Personally encountered this problem an d in my case it was a defective 50mm/f1.8. Aperture blades were stuck. I believe this is a pretty generic error code though. Try changing lenses if possible and see if the problem persists.

Or any other Finepix without the telescoping lens. Ask anyone with a Canon about "error 18", that is the camera killer, and has to do with the fragile lens jamming. The Finepix compact models dont have the telescoping lens that causes trouble and the MP rating is quite high. If you are anything more than a "point and shoot" photographer, look into the Fuji S1000. It is a real camera, real 10X optical lens and has real controls, ie aperature setting, shutter speed, ISO rating and feels like a camera, not a deck of cards. You will find yourself composing shots and getting more creative than the purse cameras, it also has a better flash. And its under 250 at Target. The Kodak "real" cameras (Z712) have very good lens and I believe they come with a dock which is very nice, it downloads and recharges as soon as you set it in the cradle. I came to really like my Fuji F700 dock. So simple.

Good digital camera under $200(CAD)?

I had a Kodak EasyShare, and the actual camera was crappy (it got humidity damage), but it took really good photos.

I'm looking for a camera, that I can get at Staples, Future Shop, Best Buy or a place like that (I don't want to order online). That meets the following criteria:

*Is NOT Kodak
*Can take decent photos with crappy lighting (ie. At concerts and clubs)
*Can take movement photos without being blurry
*Shows the battery meter (ie. How much battery life is left, not just a pop up when you're low)
*Is SDHC compatible **This is the most important because I have a 32GB card that I paid $100 and I want to be able to use it**
*Is at least 10MP

I tried a Fuji FinePix J250W and it's horrible. It doesn't like odd lighting, it doesn't like movement, and it keeps giving me memory card errors.

Any recommendations?

I'd say go with a Canon PowerShot. They take SD cards and you can get some awesome pictures out of them. Future Shop had one on sale for 179.99 this week:

Just transferred my pics from memory card to computer using card reader and then reinstalled card with deleted pics back into camera. I get this error message ERR 99. Don't know how to get rid of it. I tried inserting new memory card. Same thing happens.

One possibility that I've run into is you may need to clean your lens contacts. Remove the lens and with a very soft cloth gently wipe the contacts on both lens and camera. Remount the lens and try again.

If that doesn't work get in touch with Canon.

the shutter of my digital camera seems to be stucked. i can make my camera work on low light conditions. sometimes, simply turning it off and on will do the trick but the problem returns after one or two shots. i've read some tips on discussion threads on Canon EOS 300D's Error 99, to no avail. please help. thanks.

I had the same problem with my 300D + 50mm/f1.8. Basically I brought it to the service center and was told the 50mm had stuck aperture blades (from one lousy drop of 3 inches). Changed the lens and didn't encounter the problem anymore.

What will they do? Can they just say it has water damage? I was getting error 99 on my Canon Digital Rebel XS.
So I called and they said ship it out, but I'm kind of scared... anyone ever have experienced something like this before?

It will be fine as long as you have a warranty. They may replace the camera or fix it, and check it thoroughly. There is nothing to worry about, and your camera will be returned.

I've heard it is a shutter problem, but my situation seems a little different than the others I've seen. The camera works fine when the flash is off, but when its on an error 99 message appears and it wont take a picture at all. Does anyone know what the problem could be, or what it would cost to fix it?

It seems error 99 is somewhat generic and difficult to pinpoint. Heres some of what I found with a âcanon rebel xt error 99â Google search

The guy at tech support listened and then told me that the lens contacts were dirty and to get a pencil with an eraser on the end, just a regular old pencil with a red rubber eraser. Detach the lens from the camera, hold it so that the lensâ gold contacts are pointing down and lightly erase their exposed surface, cleaning them of any hand oil that might have gotten on them.
Do the same thing with the gold contacts inside the camera body. This is a bit harder but itâs doable: just hold camera so lens opening points down so no gunk falls in. Erase lightly. I used a lens cloth and dabbed at the contacts rather than blow them so as not to blow the erasings inside the camera.
I did this to each of my three lenses just to be sure. Lo and behold, it worked (so far anyway). Iâve shot numerous pictures with each lens and have not gotten a single error 99 message. One would think sites like dpreview.comwould have this but I never found it there. Iâm psyched, I feel like I have a whole new camera now.

Conclusion of tests
After doing these simple tests, I have come to the conclusion that ever since the ERR 99 message popped up, the flash would not synch properly, the most shots I could after removing then replacing the battery was 5, and that the lens or the CF card don't seem to be causing the problem. I'm guessing it has something to do with the firmware or the electronics. Or I'm one of the few lucky ones to own a totally defective Rebel XT.

Try turning the camera off, removing the storage card and reinserting it (or insert a different card altogehter.) Error 99 is a general communications error which is - in my experience - sometimes triggered by the storage medium, not the body/lens connection.

Maybe reload the firmware. I`m not a computer expert, but sounds corrupt somewhere in the memory

Doesn't have the kit lens, but a Sigma 28-300 AF lens. Worked flawlessly till about a month ago, when it started giving Error 99. I googled and learned about some body/lens compatibility issues. One of the suggested solutions was to clean lens contacts, which I did. But now it's overexposing severely in the sun, in several modes. I don't have reliable Canon service where I live, so am rather desperate to find out what could be wrong, and what I could do. Thank you for your sharing.

Check your settings. Are you on Manual, Program, Shutter Priority, Aperture Priority... if you set it on Program (if it's not on it already) you will probably find this will fix it. If not.... what white balance are you set on? What ISO? In direct sunlight you probably want to be around ISO 200 or 400... if you're around 1000 or higher this could cause your camera to over expose your images.

I think I've seen that same error at some point and I want to say it was caused by somehow "unlocking" the lens from the mount so the contacts weren't securely touching.

3rd party lenses like Sigma, Tamron, etc. have to reverse engineer their lenses to try to get them to work with Canon and Nikon lenses and they don't always work the way they are supposed to, but usually do.

How do I dry out a camera lens that got wet?

I'm a real beginner and the Canon digital rebel is my first DSLR. I'd been having fun with it until a recent holiday where I got caught in the rain with my camera and it got wet. I dried it out thoroughly and downloaded the photo's I'd taken. Since then it has been coming up with an Error 99 message. First it displays the setting for the last photo I took, then the error message. Nothing happens when I press the shutter. I have tried the recommended tricks of cleaning the battery connectors as well as those for the lens, but to no avail. Can anyone help?

There's not much you can do. If you've cleaned the battery and lens contacts properly, that's about all you can do.

What happens if you don't have a lens attached? If you still get a 99 error it can't be the lens contacts and it's very unlikely to be battery contacts.

At that point, all you can do is send it in for repair. Water damage isn't covered by the warranty I'm afraid.

This might be totally obvious...but take out the battery, keep the battery door open, remove memory card, keep that door open, take off the lens, etc, etc, etc, and don't touch it for a week.

It might be useless, but maybe it just needs a LONG time to dry out.

yes, you will get dust in, but it's worth a soht.

I'm assuming that you were not in the regions of the world where saltwater falls from the sky... :-)

I remember once when a friend and I were at a beach in Cuba, hanging out in knee high water. She tripped and fell and her Nikon was submerged for a short time. Never made it back to normal, I'm afraid :-(
