What is a good camera to use for everyday photography use?

canon digital camera vs sony on Lumix Zs20 Vs Canon Sx 260hs | digitalt kamera vurderinger
canon digital camera vs sony image

Carolina J

I want to start a life photo album. Basically to capture the adventures of my life. I'm looking to capture these photos to remember where I came from and my past. I want to travel and do crazy things so I want a camera that will capture these special moments. I don't want a regular digital camera. I was thinking more of a real camera that is used for professional photography but also not so expensive? Any ideas from photographers or students?

Answer
"I don't want a regular digital camera." I take this to mean you're not looking for an ultracompact $100 camera. your magic words "travel" + "every day life" tells me "rangefinder"

The beauty of a rangefinder is it's deep field of depth, that is, you can easily "point and shoot" a wide area with excellent quality and then later crop the image to isolate the desired subject.

Professionals use all sorts of cameras, it mainly depends on the subject matter. The right camera for the right job. For every day, a lightweight palm sized camera is easy to use and travel.

rangefinder vs dslr: http://www.kenrockwell.com/tech/rangefinder-vs-slr.htm

But you said "not so expensive" so... I recommend a mirrorless camera. Some examples...
Sony NEX series
Olympus PEN series
FujiFIlm X series
Canon Powershot G15
Panasonic Lumix series
Samsung NX series

Shane A

First of all, thanks for taking the time to respond. I'm looking at purchasing the Canon 7D camera for my company and would like your input about purchasing online. Pros and cons to an online purchase? Best place to buy from? Is it better to buy locally?

Answer
All the above recommendations are excellent. I've done business with both Amazon and B&H. I've also done business with Adorama (http://www.adorama.com/). It's a tie between all of them, but B&H and Adorama have phenomenal online learning resources.

Oh, and I bought my 7D from Camera Kings...don't go there. They try to upsell you and it's a nightmare when you say 'no' for items they want to add on to your purchase.

What is a good starting lens for videography using the Canon 7D?

bob crane

I just bought the Canon 7D mainly for videography. There seem to be millions of lens' out there. Since the 7D is already pretty expensive, my budget for a lens is about 200-300. I would like a lens with great zooming capability, very wide shots and of course, crystal clear image. Any suggestions?

Answer
Kinda put the cart before the horse there, didn't you? Why get a camera like the 7D, then stick a piece of junk lens on the front...

You aren't going to get what you want, with your budget. It's just too low. You may be able to find something like the 35mm f/2 for $300, a good "normal" lens on the 7D, or an 18-55 IS, but you aren't going to get the 15-85 (or even the 17-85) at that price.

Your best bet, with that budget, is to hit the pawn shops or the second-hand shelf at the local camera store. There isn't anything from Canon, and very little from the off brands, that will fill your wish list at anything close to your price.

Answer
Nikon D2x is pretty darn good. I think that they're only around $4500 now.

do you really want the best digital camera? Or do you want a little pocket consumer camera like everyone else. If so, I'd look at either the Canon SD700IS, the FujiF30 or the Panasonic FX01 (or newer FX07 if it's available).

Shop at Bhphotovideo.com, buydig.com or Newegg.com.

What is the best Profesional Digital camera today?

SER. A

Answer
Dr. Sam is right, even with professional cameras, one size does not fit all. It depends on if you're doing studio work or shooting sports, etc. And although pros are as gear crazy as the rest of us, they buy cameras as a business investment - they won't get the latest & greatest unless that's what they absolutely need to get the job done.
Still, if I had to name just one camera, it would be the Canon 1Ds Mk ll: metal body, 17 megapixels, 3 frames per second, $7000. Reserve another $7000 for lenses.
The 1Ds Mk ll is in stock here, in case you want to place an order (or just look at the specs): http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?O=Search&A=details&Q=&sku=354004&is=REG&addedTroughType=search
Runners up: the Nikon D2Xs (12 megapixels, 8 frames per second, $4250) and the new Canon 1D Mk lll (10 megapixels, 10 frames per second, $4500).

Which Digital SLR camera do you recommend?

canon digital camera germany on The State Of The Printed Hebrew Text Of The Old Testament Considered ...
canon digital camera germany image

Bridgett

I'm going on a trip to germany in a few months, and I'm planning on taking tons of pictures. I'm looking at the Nikon D40, but it's only 6.1MP :/

I am on somewhat of a budget, so please don't recommend a $5000 camera

thank you!

Answer
OK here is my short answer. for digital I have a Nikon D40 and I love it. The D40 has a full manual mode, Flexible progam, aperature priority, shutter priority modes. These are the same modes on all DSLR. It also has several other programed modes for things like portrait, night, children etc. As a photographer improves and learnds to use metering better these additional modes seldom get used so they are usually found on the more amature cameras and seen as not needed on the professional cameras. I feel I have a fair amount of experience as a photographer and it performs well for me but I can give it to my 12 y/o grandson if set on program and he can get good usable pictures as well. His photography is improving as he is already learning to use many of the functions himself ( yes I'm a proud granpa) .

I also would not get caught up in the megapixel hype and instead look at the entire sensor issue. Look at the article I linked below The D40 will do everything a beginner to intermediate photographer needs at a great price. It comes with an 18-55 lens. It will let you use any other money to buy more accessories. And by the time you outgrow it cameras will have advanced to the point that most of what is on the market now would be obsolete. I bought a D300 last year and only had a it a few months when the D700 came out. The canon would also serve you well but I am a Nikon person so I suggest them. I have friends that are very happy with thier canon's and take great photos. You will have others that like Pentax and Olympus and they are not bad cameras but if they were in the same ballpark you would see many more professional photographers use them

Now for the longer answer as you already have some experience I will be preaching to the choir on a good bit of this.

I would say the Nikon D40 Its an entry level DSLR. A digital SLR will give you a much larger sensor than any point and shoot camera. Larger sensor = more light to each pixel = clearer, crisper photo with better color saturation. DSLR will also let you grow and take more control as you learn more and you can change lenses when you have a need to. The sensor on the olympus is smaller than on Nikon or Canon

I am a nikon person and have had nikons since the 70's I personally think the nikon D40 give you more for the dollar than any DSLR today. There are some that do more but you pay a good bit more. Do not let the lower megapixels concern you if you do not do very very large prints you will never notice the lower DSLR. My brother recently needs a DSLR for a class and I recommended the D40 to him So I would also say get the D40 not the D40X. The Nikon D40 does not have limited functions compared with other entry DSLR. Yes it has fewer funtioncas than a 1500 dollar camera body would. It is not a a cut down version its equal or above most any entry level DSLR.

There is a great article in this months Digital Photopro Magazine that is titled "Megapixels how much is enough" EVERYONE looking at buying a new digital camera can profit by reading this article. Its here
http://www.digitalphotopro.com/studio/me...

I have a d300 and a d40 and when I am shooting for fun I grab the d40. Its weightless, a joy to use and gives good results

If you have a bit more money the D60 give you a number of things you want. It has newer firmware and image processors, designed for the 10 mp sensor. It has an "Active Dust Reduction System with Airflow Control ". Nikon not putting a system on the D40 to deal with dust is one of the biggest drawbacks I see to the D40 ( though I think its still a great camera for the money) If you change lenses dust will get in and the camera needs a system to deal with it. With the D60 you get a VR lens. That will help with low light situations ( they may offer that now with the D40 but originally it was not) . The D60 has Adaptive Dynamic Range. Nikon calls it "Active D-Lighting," it lets you save some highlights that my otherwise be lost. It has a newer better metering system than the D40. So you can get the D40 not the D40 x and spend the other money on lenses or a flash

Some people will want to make a big issue out of the fact that there are some nikon lenses that will not autofocus on these cameras. Right now there are "only" about 39 lenses that autofocus on these cameras. They cover the range of focal lengths. I doubt any photographer would be seriously limited with "only" this many lenses to choose from. If you want to manually focus you can more than double this and do so at a low cost. Manual focusing is easy and how we did things for decades before the advent of autofocus.

Cannon and Nikon chose to put the vibration reduction in the lens rather than the body. Somefolks put it in the camera and make of that. Yes that means you get stabilization only on lenses with that feature built in. In the body in theory it would work on every lens. But in fact image stbilization in the lens has proved to work faster and smoother with a lower impact on focus times than image stabilization in the body/ One problem with in body stabilization comes from the fact that the sensor would have to move different amounts for different focal lengths. A canon white paper says an in body system would have to move the sensor 1/4 inch to account for movement on a 300 mm lens.

Now a comment on liveview. Have you ever tried to hold several pounds of digital camera and lens steady at arms length while you look at an LCD screen. It not at all the same as holding a few ounces of point and shoot camera steady in the same position. One of the things we preach to new photogrpahers is to learn to hold the camera properly so the body mechanics give you a steady shot. You can't really do that looking at the LCD. So liveview is really something that will have very limited applications in a DSLR. . Usually only when its on a tripod. I have liveview on my D300 and have never used it.

Nikon also has great service. I was just reading the other day on eyefetch in the Nikon forum where someone posted that they had dropped thier lens and broken it. It was not a fault of the company they messed up. The sent it to Nikon and Nikon could not fix it. Nikon offered them a brand new identical lens at half the price. They did not have to

In closing all major camera manufactures make good cameras get out and compare the features and how they feel in your hand. Go to places like kenRockwell.com and DPreview.com to compare them. Nikon and Canon have the largest market share and I personally think there is a very good reason they do. Not bashing other brands but photographers tend to be very very demanding folks and they then tend to be loyal to what has worked for them well and consistently. That is not a pavlovian response anymore than it is a pavlovian response in my work at the fire department when I trust the brands of turnout gear and airpacks that have worked for me time and time again. Sometimes even going beyond the published specs. People in ANY demanding profession gain loyalty and trust from thier experiences. And if the product did not perform it would not be favored for long.

I am looking for a digital camera for travel.?

jennibean

I am going to be doing a lot of traveling this year and I want a good digital camera that has a good zoom and is great for taking pictures. Everything from landscapes in Ireland and Scotland, to architect in Germany, to beautiful pictures in the Caribbean. I am just starting out so I don't want anything crazy expensive. I was hoping to stay around $300-$350. I had been looking at the Canon PowerShot SX30. Any ideas or suggestions would be great.

Answer
the fog in ireland and scotland. the spring rain in germany, the sand and salt air of the caribbean, plus the banging around of all that travel.
four simple words - waterproof, shockproof, dust proof and freeze proof.
drop the camera once or get moisture in it and picture taking is done (i know from experience)
not trying to scare you, ok i am. just don't want to see you take a great trip and have nothing to show for it.
Canon D10 or the Panasonic Lumix TS3, they take nice pictures and you don't have to look out the window to see what the weather is like or wrap your camera in 6 layers of towels to keep the sand out.
the D10 has 640x320 video and 3x zoom, @ $250
the TS3 has 1080 HD video. 6x zoom and 3D picture capability but its pricey. @ $400
i have a TS2 and i love it. 720 HD video, 6x zoom. great pictures @ $260
this is just my personal opinion but if i was taking this trip i would spend the few extra bucks and get the Panasonic Lumix TS3. the rest of the waterproof cameras use digital image stabilization (higher iso) and creates noise (snowstorm). pretty sure Canon and Panasonic are the only 2 that have optical image stabilization to reduce noise.

What is a good, inexpensive on-camera flash?

well...

I need an on-camera flash for my Canon Digital Rebel and don't want to spend too much money. Suggestions?

Answer
A Vivitar 285HV at under $100 new is a great classic, sturdy choice.

Alternatively, you could look for a used Vivitar 283. If you go this route, however, make sure you get one of the made in China models(as opposed to made in Japan) to avoid frying your camera's flash circuit. I've been paying anywhere from $20-40 apiece for used Vivitar 283s.

I need help picking out a digital camera?

I'm am going on a vacation to Florida soon, and I need to purchase a digital camera so I can capture the memories. I need a new digital camera that is convenient to carry around, and it should not be to to expensive, but I dont want a cheap piece of crap. I would like the pirce range between 100-125 dollars. It has to be easy to use when hooked up to the computer and very durable. No particular color in mind. Thank you!
P.S. I would really like your review of the camera if you've had one.

Answer
There aren't any ground-breaking cameras for less than $200, let alone less than $125. Nikon sells some refurbished Coolpix P&Ss and Canon sells some refurbished Powershots for less than $125 - http://shop.nikonusa.com/store/nikonusa/en_US/list/Refurbished_Cameras/categoryID.43896500/?sortBy=low Out of the ones Nikon has for sale, I would recommend the S6000 or S570.

Im looking to buy a new digital camera. I want something that takes great pictures (but obviously not a 4000 dollar professional camera) .. for good every day -type pictures, what's a decent number of mega pixels? Im looking at a 14mp camera now.. would that be any good?

Answer
Pixel counts have nothing to do with image quality. It's marketing, pushed for so many years, that consumers see it as a measure of quality. Because camera makers have painted themselves into a corner, they must continue to push more and more pixels to sell more cameras.

The sad fact is that when it comes to cell phone cameras, and all compact cameras, regardless of price or brand, they are getting worse every year, not better. The image sensors aren't getting any bigger, so the pixels must get smaller. Smaller pixels gather less light, that means more noise. These sensors also have poor contrast, dynamic range, and color. That's why you see these photos people post on facebook with tons of noise/grain, and funky color.

This is the reason I own a dSLR and why I'm looking at a compact with a large image sensor like a Sony NEX 5N, or a micro four thirds camera. Compacts have been ruined. I would not buy any 14 megapixel compact camera. But that's me personally.

I understand you have a budget, and you are not a hard core pro. Buy the compact digital camera that has the fewest pixels that has the features you want. The ones with a "BSI" (back side illuminated) CMOS sensor perform better, you'll have to dig into the specs on the official sites to find out which model has them. They can be found on Sony, and Canon compacts among others.

And finally read the reviews, they are everywhere. The real pros will post sample images in different conditions to give you a better idea of actual image quality.

What is the best camera brand for an amatuer photographer?

'tis grace

I'm interested in taking artistic photographs and I know that I don't want to use a puny little camera to do it. What is the best brand in your opinion? And maybe an idea on the price range? I'd like for it to be a digital camera.

Answer
I recommend to anyone seriously contemplating the purchase of a new digital SLR camera to consider these two primary questions:
1. How much money do you have to spend???? $500.? $800.? $1,500.?
2. What level of photography do you aspire to "progress to" in the coming years ? (i.e. basic beginner, intermediate, or professional/business use).
For most beginners to intermediates I usually suggest one of these two manufacturers: Canon vs Nikon

1. Canon EOS Rebel model XSi. (Also known as the Canon 450D in Britain) The "kit" package comes with an 18-55mm zoom lens. The camera has pop-up flash, 12.2 Megapixels, and shutter speeds up to 1/4000th, 100-1,600 ISO sensitivity, 7 auto exposure Scene modes, PLUS Shutter Priority, Aperture Priority and Programmed Exposure Modes and Manual. It also has a 3 inch LCD screen, 3.5 frames continuous per second max., 9 point AF system, Live View Functioning and the ability to record photos in 3, 6 or 12 Megapixels PLUS numerous other great features found only on more expensive cameras. Wal-Mart is also selling them now for about $799. Sam's Club also has them for $729. I also think that Amazon dot com has them for around $650. Hereâs some more info about this FANTASTIC camera: http://www.imaging-resource.com/PRODS/XSI/XSIA.HTM#

I bought one of these 6 months ago and use it as my "back up" camera. I absolutely love it. I have gotten some fantastic photos with it and cannot praise it enough. I routinely enlarge my photos to make 8x10's and 11x14 size enlargements with no noticeable distortion or loss of detail in the pictures.
Another excellent choice from Canon includes the Rebel XS (also known as the EOS 1000D) which is a 10 megapixel camera which comes with the 18-55mm lens. It sells for around $550-600. US Dollars. http://www.imaging-resource.com/PRODS/XS/XSA.HTM

2. Nikon D-90: If you prefer to use Nikon equipment I strongly recommend the Nikon D-90 which has 12.3 Megapixels, 3 inch monitor with Live View, 200-3,200 ISO sensitivity, 11 point AF system with Face Priority, 4.5 frames per second in continuous mode, 5 advanced Scene modes for auto exposure plus Shutter Priority, Aperture Priority, Programmed Auto plus Manual. The D-90 sells for around $900-950. (Body ONLY. The 18-55mm lens cost an additional $150.-175.) Typically, Nikon equipment is slightly more expensive than Canon equipment, but (having owned both Nikon and Canon cameras), I have seldom noticed BETTER quality results using Nikon equipment. Hereâs some more info about this Nikon: http://www.imaging-resource.com/PRODS/D90/D90A.HTM
Another great choice is the 10.2 megapixel Nikon D-60 kit ($649) which also comes with the 18-55mm lens. All of these Nikon's can be found at Best Buy or Amazon dot com for a very low price. To learn more about this Nikon check this site out: http://www.imaging-resource.com/PRODS/ND60/ND60A.HTM

If you are convinced that Nikon is the way to go, but donât have as much money to spend, there are several other models to consider. You might prefer the 6.1 megapixel Nikon D-40 ($499) kit that comes with the 18-55mm lens. To learn more this Nikon camera check this site out: http://www.imaging-resource.com/PRODS/ND40/ND40A.HTM

These selections are probably the best choices for any beginner to intermediate skill level, offering the most lenses and other accessories, dealers and places to purchase.

I strongly recommend that ALL beginners buy a good book on digital photography AND take a class or two from a Vocational school or Community Education Center in your area.
You can learn more about the technical specifications of each of these two cameras at these websites:
http://www.usa.canon.com
http://www.nikonusa.com

Good Luck

What is the cheapest way to get a digital SLR camera?

canon digital camera zoom on Canon EOS 5D Mark III Review
canon digital camera zoom image

Ja

And don't say steal it!
I am a student photographer, and I used a standard canon digital camera, but I wan't something with more optical zoom that can be digital. I already have a canon film slr that my mom used to have, and frankly it is quite old and a hassle to carry around. I decided it might be best if I went ahead and invested in an slr, but i know those are extremely pricey! So, do you know where the best deals are for slr cameras, both on and offline?

Or, if not, do you know what the best slr STYLED digital cameras are that are out there?

Thank you so much!

Answer
Depending on how serious you are into photography and what type of photography you are doing. I would personally recommend a second hand or refurbished digital SLR for starters. I bought mine second hand and paid only 1/4th of the original price.I own Canon EOS 10D,you can see some of my photography on my website.

Then for the lens, the only problem with second hand is to be very very careful. You'll need to check and make sure that the glass has no marks and there is no dust inside, otherwise buy a new lens. Oh as you said you have a canon film slr, if it has autofocus lenses, you can use them with the digital slr so buy a body only and use existing lenses.

Also note that, because the digital slr doesn't have sensor same size as 35mm, so whichever lens you use, you have to multiply it by 1.6 so for example 17mm lens will be converted to approx 27mm on digital slr.

Hope this helps.

P.S. : To start a photography as a student, none of the compact digital or bridge cameras will help, u'll need digital slr (depending on how serious you are as i said). Otherwise yes there are some digital bridge cameras which provides you with almost all features of an SLR but too slow and quality is not same. A canon bridge camera for example is Canon PowerShot G series or Canon PowerShot S2IS.

What is a really good photography camera that doesn't cost a lot of money?

canon digital camera 60d price image
Q. I have a nikon coolpix digital camera, and another digital camera from a couple years back, but i'm getting more and more interested in taking better quality pictures. I don't have a lot of money to spend on one, so the cheaper, the better. but i still want a good resolution quality and everything else good too. thanks in advance for any help.

Answer
You can find many film cameras for very cheap. Resolution will depend on the film you select and choice of lenses.
And you can have whole setups (camera+lenses) from 50-100 US to no more than 500 US. They will beat any digital setup for the price.
Look into:

- Rangefinders (I still use, from time to time my Canon AE-1P but even the EOS 1V could be found on eBay for ~400 US. The 1V is one of the best 35mm cameras ever made!)
- Medium Format (maybe an old Mamiya?)
- Large Format (try a starter one, maybe an old Crown Graphic or a Wista...)

Options, there are many. If you meant digital, then there is nothing best/cheap. It is sort of linearly dependent. The better they are, the more they cost.

I prefer Canon. It is a personal preference, no need to start the endless battle of which one is better.

-Point and Shoot - G12
-Entry level - 60D or even a Rebel

Suggesting anything above that is pointless because you want cheap.

DPreview lets you compare cameras side by side. It is a very nice tool for people looking to buy a camera

What is a good dSLR camera for someone beginning photography?

Amber I

I have always just used basic P&S digital cameras, but would like to learn more about photography. I don't know very much as I am just starting to think about getting a good camera and have just started doing some research. I've looked at the Canon Rebel T1i and the Nikon D5000 and also a friend told me about the Canon EOS 40D. Any thoughts and suggestions would be much appreciated.

Answer
Hey,

Any of those 3 would be a great option. Many of us have used different DSLRs and when you're below 3500$, it's all the same. If you're using a camera only for low light (high ISO) then of course there will be differences, but technology today is so good there is barely any distracting noise at ISO 6400 while 3 years ago 1600 was..eh, acceptable.

T1i is a good choice but Canon could've done it better. The previous one, XSi, has 3 less megapixels and no video but same quality. T2i, the latest of these Rebels, is in my opinion, the best choice for beginners.

D5000 is good, but is fading out due to new cameras, especially because of D3100 and D7000. D3100 is almost the cheapest and is amazing.

40D is pretty old but still has great quality. Noise is worse than at T2i, 60D and 7D (due to technology) and the LCD Screen is bad compared to ones today. It doesn't have Microfocus adjustement and well, you can only get a used one.

Here's a post called 'Buying a DSLR, what's important, megapixels, features, brand, price, quality and which one to get - http://www.the-dslr-photographer.com/2009/03/which-dslr-to-buy.html

That site has many more tutorials, tips, reviews and guides. Good luck!

Suppose other cameras have 5 sec, 10 sec delay then we can shoot our picture by just keeping the camera ready.

Thanks for your answers!

Answer
Your camera has a 2 or 10 sec self-timer.

It has no interval timer ... those are found usually on the high-end DSLR cameras.

I have a question about different digital camera models?

Courtney C

I am looking to buy a Canon digital camera. I realize that there are many different models. I was wondering if the later models, or the ones with higher numbers (ex. SD1000 & SD850) are better than the others. Also, I am looking for very good image quality, reletivley small sized,at least 7 mega
pixels, and the option to enlarge pictures without them losing their quality. Which Canon model do you think I would be best off buying?

Answer
There is no definite rule for determining quality or features, especially from a company that makes so many models. The best thing to do is compare reviews of the models that have a feature set you are interested in. To see a fairly objective review of different camera models try some of the on line web sites.

I like Steve's Digicams because there are reviews of many cameras, it is pretty open minded (fair) and has a very consistent testing method. Each review is divided into sections and has one called Steve's Conclusion that summarizes the good & bad features of the camera.

The site is also very well organized so you can find cameras by mfg., no of MP or when it was reviewed and there are many links to additional information.

Hope this helps. Good luck!

What is the cheapest way to get a digital SLR camera?

canon digital camera website on Astroscope Night Vision Adapter for Canon SLR Cameras
canon digital camera website image

How do you format a memory card on a digital camera?

endlessdar

Anyone know? I have an A550 Canon Digital Camera and need to format the memory card.

Answer
For what it's worth, on my Nikon D200, I can go to the set up menu and format is my first submenu choice.

I would suggest opening the shooting menu on you A550 and see if there is a format choice.

If you no longer have your user manual, you could try going to the Canon website for assistance.

i do love photography . but i am a beginner . many cameras are in market , but stuck in to choose high end compact digital camera or entry level dslr , like canon sx50 knocking on the door with 50x optical zoom+12mp+RAW, and Nikon coolpix p510 42x optical zoom+16mp , many few panasonic and fujifilm high end compact , but at entry level dslr i can get nikon d3100 and i saw some canon dslr model in under $500 . So what will best for me to buy .. ? help me out pls.i need best recommend. Thanks .

Answer
dump all those mega zoom cameras of your list. They are all garbage. How do you think they get 40 or 50x zoom in a small package? They use the tiniest image sensor to cheat and get the extra range.

You can't have it all, so pick massive zoom or go with real image quality.

get a dSLR, look at used too, Nikon D3100, avoid the D3200, it's garbage in low light. Canon T1i, T2i, Sony A37.

Ignore pixel counts, image sensor size is KING.

Canon DSLR vs Canon Long Zoom?

Andrea

here's the basic gist. I am looking to get a good quality picture for a book I wrote that can be condensed to a 300dpi 4x5.

Right now I have a Sony Cybershot DSC-HX9V 16.2 Megapixel with 16x optical zoom.

I was looking at a Canon DSLR 12.2 MP CMOS Digital SLR with 18-55mm

and a Canon PowerShot SX50 12.1 MP with 50x Optical Zoom

I do know the zoom on the Powershot is going to be better than on the DSLR... but which is going to take the best quality photo in day and dark... that can be resized for the book at 300dpi 4x5?

Answer
In the first place you are NOT going to need a super fantastic size enlargement. But you do need quality. And you can assure that by first setting your camera to maximum resolution and leaving it their! The DSLR will not allow you to do close-ups like the film SLR's of yesteryear, with the lens that comes with the camera, so you will need a macro lens. This represents another expense as does changing any requirements on a DSLR means another lens to fill the bill. If you want excellent quality and have an all encompassing camera the Canon Powershot SX 50 IS is the one to get. The only fault I have to find this camera is that the length of the telephoto end of the zoom lens is so long that for me at least (age 70) I would need a tripod to avoid hand holding camera shake. Yes the camera does have lens stabilization, but If I can't hold the camera steady enough so the sides do not shake when in the telephoto position I don't want the camera. As a result I purchased an earlier, refurbished model of this camera with a shorter zoom lens. And I like the camera over all very much.
Now I just noticed you handed another wrinkle at me! You want quality in day and "dark". What does "dark" mean? Low light levels? If the answer to that is yes. Then you have no other choice than to purchase a DSLR regardless of how expensive they can get when you add in all the lenses. Because the Canon Powershot has a slow (light gathering power) of f/3.4 to f/6.5. Where as you can get a 50mm lens for the DSLR with lens speed of f/1.4 for about $400.00. As you can see, there are many things to consider before you plunk down your money.

Good Luck.

I also want a cannon camera (idk why) but it doesn't really matter if the one you suggest isn't a cannon.
Maybe an example photo too?

The Pentax K-x performs better than the 1000D or any other camera in its price range and as well or better than some more expensive models (test comparisons below). Nikon and Canon owners still live in denial though. Check prices from B&H in USD then see test comparisons below

Pentax K-x w/18-55 $521 HD video
Pentax K-x w/18-55 and 50-200 $625 HD video
Pentax K-x w/18-55mm and 55-300mm $715 HD video
Nikon D5000 w/18-55 $700 HD video
Rebel XSi (450D) w/18-55 $560 No video

Canon T2i w/18-55 $900 HD video

What digital camera should I ask for Christmas?

canon digital camera and price on Canon PowerShot SX40 HS Digital Camera Price and Review
canon digital camera and price image

Mr. Sam

I decided this Christmas that I want a new digital camera. Basically, price is not a problem, but I want high quality pictures and possibly movies. I'm looking for a camera that's relatively small & boxy. Not a big odd shaped camera. If I were to choose a color, it would be black. Now, I know that Canon Rebels take superb quality pictures, but I'm looking for a little digital camera that I can carry around, and isn't a hassle, like the rebel. So, a digital camera, relatively small, boxy, and black. Any suggestions? 10 points to best answer!

Answer
I would suggest Canon PowerShot SD780IS 12.1 MP Digital Camera with 3x Optical Image Stabilized Zoom and 2.5-inch LCD

I'm looking to buy a new Canon digital SLR camera. I want to spend about $1,500 on the camera alone, and $500 on lenses/fish eye lens. I need some suggestions on which camera to look into buying. Thank you! (Sample pictures of what the camera takes is super helpful).

Answer
Kirra, you might actually want to reverse your budget numbers. (i.e. $500 on the camera, $1500 on the lenses). I say this because fisheye lenses, especially those of decent quality are not cheap. Also, Canon's current pricing puts camera either above or below your stated budget. The 50D costs about $1100 and may get replaced later this year. The 7D costs about $1700 and is not necessarily the best choice for a first time DSLR buyer. Also, Canon only offers one fish-eye lens at this time (EF 15mm f/2.8 Fisheye, $680 USD) and it is specifically meant for full-frame cameras rather than the 1.6x crop-body cameras that fit your budget requirements.

It should also be noted that the EF 15mm f/2.8 fish-eye, if mounted on 1.6x crop-body (e.g. Rebel T2i/EOS 550D, 50D or 7D), is just a severely distorted ultra wide-angle lens (not a fish-eye). Rather than providing a true, 180-degree FOV as it does on a full-frame DSLR, a 1.6x crop-body only sees about 113-degrees which is similar to the FOV of a 14mm non-fish-eye lens on a full-frame DSLR. There are alternative brands such as Sigma, who make a true 10mm f/2.8 fish-eye for 1.6x crop-bodies but, even that "cheap" Sigma will cost about $650.

If you're willing to buy a used camera, the original Canon 5D sells for $1500 or less depending on the camera's condition. Before you turn away a used camera, keep in mind that the original 5D still beats even the mighty 7D for image quality specifically because of it's larger, full-frame sensor. Unless you are shooting sports, the original 5D may actually be the best camera you can buy given your budget. If you're shooting sports, I'd look at the 50D or splurge for the 7D. Otherwise, with a budget of $1500 for the body alone, there is nothing on the market (from any manufacturer) that will beat the original 5D for raw image quality.

DSLR - What company (Nikon, Canon, etc.) is the best quality for a photography camera?

ashleyoliv

I've been interested in photography for quite a while. But I haven't gotten around to buying a professional camera. I have a digital camera that I've used that is very poor quality. I usually use my phone camera. DSLRs (photography cameras) are extremely costly and expensive.

I need a company that is best quality.
I need a place to buy them for lower prices.

Thank youuu!(:

Answer
Pros use Nikon and Canon for a variety of reasons but they donât use Nikon or Canon consumer DSLRs. Pros can justify the expense of Nikon and Canon specialty lenses where the average consumer cant. Pros make money from the expensive equipment they buy but the average consumer doesnât. Just because pros use a particular brand doesnât mean its better for the average user. Nikon and Canon took hold because of aggressive marketing in which other manufacturers chose not to participate. It doesnât mean there are no other high quality DSLRs available.

If youre shopping for lower prices chances are youre not purchasing a pro camera. A pro camera will run around $2000 minimum.

If you want very high quality images without the added cost of the Nikon and Canon names go for the Pentax K-x. In tests it performs better than the Nikon D3000 and about equal to the D5000. See the comparison

Go to this link and compare the K-x to Canon and Nikon. It outperforms any of their cameras in its price range and better than or equal to some of their more expensive models. Use âCompare Camerasâ
http://www.dxomark.com/

The K-x has Image Stabilization and Auto Focus in the body. These are in the lenses with Nikon. AF is in lenses with Canon. Why pay for IS and AF over and over with each lens you buy? Having IS and AF in the body will save money on lenses for as long as you have the camera. The K-x also has HD video for the price of cameras with no video at all.

Here are price comparisons in your range from B&H Photo except as noted

Pentax K-x w/18-55 $521 HD video
Pentax K-x w/18-55 and 50-200 $625 HD video
Pentax K-x w/18-55mm and 55-300mm $715 HD video
