Canon vs Nikon digital cameras?

iRideOn

I'm just getting into photography and I'd really like to get my own camera (I'm currently using my aunt's). Two good beginner cameras I've heard about are the Canon EOS Rebel T3 and the Nikon 3000. Since I don't know a lot of about the technicalities, I figured I'd ask around and see what other people's opinions on the two were. If possible, I'd like it if someone could compare features in words I could understand (Like focus/picture quality/etc.) I'd also like to know what one would be better for taking pictures of horse events (like barrel racing, gaming, other speed events and outside on the trails) and taking videos in a dusty arena.

Thanks so much!

Answer
Hi,

T3 competes with D3100 from Nikon.
XS competes with D3000.

Focus really depends on the lens, but they're all great. It's not like with those little cameras where it focuses for a few seconds and is blurry. Picture quality is the same.

No camera is made for horse events, but you're gonna have to use the camera in manual mode to get the best out of it in such events. Videos, well, it has nothing to do with dust.

D3100 is currently the best price/performance with T3 being just a little bit below, due to lower price.

What is the best Canon digital camera?

jskaliski

I'm a 15-year-old girl and I've gone through two cameras in the past few years. I need one that will last long and will take good pictures. Not just average pictures. I'd prefer a chargeable battery, but I can deal others. Please help!

Answer
I would recommend that you get a Canon XS DSLR.It is a( Digitial Single Lens Reflex ) camera and sales for $549.00 up to $599.00. You may have to request an advance in your allowance. After you become proficient in using it, you can slowly add different lens to obtain full use of the camera. Most low cost point and shoot cameras do not offer the option of taking pictures in B&W. You would have to convert those color pictures with the software provided with the camera. However, with the Canon you can set it to take B&W pictures. I used a 300mm lens on my Canon and obtained some very awesome pictures of the moon. Picture quality is great and the craters are in great detail. Canon has been my only choice in photography due to the quality of taking pictures with those cameras. The only real filters you should invest in will be (1) UV (ultra violet) filter (primarly to protect the lens. (2) Polarizer filter (to take pictures through glass and aquariums (keeps glass from glaring). Good luck.

Any reccomended digital cameras that have a very good camcorder function?

ralphnfifi

Looking for one that will take an hour or two worth of decent video too. Thanks anyone.

Answer
Canon Powershot S2 IS. Highly recommended camera (by Consumer Reports) and I've used it to video record from time to time with good results (example, recorded several minutes at the end of the basketball game between George Mason and UConn in the NCAA tourny from second level. Up to 40X zoom, so you can get a variety of views, and horizontal stabilization keeps things fairly clear even at magnification). Length of video would depend on how much memory you put in. Probably want at least a 1G card for the amount of time you're talking about.

Canon digital camera IX US 950IS displays "lens error".?

Saras

I have a Canon digital camera IS. While cleaning the camera I pressed the on/off button & get a message "lens error , restart camera". The lens doesn't close now. Have I messed up with my camera? Any help?

Answer
Here are some troubleshooting steps that you can try that may (or may not) correct your problem. They only seem to work for less than 40% of the lens errors, but if the camera is out of warranty (or repair cost approaches that of the camera), they're worth that try. Some of the later steps do involve some risk to the camera, so carefully weigh your options before deciding to conduct them:

Price not a factor.

Answer
Since you didn't elaborate (other than to say that price is not a factor), I have no clue what type of photography you do/plan to do.

For example, if you shoot sports, you want a fast focus and high frame rate. For that, I'd recommend the Canon 1DMkIII. 10Mpixel, Canon's 1-series autofocus, 10 frames per second, ability to record to two cards (SD and CF) simultaneously, and built like a tank. Around $4500, no lenses.

If you shoot weddings, I'd recommend either of Canon's full-frame cameras: a Canon 5D ($2200) which is smaller, lighter, and with 12+ Mpixel, fantastic, or Canon 1DsMkII (or the new MkIII at $8000) which has Canon's 1-series autofocus, 16.7 Mpixel (or 22+ Mpixel for the Mark III), and absolutely fantastic. Lenses are not included with any of these.

If you shoot magazine spreads, either the Canon 1DsMkII (or MkIII) or, if price is really not an object, the Hasselblad H3D-39: 39 Mpixel, medium format, best-of-the-best camera for $30,000. Yes, $30k. And, no, that doesn't include any lenses.

However, the camera isn't the only thing that makes fantastic photographs. Your lens choice and quality have big, BIG, BIG, effects on quality.

Oh, and so does the photographer. Put the H3D Hassy is a random Joe's hand, and he will generate terrible photographs. Sure, they'd be high-quality crap, but crap none the less.

Can I recommend posting this question again with more insight as to what you want to photograph?

whats the best digital slr camera that shoots 9fps or more for under $2000?

jesh d

Answer
There doesn't exist one in your price range.

In fact, the only DSLR I know of that can do this at all is the new Canon 1D MKIII at around $4500. It can shoot at 10 fps.

You can pick up an older used Canon 1D with a 4.15mp sensor for around $1000 that can go at 8 fps, but I think that this is the closest you're going to come in your price for a digital camera.

If, however, you're willing to get a film camera, a Canon EOS-1n RS would fit the bill for $500 or less used. Basically, it's an EOS-1n with a non-moving pellicle mirror and a few other modifications that allow it to run at 10fps.

Have you considered a dSLR

Something like the Nikon D3100 goes for 27k, with the 18-55mm kit lens included

It can do 1920x1080 video at 24 fps
Also checkout the Canon EOS 1100D, minus part is it can only do 1280x720 @ 30 fps
And if videos are a priority with you, the Sony SLT-A37 is the clear winner with 1920x1080 video at 60 fps

Do some reading and familiarize yourself
A dSLR is the ultimate photography tool

Ultimate selection you need to make, go to your local camera stores and handle the ones you shortlist

best canon compact digital camera? for non professional use?

xclusively

Answer
Canon g12 and Canon s95 are top compact cameras from Canon. Both have same image sensor, hence the same image quality, but g12 has more dials on the top and a larger lens, so it's not that compact actually, it's more of a bridge camera. But s95 is a real high end compact camera.
Other top cameras comparable to Canon s95 are Lumix LX5 and Olympus XZ-1

what is the best canon digital camera?

Q.

Answer
Yeah, it is important to set a budget for how much you are looking to spend on a digital camera. Canon digital cameras range in price from a few hundred dollars to well over a few thousand dollars. The Canon EOS-7D is a phenomenal camera, http://www.digitalimaginghq.com/canon-eos-7d-digital-slr-camera-with-lens.html A very good friend of mine is a wedding photographer and she swears by her Canon camera. I guess it could be because her business depends on it, but I can attest to the fact that her camera produces beautiful shots! Hope this helps and happy camera shopping! :)

Canon digital camera- Battery?

daeijan

do we have to care about the "mAh" of the battries that we use for a digital camera like Canon S3 IS?
I just want to know that is "3800 mAh" good for the digital camera or not?

Answer
Frankly, I would be highly suspicious of a NiMH 3800mAh rechargeable battery.
I did a search for them and all I could find were Sony 3800mAh...from India, so I would doubt their authenticity.
As far as I know, Sony only make up to 2700mAh rechargeable batteries.
If you stick with 2500-2700mAh batteries you will be fine. (this allows up to 550 shots).

Just don't buy them from Ebay, India.

Where can i buy camera batteries?

Bre

My canon rebel xt doesn't work and i was suggested to buy another battery. It says 8.1v on it, but i was told it's 1.5v? I'm talking about the little battery. Where can I buy these from?

Answer
You want the Canon NB-2LH rechargable battery. Do NOT buy third party batteries, if you do you are putting your camera at a great risk of being fried. Even if you got a third party battery that worked it's life would be absolutely nothing in comparison to the Canon battery.

You can buy the Canon battery at any camera store or online from places like Amazon, Adorama, B&H etc.

Are you sure the battery is what's wrong with the camera? Have you tried recharging the battery? I'd recommend taking it to your nearest reputable camera shop and getting one of their technicians to check it out or bring it to your nearest Canon Pro Centre. The camera itself could be dead, you'd have to call Canon to inquire about a fix then.

I have a PowerShot A40 Canon digital camera, and I need a driver for Windows 7.?

Golden Are

I got the camera used, so I have no instalation CD. And Its my only digital camera, and I need to get the driver...

Answer
Canon does not make Windows 7 drivers for the A40. Neither does Microsoft. It is too old, circa 2002, and Canon (like everyone else) provide poor support for equipment more than 3 or 4 years old.

I recommend you follow fhotoace's suggestion and use a card reader. Its has other advantages over directly downloading from the camera, including greater speed, and less chance of loosing data. Be sure any reader you buy works with Compact Flash Type 1, its the type of media your camera uses. Most multi-card readers will do so.

digital cameras....?

Q. I have been looking into buying a digital camera for the holiday seasons that are about to approach us. Now, which ones do you think are the best brand, quality, all of that stuff. I dont really care just a couple specifics: need to be able to see the pic on the screen, and not extremely costly. HELP!

Answer
Consumer Reports for November 2006 has ranked the Canon Powershot A620 as the best compact digital camera. It is becoming almost a legend for longevity at the top of various consumer lists. It looks like this model has been replaced by the A630, which I would expect to be just as popular. The A640 appears quite similar and shares the "600" series numbering, so I guess it's just another upgraded version of the now-classic A620. It looks pretty much the same except for baing a 10 MP camera. The continuous drive is a little slower, but the files are larger, so that's no surprise. I own a few Nikon DSLR's and I'd buy the Canon A630 or A640 for myself.

With this camera, you will find the memory card is a cute little token of thanks from Canon, but not much more. Buy a 1 GB Sandisk Ultra II or Extreme III card. You will NEED the increased capacity and write speed to fully realize the benefits of your camera.

http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/compare_post.asp?method=sidebyside&cameras=canon_a620%2Ccanon_a630%2Ccanon_a640&show=all

If you want to trim the budget a little, the Canon Powershot A430, A530 or A540, are all great choices. You will still need a decent memory card as discussed above, though.

What do you think about the Canon Powershot SD600 Digital Camera?

star_fire2

I'm going to get a new camera (old one's not working) and I want a really good one that I'll get my money's worth out of and be able to take great shots, even videos, just for everyday things as well as events. I found out about this one and reviews made it sound great, but I'm just getting backup opinions before I decide to buy it. I even found a site to get it for $160 instead of $400. So if you could rate it 1-10 and say why, or just give comments, that'd be great.

Answer
Canon's SD models are excellent ultra compact cameras, and the SD600 was a very popular model about...1 1/2 years ago.

It's a very good little camera but, you might also want to consider a newer model. Maybe the SD1000, which features the latest Digic III processor (which means the camera will be faster and image quality is better). It also has a higher res. LCD and other improved features.
You would need to buy a high speed SD card for optimum camera performance.
The camera is available for just over US$200 (online)...which is not much extra to pay for newer technology.

But, if you are not prepared to pay extra, then the SD600 is a fine little camera. Just make sure you buy a fast SD card (Sandisk Ultra II or the faster, Extreme III). 1-2GB is a good minimum, which will provide plenty of storage for photos/videos. Make sure your photo quality is set to...Superfine/Large..and your movies, 640x480 at 30fps.

good luck...

Good Canon digital camera?

I already have the zoom and standard lens from my rebel g camera which I assume would be interchangeable with a digitial camera??? so am wondering what a good digital camera model would be (also Canon) that would give professional type results. I need high pixels so that I can submit photos to a professional stock photo site.

Answer
The previous poster's recommendation would be good if you did not need a digital SLR, but you will need one if you want to use those lenses. To answer your first question, you will be able to use them as long as they are EF mount lenses. You can tell by looking on the lens box most of the time.

Again, to use your lenses, you will need a digital SLR. Canon offers several high megapixel options at varying price points. Depending on your definition of "high megapixels", here are some recommendations. Let's just say you need 10 megapixels or higher.

There is a digital SLR available from Canon at every level (entry level, prosumer, and professional) that is 10 megapixels or higher.

10 megapixels: 400D ($800), 40D ($1200), 1DMarkIII ($4500)
12 megapixels: 5D ($2600)
16 megapixels: 1Ds Mark II ($7000)
22 megapixels: 1Ds Mark III ($8000, ships in October)

If these are all out of your price range, you may have to give up lens interchanging capability for a conventional digital point and shoot. The A640 (10mp) and Powershot G9 would be worth looking at, too.

I need suggestions regarding canon digital camera G9 before I buy it?

papaalaazi

Answer
It's a capable camera, allowing images to be captured in RAW format and its 12.1 megapixels are certainly more than adequate. It allows ISO to be changed from a dial on the top and its retro look is sort of cool- like a rangefinder. One knock on it is that the LCD screen doesn't rotate as the older G series cameras do. It is a great, but pricey camera for those times when it is inconvenient to take a dSLR. It is also compatible with the very capable Canon external flashes, though the combination of an external flash and smaller camera body is a bit awkward.

out of sony, nikon and canon, which is the best for a digicam?

v j

i want answers frm amateur n professional photographers frm india preferably.if there s a better company please tell me. i'm more interested in the quality of pics and durability rather than a stylish digicam.

Answer
Since you are looking for quality of pictures, I will point you towards the SLR's. They are head and shoulders above the point and shoot cameras for quality of pictures. In the pronsumer-level market, I favor the Nikon D80.

The February 2007 issue of Popular Photography has an article where they compared the top 10 MP DSLR's. I took the scores and ranked the cameras similar to the way Formula 1 gives championship points. I just gave 5 for 1st place down to 1 for last place, splitting the difference when cameras tied in their catagories.

They evaluated Image Quality (giving this twice as much weight as anything else), Ease of Use, Control, and System Flexibility.

The final order and my scores are:

Nikon D80 - 17.5 points
- BEST in Image Quality, Control and System Flexibility
Canon Rebel XTi (400D) - 13.5 points
- Tied for best in System Flexibility
Pentax K10D - 11 points
- Tied for best in Ease of Use
Samsung GX10 - 11 points
- Tied for best in Ease of Use
Sony Alpha 100 - 7 points
- LAST in Image Quality, Ease of Use and System Flexibility."

Then again, this is the same magazine that put the Sony Alpha 100 dead last in this comparison named it the camera of the year in the previous issue! (In a follow-up to this seeming error, Pop Photo published the explanation that only the D80 and the Sony had been tested by the end-of-year deadline for choosing the Camera of the Year. Sony won on the strength of low price and built-in image stabilization. The other 3 that beat Sony in shoot-out were not tested until after the Camera of the Year was selected, because they were not yet available.)

Go to the original question and read the responses for more opinions.
http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=AiG00eHyd0oq5b.X7J.jiULzy6IX?qid=20070113133139AAHWJY0

If you want to get the "best" for the real world, consider the Nikon D200 or Canon 30D if you can afford it. For about $300-500 less, look at the results of the recent PopPhoto test and choose from that list according to your taste.

Personally, I use a Nikon D200 and would recommend it without hesitation to someone who has some knowledge of photography. For someone who wants the "best," but is starting with somewhat of an "entry level" knowledge base, I'd suggest the Nikon D80.

There are people out there who will state their preference for the Canon cameras and I will not argue with them. The Canon 30D and 400D are excellent cameras as well.

You would have to visit a camera store or camera department and pick them up and see what you think.

This review is now available online at:

http://www.popphoto.com/cameras/3569/10mp-dslr-shootout.html

Here's another reference from outside the photographic press. Consumer reports compared the Nikon D80, Canon Rebel XTi and Sony Alpha. Personally, I'd say that the Nikon came out on top here, also. It beats the Sony in "noise-free ISO" with an acceptable rating at ISO 1600 (kind of optimistic, I think...) compared to the Sony's ISO 400. It beats the Canon (in my opinion) by having a spot meter that the Canon does not offer.

http://www.consumerreports.org/cro/electronics-computers/news-electronics-computers/november-2006/shootout-10-megapixel-digital-slr-cameras-11-06/overview/0611_digital-slr-shoot-out.htm

Here's another comparison of interest:

http://www.digitalcamerainfo.com/content/Canon-Rebel-XTi-vs-Nikon-D80-vs-Sony-Alpha-A100-Head-to-Head-to-Head-Digital-Camera-Review-.htm
[Note the navigation menu near the top of the review]

The next thing to consider is what lens to start with and where you go from there. If you are new to this, I'd say to just get the "kit" lens, which seems to be the 18-135 lens for the D80, and get started. Once you know where you really want to go with your photography, Nikon has an almost unlimited family of lenses to choose from.

which camera from costco?

k P

right now this very moment if you take a look at costco's site...which camera is work buying like for example i heard that canon is the best but which one? kodak? which model is worth it? I wanted to give it as a present to india(so the dimensions, weight, etc should be taken into consideration) ... im willing to spent up to 200-250$. becuase i still have to pay for the shipping and packing etc.
thank you :)

Answer
People so often ask: "Which one is a good camera to buy?"
Here is my 10 cents on the subject:

Point & Shoot cameras are wonderfully handy because of their small size.
When light conditions are ideal, they even take really nice photos - all of them do.

However, they all DO have limitations - they don't do very well in low light situations (i.e. noisy photos, hard to avoid blur, etc). The little onboard flash is very harsh at close range, and doesn't reach very far.
Many of them have no manual functions, so you are limited to only very basic photos, you can't compensate for unusual situations, or do many fun "tricks" and special effects.
P&S's also suffer from frustrating shutterlag and many of them chew through batteries rather quickly.

However, if you're ok with all those limitations, then go ahead and pick one, most of them (the same type and same price range) are rather similar. Personally I would pick either a Canon or a Nikon, and would certainly stay away from Kodak.

A higher end P&S will give you more manual options and better quality. Many of those even give you the option of adding a proper flash (which makes a big difference to your flash photos).

Don't worry too much about megapixelsâ¦. there is a limit to how many pixels you can squash into a tiny P&S sensor before you actually LOSE quality rather than gain it.
Don't worry about digital zoom, in fact, don't EVER use it. It simply crops away pixels, i.e. destroys information. The only real zoom is optical.

Decide which features are important to you, and look for cameras that have that feature.
Then go compare a few models on www.dpreview.com .

The very best thing you can do for your success is to borrow some books and learn about photography. A bit of knowledge will make a much bigger difference to your photos than your choice of P&S camera can.

For what it's worth - if I was in the market for a P&S camera right now, my choice would be a Canon Powershot SX10 IS http://www.usa.canon.com/consumer/controller?act=ModelInfoAct&fcategoryid=144&modelid=17630

Suggestions for a digital camera?

Laina <3

Right now i have a kodak easy share v803. it takes beautiful pictures but the time it takes to take the picture is soooo delayed, so i think its time for a newer camera. I would like some of the same features,
8.0 megapixels
3x zoom
or better

anyone know some good cameras? reasonably priced for an amateur photographer

Mahalo! (thanks)

Answer
Ku-MASTAAAAAA...
I recommend to anyone seriously contemplating the purchase of a new digital SLR camera to consider these two primary questions:
1. How much money do you have to spend???? $500.? $800.? $1,500.?
2. What level of photography do you aspire to "progress to" in the coming years ? (i.e. basic beginner, intermediate, or professional/business use).
For most beginners to intermediates I usually suggest one of these two manufacturers: Canon vs Nikon

1. Canon EOS Rebel model XSi. (Also known as the Canon 450D in Britain) The "kit" package comes with an 18-55mm zoom lens. The camera has pop-up flash, 12.2 Megapixels, and shutter speeds up to 1/4000th, 100-1,600 ISO sensitivity, 7 auto exposure Scene modes, PLUS Shutter Priority, Aperture Priority and Programmed Exposure Modes and Manual. It also has a 3 inch LCD screen, 3.5 frames continuous per second max., 9 point AF system, Live View Functioning and the ability to record photos in 3, 6 or 12 Megapixels PLUS numerous other great features found only on more expensive cameras. Wal-Mart is also selling them now for about $799. Sam's Club also has them for $729. I also think that Amazon dot com has them for around $650. Hereâs some more info about this FANTASTIC camera: http://www.imaging-resource.com/PRODS/XSI/XSIA.HTM#

I bought one of these 6 months ago and use it as my "back up" camera. I absolutely love it. I have gotten some fantastic photos with it and cannot praise it enough. I routinely enlarge my photos to make 8x10's and 11x14 size enlargements with no noticeable distortion or loss of detail in the pictures.
Another excellent choice from Canon includes the Rebel XS (also known as the EOS 1000D) which is a 10 megapixel camera which comes with the 18-55mm lens. It sells for around $550-600. US Dollars. http://www.imaging-resource.com/PRODS/XS/XSA.HTM

2. Nikon D-90: If you prefer to use Nikon equipment I strongly recommend the Nikon D-90 which has 12.3 Megapixels, 3 inch monitor with Live View, 200-3,200 ISO sensitivity, 11 point AF system with Face Priority, 4.5 frames per second in continuous mode, 5 advanced Scene modes for auto exposure plus Shutter Priority, Aperture Priority, Programmed Auto plus Manual. The D-90 sells for around $900-950. (Body ONLY. The 18-55mm lens cost an additional $150.-175.) Typically, Nikon equipment is slightly more expensive than Canon equipment, but (having owned both Nikon and Canon cameras), I have seldom noticed BETTER quality results using Nikon equipment. Hereâs some more info about this Nikon: http://www.imaging-resource.com/PRODS/D90/D90A.HTM
Another great choice is the 10.2 megapixel Nikon D-60 kit ($649) which also comes with the 18-55mm lens. All of these Nikon's can be found at Best Buy or Amazon dot com for a very low price. To learn more about this Nikon check this site out: http://www.imaging-resource.com/PRODS/ND60/ND60A.HTM

If you are convinced that Nikon is the way to go, but donât have as much money to spend, there are several other models to consider. You might prefer the 6.1 megapixel Nikon D-40 ($499) kit that comes with the 18-55mm lens. To learn more this Nikon camera check this site out: http://www.imaging-resource.com/PRODS/ND40/ND40A.HTM

These selections are probably the best choices for any beginner to intermediate skill level, offering the most lenses and other accessories, dealers and places to purchase.

I strongly recommend that ALL beginners buy a good book on digital photography AND take a class or two from a Vocational school or Community Education Center in your area.
You can learn more about the technical specifications of each of these two cameras at these websites:

Need to buy a Digital Camera .. nothing fancy though..!?

NoFeat

I need to buy a good digital camera - for say 4000 rupees. I do not want anything fancy, just want it for general usage. Any recommendations?

Answer
Just saw this Canon A590IS camera at Best Buy and Radio Shack. Think it is a great camera and a best buy. It has a viewfinder, optical image stabilizer, auto focus, and uses NiMH rechargeable batteries.
http://www.imaging-resource.com/PRODS/A590IS/A590ISA.HTM ...
http://bountii.com/deal-1523871-canon-powershot-8-0-megapixel.html ...

For expanded wide angle or telephoto capabilities, the A590 IS is compatible with Canon's accessory lens adapters: A small button next to the lens bezel is actually a latch; press it and you can remove the bezel ring, exposing a bayonet mount for accessory lenses. Canon offers the WC-DC52 0.7x wide-angle lens, the TC-DC52A telephoto lens, the 250D 52mm closeup lens separately, along with the LA-DC52G adapter to mount them on the camera. (Note that the wide, tele, and macro lenses all need the LA-DC52G adapter to mount them to the camera. The lenses won't work by themselves.)

There is no one particular place to get great buys, but you may see something above that really helps you find the best buy. Click on the second link in the information above for an example then search for your camera of choice at the upper left. Camera prices at this link change often.

This could be the best slim line camera with a viewfinder. It's PINK!
http://shopping.yahoo.com/p:Sony%20Cyber-shot%20DSC-W150%2FR%20Digital%20Camera:1995337750;_ylc=X3oDMTB0bjZzaWNuBF9TAzk2NjMyOTA3BHNlYwNmZWVkBHNsawNlbGVj ...
http://www.digitalcamerareview.com/default.asp?newsID=3462&review=sony+cybershot+w150 ...

In new cameras, look for a viewfinder (LCD invisible in bright sun), optical (not CCD) image stabilizer, and check battery prices. High mega pixel settings take longer to process and may not be needed unless required for very large pictures. Maximum print size for a 3 mega pixel setting is 8 x 10 inches. Click links below for more details.
http://www.kodak.com/eknec/PageQuerier.jhtml?pq-path=398&pq-locale=en_US&_requestid=2039 ...
http://www.kenrockwell.com/tech/mpmyth.htm ...

CAUTION Do not overcharge! Batteries can be damaged. Use an automatic two or more hour Energizer Compact smart charger with temperature monitor, trickle charge technology, and safety timer ($9.76) at Walmart. Use pre-charged 2000mAh Duracell ($12.97) or RayOVac ($5.97) batteries (hold charge one year) and a full cycle charge. To preserve battery charge, use the viewfinder.

CAUTION To prevent memory card corruption, keep batteries charged and don't delete. Wait for lights to stop flashing then turn camera off before removing memory. For card readers, double click Safely Remove Hardware. Select then click Stop and OK.

There are so many cameras out there it is difficult to say which is best, but the second source link will be very helpful as it list most of the cameras out there with prices. The following information should help you know what to look for in a camera.

What gives a camera its picture quality?
The short answer is that it is mostly the skill of the photographer that produces high quality pictures. The lens and camera are very important, but the ability to set the scene, adjust the cameras settings, and hold the camera very still or use a tripod with auto or remote shutter actuation when required is what gets the great pictures.

Lots of great camera tips in this link.
http://www.danscamera.com/Learning/going_digital/#resolution ...

My camera has 5.2 mega pixel, but I use 3 most of the time because it gives great results, is faster, and takes less memory. Also, it only has a 3 x optical zoom and 7 x digital zoom. I never use the digital zoom because making pictures larger works better on the computer. This is an old camera, but everyone is impressed with the quality pictures it takes ... like magic.

Check with the Geeks in several stores and compare prices. Once you select a camera, read all about it in the owner's manual. You can view owners manuals at this link, but will need to Login. http://www.retrevo.com/s/digital+camera ...

which is better? canon EOS 1000D digital SLR camera or 500D?

foolscap90

my friend has the 1000D, but today another friend told me that the 500D is good. i need one with a fast shutter speed, because i mainly take action shots.

Answer
If it is action shots you are after then I would avoid any of the amateur 'Rebel' series of Canon bodies. For the price of the 500D you can buy a Canon 40D. I use one myself and after upgrading from a 350D (which I loved) I could never go back to the Rebel series.

The 40D has a very fast frame rate (6.5f/s), better AF system, faster AF system, much better build quality (magnesium alloy body and larger grip), larger and brighter pentaprism viewfinder compared to the tiny dark pentamirror viewfinders in the 1000D/500D bodies, higher ISO settings, faster shutter speeds, twice the battery life, etc etc...

I could go on, but I am sure you get the idea. Forget the entry level amateur bodies, if it is speed you are after then there is no doubt that you are better off with a semi-pro 40D. And if you are looking at a 500D (I would seriously not bother with this camera) then you can certainly afford a 40D.

Go into a store, handle them all and you will see exactly what I mean.

+++++++

Additional..

Frames Per Second

1000D - 3 f/s
500D - 3.4 f/s

40D - 6.5 f/s

Max Shutter Speed

1000D - 1/4000 s
500D - 1/4000 s

40D - 1/8000 s

Price (body) (UK Jessops)

1000D - £349
500D - £789

40D - £599

+++++++

So you have a choice.. a plastic bodied, slower amateur entry level body with a small viewfinder and less spec. Or a far better Semi pro model with far better specs and built for speed (this body was made for action shots)

I will leave the choice up to you, it seems obvious to me, hell I would rather have a 20D than a 500D, just for the ergonomics and large viewfinder alone.

which CANON 550D deal should i buy?

AliceMayPr

i've done my research and im a keen amateur photographer, i've seen two deals and would like your advice on which deal is worth while.

when i get my camera, i will be doing sports photography so a zoom lens is needed, is the deal from tescos worth that extra bit of money, rather than having to buy a separate lens with the Jessops deal?

Jessops
Canon EOS 550D with 18-55mm IS Lens
http://www.jessops.com/online.store/products/77142/show.html

Tescos
Canon EOS 550D Digital SLR Camera (inc 18-135 mm f/3.5-5.6 IS Lens Kit)
http://direct.tesco.com/q/R.208-0023.aspx

Answer
What kind of sports? are you talking at night under the lights? or full light of day?
The zoom on the 18-135 is not much zoom compared to most point and shoot cameras. It's definitely a lot more than the 18-55, but...
I shoot sports with a 70-200 f/2.8 and it's not all that much zoom from where I am at on the sidelines of a football field. It is too much for indoor basketball though.
If you are shooting in the full light of day that 18-135 will be ok. I'd look for the 55-250 instead if possible.
If you are shooting at night under the lights or indoors? None of them are going to be all that hot and you will need a flash or better lens.
That jessops price for the T3i converts to roughly $976 USD. that's kind of high. I know Adorama and B&H ship to the UK (assuming that is where you are) It's more than $100 USD less or roughly 61pounds. And that is the kit WITH a memory card, extra battery and camera bag. http://www.adorama.com/ICAT3IKA.html For the same price you are paying you can get the T3i with both the kit lens and the 55-250 lens at adorama: http://www.adorama.com/ICAT3IKL1.html

The tesco's link converts to roughly $1300 USD. That same kit runs $1050 or about 644pounds.
http://www.adorama.com/ICAT3IK2.html
Even with shipping on the kits it's a savings over what you are paying there! I'd go for the first kit from adorama if I were you.

What is the best ultra compact digital camera?

sergio_mol

I am looking for the best ultra compact digital camera. Different websites have their own review..

Answer
You weren't very specific on your requirements but I can steer you in the right direction, first head over to Cnet reviews and look at the Editors top cameras, http://reviews.cnet.com/Digital_cameras/4521-6530_7-5021301-1.html?tag=dir then take a look at Steves-Digicams, http://www.steves-digicams.com/ (note that the Canon A610 and A620 were top picks by both websites but they are not ultracompact, Steves-Digicams even has a "The Best" section, http://www.steves-digicams.com/best_cameras.html and then you can check out Dpreview, http://www.dpreview.com/ and lastly for user opinions head on over to Epinions, http://www.epinions.com/ using all of these sites you should be able to narrow the field pretty quickly.

I just came across the Casio Exilim EX-Z120 which features 7.2 Megapixels, 3X optical zoom, 2 inch LCD screen and uses AA batteries, the reviews seem to concur that this is a nice camera, all the places I listed above have reviews of it, check it out.

Answer
Before you decide, check out the information below. Canon seems to have the edge on Nikon when it comes to price/performance, but both are really great cameras brands.

There is no one particular place to get great buys, but you may see something below that really helps you find the best buy. Click on the first link in the information below for an example then search for your camera of choice at the upper left. Camera prices at this link change often.

This may not be an SLR, but Canon seems to make the best cameras for the money. Just saw this camera at Best Buy and think it is a great camera and a best buy. The lens and camera are very important, but the ability to set the scene, adjust the cameras settings, and hold the camera very still or use a tripod with auto or remote shutter actuation when required is what gets the great pictures.

Many of the new cameras come with only an LCD screen which is almost impossible to see in bright sun so you should try to find one that also has an optical view finder.

Check replacement battery prices when buying a new camera. Some proprietary batteries cost almost as much as the camera and may be only good for 200 shots between charges.

Higher mega pixels may not really be the best thing to look for. It is more expensive, takes longer to process, and may not be needed unless you are making a really large picture or blowing up a small part of a picture. Maximum print size for a 3 mega pixel setting is 8 x 10 inches.

While most of the cameras out there are really good, I would choose Canon over Nikon because it seems like more camera for the money. Some would say Canon withholds their best technology for high end cameras and Nikon implements their best at all levels. Digital SLR Camera: Canon or Nikon?

Alyssa

I want to know whether a Canon Digital SLR Camera or Nikon Digital SLR Camera is a better choice? Only answer if you have experience with either, please.

Probably looking at:

Canon - EOS Digital Rebel XS 10.1-Megapixel Digital SLR Camera

OR

Nikon D3000 10.2MP Digital SLR Camera

Answer
I know and I have experience, but that will not help you pick the right one for YOU.

Here is what you will have to do to know which camera system is best for you

Go into a camera store and see which of the cameras fits your hands the best.

See which cameras menu is the easiest for you to use to make changes in ISO, camera resolution, white balance, mode switching and make EV changes.

Finally, take a SD card with you and test each camera at their highest and lowest ISO as well as when using the white balance that matches the light in the store as well as with it in the "auto white balance" mode.

Once you get home and are able to see the results on your large computer monitor, you will know which camera is better for YOU, not us

Take your time before you decide. Once you choose one, you will be married to it for decades and the cost of changing to the other system will cost you nearly as much as a divorce

Which is Best Digital camera company? Canon, sony or Nikon?

Maxtor

I wanna purchase digital camera. but i m confused little bit, that which is best Canon, Sony or Nikon? plz pull out me from this confusion.

Answer
depends on what type of camera you are looking for..
If its a point and shoot I would go say 1. Canon 2. Sony 3. Nikon... if its DSLR then its a toss up between Canon and Nikon and Sony is third place... if its just who makes the best sensors, then its a tie between Canon and Sony and Nikon is a distant third (most high end Nikon DSLRs use Sony sensors)... Canon and Nikon are really good at the lens side of the business, Sony on the other hand is very good at making sensors but pretty weak at the link between the sensor and the lens.

we recently got a new computer and i want to put pictures from my canon powershot sd600 digital elph camera but i lost the disc to put the software on the computer..is there ne thing free that i can download to get the pictures on my new computer?

Answer
If you had just bought your computer then most likely it is equipped with an SD/MMC card reader thus you can transfer your pictures from your SD card to your hard disk using your file browser. if your computer is not equipped with an SD card reader then my best advise is just to buy one (around $20 for a multi-card reader or even less)

but you can download support soft-wares from this link...

Canon 30d?

sekp1987

I was originally going for a 40d body ($1200-body only! ouchies). Then I thought nikon d80. ($800-900 body only) THEN I thought XTI. It's a lot cheaper and good for beginners. But now I think a 30d might be a good idea. It's been on the market for a few years thus, former beginners are wanting to upgrade and sell.

Anyway, I heard that when you're not a super pro photographer, megapixels only mean so much. (30d has 8mp vs the usual 10-12+mp of entry level dslrs). I figure I'd try to get a less new camera so I can get a good lens or two or three. I've read the xti vs 30d vs 40d vs etc etc stuff so I'm pretty comfortable with the knowledge I have.

The going used price is $600ish via craigslist/good winning bid on ebay.

The going refurbished/open box/etc camera is about $700 or so.

So do you think it's a good idea to buy a 30d at about those prices? Or maybe you know of where I can get a better deal.

OR, if you have any suggestions at all or comments/wisdom, that's cool 2
I mean, just because it's old and not being made any more doesnt mean it's not good. Right? That's what I've been told anyway.

hey, that is the link to the canon eos 30d, they have " new " ones there, they aren't used or refurbished.

i would say that the canon eos 30d is a good camera, it has 8 megapixels which is good, it has a big screen which is convinient for displaying your work, it looks and feels more pro, that the canon xti. i would say that the 30d, has much more features, and would be better in the long term

when you buy something off of ebay, be careful some of that crap they sell is so cheap because smtn is wrong with it lol, but i wouldn't say that in all cases though.

hope i helped

Digital camera recommendations?

I've never had a "real" camera (just the disposable ones), and my fiance and I will be married this June. We wanted to buy a good digital camera to take on the honeymoon. We aren't photographers, but we'd like a good camera for some nice photos. Can you give advice regarding the best one to buy with the best price (or refund/rebate, etc.)? Thanks!

Answer
If youâre looking for a point & shoot, user friendly digital camera, I have to say, I like Canon. Nothing against other the other brands. I prefer Canon based on personal experience and their reputation. They have an awesome line of cameras that can fit any kind of budget and offers different features depending on type of photography usage.

My advice for those shopping for a point & shoot digital camera, you may want to consider the following: 1) 5 mp this is best for most users. 2) OPTICAL zoom with at least 4X. (Digital zoom shouldnât be high priority in a digital camera). 3) camera ought to have an viewfinder. Some models are doing away with the viewfinder. It is very helpful to have, when the subject is difficult to see in the LCD/display screen on a very bright day, or to conserve battery life. (Continuous screen use, suck up battery life). 4) Uses AA regular or rechargeable batteries. Some models have specialized lithium ion batteries, where you charge it while in the camera. With AA, you can always pick up a spare if you find yourself caught with low batteries and are not able to charge the camera/lithium ion battery quickly. 5)And a PLUS, can take video/movie mode. (Which most do!)

Canon has an awesome line that can fit the bill. Consider the PowerShot models, the A630 (8mp; 4x optical zoom) or the A640 (10 mp; 4x optical zoom). These models have helpful pre-set shooting modes that you choose for the particular picture situation you are about to shoot. Like: auto(matic), portrait, nighttime, landscape, indoor, snow, beach, kids & pets (subjects that wonât keep still), and more⦠You can also be creative with some of the models, where you can choose special FX settings as you are shooting a pictures. These 2 models also have the option to program/set your own manual settings. You should bear in mind, with physical size of the camera, (subcompact/slim/flat vs. compact), you compromise features that are available on the compact/slightly larger models.

I own the Canon PowerShot A620 (7.1 mp). My favorite feature of this model is the vari-angle (flip and twist) display/LCD screen. It protects the screen when not in use, and helpful for odd angle shots, especially if you want to take a picture of yourself or of yourself with others. (i.e you and your spouse!) Picture taking is instant! I have found lag time is not an issue, with this camera, compared to my first digital camera. The updated version of my A620 is the A630 and A640. Here is a review and its features (keep scrolling to see the vari-angle screen), up close and personal:
http://www.dcresource.com/reviews/canon/powershot_a630_a640-review/index.shtml

Here is where I go to shop on-line for the best price for digital cameras. (Which I found to have considerable better prices than going locally to your nearest digital camera dealer). Just type in your camera model in the âsearch keywordâ: http://lowpricedigital.com/category.asp?master_category_Id=1000 Buy soon or check daily, for prices changes daily amongst merchants. Also check if the camera is being sold ânewâ or ârefurbishedâ.

If youâd rather buy from the store, check the usual places, Best Buy, Circuit City, Wal-Mart, Target, and camera stores. Even consider Office Max, Office Depot, CostCo/Samâs Club---any store with a camera department.

Congrats and Good luck! (On the marriage and finding a digital camera!)

I like both of these cameras: http://www.target.com/Canon-PowerShot-10-0MP-Digital-Camera/dp/B001SER49M/sr=1-1/qid=1249604141/ref=sr_1_1/189-2481448-2751401?ie=UTF8&search-alias=tgt-index&frombrowse=0&index=target&field-browse=1038598&rh=k%3Acanon%20powershot%20sd1200&page=1 and: http://www.target.com/Fujifilm-10-0MP-Digital-Camera-Z30fd/dp/B001QEPR5M/sr=1-3/qid=1249604213/ref=sr_1_3/189-2481448-2751401?ie=UTF8&search-alias=tgt-index&frombrowse=0&index=target&rh=k%3Afujifilm%20z30&page=1

I'm basically wanting one of these for making videos for YouTube and for everyday use. I am wanting it to be able take up to 10 minute videos or more so I can put them on YouTube. Do you know how long the video time range is on either one of these cameras? Do you like the quality of the pictures and videos on these cameras? If you have either of these cameras please tell me why you like it and what you don't like about it. Thanks!!

Answer
I recommend the Canon PowerShot SD1200IS 10 MP Digital Camera with 3x Optical Image Stabilized Zoom. This camera can take a limit of one hour or 4GBs worth of video. These videos can be replayed on a computer and uploaded to YouTube. You can find this camera on Amazon at http://www.amazon.com/Canon-SD1200IS-Stabilized-Dark-Gray/dp/tech-data/B001SER492/ref=de_a_smtd.

The SD1200 has some big changes over its predecessor SD1100, and is the smallest, best designed Elph I've used thus far.

I've owned many models of Elph, this is my 6th or 7th, so my review is aimed especially at other serial Canon owners. I mostly compare the SD1200 to the SD1100.

* The big changes: Digic4 and a larger CCD sensor. The slight increase in CCD size (1/2.3" vs 1/2.5") should make for "cleaner" photos. And Digic4 promises faster/cleaner shots also.

* You get 10MP vs 8MP on the SD1100, and "medium" (M1) size is now 6MP. JPG quality is down to 2 setting: Fine or Normal.

* SD1200 is only slightly smaller than the SD1100, but feels notably smaller by virtue of curved edges and the LCD being flush with the body (no bump-out).

* The 1200 now feels as small as this design can shrink. Good news: my average-sized male hands can still comfortably hold it, barely not covering lens, flash, or resting on the LCD. But the round power-button is now almost too small to press if you had big fingers and no fingernails.

* 1200's new battery is a higher capacity 1000mAh (vs ~760mAh for SD1100). There's also a new charger (not compatible with the old batteries), a glossy white-colored model to blend into your wall.

* The buttons and menus are streamlined. There's now a button for review mode, pressing it a 2nd time takes you back to the previous state. Handy. The slider has dedicated AUTO and Manual settings, no longer need to use menus for that switch.

* Continuous mode and ISO now are in the Function Menu (on the SD1100, they had dedicated buttons).

* A SD card is no longer included. This makes sense to me, a 32MB card is barely useful, and with the downward pressure on electronics prices, I can't imagine Canon wanting to bundle a more expensive/bigger card. Some people will find this lack annoying.

* The A/V output is gone, and the USB connector now serves both purposes (both kinds of included cables now have a USB-end)

* A new version of Canon software is required for this model, Zoombrowser 6.3. Canon typically requires a new release for each new family/season of cameras. Unfortunately, the CameraWindow software has been intentionally dumbed-down in the 6.x software and no longer offers the options to delete your photos (have to go through the OS), nor to chose custom naming for the downloads. I say intentionally, since I asked Canon customer-support about it and they stated the changes were not bugs. The last Canon software to still have that functionality was 5.x, corresponding to the SD1000 and other cameras released that season.

* In casual indoor tests, the 1200 seemed more ready to go to ISO400 (often too "noisy" to be useful) when the SD1100 would have chosen ISO200.

* The SD1200 and SD1100 have identical specs on their optics. However, I noticed a more pronounced barrel-distortion on the 1200 at extreme wide-angle. (still only noticable in close-up shots of straight-edged items at wide-angle)

* In a casual speed test, the SD1200 took/stored photos notably faster the SD1100 (same scene, continuous-mode, same brand SD card), despite the 1200's image size being larger.

* Canon's paper manuals have been shrinking steadily. With this model, the only manual included is a quick-start guide, the rest is on CD-ROM.

* The packaging is even more efficient than before, about half the size of the SD1100's box.

* Sadly, there is no HD video mode, although all of the other Elphs released this spring had HD. SD1200 owners are stuck with 640x480 video.

Canon has several sub-series within the compact Elph line, varying mostly by asthetics and optics. The SD1200 is successor to the series that included the SD1100, SD1000, and SD600. These all favor a classic, slim design. If you're unfamiliar with Canon's Powershot cameras, there's lots of good material out there on camera sites such as dpreview.

In general, the small sensors and optics in all ultra-compact digital cameras lead to some optical quirks (such as barrelling), chromatic aberrations, over/under-exposure in bright sunlight/shade, and underpowered flashes. That's intrinsic to the size of camera, and vendors try to correct these effects in their on-board processing. My opinion is that Canon does a good job of correcting for these issues and the Elphs including the SD1200 take very good photos for their size.
