Where can I find a Canon XSi pocket guide online?

canon digital camera buying guide image

sorccy

I just bought the Canon XSi digital camera. It comes with a nice little pocket guide, but since I bought my camera in Japan, it's in Japanese. I've already found the user manual through Canon's website, but they don't have the pocket guide. Anyone know where to find one online?

Answer
Their website has it in PDF format. http://www.canoneos.com

What kind of digital camera should I get?

Starry_Nit

I'm looking to buy a new digital camera because my old Polaroid one, which is just over a year old, is showing pink spots and it costs more to fix it than to buy a new camera. I want a good camera that will last me a while and will cost under 110 dollars. I'm not sure which brand and model to buy. If you guys have any recommendations, please list them here and as to why you would recommend it. Thanks a lot!
Any links would help as well. Thanks!

Answer
canon sd1100

All of the major brands are good. Choose a brand that appeals to you. Then you have to think about getting a spare battery, what size memory card, if you want an extended warranty, how much you can afford, what size zoom, if you want manual controls, the size of the camera, finding a reliable place to purchase it, and the list goes on and on and on.......

The first thing to realize is that almost any digital camera will take good pictures. If more people would read the manual more than once, they would be able to take better pictures. Usually, the person assumes it is the camera when it could be them not knowing exactly what to do. Just give yourself more photographic knowledge by doing more reading on the internet.

I really believe buying a camera is an individual choice.
The person needs to read alot of reviews on cameras so they can decide on the features that they really want and need.
Go to the store and hold them so you can see if they feel comfortable in your hands. If possible, take some pictures in the store to check the quality of the pictures.
I can only give a suggestion of what to look for in a new digital camera.
Good Luck

When did digital photography go mainstream for professional wedding photos?

CatH

When I got married in 2007 my wedding photographer did not use a digital camera. I did not think anything of it at the time. Other people we know who got married in 2010 and 2011 had digital photography at their weddings. So when did digital become the norm for professional photographers? Was our photographer stuck in the dark ages or was digital not really mainstream back then?

Answer
It was only in the spring of 2004 that a digital camera (the Canon 1D) that could hold it's own with film was released, the transition was initially slow from that year.

Most Pro photographers, myself included, stayed with the tried and tested film especially for weddings, you only get one chance with weddings, better to go with something you know works and what your geared up for.

When you were married in 2007 you would have had a less than 50/50 chance of getting a photographer that used digital. By 2011 digital had taken over virtually completely. By that time most Pro photographers would trust digital to deliver the quality of images they needed and cameras had moved on especially in the quality of their sensors. Sensor development is accelerating rapidly today.

Should I wait for Nikon D3200 release officially or buy the Canon 550D?

canon digital camera official website image

Marshall

Nikon D3200 rumors seems pretty real, and yet the photo has been release... But I love Canon because it's popular and the strap looks nice, I'm considering about Canon 600D but i can't afford it, so choosing 550D ...I know my thinking is a little bit weird LOL!!!

Answer
It is official - Nikon's D3200 has been announced. If you look at the Nikon website, you will now find it listed, with sample photos, specifications, and MSRP pricing. And the major retailers; Amazon, Adorama, B&H, etc. are all accepting pre-orders.

http://www.nikonusa.com/Nikon-Products/Product/Digital-SLR-Cameras/25492/D3200.html

The best estimate is that they will be shipping in 1-2 months.

So whether a D3200 is right for you or not depends on your time frame.

Yes, I agree that buying a camera by how the strap looks or how popular it is seems a bit unconventional (however, the Nikon D3100 is the best selling DSLR in the US).

Many photographers throw away the strap that comes with the camera anyway as they tend to be uncomfortable. Either an upgraded 3rd party strap or a Black Rapid style of sling strap is often the strap of choice. The camera manufacturers know this so they do not put a lot of effort into their straps.

Is it possible to download the camera required for this camera?

Bucephalus

Alright, long story short, this is the camera I am buying, however, it looks like a cd-rom is required to be able to use it. (Installing something before my computer will read the camera's images or some such thing); however, my computer's disc tray is broken and I can not currently afford to fix it. Would it be possible to download the required programs for this camera anywhere or even from the official website. I have looked, and admittedly, it's late and I may have missed something, but it didn't look as though I could download the required software. And yes I saw the drivers/software tab on it. Just nothing to actually DOWNLOAD the program.

http://www.usa.canon.com/cusa/consumer/products/cameras/digital_cameras/powershot_a4000_is_blue?color=Silver
Ha, just noticed the silliness of the title. I look like a moron. Please disregard that.
@Looney: If you had payed any attention, rather than skimming, I did say it was late at night, AND that I saw the software/download area, HOWEVER, there was no DOWNLOAD button.

"And yes I saw the drivers/software tab on it. Just nothing to actually DOWNLOAD the program."

Answer
firstly you wont need the bloatware to use your camera as you can use windows programs to both download the pics and view them from the camera and they are built in already.

Second, just get someone else (or the shop) to download the program and copy into a USB stick. Use you this to transfer all that you (dont) need to your PC.

Good luck

Can a digital camera lens be used on a film camera?

Luiz Pedro

I have a canon 50D and im thinking about purchasing a film camera for school. The lens on my canon is the standard one that came with it. Im thinking about buying a film canon SLR and just wanted to know if the lens from my 50D would work with any. And if it only works with particularly SLR's which ones.
Also if anyone has any recommendations on what film camera to get that would help too.

Answer
The lens that came with your Canon 50D is most likely an EF-S lens which means it cannot be used on a Canon AF 35mm film camera or Canon full-frame DSLR like the 5D or 1D. A Canon EF lens can be used on any Canon AF 35mm film camera or cropped sensor Canon DSLR or Canon full-frame DSLR.

Here is a listing of the Canon EOS Rebel AF 35mm film cameras from March of 1987 through Sept. of 2004: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Canon_EOS

Sarah

I am a college student and don't want to have to spend any more than is necessary. It is important for me to have a camera that takes really good pictures to save for the future. I have been reading reviews of cameras in all price ranges. Do you think that most digital cameras sold at walmart would fit this description? Does anyone have recomendations of great/excellent portable cameras that I could buyinexpensively new or used (like around $100, or even less)? Thank you!

Answer
Theoretically yes, all cameras within reason can take great photos. $100 is within that reason ($15 key chain is not). The problem comes when the general public is told the camera will take great pics for them and they don't recognize the situations that would trick that camera's abilities to do so.

ex-

Sunsets. The camera wants everything to be evenly lit, so the sunset comes out too bright.

Dark faces. If the sun is behind people they're faces come out too dark.

At night. Many cameras can take pictures at night with or without flash but there's a few things you need to know. Otherwise they come out blurry or so grainy you can't see anything.

And the list goes on. So yes, most cameras can take amazing-enough pics, if you take a weekend and give yourself a Youtube tutorial or take a book from the library. Know the situations where the camera simply can't get it right on it's own.

There are plenty of cameras at Walmart that are fine. Canon, Nikon or Sony are all fine. Samsung is less recommended but is not too bad. Olympus can have more muted colors but they do function well. Kodak is just bad. Everyday there's someone asking something about why their Kodak just stops working. Vivitar is garbage. Avoid it at all costs.

If you are talking about taking a class at school, you are most likely looking for a 35mm film camera. A whole different story.

Where can I get a digital camera repair in Philadelphia?

The adapter for my camera to the TV. I thought it wasn't working so I got a new one but I still could see the picture on the TV screen, just the sound. Now I know it's the place you plug the cord into. That needs to be repaired. I own a Canon ZR 60 Digital Camera. Can Radio Shack or something repair it? Any input would be helpful. Thanks!
There is a Walmart at Franklin Mills Mall. Maybe I can try them. Thanks!

I'm looking to purchase a Canon Camera at the end of the year but don't know which one to choose. What is the difference between all the different Canon cameras... Canon Rebel, Canon Ti, Canon Ti4, etc.? I have always loved taking pictures. I'm getting tired of my digital camera. I want to expand my photography and start taking really wonderful quality photos. What Canon camera do you suggest I get?

Answer
Fancy huh?

There is nothing fancy about a fully adjustable camera. The simply use a light meter to determine the proper exposure (balancing ISO, shutter speed and lens aperture). That is as simple as it gets.

Add to that, you have a choice of many different focal lengths which makes them more versatile than the really "fancy" P&S cameras the detect smiles, faces and friends faces.

If you think that a T1i and T4i are NOT digital cameras then you need to do more research.

Spend some time on these websites and see if any of the listed cameras fit your needs.

http://www.nikonusa.com/en/Nikon-Products/Digital-SLR-Cameras/index.page

http://www.usa.canon.com/cusa/consumer/products/cameras/slr_cameras

http://www.pentaximaging.com/dslr

http://store.sony.com/c/Alpha-DSLR-Cameras-And-Accessories/en/c/S_Digital_SLR_Cameras?SR=nav:electronics:cameras_camcorders:Alpha_dslr_cameras:shop_compare:ss

http://shop.panasonic.com/shop/cameras-and-camcorders-lumix-digital-cameras-interchangeable-lens-models?sc_mc=sem_bing_mc_lmx_8735_11152011

http://www.getolympus.com/us/en/digitalcameras.html?cat=11

After you have visited these sites and have taken notes listing the features of each camera you are interested in buying, visit this site to see how the sensors all perform.

http://www.dxomark.com/index.php/Cameras/Camera-Sensor-Ratings

And finally with your notes in hand, visit a proper camera shop and hold your top choices in your hands. You will get plenty of opinions here, but you really need to do the research yourself to know which camera system is best for you.

Now maybe the bad news.

Taking "really wonderful quality photos" has all to do with your skills, NOT the camera you buy.

You can produce the same boring snapshots on your "tired" digital camera as you can on a $43,000 Hasselblad digital camera unless you have the skills and understanding of the fundamentals of photography. That will take some formal training and time

Sounds like the "horse has already left the barn" on this one. But you might try calling Canon with the model number and serial number and find out if they will repair the camera in the future (you will pay for it-of course) if needed. video editing software for Canon XL2 video camera?

runningman

I am looking at buying a canon XL2 video camera, what video editing software do you recomend to use with this computer. I would like to edit the software on my PC with windows xp

Answer
Since the XL2 does standard definition DV, any video editor should be just fine - it depends how sophisticated you want to get. So... MovieMaker is bundled with Windows XP (SP2). If you want more sophisticated video editing capabilities, Sony Vegas and Adobe Premiere always float to the top.

Your bigger issue is getting the video into your computer. ALL miniDV tape based camcorders transfer video the same way. Your computer needs a firewire port. If it does not have one, hopefully it has an expansion slot so you can add one. You also need a firewire cable.

Firewire400, IEEE1394a, DV and i.LINK are all the same thing. USB won't work. USB-firewire adapter/converters won't work, either.

Connect the firewire cable to the DV port of the camcorder and the firewire port of the computer. Camcorder needs to be in "Play" or "VCR" mode. MovieMaker will capture the video.

Get the XL2's instruction manual at canon.com

best digital camera canon nikon image

Amy 31

Hey there! I am looking for a Canon or Nikon digital camera that records long, good quality movies with sound. Can you recommend?

Answer
I would get the Canon Powershot TX1. Most compact digital cameras shoot video at 640 x 480 but this one shoots at 1280 x 720. That's a huge difference. The sound is in CD quality. It can shoot nonstop up to 4GB (which is only 13 minutes as the highest setting).

What are the specifications I should focus on before purchasing a digital camera Incase of Sony /Nikon/Canon?

Praveen

I would like to purchase new digital camera Sony / Nikon / Canon; so could you please suggest me what are the key aspects I should inspect before I purchase like lenses type, optical zoom, Digital zoom and etc?

Answer
If you are looking for an adjustable camera, then it is important to choose a camera that can use the most variety of lenses and bodies .... this will give you the most flexibitliy as you build a system.

If you are looking for a P&S camera, then the Nikon and Canon cameras use the most common memory card .. the SD.

Look for a camera that has at least a 3x optical zoom (forget any reference to digital zoom .. ), has at least a 6MP sensor, and either a viewfinder or SI feature (both is better). If you an afford a camera that uses the state of the art Li-ion battery, so much the better.

I'm becoming quite interested in photography, and I'm considering buying a digital camera for my self, but I don't know which ones to buy. I'd like the camera to come in good colors, not be crazy expensive, be able to take video with sound as well, have a decent zoom (comes in more than 3 pt), and to take good quality pictures. Anyone know any good cameras?

Answer
To be honest.....it depends on what are your needs and what you're looking for. If your a casual shooter canon point and shoots are usually the safest bet. If your more serious and actually understand the fundementals of photography, you may want to consider something more advanced, like the Canon G9. It offers true manual control and unrivaled jpeg image quality among compact cameras. If money is no object and you're willing to carry the bulk of extra lens, then a slr is probalbly the camera for you. Among them, Canon and Nikon makes the best. And another concept often misunderstood among newbies- more megapixels DOES NOT mean better image quality. If you ever watched High-def movies (1920x1080) they only measure approx. 2.1 megapixels. So what the point of anything higher if you tv isn't even capable of displaying every single pixel? You'd be better off looking for a bigger and higher-quality sensor, which would offer better dynamic range and better high-iso performance. If you did not understand what the last half of my answer meant, I suggest that you stick with a compact point and shoot, or at least consider reading this: http://www.videojug.com/interview/dslr-vs-point-and-shoot-digital-cameras

What would be the best camera for an Interior Design student?

Maria S

I'm an interior design student and my classes are starting to demand that I have a camera. My assignments entail that I take pictures of building and their interiors at day and nighttime. On occasions I have to take pictures while I'm driving by buildings (so I'm guessing the camera needs to have image stabilization). Truth is I know nothing about cameras and need help deciding which one to buy. Since I'm only going to be using it for school, I think it doesn't (and can't) be to expensive.
So I need a camera that:
-Takes nice pictures at any time of the day/night.
-Has vibration reduction for image stability
-Is capable to take both great interior and exterior pictures.
-Does not go over $300
-I'd like to stick with either Canon or Nikon

I've looked at a few and have my eyes on these two:
(NIKON - Coolpix L820) http://www.bestbuy.com/site/NIKON---Coolpix-L820-16.0-Megapixel-Digital-Camera/8124434.p?skuId=8124434&id=1218864357822

Answer
Nikon COOLPIX P310 It's easy to use, including being easy to switch to close-up, flash, or higher/lower exposure level. The fast f1.8 lens is its best feature. It can handle low light situations, and it takes better close-ups than my Nikon SLR.

What is a good external flash for canon t1i?

Her

I just bought my first DSLR- a canon t1i. I like it so far, but I hate flashes on canons, they are a bright white that washes out whatever I am shooting. I try to refrain from flash usage if I can help it but there are certain times that it is just needed, especially with how dimly lit my house is. Are there any better external flashes that i can use that wouldnt give such a white out effect?

Answer
Best thing you can do is to buy an external flash that you can swivel the head of. This will allow you to bounce the light off of another surface and illuminating the subject. Your subjects usually get washed out from direct flash, which can be helped with diffusers. There are lots of flashes out there that will do this. For the T1i you need to look for a flash that uses TTL to meter the flash. This will ensure your camera, flash and lens all "talk" to each other to give you great results.
I recommend the Canon 430 EXII. However there are several offbrand flashes that will do just as well.
However the 430 EXII can be controlled in the menus of the T1i making it much easier to adjust the custom functions of the flash. You won't even have to touch the controls on the flash (most of the time)

Your camera has a 2 or 10 sec self-timer.

It has no interval timer ... those are found usually on the high-end DSLR cameras.

I have a question about different digital camera models?

Courtney C

I am looking to buy a Canon digital camera. I realize that there are many different models. I was wondering if the later models, or the ones with higher numbers (ex. SD1000 & SD850) are better than the others. Also, I am looking for very good image quality, reletivley small sized,at least 7 mega
pixels, and the option to enlarge pictures without them losing their quality. Which Canon model do you think I would be best off buying?

Answer
There is no definite rule for determining quality or features, especially from a company that makes so many models. The best thing to do is compare reviews of the models that have a feature set you are interested in. To see a fairly objective review of different camera models try some of the on line web sites.

I like Steve's Digicams because there are reviews of many cameras, it is pretty open minded (fair) and has a very consistent testing method. Each review is divided into sections and has one called Steve's Conclusion that summarizes the good & bad features of the camera.

The site is also very well organized so you can find cameras by mfg., no of MP or when it was reviewed and there are many links to additional information.

Hope this helps. Good luck!

Go to the store and hold them so you can see if they feel comfortable in your hands. If possible, take some pictures in the store to check the quality of the pictures.
I can only give a suggestion of what to look for in a new digital camera.
Good Luck

What's the max size SD Memory Card I can use with my Digital Camera?

kwong_chan

I recently purchased a Canon SD800is digital camera. This model is actually about a year old, but its still on the market and I just bought it new last month. I am currently using a 2GB SD memory card but would like to know what is the maximum size card this camera is compatible with. I think SD cards are up to 8GB now.

Answer
the manual tells you what size

I just want a digital camera that takes good quality photos. Ideas on camera brands as well if you like.

Answer
What kind of digital camera?

Your question sounds sort of like "what's a reasonable price to buy an airplane ticket? (without mentioning destination nor class).

There are really so many digital cameras and so many market segments, that it's hard to tell...

Let me try to lay out the lower few categories (as I take it you're not in to spend thousands)...

First, under $100 - that's really more toys than cameras, can't expect much from them.

$100-200 - Most basic entry level cameras, some offer advanced controls, but few, some don't.... If that's your budget, you can find a few decent ones here.

$200-350 - This is mid-range to advanced point and shoot cameras, usually offer somewhat better optics, some of them super zooms, better matrices, most of these have manual controls to some extent. They are often a bit bulkier and heavier.

350-450 - Advanced point & shoot. Larger, much better optics, still small but more advanced sensors, all manual controls available, often noticeable image quality improvements...

450 and up - dSLR's. That's really the best of the best. They are big, heavy and bulky, but they offer interchangeable lenses for unlimited optics options ($450 buys you one with a basic entry level lens, additional lenses cost anywhere from $100 to... well.. tens of thousands, but we're not talking about them). They offer excellent real through the lens optical viewfinders (more expensive ones have "live view", or view on LCD, as p&s, but it's really not necessary), full range of manual controls, very large and high quality matrices (up to 15 times bigger than in all categories above, and even the least expensive ones on this category have excellent matrices). And so much more. Caveats: again, they're big, and to take full advantage of these you need to learn about photography at least on some basic level.

Well, that's really it. Just a note for you - no camera takes good quality photographs. You, the photographer do. Don't deceive yourself, that if you get a more expensive camera, it will automatically produce this much better results. You need to know what you're doing behind the camera, from cheapest to most expensive models. A $120 p&s in professionals hands will probably yield better results than $2000 camera in the hands of someone who has no clue. So consider at least part of your money to spend on a good photography book.

Brands:
Nikon, Canon, Olympus, maybe Pentax. The others are not camera companies. They're there in the lucrative camera market to make some cash, but real quality is with the genuine camera companies, that have been on this market for decades...

Final suggestion:
If you noticed, when describing cameras, I spoke of optics and matrices, but never mentioned megapixels. It's not unintentionally. Don't even look at megapixel values when choosing a camera. A salesman may try pushing some more expensive models on you saying, it's more megapixels, so better quality. Don't trust the salesman! Any modern day camera with 6mp and up is good enough. It's not the pixels, it's the optics and matrix that add up to a good quality photo. And of course the photographers skill (that's #1 important factor).

LEM.

What kind of digital camera should I get?

I want to get a digital camera, and I want to know which kinds I should look at. I want something(somewhat) small(not so small that I'll lose it in a minute). It shouldn't be too expensive ($200 is near the top of what I'm willing to pay). And I want something that is easy to use.
It would be used for taking pictures of the kids I babysit for, and of my friends. I would delete a few pics, email most, and print a few.

Answer
I've been a camera nut for 40 years, and have all kinds. Most people overbuy on digital cameras, thinking the more megapixels, the better. The truth is , if you only want to keep pics on your computer and make standard size prints, a 1.3mp cam ( no longer avail) will look as good as a 6mp cam on the computer screen or print. However, the higher the mp's the higher the resolution. 3.2mp are almost extinct, so I'd go for a 4 or 5mp camera, these will easily be in the $100-$170 price range. With 5mp, you can blow up prints to like 16 x20 I think, which you'll never do, probably 8x10 at most. And remember the higher the megapixels, the more memory needed for each pic you take and bigger drain on batteries, which digital cams eat. So don't buy bigger than you need. My current recommendation , which I just bought for myself a few weeks ago, is a compact FE-115 Olympus...small with easy to use controls and several shooting modes as night scenes, portrait, and anti shake mode which is important. It also has a great macro and supermacro mode where you can get as close as like an inch. It's a lot of camera for the money with big easy controls for not so tiny fingers. The screen is smaller than many but high resolution for clear images. I paid $149 at circuit city and got a 512MB free memory card worth $50, so really paid only $100 for a great cam. Been very happy with the results. With this size card, I can take about 375 pics I believe in the high quality mode. But be sure to buy the rechargeable batteries for any camera you choose ,or you'll be changing AAs about every 15 minutes. P.S. Canon and Sony also make great products, so try to stick with these 3 brands.

I plugged camera into computer (Windows 7 HP G61) but there is no driver that I can find to allow it to transfer pictures. I bought the camera second hand and it works great but I do not have the software cd to load onto my laptop and I can't find a compatible driver online for download. Any help would be great

Answer
You don't need a driver. Most of us regulars here use and recommend external card readers for upload.
Readers aren't expensive and are available where ever cameras are sold. I've been using them for years and don't even have software for any of my 4 digital cameras loaded because I don't need to.

Windows 7 driver installation for Canon EOS Digital Software?

I have tried several times to install the software for my Canon EOS 10D since Windows 7 does not recognize the drivers that came with the disk of my Cannon EOS Digital Camera. But when I plugged in the USB cable from my Camera to import the images, Windows opened instead of the Canon program for importing the RAW images. The Canon File Viewer Utility can not find the images which can be viewed within windows. Can anyone help?

Answer
You should install the software with privilege of Administrator. Check this setting and try to install the software as you logged in as an Administrator. If you are sure that you have the Administrator privilege, connect your camera to the computer and wait for the Windows detect the device and install the driver for your camera. And then visit Canon website to find out every available update (such as firmware, and software updates) for your EOS 10D, and install them. After the installation finish, restart your computer. There is also one thing you can try is to change the setting of Communication in your cameraâs menu, from Normal to PTP. Hope this helps.

Canon EOS digital Rebel XSi transferrign to pc via interface wont work?

Noo N

I plug the cam into pc and turn it on i install the software on the disk and it come sup with busy for a few seconds then it goes away, as if it wasnt hooked up like normal and it wont let me transfer images?

Answer
Usually its best to first Install the CD..then attach the Camera via a USB-cable..your Software should ask if your Camera is connected or not..
..........
Or try the Opposite..the CANON Drivers should be pre-installed on your OS(XP/Vista)..so first attach the camera and HIT the PWR. Button to turn the camera ON..your PC should recognize the device and show a Product Name..(maybe not a product name)..
..........
Then add the CD-content..and register your product(s).

I just recently bought a Canon Powershot A570IS and I have a Kodak Easyshare as well but I have rechargable Kodak batteries....Would those type of batties work for my new camera or do I have to get new rechargable batteries??

Also I have not received my camera yet so I can't check to see if they work....

Answer
If they are AA NiMH, yes you can. If they are Li-ion's, no. All those are proprietary batteries usually specific to the model as well as the brand camera.

How long should my new video camera batter last?

monicanena

Just bought a Canon Vixia and the battery lasted less than an hour. Is this normal? Doesn't seem right.
Oops, I mean "battery" of course.

Answer
the factory usually sizes a battery to last from 1 to 2 hours of continuous video. less than an hour sounds like there is a problem with the battery or the charger, or else there was a lot of standby time between takes that you are not counting.
