind:
- Get an inexpensive digital camera if you are worried about theft (e.g., Canon PowerShot A580).
- Get multiple smaller capacity memory cards (e.g., four 1 GB) in case the camera gets stolen.
- Get a pocketable ultra compact camera and keep it close (e.g., Canon PowerShot SD1100).
- Regarding airport security scanner, I have never experienced memory card failures.
- Bring an international power adapter for the charger or get a camera that uses standard AA or AAA batteries (e.g., Canon PowerShot A580, A590).

Which canon digital camera is the best?

Answer
It all depends on what kind of camera your looking for. are you looking for a low level compact camera or a high level compact camera. Or even an entry level dSLR.
low level compact camera:

1.The canon powershot a570 has 4x optical zoom with 7.1 megapixels. its a great low level camera since it has ois (optical image stabilizer) and costs around 200$
http://www.dpreview.com/news/0702/07022201canonsa560a570is.asp

2. the canon powershot sd850 which has 4x optical zoom with
8 megapixels and digic III noise reduction. For more info on this one look at:http://www.dpreview.com/news/0705/07050702canonsd850is.asp

High level Compact cameras:

1. The canon powershot sx100 is it has 10x optical zoom with 8 megapixels and face detection. Face detection automatcially puts the faces in the picture into perfect detail.
http://www.dpreview.com/news/0708/07082004canonsx100is.asp

2. The canon powershot s5 is has 12x optical zoom with 8 megapixels with image stabilizer to lessen the shake while your taking pictures.
http://www.dpreview.com/news/0705/07050703canons5is.asp

dSLRs:

1. The canon mark III has many interchangable lens. with 10 pictures a second The mark III is the best canon camera out there although i'd doubt you'd want to buy one they cost 6,000$ alone without a lens.

Answer
Check this more for the money camera. FUJIFILM - FinePix 10.0-Megapixel Digital.
Life time Warranty (Parts & Labor).

Wide-angle shooting, a 12x optical zoom and picture stabilization mode combine in this camera for exceptional shooting performance, even at a distance. Plentiful scene modes, autofocus and automatic white balance controls make this camera a snap to operate. You may be able to find it on the Internet for a lower price.

In new cameras, look for optical viewfinders (LCD invisible in bright sun) and check battery prices. High mega pixel settings take longer to process and may not be needed unless required for very large pictures or enlarging small parts of big pictures.

You may be able to view owners manuals at this link, but will need to Login. http://www.retrevo.com/s/digital+camera ...

what's a good digital camera to learn photography with?1?

Alicen1ndr

well i joined deviant art a while back and looking at all the photography there made me want to learn how. right now i have a mediocre camera but i don't like taking pix with it; it has a P and M mode but it was obviously designed for point-and-shoot purposes, and my dad got this amazing camera for christmas it's so great i'm not really sure what it's called but the strap says Canon EOS Digital. the features i like the most are the manual focus and zoom. the problem is i'm too young for a job and i want to get the camera by like september. so i calculated that if i make the purchase in september i will have roughly $280..that doesn't go far towards a camera :( but there's a small possibility that i can get another few hundred, but i'm really not sure. i could also maybe borrow half the money from my parents; i've done that before. so with the price range being between $300 and $650 dollars, what do you all reccommend? (ps i want it to be digital)
txx!!!

Can anyone give step by step instruction to download pictures from camera to computer?

vasusesha

Answer
How to download pictures from Digital Camera
Contents:

Downloading pictures from Camera
Cropping a picture
Attaching a picture to Email
Mom and Dadâs Canon (S200)

Downloading
1. First, start with the camera power off. Connect it to the computer via the USB cable.

2. Double Click on the "Canon ZoomBrowser" icon

3. Turn Camera On. Make sure itâs in download mode (triangle)

4. You will see a window, Here it is asking you what software you want to send the pictures from the camera to.
The window title is âIXY ⦠eventâ
Click on âCanon ZoomBrowser EXâ

5. Next, you will see a Window entitled âZoom Browser Automationâ
Here, you pick what you want ZoomBrowser to do with the pictures from the camera. The current setup is to automatically download the pictures. So, just click âStartâ

6. Zoombrowser EX is opened, and the pictures are downloaded.
All pictures are downloaded in a new folder with todayâs date

At this point you can safely erase the pictures from the camera, because they are now stored on your computer.

7. Turn the camera off at this point to save battery.

8. In ZoomBrowser EX, you can rename the folder it created to put the pictures in, by right-clicking on the folder name, and left-click âRename Folder.â Then type the new name for the folder over the old name.

To Crop a picture:
1. First, in ZoomBrowser EX, single-click on the picture to select it. A blue box will be around the picture.

2. You can crop the picture if you like. Double-click the picture or click the âView Imageâ button. Click a corner, then drag to another corner, and let the mouse go. Then click the âCropâ button.

3. Click the âSave Asâ round button beneath the picture. For âfilename,â Enter a different name from the original picture, if you want to save the original one. Then hit Enter, or click the âSaveâ button.

To attach a picture to email:
While the picture is selected in Zoombrowser EX, on the âInternetâ menu, click "Send Image(s) by E-mail."

Resizing a picture: If an image file is very large, it may take a long time for someone with dialup access to the Internet to receive the file.

If you don't want to resize the picture, click "Send image(s) without compression, Then click "Next," and skip to "Sending picture in email" below.
To resize the picture (change the resolution) to make it a smaller file:
a. In the next window, entitled âSelect Compression,â click on âResize and compress images into JPEG format.â Then click "Next"
b. In the next window, entitled âSelect Image Quality,â type a number for âResize Image Dimensions.â Pick a number less than 100% to make the picture smaller. For example, try 50%. Click the âCompressâ button. It will show how big the file is. For example, at 50% compression, a file that was original 457K was compressed to 107K. This is a reasonable size to send via email. The program recommends that files <300K are more convenient to send by email. (Your mileage may vary.) Play around with different % compressions if you like. Hit the âCompressâ button after each try. When you are happy with the size of the new file it will make, click the âNextâ button.

Sending picture in Email (after resizing, or if you skipped the resizing step above):

The next window is entitled "Send Email". If you want to see how the picture will look at this compression, click the "Preview" button.

Close the "Email Image Viewer Window" when you are finished previewing the picture. If you donât like it (perhaps you compressed it too much and itâs hard to see), back up (Hit the "Back" button) and try again.
When you are happy with how the picture looks,
Click the "Start e-mail program" radio button.
Then click the "Finish" button here in the "Send Email" window.

Your email program starts (yours is Eudora) and the picture is attached. Enter the address to send it to, a Subject line, and any other text you like. Hit the SEND button when you are finished.

I got a new canon a540 digital camera..ive downloaded all the software on the pc...now wen i connect the pc to the camera it does detect it but wen i open the software to put my pics on the comp it says there no camera connected....what shalll i do?
Windows says that the cam has installed but when i go to Camera and Scanner Wizard it says it doesnt detect any cams...
Also wen i was installing the cam it said that the software hasnt passed the windows logo test

Answer
When you say your PC detects your camera, what exactly is it doing? Is it popping up the dialogue box that asks what you want Windows to do? If so, just select ZoomBrowser (your Canon software) and click on OK. You should see an image transfer dialogue box open and start counting images as it downloads.

Assuming you're using Windows XP, this will assign your camera directly to your software so you should not have to open it yourself, the PC will do it automatically.

If this isn't your problem, then I would de-install the software, read the instruction booklet very carefully and then install the software as per the booklet.

If you have an older PC and you are not using Windows XP, you might want to upgrade. Your life will be a lot easier if you keep your O/S current.

Something else to consider is a memory card reader. These are cheap - under $50 - and will download your pics a lot faster and with less fuss than connecting your camera all the time. Your software will think it is the camera. You will have the added benefit of being able to easily reformat your memory card, as opposed to trying to do it through the camera's software. Canon engineers are very smart, but they did a poor job when it came to card management.
