Digital camera software problem?

Robyn

i just got a new digital camera from canon, and i recently tried to insert the cd and download the software onto my laptop. when i inserted the disk, nothing happened, so i went to "computer". i found the disk, but when i clicked on it, it gave me a message that said "application not found." is this my fault of canon's fault? should i send it back?

Answer
Most of the software that comes on the CDs packaged with cameras is completely unnecessary. Try just plugging your camera into your computer and see what happens. On most recent Windows and Mac computers, a program will open and ask what you want to do with your pictures.

If nothing happens, you may need to download a driver from Canon

how do you download the software for a canon digital xti?

Answer
Here's what most of us professional and/or serious photographers do. We don't use the usb cable-to-camera for downloading. Instead, we all use a fairly inexpensive media card readers (find one for your CF card). The media card reader will be seen my your mac (works on my Dell as well as on my Macbook) as another drive (E, F, etc). You can then just easily copy or move your pictures to any folder you created on your computer's HD. No need to use the camera maker's software. Most of us never even open the disk that came with our camera.

Benefits? First of all, it won't drain your camera's battery. It's much faster. And, if you get a card reader that takes multiple kinds of cards, you can use it for your XTi, your point & shoot, or any camera you may use in the future.

BTW, here's a link to the Canon site where you can choose your computer's OS and then download the software you need.
